Leith Edinburgh History, Attractions and Activities Leith Area Edinburgh Leith area Edinburgh or originally inverlet ‘the mouth of the Water of Leith’ which was two villages one on each side of the river estuary North and South Leith which were first joined by a bridge in 1493 and the oldest building that remains is St Ninian’s at the shore. Leith was chartered to Edinburgh by Robert the Bruce in 1329 giving the powers of Edinburgh control of Leith. In 1920 Leith became a part of Edinburgh. The Leith Area Timeline The first recorded mention of Leith was in 1143, when the area near the river estuary was granted to the Holyrood monks by David I. Known by the name Inverlet. Edward II mentions Leith in 1313 before the Battle of Bannockburn. The incorporation of institution of the Mariners’ happened in Leith 1380. Leith became a ship building area circa 1520. The French invaded Leith in 1548 for 12 years they took control. Finally in 1560 after many battles and a siege the french left Leith in the wake of destroying what they could. Mary Queen of Scots returned to Scotland from France in 1560 at the shore in Leith. Cromwell took control of Leith in 1650 and had a base at the Citadel. Leith Area 17th Century On The Bank of Leith opened in 1806 with its own Leith currency. King George VI set foot on Scottish soil at the Shore invited by Sir Walter Scott in 1822. The “Leith Act” was passed by Parliament in 1827. Leith Nautical College was opened in 1855 The building resembling a ship. The Leith Improvement Act was passed in 1880. A free home for retired Sailors’ was built in 1883 at the Shore. Now the building is a Hotel. The first trains arrived in Leith when Leith Central station opened at the junction of Leith Walk and Duke Street in 1903. Finally Leith became a part of Edinburgh in 1920. Queen Victoria Kirkgate Leith This Statue was to commemorate the reign of Queen Victoria and her visit to Leith in 1842. She died in 1901. It is also a war memorial to the memory of the Scots Guards from the area that died in the Boar War. It was unveiled by Lord Rosebery who was the Liberal Prime Minister 1894-5 and the ceremony was watched by a crowd of over 20,000 people. Leith became a part of Edinburgh in 1920. The meaning of Leith is broad river. Trinity House Museum Leith Edinburgh The original mariner’s house built in 1555 on this site was an Almshouse for the retired and poor that wished to stay within the seafaring community. The present building replacing the original Almshouse was built in 1816. Explore Trinity house and see the treasures the mariners returned home with from their travels. There are old marine maps, navigation equipment and ships models. There are also paintings and manuscripts that tell the stories of the sailors of the 14th century to this day. Trinity House Museum South Leith Parish Church Leith Edinburgh The first church built was St Mary’s in 1483, over the centuries famous people have used the church such as Mary of Guise and Oliver Cromwell. The church has been used as a prison and the General Assembly was held here. Many parts of the church have been replaced since first built, with the ceiling being replace during the renovations of 1847, a Hammer beam ceiling was installed which is still present and will take your breath away. St Mary’s Star of the Sea Church Leith Edinburgh St Mary Star of the Sea was built mainly due to the emigration of Irish families due to the potato famine between 1845 and 1849. Many Irish Catholics families came to Leith and there was a lack of Catholic churches to satisfy the large congregations. The Church of St Mary Star of the Sea was Completed in 1854 and is within the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh. Leith Town Hall Leith Edinburgh The Town Hall and Sheriff Court on the corner of Constitution Street and Queens Charlotte Street was built in 1828. A new Town Hall was open in 1929 after leith joined Edinburgh but was nearly destroyed by bombings in 1941 during the 2nd World War. The Town Hall was Converted to police and burgh offices in 1868, becoming the Leith Police headquarters. Merging with Edinburgh Police in 1920 when Leith became part of Edinburgh. Leith Assembly Rooms Exchange Building Leith Edinburgh The exchange buildings were built by subscription as a meeting place for merchants, which included the Assembly Rooms that opened in 1783 and an extension in 1810 which was the Leith Exchange. This was where everything from commerce to entertainment was centred. A Leith Hero Eric “Winkle” Brown Leith Edinburgh Eric Melrose Brown 21 January 1919 – 21 February 2016. Eric was born in Leith Area a port outside of Edinburgh. Captain Eric Melrose Brown known as Winkle due to his slight stature was an amazing man and record holder. His father was a pilot and as a young boy Eric was involved in aviation. Captain Eric Brown’s first flight was on his fathers’ knee. He became Britain’s most decorated test pilot in the Royal Air Force. Flying 487 different types of aircraft. He was also the first person to land a plane on an aircraft carrier. He saw Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics, witnessed the horrors of Belsen and awarded and the CBE, MBE and OBE. He was to continue flying aircraft until he was 70 years old. He also was a published author of books and lived till he was 97 years of age. Robert Burns Statue Leith Edinburgh Robert Burns died at the age of 37. He was known as the Ploughman poet. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland. Burns was born two miles south of Ayr, in Alloway South Ayrshire, Scotland. Robert Burns was the eldest of seven children. He travelled the world and had many love interests and had 9 children. Robert Burns is buried in St. Michael’s Churchyard, Dumfries, Scotland. Robert Burns’ brother Gilbert Burns (1760 – 1827) and mother, Agnes Broun 17 March 1732 – 14 January 1820 (and later his sister Annabella) moved to Bolton East Lothian from Ayrshire. Gilbert oversaw the building of the new Bolton parish church which was completed in 1809. The cottage at Grant’s Brae is no longer there, the house was demolished and a roadside monument stands in its place. No more than one hundred yards northeast lies the drinking well used by the Burns family. It was lovingly restored in 1932 and dedicated to Agnes Broun. The dedication states: “Drink of the pure crystals and not only be ye succoured but also refreshed in the mind. To the mortal and immortal memory and in noble tribute to her, who not only gave a son to Scotland but to the whole world and whose own doctrines he preached to humanity that we might learn? Burns 1759 – 1796 “The priest-like father reads the sacred page – from scenes like these old Scotia’s grandeur springs, that makes her loved at home, revered abroad:” “I there wi something did forgather, that pat me in an eerie swither:” Presented by Robert Meikle “When Vulcan gies his bellows breath an plowmen gather wi’ their graith” “In order, on the clean hearth-stane the luggies three are ranged:” Hallow’een Presented by William Tulloch Leith Bank Building Leith Edinburgh Leith Bank was established in 1792 and printed Leith bank notes and was trading from its premises in Bernard Street from 1806. It was common place for towns in Scotland to print their own money. The funding would come from local wealth merchants. Leith Bank did not stay open long as it closed due to lack of funds in 1842. Reverend John Home Leith Edinburgh Reverend John Home was a poet and playwright and was born in Maritime Street Leith in 1722. He is remember for his play Douglas which was first performed in the Playhouse Theatre Canongate in 1756 Corn Exchange Leith Edinburgh The Corn Exchange building was built in 1861 marketing hall to deal with the sale and purchase of agricultural goods. The building has a frieze which runs down the Constitution Street side of the building which depicts cherubs at work in the agricultural services. The frieze was sculpted by John Rhind. West Bowling Green Street Bridge Leith Edinburgh William Beatson was the engineer that built the bridge in west Bowling Green Street in 1886. It is a Single span bridge with a single cobbled road which spans the Water of Leith. The road is now pedestrian only and can be accessed from The Quilts or west Bowling Green Street. Leith Fort Leith Edinburgh Leith fort was designed by James Craig of Edinburgh and the Fort was constructed in 1780. The Royal Artillery occupied the fort in 1793. The Fort was increased in size during the Napoleonic War to accommodate French prisoners. Leith Fort saw no action and was man with a battalion until 1957. A that remains of the fort is part of the walls and the two gate houses. There are also a number of canon still on site. Norwegian Seaman’s Church Leith Norwegian Seaman’s Church Leith was built in 1868 by Johan Storjohn a divinity graduate from Bergen Norway who arrived in Edinburgh in 1863 and could not find a church for Scandinavian people. At the time there were many Scandinavian sailors as the whaling fleet of Christian Salvesen was registered in Leith. Norwegian King Olav V visited the church in 1962. Miracle at Sea Norwegian Church Leith “Vim Stone” In the Garden of the Church is a stone named the “Vim Stone”. The stone was named after a Norwegian ship which ran aground in 1937 and was letting in water and would have sunk with loss of life. The rocks the ship hit, part broke off and plugged the hole and saved the ship, which finished its journey to Leith. . The sailors on the ship removed the rock fragment and took it to the church, where it can be seen in the garden to this day. The inscription reads DENNE STEN FRA NORGES BUNN BRAGTE ‘VIM’ SOM GIKK PA GRUNN David Kilpatrick Public School Leith Memorial Stone David Kilpatrick School was built between 1913 and 1915 and was first used as a barracks before becoming a school in 1919, which it was its original purpose. The inscription on the memorial stone reads: “David Kilpatrick” Public School, Leith. The Memorial Stone of this public school was laid on 27th September 1913 by the Right Honourable R.C. Munro Ferguson P.C. L.L.D. M.P. For Leith District of Burghs members of the school board. Rev. David Kilpatrick (Chairman) Mrs. Elizabeth Logan Calder, Mr. James Murphy, Mr. J. Duncan Cran, Rev. M. O’Reilly, Mrs. Janet Cruickshank, Rev. James M. Stott M.A., Mr. James Dempster, Mr. Thomas Scott, Mr. John Garden, Mr. Wm. L. Sharp, Miss Clarice M. McNab, Mr George W. Tait S.S.C. Mr Frank J. The building was ready for occupancy on 1st September, 1915; but owing to the premises being required for military purposes in connection with the great European war, they were not fully utilised for educational work until 2nd September 1919. Leith Town Hall Complex Leith Town Hall Complex consists of Thomas Morton Hall a venue that holds upto 200 people. The Theatre which concerts and weddings are held plus the public Library building. Thomas Morton Hall Leith Thomas Morton was born in Leith in October 1781 and became a shipbuilder. Opening his own company. In 1818 Thomas Morton was the inventor of the slipway, a way to haul ships in and out of the water. Thomas Morton lived at 1 Pilrig Place Leith. He died in 1832 and is buried in South Leith church burial grounds. The hall that is part of the Town Hall Complex was named in his memory. Leith Theatre The Leith Theatre complex was a gift fro Edinburgh Council when Leith became a part of Edinburgh in 1920. After many years of building the theatre opened in 1932. With the complex being bombed in 1941 the theatre did not open again until 1961 when renovations and rebuild was complete. The theatre building now operates by a trust and is a creative hub for all. Leith Public Library The Library was built in 1929 and bombed in 1941 then rebuilt and opened in 1955. Mount Falcon Battery Site Leith Edinburgh This is said to be where Officer Falcon had an artillery battery in the siege of Leith in 1560 prior to the French disregarding Leith du to Mary Queen of Scots intervention. Leith Provident Buildings Leith Edinburgh The Leith Provident Co-operative Society built their first department store in 1911 on Great Junction Street Leith Gurdwara Nanak Leith Edinburgh The first Sikh families to arrive in Edinburgh were in 1958 from the Punjab. The Sikh place of worship is a Gurdwara and the first Gurdwara was a house in Leith in 1964. In 1976 the present Gurdwara was opened at 1 Sheriff Brae Edinburgh. Previous to the Gurdwara it was St Thomas’s Church which was built in 1843. The Sikh religion was founded by Guru Nanak, he was born in 1469 A.D. It is believed that the Sikh religion was first preached in 1496 in the Punjab by Guru Nanak. Dr Andrew Bell School Leith Edinburgh Dr Bell's School Junction Street Leith was built in 1838 and acquired by Leith school board in 1882 from the Bell Trust. Dr Andrew Bell founded schools worldwide using the educational system that he founded. Andrew Bell was born in St Andrews in 1753. He became a Scottish Episcopalian priest and teacher who pioneered the Madras System of Education. He was founder of The Madras College St Andrews. He returned to Britain in 1871 and was a minister at Episcopal Chapel in Leith. Leith Swimming Baths Leith Edinburgh Leith swimming baths is a part of the original Bell’s School which was acquired by the Leith school board in 1896. Leith Vaults Leith Edinburgh The oldest warehouse and cellar for wine in the Leith Area is the Vaults previously known as the Black Vaults. The oldest part of the Vaults now is 1682, but were on this site much earlier possibly circa 1540. Porters’ Stone Leith Edinburgh The Porters Stone or Stingmans Plaque was originally in Tolbooth Wynd before it was moved to Sugarhouse Close Leith, then was put for safekeeping in the National Museum Edinburgh, the copy in Henderson street of the original carving 1670 gives a picture of how wines and spirits were transported from Leith. Leith was the main supplier of Wine to Edinburgh with circa 250,000 p.a. The Stingmen were the workers at the warehouse that moved the barrels of wine. Leith Improvement Scheme Memorial Stone First Artisans Dwellings Henderson Street was built as part of the Leith Improvement Scheme, a Bill which became an Act of Parliament known as the Artisans and Labourers Dwellings Act, Henderson Street was named after Dr John Henderson the lord Provost of Leith from 1875 to 1881 The area Henderson street was built on was previously over a dozen close’s which had terrible living conditions. Leith Links First Written Rules of Golf Leith Links is where the first rules of golf where written in 1744 for a golf tournament, 13 rules in all. There had only been 5 rules players had played to before. The oldest golf course to be mentioned in history is in fact Bruntsfield Links with the oldest golf club house the Golf Tavern. Which is where the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers were first based as were the oldest golfing society the Burghers (Royal Burgess Golfing Society) incorporated in 1735. Leith Links course has the honour of the first official tournament to rules. Link - Golf Rules and History Giants’ Brae Leith Links Edinburgh The are two small hills on Leith Links which both have names, the one pictured is “Giant’s Brae” and the other is “Lady Fyfe’s Brae”, these were said to be constructed as artillery mounds dated from 1560 when the siege of Leith took place. Pilrig House Leith Area Edinburgh The original Pilrig House was owned by Sir Patrick Moneypenny and he sold the land to Gilbert Kirkwood in 1623 who rebuilt the house in 1638. The Balfour family purchased the house in 1718. James Balfour’s great-grandson was Robert Louis (Balfour) Stevenson, Robert’s father married a member of the Balfour family and his great grandfather was born in Pilrig house in 1777. The Balfour family remained in Pilrig House till 1941. In 1971 a fire destroyed the house but luckily the history of the house and owners were seen to be important enough for the house to be rebuilt and restored to its original look in 1982 when the work started and is now complete Professor John Barlow Blue Plaque Professor John Barlow eminent Quaker scientist. Professor of Anatomy and Physiology at the Royal Veterinary College Edinburgh. He was a highly respected member of the Edinburgh scientific community. Much loved member of the Religious Society of Friends. Husband of Eliza Nicholson (1813-1894) and father of Alfred (1851-1899). Origins of Scottish Whisky The Water of Life Alcohol has been around since the Egyptians were building the Pyramids, giving the workers beer and bread to help them through the hot days. Wine has also been known to be in existence for up to 10,000 years through religious scripts. It is not known when Whisky was first made but records of distillation are shown from the 11th century. The first written record of whisky was in 1494. The name whisky originally from the Gaelic "Uisge Beatha", meaning 'water of life'. In 1644 the Scottish Government imposed a tax on whisky and in 1707 after the union of Scotland and England a malt tax was introduced on the 23 June 1725 which caused riots over Scotland, this indirectly increased the cost of making whisky, as malt is the main ingredient. In 1824 George Smith the originator of the Glenlivet whisky was the first to gain a legal licence to distil whisky when the English government introduced a law to legalize the production of whisky. The oldest bottlers of whisky are Cadenhead’s who have been bottling whisky since 1824. Whisky and all alcoholic drinks are restricted to persons of over 18 years and should not be consumed by anyone younger. Tartan Definition of Tartan Official definition of Tartan from the Scottish Register of Tartans Act (2008) Section 2 Section 2: A tartan is a design which is capable of being woven, consisting of two or more alternating coloured stripes which combine vertically and horizontally to form a repeated chequered pattern. Originally Tartan was normal everyday clothing which was made locally to the area you lived. Tartan was seen by the English as a form of uniform, an Act of parliament band the wearing of tartan in 1747, this was the Act of Proscription. This came about due to the Jacobite uprising which ended at the Battle of Culloden 1746. The Act of Proscription was ended by George III in 1782 which allowed highland dress to be worn again after 35 years being outlawed. There are 34 US States with their own tartan.

    Ormiston Attractions East Lothian The village of Ormiston was founded by John Cockburn in 1735 a main principal in the Agricultural Revolution. Ormiston Hall Ormiston Hall was built for John Cockburn and opened in 1748 and was the main Mansion House of the area. The hall was in ruins after a fire and very little remains next to where the hall stood is the remains of St Giles Parish Church built before the reformation circa 1230 close 1690 and the main church was demolished in 1730. Cockburn Halls Ormiston East Lothian Cockburn Halls are modern multi used shop and office spaces built circa 1930. In the centre at the front door is the Ormiston War Memorial. John Cockburn Cockburn Hall Ormiston East Lothian John Cockburn was born in 1695 in Ormiston and followed his father into politics and became a supporter of union with England. In 1707 on the Union, John became the MP for Haddingtonshire which he maintained until 1741. In 1714 John inherited his family estate in Ormiston East Lothian. John Cockburn initialised the changing of agriculture in Scotland when he change the old system and built farm steadings on large areas of sectioned land. The new deal gave tenants long lease, which were transferable to three generations so the family would benefited from the work they carried out on the land. Circa 1720 John decided to build a brewery and distillery in Ormiston due to the now large harvests. He then built Ormiston Village (1735) to a new town structure using a feuing of the lands. He also introduced the first bleachfield where cotton and linen would be laid out in fields to be bleached by the sun. East Lothian owes its reputation as the garden of Scotland to John Cockburn his success came at a price he died in debt after selling Ormiston to the Earl of Hopetoun in 1747, 10 years prior to his death. Mercat Cross Ormiston East Lothian The cross that stands in the centre of Ormiston Main street is the style of a 15th century cross. The cross not original used as a market cross it may have come from the old pre reformation church no documentation can be found on its origins. Robert Moffat Memorial Obelisk Ormiston East Lothian Robert Moffat was born in 1795 in Ormiston, East Lothian. He became a missionary in Africa and In 1823 he settled in is new home Kuruman where he lived for 49 years. He met with Livingstone in 1840 and persuaded him to come to Africa and the rest is history. The Rev. Robert Moffat D.D laid this stone on 9th June 1877 at the Livingstone Medical Missionary in the Cowgate Edinburgh. The memorial obelisk stands at the entrance to Moffat Village in East Lothian to his life as a missionary and the his life's' work "Among missionaries there was none Greater, none holier than he". Charles Maclaren Ormiston East Lothian Charles Maclaren was born on 7 October 1782 in Ormiston East Lothian he was a Scottish journalist and geologist. He co-founded The Scotsman newspaper. In 1822 Maclaren was the first person to successfully identify the correct position of the lost city of Troy. He died at his home in the Grange Edinburgh, 10 September 1866. Ormiston War Memorial Ormiston East Lothian Ormiston War memorial stands outside the Cockburn Halls. A bronze nude figure of a male standing with arms out wide. The bronze plaques, centre; 1st World War inscription panel reads; In honour and everlasting memory of the men of the parish of Ormiston who gave their lives for god and country in the Great War 1914-1918. The additional two panels one right and the other on the left are to the fallen in World War II 1936-1945. Great Yew Tree Ormiston East Lothian Ormiston has the said to be oldest layering yew-tree in Britain at over 1000 years old.     Chambers Street Edinburgh extended from Candlemaker Row to what is now Infirmary Street at High School Yards and was called Jamaica Street. (Ainslie’s map of Edinburgh 1580 – 1919). The First known name for the street which extended from Candlemaker Row at George IV Bridge included Chambers Street and Infirmary Street finishing in High School Yards was called Jamaica Street. The main attraction in Chambers Street is the National Museum of Scotland. The museum was modernised after a 2 year closure and was re-opened in July 2011. There are two parts to the building, the former Museum of Scotland and the modern extension of the building opened in 1998. The former Royal Museum opened in 1866. There are many things for adults and children to do and see on a cold wet summer day, such as becoming an astronaut. The museum is on 7 floors and has lifts and stairways connecting each area. Enter the Museum from the new extension and you will come across Sir Jackie Stewart’s Formula One Car. There is also a café and restaurant. Entry is free. The Edinburgh Dental Hospital and teaching School was formed in Chambers Street 1878. Due to the patient numbers it moved to Lauriston Lane in 1889. It returned to Chamber Street in 1894. A split between The Dental Hospital and teaching facility took place in 1948 when the Dental Hospital became part of the NHS and the Teaching School joined the University of Edinburgh. William Chambers was the Lord Provost of Edinburgh from 1865 to 1869. Look at the panels on the base of the statue. He was a bookseller, printer and publisher. William Playfair was a renowned architect and a leader of architectural methods. National Museum of Scotland Inside The School of Arts of Edinburgh Heriot-Watt history was started as the School of Arts of Edinburgh by Scottish businessman Leonard Horner on 16 October 1821 in Niddry Street as the world's first mechanics' institute, providing working men with education in technical subjects. They moved to a building in Adam Square in 1837. In 1852 it changed name to Watt Institution and School of Arts. The statue of Watt was unveiled in May 1854 Adam Square was demolished in 1870 for Chamber street to be built, they then moved to 25 Chambers Street in 1874. The Watt Institution officially became Heriot-Watt College in 1885 when they merged with The George Heriot Trust. The statue remained on Chambers Street until 1990, when it was moved to its current location at Heriot-Watt’s Riccarton Campus. Crown Office , 23 – 25 Chambers Street, Edinburgh was the site of Edinburgh’s Phrenological museum. It then became Heriot Watt College and the Crown Office. George Heriot ; A goldsmith and banker to King James VI, who left his fortune to fund education in Edinburgh. Leonard Horner; An educational and social reformer who founded the trailblazing Edinburgh School of Arts in 1821, the world’s first mechanics’ institute. George Combe President of the Edinburgh Phrenological Society, Lawyer and was a Scottish lawyer and a spokesman of the phrenological movement for over 20 years. He founded the Edinburgh Phrenological Society with his brother Andrew Combe in 1820 and wrote The Constitution of Man in 1828. The four heads of prominent contributors to the Society of Phrenology: Franz Joseph Gall, Johann Spurzheim, George Combe and Andrew Combe originally this was the main door to the museum No23 which closed in 1887. Guthrie Street is a link between Chambers Street and the Cowgate Edinburgh. There are steps from Chamber Street to Guthrie Street which was previously Horse Wynd before Chamber Street was built. Horse Wynd Joined Potterrow with the Cowgate. Walter Scott was born in College Wynd which was demolished and replaced with modern housing. The plaque can be seen on the wall at the corner of Guthrie Street and Chambers Street is to signify the location of the house where Sir Walter Scott was born in August 1771. James Africanus Horton (1835–1883) James Horton was born in Freetown Sierra Leone and was known as James Beale. He was the first African to graduate from Edinburgh University and went on to be a medical surgeon in the British Army. Baroness Jennie Lee (1904 – 1988) Baroness Lee of Asheridge known as Jennie Lee, was a Scottish politician. Baroness Jennie Lee was married to the Welsh Labour politician Aneurin Bevan from 1934 until his death in 1960. As Minister for the Arts 1964–1970, she was instrumental in the foundation of the Open University. The Jennie Lee building can be found in Drumsheugh Gardens Edinburgh, the home of the Open University offices in Scotland. The plaque reads. Francis Jeffrey was appointed Lord Advocate. Francis Jeffrey a member of the House of Commons introduced the Scottish Reform Bill in 1831. When the new Edinburgh streets were being built the street connecting the High Street with Waverley Station was named in his honour “Jeffrey Street”. George Edward Moore O.M., F.B.A. (1873 – 1958) G.E. Moore O.M. FBA (Order of merit and Fellow of the British Academy) lived at 11 buccleuch Place Edinburgh from 1904-1908 with his friend A.J. Ainsworth. He was one of the founders of Analytic Philosophy. He is also remembered for what is now commonly called “Moore’s Paradox”. Thomas Carlyle (1795 – 1881) Thomas Carlyle graduated from Edinburgh University became a teacher and then an essayist and author. His most successful publication was “The French Revolution: A History”. Thomas Carlyle was married to Jane Welsh after marrying they moved to Comely Bank in Edinburgh. Thomas Carlyle was deemed to be one of the influential writers of the period Moving to Chelsea he would entertain poets and authors such as Tennyson, Dickens, Ruskin and Thackeray. Thomas Carlyle was installed as Rector of the University of Edinburgh in 1865. There is a plaque in his honour at 22 Buccleuch Place Edinburgh. Dr Wong Fun (Huang Kuan) (1828 – 1878) Huang Kuan from Hsiang-shan, Canton China graduated with a Phd in medicine from Edinburgh University in 1857. He was the first Chinese student to graduate from Edinburgh University and it is also believed that he was the first Chinese student in Europe to receive a degree.     Edinburgh New Town, The Mound Edinburgh, Royal Mile Bank Street and North Bank Street Edinburgh Historic facts famous people and buildings. Where the Edinburgh New Town and Old Town meet. The Mound Bank Street, North Bank Street Mound Place, St Giles Street Edinburgh The Mound Edinburgh The Mound in the centre of Edinburgh links the Old Town with the New Town. The Mound was originally the excavations from the building of the New town piled up in the middle of the area that had been Nor Loch. This eventually provided a further access to and from the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh. At the foot of the mound is access to West Princes Street Gardens and opposite can be found the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and slightly further up the mound is the National Gallery of Scotland. On the corner with Market Street stands a statue in memorial to the Black Watch. On mound Place is the New Library which was built in 1846. The Mound then joins North Bank Street and the Bank Street before Joining the Royal Mile. ROYAL SCOTTISH ACADEMY OF ART MOUND EDINBURGH The oldest and most prestigious academy of contemporary art in Scotland. The Academy is active in the promotion of young artists from Scotland's Colleges of Art and Architecture and takes a lead role in promoting living artists in Scotland. Royal Scottish Academy seen with the entrance from Princes Street. Royal Scottish Academy MOUND PRECINCT is a Large open air paved space at the foot of the Playfair steps which is used for street performers (jugglers, acrobats fire eaters etc.) during the summer. With its location in the centre of Princes Street it is an ideal place to arrange to meet before touring or visiting the galleries that surround the square. On the left of the picture is the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and at the back, the National Gallery of Scotland. National Gallery of Scotland Mound Edinburgh The National Gallery of Scotland was opened in 1859 on the Mound and is now home to Scotland's greatest collection of European paintings and sculpture from the Renaissance to Post-Impressionism. It also includes a comprehensive collection of the major names in Scottish art. National Gallery BLACK WATCH ON THE MOUND The 11-foot high bronze statue of a Black Watch soldier commemorates over 200 members of the Regiment who were killed or wounded in the South African War of 1900-02. The Black Watch, the oldest Highland Regiment, was formed by General Wade in 1739 to police the Highlands at a time when many of the clans harboured pro-Jacobite sympathies. THE ASSEMBLY HALL (NEW COLLEGE) MOUND PLACE EDINBURGH The Assembly Hall was built in 1846 as a Theological college, now the New College and a home for the Church of Scotland in 1929. The General Assembly is held here annually in May. This is also where in 1989 the majority of the Scottish members of parliament signed a document to claim the right for Scotland to have an independent parliament. The Assembly hall was used as a debating hall of the Scottish Parliament for 5 years between 1999 -2004. The Assembly Hall has also been used by the Edinburgh International Festival for many years. The Spire behind the Assembly Hall is The Hub on the Castlehill. In the main courtyard of the New College stands a statue of John Knox the leader of the protestant reformation and founder of the Presbyterian Church. Born in 1514 and died in 1572 his grave is in the car park of St Giles Cathedral. WRITERS' MUSEUM LADY STAIR'S PLACE MOUND ENTRANCE is in Lady Stair’s House which was built in 1662 in Lady Stair's Close, Lawnmarket, Royal Mile, Edinburgh, (named after Elizabeth Countess Dowager of Stair, a fashion icon of her time). Lady Stair’s House is dedicated to the lives and work of Scotland's great literary figures. Rare collections include early editions, manuscripts, portraits, photographs and personal belongings of Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Robert L Stevenson. On paving stones and steps up from the mound and down from the Lawnmarket you will find inscriptions and verses. JAMES STUART BLACKIE NORTH BANK STREET EDINBURGH Look up above the shops on North Bank Street to see the window with the memorial to James Blackie a University of Edinburgh Professor in Greek and German. He left 250, 19th century Greek books to the University Library which are still being used by students today. He was born in Aberdeen and studied in Germany and Italy. He was the inspiration behind the founding of the Celtic chair of the University of Edinburgh. THE BANK MUSEUM BANK STREET EDINBURGH Opened in 2006 telling the story of money. The Bank of Scotland is the second longest surviving bank in the United Kingdom and was established just 1 year after the Bank of England in 1695 by a Scotsman, William Paterson. The Bank of Scotland was founded by John Holland an Englishman. Bank Museum Dr Robert Philip Bank Street Edinburgh The worlds’ first tuberculosis dispensary was opened in Bank Street Edinburgh by Dr Robert Philip in 1887. Sir (Dr) (Professor) Robert Philip pioneered the management, prevention, detection and treatment of tuberculosis (TB). On the wall in Bank Street a blue Plaque reads "Near this place in 1887, Dr Robert Philip founded a tuberculosis dispensary, the first clinic in the world dedicated to fighting a disease of which he foretold Man's eventual mastery. That vision has brought hope to many lands." Tuberculosis (TB) was the biggest killer in the UK by the middle of the 19th century and due to Sir Robert Philip it has been almost eradicated. Sir Robert Philip died at home in 9 Palmerston Road, in the Grange area of Edinburgh, on the 25th January 1939.     St Salvator's Chapel and Quad are the beginings of St Andrews University. The Clock tower with the ghost face and where hangings took place. A historic and interesting place to visit inside and outside. St Salvator's St Andrews University of St Andrews Originally St Andrews University circa 1550 was made up from three colleges. St Mary’s (1538) St Salvator’s (1450) and St Leonard’s (1512). In 1747 two colleges amalgamated. Forming the United College of St Salvator’s and St Leonard. St Salvator’s College being chosen as the home for the New United College. St Salvator's Clock Tower North Street St Andrews The tower which has a clock was built as a copy of Rules Tower in the Cathedral grounds with a flat roof. This was used circa 1545 as a gun emplacement to ward of potential invaders. The spire was added to the tower at a later date. The 2 images show the tower from the street and inside the quadrant. St Salvator's Clock Tower Plaque The St Salvator's clock and dials originally installed in 1853 by James Ritchie & Sons Clockmakers. Restored in 1999. St Salvator's Chapel St Salvator’s Chapel was founded in 1450 by Bishop James Kennedy as a College of the Holy Saviour. The main entrance to the chapel faces out onto North Street and not into the college courtyard. The Chapel had a dual role for both the college chapel and as a collegiate church for the community of St Andrews. St Salvator's Chapel Bishop Kennedy Bishop Kennedy decided to have his tomb constructed in his chapel. Between the consecration of the church and his death in 1465. In the recess is a large slab of black marble. Beneath is the tomb-chest in which Kennedy was interred. Provost Hugh Spens Set against the west wall of the chapel is the tombstone of Provost Hugh Spens who died in 1534. The memorial bears the only known illustration of the Scottish mediaeval academic garb of the period. St Salvator's Chapel Bishop Kennedy Coat of Arms James Kennedy was son of King Robert III daughter Mary. He was born 1408. He replace Bishop Wardlaw in 1440 being appointed by Pope Eugenius IV as Bishop of St Andrews. He was in 1444 appointed Chancellor of Scotland. He died in 1465 and place in his tomb in St Salvator’s Chapel Patrick Hamilton Cobbles (PH) The cobbles beneath the bell tower have the initials 'PH' set in to the cobbles, which marks the site of where 24-year-old Patrick Hamilton died in 1528, after being burnt at the stake for his Protestant beliefs. The Ghostly Face of Hamilton Look up above the gateway You will see a face carved in a stone This is said to be the face of The Martyred Patrick Hamilton. Patrick Hamilton Plaque The initials on the pavement nearby mark the spot where Patrick Hamilton member of the University was burned at the stake on 29th February 1528 at the age of 24. On the continent he had been greatly influenced by Martin Luther, and on his return to St Andrews he began to teach Lutheran Doctrines. Having been tried and found guilty of heresy he was condemned to death. Thus becoming the first martyr of the Scottish Reformation. St Salvator's Quadrangle The United College of St Salvator’s and St Leonard, is one of the oldest remaining parts of the University of St Andrews. St Andrews University had extended to three colleges.   St Salvator’s (1450), St Leonard’s (1512) and St Mary’s (1538). In 1747, the union of the two Arts colleges formed the United College of St Salvator and St Leonard. St Salvator’s College was chosen as the home for the new United College, the majority of the current buildings date from the 19th and early 20th century.
