East Linton Attractions East Lothian East Linton Village East Lothian Scotland East Linton is a beautiful small village just of the A199 or A1 beside the River Tyne. On the north side of the A1 is where you will find the village and Preston Mill on the south side is where you will find Hailes Castle. In the centre of the village is a water fountain with cherubs and lights. The old parish church dates from circa 1770 with parts from the original church circa 1250. The Castle has been on this site circa 1240 the owner the Gourlay family from Northumbria lived here a well heeled family of the day. The Castle then became the Hepburn family seat for the the next century before it was put to siege by Archibald Dunbar who killed all within the Castle. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here 1567, Cromwell attacked and damaged the Castle in 1650 and lived in by the Dalrymple Family before moving to a mansion house near Musselburgh in 1709 to which they called Newhailes after their estate and Castle at East Linton. Hailes Castle East Linton East Lothian Hailes Castle was originally founded as a fortified tower house in 1240, one of the oldest constructions of its kind still in existence in Scotland. The castle stands on a headland beside the River Tyne. Also you can see Traprain Law the site of the largest Roman treasure found outside Rome. This is also thought to be a site of a Roman Fort. Preston Mill and Phantassie Do’cot East Linton East Lothian The Preston mill has stood on this site since circa 1590 and was still in use until 1959. This is the best example of a meal mill from the 16th century in Scotland. Preston Mill’s machinery is still in working order. It is situated close to the River Tyne near the village of East Linton in East Lothian. There are tours that give a great idea of the conditions of the time and how things work. St Andrew’s Kirk East Linton St Andrew’s Church was built in 1843 to house the breakaway Free Church of Scotland, and was used as a school house on weekdays. The bell in the church as been in place since 1884 a memorial to Mr Scott. The clock was then installed 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. East Linton Fountain East Lothian The fountain 1882 with lamps, standing in scalloped iron basin; scalloped canopy above, with four children pouring water from urns. The Fountain was presented to the Burgh of East Linton by John Drysdale who emigrated to Buenos Aires and became a wealthy businessman. Prestonkirk House East Lothian Scotland Prestonkirk House can be seen at the entrance to Stories Park. Stories Park takes its name from the Storie family of veterinary surgeons, who lived in The Square and kept racehorses in their ‘park’. Francis Storie (d.1875) was East Linton’s chief magistrate 1866-72. Storie Park the first house was a poorhouse built in 1864 for the poor of East Lothian. East Linton Falls River Tyne East Lothian Scotland The water through the Linn and pool, the old Tyne bridge (Lintern Briggis) built circa 1550 that gives access to the village over the river and the main crossing of the Tyne in the 1500’s used by the English Armies. This area is great for walkers and explorers with much to see and beautiful scenic routes and t finish it of a hotel restaurant and bar and free parking. If you follow the Tyne up to the Linn Rocks, you come to the original ‘Lintoun’, where the settlement began circa 1000 years ago. Preston kirk East Linton East Lothian Scotland Prestonkirk East Linton is Dedicated to St Baldred, The Church tower built circa 1631 and the main building from 1770 in the burial ground can be found the graves of Andrew Meikle, inventor of the threshing machine, and George Rennie, agriculturalist and brother of John Rennie, the civil engineer. John Rennie Memorial East Linton East Lothian The Memorial to John Rennie can be seen on the road out of East Linton towards Dunbar. John Rennie was born on 7 June 1761 at Phantassie Farm near the memorial. He was the engineer who built the Waterloo Bridge in London and it is believed part of the memorial is built with stone work from the old Waterloo bridge. The inscription on the plaque reads; The memorial to John Rennie (1761 -1824) civil engineer was erected in 1936 and relocated at this site in 1981 by The East Lothian Antiquarian and Field Naturalists Society The Institution of Engineers Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons Limited. Pencraig Standing Stone East Linton East Lothian This Standing tone is a Prehistoric three-sided pillar which can be seen from the old AI just before East Linton turn off. In the background is Berwick Law a Iron age hill fort. Could this be a distance marker from ancient times. Drylaw Hill Do'cot East Linton East Lothian The Beehive do'cot that stands on Drylaw Hill was built mid 1500's the holes at the roof are to allow the birds in and the door is for access to the birds for fresh meat. Great views of East Linton from here. Smeaton-Hepburn Estate East Linton East Lothian Smeaton- Hepburn Estate was the home of the Hepburns for four centuries. The mansion House has long been removed and now is a country park with one of the few man made Lakes in Scotland, formed in 1820. Smeaton nursery and cafe is a Victorian Walled Garden. Barnton at one time was outside of Edinburgh and became a commuting village with Cramond. Now it is a area of mainly large detached houses. Not far from Cammo on the other side of the main route Barnton attractons, the oldest established Golf Club in the world. Barnton and Cammo Edinburgh Barnton Edinburgh The Royal Burgess Golfing Society (The Burghers) 1735 The Royal Burgess Golfing Society near Cramond the Oldest Golf Club in the world. There were six golf clubs that played their golf at Bruntsfield Links of which The Burghers were one, they were the first to be instituted in 1735 the club house the Old Golf Tavern was used by all clubs. circa 1780 the society became known as the Edinburgh Burgess Golfing Society and by Royal Edict dated 30 September 1929 His Majesty King George V commanded that the name be changed to The Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh. The Club moved to its present home at Barnton in 1895 designed by a Musselburgh Golfer Willie Park Jnr who won the open Championship in 1887 and 1889. His family were golfers, his father Willie Park Snr won the first Open in 1860 and also in 1863, 1866 and 1875 and his uncle Mungo Park won in 1874 The Royal Burgess Golfing Society Instituted in 1735. The Plaque shows golfers of the original Burghers at Bruntsfield Links where they first played for a silver putter. The Burghers now The Royal Burgess is the oldest golf club in the world. The first Golf Club House being Ye Old Golf Tavern. Barnton Quarry (The Secret Bunker) Presently under construction to be a visitor site The Secret Bunker can be found just off Clermiston Road North there is a small car park at the side of the road and it is a short walk to the Bunker. This was one of the largest underground military installations in the UK. The purpose of the bunker was to house a radar detection unit and Royal Air Force fighter response command protecting the UK from Russian long range nuclear threats. This facility was a national secret installation for many years. There were 3 other similar sites in the UK Kelvedon Hatch (London), Shipton (Yorkshire), Bawburgh (Norfolk) These 4 sites were the top of the Radar command. Cammo Cammo Edinburgh Cammo House Ruins Nature Reserve Edinburgh Cammo House was built in the early part of the 1690s by a John Menzies a wealthy businessman and was later sold to Sir John Clerk in 1710. Sir John Clerk with an interest in landscaping set out the gardens of Cammo house over the next several years. The house is now a ruin and the lands are now open to the public. Things to look for are the ruin of Cammo House, the said to be oldest and largest Ash tree in Edinburgh, the East Lodge, Cammo Tower, The Cammo Stane and if very lucky the Ghosts of Cammo House. Cammo Ancient Tree Planted 1854 Cammo Nature Reserve Cammo Stables Cammo Standing Stone Cammo Canal Cammo Water Tower Cammo water tower was built in the 1870’s and supplied Cammo house with water. West Lothian Linlithgow | Blackness | The Binns Midhope West Lothian Attractions Blackness Castle Blackness Castle was built in 1445 for the Crichton family one of Scotland's most powerful families. Blackness Castle was taken from the Crichton's in 1453 by the then king James II. This was a Castle that only Cromwell over came in 1650 during the rampage Cromwell led through Scotland burning everything he could. Blackness Castle was converted into a prison circa 1540 and was used to imprison the enemies of James V and held many famous prisoners of the crown Cardinal Beaton being the most famous. Covenanters and later war prisoners from the wars with France, Spain and America it ceased to be a prison circa 1850. The original entrance to the castle was blocked of circa 1550 and moved to face the sea making it harder to breach. The House of Binns The House of Binns has been home to the Dalyell’s for 400 years. This house was built circa 1620 by Thomas Dalyell a wealthy merchant from Edinburgh during the reign of King James VI and 1st, where he worked for the royal court in London. On massing his fortune he returned to Edinburgh and purchased the lands and manor house of the Binns. He then demolished the old manor house and built the present house. A fascinating house and well worth a visit. Linlithgow Cross Well The Cross Well or fountain where fresh spring water flowed is where the town Cross stood. The Fountain in the shape of a Crown was erected in 1807. The original Cross Well was built in 1628. The present Cross Well Fountain is an exact replica. St Michaels Church On 22nd May 1242, the Church of St Michael of Linlithgow was consecrated by the Bishop of St Andrews St Michael's church over the centuries has been burnt damaged used as a store house, stables and barracks. It has even been used by the University of Edinburgh during the plague. James IV, when visiting the church saw a ghost which warned him that no good would come of his exploits, and the Battle of Flodden Field and not to go. He was the last King to die in Battle. Mary Queen of Scots was christened in St Michaels next to Linlithgow Palace where she was born. St Michael’s Church Gothic Timber Pulpit This is a magnificent Church which has had many of the rulers of Scotland attend. The Gothic timber pulpit is surrounded by 3 carvings of Queens Elizabeth II, Mary Queen of Scots and St Margaret. (Dec 1542 – Feb 1587) A Statue of Mary Queen of Scots stands in the grounds of Linlithgow Palace. Mary, daughter of King James V of Scotland. Was to became Queen, 6 days after she was born on the death of her father. Mary of Guise was her mother and had a Palace built in Edinburgh on the north side of Castlehill. Mary, Queen of Scots was born in Linlithgow Palace on 8 December 1542. Linlithgow Palace St Michael's Church In 1337 Edward III's English army set fire to Linlithgow, which was largely built of wood. In 1349 the Black Death (the plague) reached Scotland and killed a third of the population of Edinburgh. The King, his parliament and court took refuge in Linlithgow from Holyrood to escape the plague. There were more fires in 1411 and 1424 destroying most of the town. In 1424 James I returned from exile in England and built the Palace at Linlithgow, starting the work in 1425. James IV and James V, made changes to the Palace. James V making it a home for his wife Mary of Guise. James VI moved to London in 1603, where he added to his title James I of England. Linlithgow Palace Linlithgow Museum (Annet House) When in Linlithgow after seeing the Palace and St Michaels Church, go to the Annet House Museum which has many interesting exhibits including a scale model of the Linlithgow Cross which stands at the foot of the road to Linlithgow Palace. Another exhibit, is the flags of the Scotch Brigade, one of Scotland's oldest infantry regiments the exhibit that tells the story of Mary Queen of Scots and Linlithgow Palace. Regent Moray’s Assassination On January 23rd 1570 in Linlithgow, Scotland, James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray, Regent of Scotland on his way through Linlithgow was shot and killed by James Hamilton of Bothwell Haugh. He was the first assassination by a firearm in recorded history. James Hamilton supported Mary Queen of Scots and fought against James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray (Regent) at the battle of Langside. See the plaque on what was the Sherriff Court (now Court Residence) commemorating this event. A stain glass window can be seen of the Regent Moray shooting in St. Giles Edinburgh. The inscription on the plaque reads; On the street opposite this tablet James Stewart Earl of Murray Regent of Scotland Was shot by James Hamilton of Bothwell Haugh on 20th January 1570 Erected in 1875 The Winged St Michael Sculpture Linlithgow town's ancient burgh seal has the image of St Michael, and a dog (The Black Bitch). To commemorate the Burgh seal a sculpted bronze of each have been erected in Linlithgow. St Michael slaying a Dragon St Michael, is the patron saint of Linlithgow, and the Guardian Angel watching over the towns inhabitants. The ‘Black Bitch’ Sculpture A Hunting Dog The actual reason for the dog is not known but could be a dog that helped his master when his master was chained to a tree on the island in the Loch. Whitekirk Attractions East Lothian Whitekirk is a small village with long history that stands between North Berwick and East Linton in East Lothian. The Village of Whitekirk has been mentioned since the 8th century by St Balbred. Drem Village in East Lothian is close to Drem Airfield that was used in the World Wars. Drem airfield closed as a station in 1946, There is an RAF museum at the present airfield. There are many that fell in the wars at rest in Drem cemetery. Dirleton Village Cemetery War Graves In this small graveyard are the graves of World War casualties that served at RAF Drem. Queen Margaret founded a ferry service to help transport religious pilgrims across the river. For over seventy years the Forth Bridge was the only connection across the Firth of Forth without a boat. "Painting the Forth Bridge” is a local expression for a never-ending task, as soon as the painting of the bridge was finished the work would have to start again. The Forth Rail Bridge is the oldest steel constructed cantilever railway bridge in the world. The bridge was designed by Benjamin Baker who was knighted for the work he carried out on the Forth Rail Bridge. He also was involved with the construction of the Aswan Dam. Forth Bridges Forth Road Bridge The first plans for a road crossing were made in the 1740s and were finally completed over 200 years later. The Forth Road Bridge was opened in 04 / 09/ 1964. The Forth Road Bridge is a suspension bridge that spans the Firth of Forth from the Lothians to Fife. The bridge replaced the old ferry service that was the only way to cross the river without having to travel up to the only other crossing at Kincardine. The bridge was designed by Mott, Hay and Anderson and Freeman Fox and Partners. Tolbooth South Queensferry The Tolbooth in South Queensferry is located on the High Street, have been in place around 1630 with the present clock-tower built in 1720. There are two bells in the tower dated 1694 and 1723. The bell dated 1694 was donated by the seamen of South Queensferry. The Priory Church of St Mary is the oldest recorded building in Queensferry dating from 1441. The Carmelites were invited to Queensferry by George Dundas of Dundas in 1330. This was a tradition when moving into your family home, a marriage stone would be inscribed on the wall of their house for all to see. The Black Castle The House coloured black on the High Street built in 1626 is the oldest surviving house in South Queensferry. When the original owner William Lawrie a sea-captain was lost at sea with his ship and crew, his house maid was accused of paying a beggar-woman to cast a spell to sink the ship, both were tried as witches and found guilty and were burnt at the stake. The Black Castle was also where in the 18th century smugglers would bring in through tunnels from the shore, barrels of contraband brandy. Inchgarvie Island (The Island Fortress) The history of the Island that supports the leg of the Forth Rail Bridge goes back to 832 A.D. when Angus / Oengus mac Fergus (II) King of the Picts killed Athelstan the Anglian King in a battle in 832 AD at Athelstaneford and to warn intended invaders he put his head on a spike for all to see. A very mixed up legend as King Athelstan was born circa 895 and died at 30 years in circa 925, but as a Scot, I believe the English could not have a Pictish King kill the most popular king at the height of his reign. Its easy to change dates when very few records were written. The Facts The facts we do know are that there is a site of a castle built by King James IV in 1491. The island of Inchgarvie was of strategic importance as with no bridges the island was between South and North Queensferry and was also near the Roman forts at Cramond and Bo’ness at the end of the Antonine Wall. In 1497, the island was (along with Inchkeith, a few miles away) used as an isolated refuge for victims of the contagious disease (syphilis). Between 1519 and 1671, the island was the site of a prison within the castle. In 1580, Inchgarvie and Inchkeith, was made a place of exile for the plague-stricken of Edinburgh. The leg of the Forth Rail Bridge uses it as a foundation. Hawes Inn The Hawes Inn dates back from the 17th century and stands across from Hawes Pier and the Rail Bridge in South Queensferry. It features in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Kidnapped during the Jacobite uprisings. Hawes Pier Hawes Pier is directly under the Forth Rail Bridge and is the point for boats to pick up and drop off passengers from the cruise ships and the boarding point for the Island tours. RNLI has its base here to cover the Forth Estuary. RNLI Hawes Pier South Queensferry Hawes Pier is also the base for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Founded in 1824 with one aim to save peoples lives at sea. The Loony Dooks The name is a combination of lunatic and dunk. An event held every year on the first day of the year (January 1st) Any one can join in as all you have to do is dive into the freezing waters of the Firth of Forth on New Year's Day in whatever clothing takes your fancy. Fancy dress, swim wear or a three piece suit, your choice. The event takes place from 9 a.m. on the beach at South Queensferry pictured left. Forth Bridge Memorial Thousands of Briggers have worked building, maintaining and restoring the bridge over its 100 plus years of history. A 7 foot high bronze memorial stands at each end of the Rail Bridge in memory of the men who died constructing the bridge, and also to celebrate all that were involved in its completion. You can also see a replica Loch Ness Monster hiding in the Bushes nea rto the shore. South Queensferry Museum This is where the story of the construction of the Forth Bridges can be seen. There are also displays relating to the ferry passage started in the 1100s, fascinating objects and photographs and the history of the town. The Burry Man, Distilleries The Black Castle. All to be seen in the Museum at 53 High Street South Queensferry. South Queensferry Museum The Burry Man Queensferry Museum The Burry Man is a local man covered from head-to-toe in sticky burrs covering his entire body, leaving only the shoes, hands and two eye holes exposed. He walks around the town collecting money for charity. It is a great honour to be picked as the Burry Man as it has been a tradition for over 300 years. The event takes place once a year at the Ferry Fair. Stand face-to-face with the Burry Man in the Queensferry Museum. Hopetoun House Lady Margaret Hamilton had the original House built in 1699 for her son Charles Hope who became the 1st Earl of Hopetoun in 1703. Hopetoun House took almost 8 years to complete and became the home of the Hope family from that day to this. In 1721 the house was refurbished and extended to what can be seen today, a magnificent ancestral home. Hopetoun House is well worth a visit for its superb interiors and 6500 acres to explore. Hopetoun House Dundas Castle 1818 Dundas Castle, in Kirkliston on the outskirts of South Queensferry on Dundas Hill was built in 1424 after the 1st Duke of Albany Robert Stewart Regent of Scotland, who ruled Scotland from 1402 to 1420 due to James I being imprisoned in London granted a license to build a Keep in 1416. The original Dundas Castle or Tower is a massive 15th century keep of four floors and a flat roof. This was extended in 1436. The present Dundas Castle was extended again in 1818 as it stands now with the original Keep still standing in the left corner. Dundas Castle also served as the headquarters for protecting the Forth Bridge. Inchgarvie Island was a gift from James IV to the Dundas family which gave them the rights to build a fortification(Castle) on the Island to protect the sea ways from invaders. The Castle was also visited by both Oliver Cromwell during the period after the battle of Dunbar and the occupation of Edinburgh Castle December 1650 and the Battle of Inverkeithing, July 1651. When Cromwell became ill and his troops were based around Queensferry. Charles I visited Dundas Castle during his visit to Edinburgh in 1461 when James Dundas was Knighted by Charles I. Dundas Tower (rear with Flag) GLENFORTH DISTILLERY SOUTH QUEENSFERRY Glenforth Distillery 1828 South Queensferry has been linked with whisky distilling for over 170 years the first distillery was built in 1828 near the harbour, to allow the ships to load and unload their cargo without a further journey to the distillery by road.
