Cockenzie - Port Seton East Lothian Coast Cockenzie & Port Seton East Lothian Coast Cockenzie East Lothian has a long history with the burgh status created in 1591 by James VI of Scotland. There is a harbour and large mansion house that have been part of Cockenzie East Lothian for over 300 years. Cockenzie East Lothian is a small town on the east coast of Scotland just outside of Musselburgh close to the site of the historic Battle of Prestonpans where the Jacobite army led by Bonnie Prince Charlie defeated the English army led by Sir John Cope. Cockenzie and Port Seton have merged into one town. The memorial garden and war memorial are at the centre of the village of Cockenzie and down the coast is Port Seton Harbour, Seton Castle and Collegiate Church . Cockenzie House Cockenzie East Lothian Cockenzie House was originally built for David Seton by Robert Seton, 8th Lord Seton and 1st Earl of Winton, circa 1600, as an estate-residence from which to oversee the affairs of the harbour and of the local Seton estate. It then passed to the family Caddell (Cadell) of Cockenzie. The Cadell family were land owners of Cockenzie for over 200 years purchasing the land in 1779. The original lands of Cockenzie being owned by George Seton, 5th Earl of Winton who had the lands taken from him by the crown as he had been a supporter of the Jacobite army and the old pretender ( James Francis Edward Stuart). Cockenzie House Gardens Salt Pan, Shell Grotto and Statue The lands were then purchased by the York Buildings Company in 1719. The York buildings company interests were in the production and distribution of coal and salt and became the largest company in Scotland. Cockenzie House has many interesting objects in the gardens of which one is a Salt Pan which is how salt was originally made from the sea. Cockenzie Power Station The Power Station at Cockenzie East Lothian, opened in 1967 and used over 500.000 tons of coal which was crushed by the grinding ring and steel balls to generate electricity to power all the houses in Edinburgh for over 10 years. Cockenzie Power Station Mural Cockenzie East Lothian The Mural of the Power Station is one of the prestoungrange murals which can be seen in and around Prestonpans Cockenzie Harbour Cockenzie East Lothian The Cockenzie Harbour built circa 1630 by the Seton family to transport salt and coal to all parts of Europe. A further harbour at Port Seton was built around the same time and later rebuilt by the Stevenson brothers (father and uncle of Robert Louis Stevenson) in 1835 for the Cadell (Caddell) family who acquired the area in 1774. Cockenzie Port Seton in Bloom This is one of the areas the local people maintain around Cockenzie and Port Seton. Volunteers have regenerated disused and derelict areas into beautiful flower beds and shrub areas with centre piece as below. The group started in 1998 Creating, the Millenium Garden, the Memorial Garden and the Secret Garden at Cockenzie House. John Muir Way East Lothian The John Muir Way coastal route passes through many small villages and towns of East Lothian. This section of the John Muir Way is great for walking and cycling, Prestonpans, Cockenzie, Port Seton, Longniddry and Aberlady. Coast of East Lothian Port Seton Harbour (The Seton Family Port) Port Seton East Lothian The harbour port of Seton was built in 1635 and closed circa 1810. The estate was neglected for over 100 years from 1715 till 1789. The new estate owner the Earl of Wemyss contracted David and Thomas Stevenson to design and build the new harbour. The harbour was complete in 1880 and is still in use. The original harbour was used to ship coal and other goods all over Europe. The Loth Stone is said to mark the grave of King Loth, which has not been found and there is no evidence of a pictish King living in the area as the Picts (Picti), were British people who lived north of of the Firth of Forth, who were never defeated by the Roman armies. The meaning of Pict is “Painted Ones”. Said to be fierce warriors covered in blue paint. King Loth In 528 the ruler of the Gododdin, King Loth had made is strong hold Traprain Law where he ruled his kingdom. Th story goes that King Loths daughter Princess Theneva (Teneu) had an illicit affair and became pregnant. The King became enraged and threw her from the Law, however she survived. The Gododdin, could only believe that she had to be a witch and banished her from the kingdom. She was put on a boat never to be seen again. On arriving in what is Fife she was taken in by monks and had her baby. Her son educated by the monks joined the order and was later to become a Saint. Standing Stane Traprain East Lothian Not far from the Traprain Law is Standingstone Farm, where yet another Standing Stone can be seen. This Stone stands in the orchard of the farmhouse. almost 3 m in height (9 foot). Standing stones maybe ancient markers for homesteads or farms and from the ones I have come across all seem to be around 9 feet in height (3m). Edinburgh New Town North Bridge Edinburgh connection of the Old Town Edinburgh to the New Town, Princes Street, George Street,Queen Street and the history and famous residents. North Bridge Edinburgh New Town North Bridge Edinburgh Connecting Old with New The Original North Bridge was founded in 1763, opening in 1772 to link the Edinburgh Old Town with the New Town. Due to the high volume of people and transport that used the bridge it was widened in 1876, it was then demolished in 1896 to make way for the present North Bridge which was opened in 1897. The main rail lines run underneath the bridge. At the foot of the bridge is the Balmoral Hotel and Princes Street and at the top are the Scotsman and Carlton Hotels and the famous Royal Mile. The statue on the East side of the bridge is dedicated to the King’s Own Scottish Borderers who fought in battles around the world. Behind the statue can be seen the Calton Hill, with the Martyrs Obelisk, Governor’s House, Nelson Monument and High School all visible. Must be near 1pm as the ball is going up the mast on the Nelson Monument. General Post Office Building The General Post Office building stands on an area Shakespeare Square at the east side of the North Bridge. This image is before the North Bridge was built. General Post Office in Edinburgh was built on the site of the Theatre Royal which opened in 1769 and closed in 1859. The foundation stone was laid by Prince Albert in October 1861, and the building opened in May 1866. It closed as the Post Office in 1995. The North British Station Hotel (Balmoral Hotel) The North British Station Hotel (The Balmoral) opened for Business in 1902 and is positioned next to the Waverley Station between Waverley Bridge and the North Bridge, which gives direct access to Edinburgh’s old town, The Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle and The Palace of Holyrood House (Holyrood Palace). Directly behind the hotel is Calton Hill. The Hotel is at the east end of Princes Street, one of the most famous and picturesque streets in the world. The clock has historically been set 5 minutes fast giving rail travellers the illusion that they are late for their train. The site it stands on is where the first ever hotel in Edinburgh stood. James Young Simpson Duncan Flockhart & Co Plaque operated a pharmacy from a position at the foot of the North Bridge on part of the site now occupied by the Balmoral Hotel. Duncan Flockhart was to make the chloroform that James Young Simpson would use on his successful experiments on pain relief in 1847 which changed the way medical operations would be carried out. The plaque shows where the pharmacy was sited in 1847. FOUNDATION STONE NORTH BRIDGE BRONZE PLAQUE The King’s Own Scottish Borderers Memorial Monument On the 19th March 1689 David Leslie Earl of Leven gathered a regiment of soldiers within two hours to defend the City of Edinburgh. For Leven’s regiment’s gallantry in defending Edinburgh and later at the Battle of Killiecrankie with a resounding victory for the Jacobite’s lead by James VII of Scotland and II of England, the magistrates of Edinburgh gave the unique right of recruiting by the beat of the drum, marching through the Edinburgh streets with drums beating and flags flying and bayonets fixed. The regiment was later named The King’s Own Scottish Borderers. It is now part of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. Bronze Plaques The Old North Bridge Plaque is an illustration of the original North Bridge of the First North Bridge The North Bridge Plaque is of the details of when the foundation stone and the present bridge opened. Scotsman Steps The Scotsman Steps is a covered ornate pedestrian staircase for quick access to Waverley Station from the North Bridge.
