King's Stables Road where King James IV had stables and where Jousting tournaments took place between Knights of all countries. Access to Princes Street Gardens King’s Stables Road Grassmarket Edinburgh King’s Stables Road joins the Old town at the Grassmarket, with the New Town at Lothian Road, towering over King's Stables Road to the east is Edinburgh Castle and the Castle Rock. To the west is a car park where the Stables once stood and West Port Suburbs where Burke and Hare the murders once lived. The Kings Bridge which stretches over the King’s Stables Road is where the old town is joined to the New Town at Johnston Terrace and Castle Terrace. The street name originates from when the Stables of the King were on the west side of the street. You will also find the west gate entrance to West Princes Street Gardens in King’s Stables Road and the entrance to St Cuthbert’s Church. There is a Cottage that stands in King's Stables Road (King's Stables Cottage) to the east the only building in the street on that side. Royal Jousting Tournaments Chapel Wynd King's Stables Road Edinburgh Beneath the Castle walls the Royal Jousting Tournaments once took place. This was the ultimate test for Knights from many countries. Held by King James IV (last king to died in battle1513. During the reign of the Chivalrous and splendid James IV (who was crowned in Kelso) Edinburgh became celebrated throughout all Europe as the scene of Knightly feats. The favourite place for Royal tournaments was a spot of ground just below the Castle rock and near the King’s stables. There, James in particular, assembled the nobles by proclamation, for jousting, offering such meeds of honour as a golden-head lance, or similar favours. Presented by his own hand or that of some beautiful woman. Knights came from all countries to take part in these jousts. During the reign of James the IV Edinburgh became the resort of men high in every department of science and art circa 1500. This bridge has four obelisk two on each side that dominates the central arch where the road goes through. The King's Stables Road from Lothian Road is one way and no access is available from the Grassmarket to Lothian Road by car. St Cuthbert's R.C. Church Edinburgh St Cuthbert's Church can be access from King's Stables Road. St Cuthbert is believed to have founded a church by the side of the Nor Loch at the foot of the Castle Rock. Edinburgh has Greyfriars Bobby who died in 1872 at the age of 16 years and San Diego has Bum the vagabond dog who died in 1898 age 12 years. EDINBURGH CASTLE E SPLANADE Edinburgh Castle Esplanade has many memorial plaques and a statues looking at Edinburgh Castle from the Esplanade to the left is the Royal Palace where the flag pole with flag ar situated.and above the main entrance at the drawbridge id the Half Moon Battery to the right is the Forewell Battery and Mills Mount. During the months of July and August is the main showcase of Edinburgh. This is when The Fringe Festival and Edinburgh International Festival takes place and tourists from around the world can be seen in their 100s of thousands. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade Castle Drawbridge The drawbridge at the entrance to Edinburgh Castle spanning the moat which helped protect the Castle from intruders. On guard on either side of the drawbridge are statues, on the right is William Wallace and the left is Robert the Bruce when facing the castle. Above the gateway, can be seen the coat of arms and motto of the Regiment of Scotland, who were based at Edinburgh Castle until the amalgamation of the Scottish regiments in 2006. On the left side facing the Edinburgh Castle drawbridge stands Robert I, known as Robert the Bruce, became King of Scots on 25 March 1306. At the Battle of Bannockburn in June 1314, he led a Scottish army and defeated the English army lead by Edward II. To confirm an independent Scottish monarchy in 1320 a letter was sent to Pope John XXII declaring that Robert the Bruce was their rightful monarch. This letter was the 'Declaration of Arbroath' and it asserted the antiquity of the Scottish people and their monarchy. In 1324 Robert the Bruce received papal recognition as king of an independent Scotland. Robert died on 7 June 1329. He was buried in Dunfermline Abbey and his heart is buried in Melrose Abbey. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade William Wallace Statue Sir William Wallace (Braveheart). On the right side facing the Edinburgh Castle drawbridge stands two mighty warriors. William Wallace was born circa 1270. At Stirling Bridge 1297 he defeated the English army. Around 1298 he was knighted and appointed 'guardian of the kingdom'. On the 22 July 1298, the Scottish army lead by Wallace battled the English arms of Edward I near Falkirk, the Scots were heavily defeated but Wallace escaped. Edward hated Wallace and put a price on his head. Wallace was finally captured on the 3 August 1305 in Robroyston, north of Glasgow and transported to London. He was charged and tried with treason, which he denied, saying he had never sworn allegiance to the English king. His execution was held on 23 August 1305, where he was hung, drawn and quartered. His head was placed on London Bridge, and his limbs displayed in Newcastle, Berwick, Stirling and Perth. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade Sir William Alexander Plaque First Baron of Nova Scotia In 1621, King James granted Sir William Alexander the land in North America between New England and Newfoundland, as Nova Scotia ("New Scotland"). To promote the settlement of Nova Scotia, the Baronetage of Nova Scotia was created in 1624. Scots Law, baronets had to "take sasine" by symbolically receiving the earth and stone of the land of which they were baronet. To make this possible, as Nova Scotia was so far away, the King declared that sasine could be taken either in Nova Scotia or, "at the Castle of Edinburgh as the most eminent and principal place of Scotland". Edinburgh Castle Esplanade The King’s Own Scottish Borderers Memorial On the 19th March 1689 David Leslie Earl of Leven gathered a regiment of soldiers within two hours to defend the City of Edinburgh. For Leven’s regiment’s gallantry in defending Edinburgh and later at the Battle of Killiecrankie with a resounding victory for the Jacobite’s lead by James VII of Scotland and II of England, the magistrates of Edinburgh gave the unique right of recruiting by the beat of the drum, marching through the Edinburgh streets with drums beating and flags flying and bayonets fixed. The regiment was later named The King’s Own Scottish Borderers. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade Field Marshal His Royal Highness Frederick Duke of York The Duke of York (1763-1827) was appointed Commander in Chief of the British Army in 1795. His parents King George III and his mother Queen Charlotte were instrumental in shaping Edinburgh’s New Town with streets named by and after them. King George III was the first King of Great Britain and Ireland. King George III King George III (George William Frederick) was born 4 June 1738 in London. He became king in October 1760 at 22. His wife was Charlotte and they had 16 children, 10 sons and 6 daughters and were married for 57 years. He died in January 1820 at 81. During his reign he had Edinburgh’s new town built and purchased Buckingham House in London in 1762 which later became Buckingham Palace. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade Scottish Horse Memorial Cross This is a memorial to the Scottish Horse Regiment who were killed during the South African War of 1901-2. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade The Runic Cross The Runic Cross was erected in 1862 for the memory of the officers, non-commissioned officers and private soldiers of the 78 highland regiment who died at the suppression of the First Relief of Lucknow in 1857 during the Indian Mutiny (1857-59). Eight men of the 78th Highland Regiment were awarded the Victoria Cross and the regiment also received the Victoria Cross during the campaign. The troubles started due to the bullets being covered with pig fat which they had to bite. Putting pork of any kind in their mouths is against the religious beliefs of Hindus and Muslims. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade 72nd Highlanders The Obelisk was erected in memory of the officers, Non-commissioned officers and men of the Duke of Albany's 72nd highlanders who died in the Afghan campaigns of 1878, 1879 and 1880. Fountain Princess Louise Her Royal Highness, Marchioness of Lorne, 9th Duchess of Argyll and Queen Victoria’s daughter. She had many honours bestowed upon her. The 91st Argyllshire Regiment name changed in her honour to 91st (Princess Louise's Argyllshire Highlanders) Regiment of Foot. She had a strong connection with Canada and a province (Alberta), a mountain (Alberta) and villages of Caroline and Alberta named after her. The inscription on the memorial Drinking Fountain above the trough reads; THE PRINCESS LOUISE’S ARGYLLSHIRE HIGHLANDERS. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade Gordon Highlanders This memorial is to the officers and men of the Gordon Highlanders who lost their lives in the South African war from 1899 to 1902 in Natal, Transvaal, Cape Colony and The Orange Free State. The Gordon Highlanders was an army infantry regiment from 1881 until 1994. The regiment took its name from the Clan Gordon and recruited principally from Aberdeen and the North-East of Scotland. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade 78th Highlanders Memorial Celtic Cross The Celtic Cross was erected in memory of Colonel Kenneth Douglas Mackenzie a member of the 92nd Highlanders for forty-two years. Whittingehame Attractions East Lothian Whittingehame House East Lothian Balfour Family Whittingehame Estate near Haddington East Lothian was purchased by James Balfour in 1817 when he had Whittingehame House built. He also had the village moved as it obstructed his view from his new house. James Balfour’s grandson Arthur Balfour, who was born in Whittingehame House served as Prime Minister from 1902 to 1905. As Foreign Secretary during the First World War he issued the “Balfour Declaration” which later led to the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Viscount Traprain (Earl of Balfour) change Whittingehame House into a school between 1939 and 1941 for Jewish refugee children. Circa 200 children attended the school over the period. It then returned to a family home and then in 1950 for circa 10 years it was used as a school once again before being renovated into separate apartments. Whittingehame Parish Church East Lothian Whittingehame is a small village between Haddington and Dunbar just south of East Linton. The first church in the area was established by St Cuthbert circa 660, near Luggate (no remains of the church can be seen). In 1225 a new church at Whittingehame was built dedicated by the Bishop of St Andrews on 7 May 1245. After time the church needed replaced and in 1722 a new church was built. In 1820 James Balfour rebuilt the church which can be seen today. Whittingehame most famous resident was Arthur Balfour (Prime Minister of Britain) who is buried in the family aisle in the church. Whittingehame Tower In 1372 George de Dunbar, 10th Earl of March, gave to James Douglas of Dalkeith, (2nd Earl of Douglas and Mar) the manor of Whittingehame. The Douglas family remained owners over the next 300 years as the property transferred on marriage. Elizabeth (1632–1668) daughter of Sir Arthur Douglas married Alexander Seton in 1652 and their daughter also Elizabeth married William Hay of Duns in 1695. They in turn sold the lands and property to James Balfour 1817. Whittingehame Arboretum Whittingehame arboretum has many different varieties of tree, The oldest is over 700 years old a Yew tree that radius is enormous. Other trees are the Blue Gum one of the earliest trees planted in 1846. There is a Monkey Puzzle tree, beech trees, Acer pseudoplatanus 'Variegatum' and Lebanese Cedar. Whittingehame Yew Tree The Whittingehame Yew tree over 700 years old and 60 foot (19 mtrs) high. One of a few Yew trees that can be seen in the Lothians others are in Colinton where Robert Louis Stevenson would play on a swing in the churchyard. Ormiston Yew probably the Whittingehame Walled Garden The walled garden was maintained by Miss Alice Balfour while living at Whittingehame here husband, Lord 1905 Lord Arthur James Balfour (1st Earl of Balfour) had a Temple built outside the garden wall in 1905. He also installed Large gates to the walled garden. Lady Eleanor's Cottage, a 19th century Gothic cottage There is also a wellhead in the garden of the Tower and the Balfour palm tree crest appears on the garden gate dated 1956. Whittingehame War Memorial East Lothian The 1st World War memorial stands opposite the driveway to the Whittingehame Parish Church to commemorate the lives lost in the 1st World War. The Whittingehame War Memorial was unveiled by Arthur Balfour, Prime Minister, 1st earl of Balfour of Whittingehame and Viscount Traprain was born July 25, 1848 in Whittingehame House in 1920. Adam Black East Princes Street Gardens Adam Black was born in Charles Street Edinburgh in Feb of 1784, the son of a builder and educated at the High School and Edinburgh University. He was twice Lord Provost of Edinburgh. In 1826 he was the main bookseller in Edinburgh. He published the 7th, 8th and 9th editions of Encyclopaedia Britannica. He died of old age, 89 almost twice as long a life as most lived in these times. He is buried in the Dean Cemetery less than a mile from where he lived. John Wilson made his name writing for Blackwood's Magazine under the pseudonym of Christopher North. Niddry Street Niddry Street Royal Mile Edinburgh Niddry Street originally called Niddry Wynd (Nudreis Wynd) is one of the oldest thoroughfares in old Edinburgh. The original Wynd would have been angled further west after re-positioning when the South Bridge was built. The Wynd extended across Cowgate to what is now South Niddry Street where the underground caverns have been found which were linked with the area that was previous to the south bridge being built. In 1750 when Niddry Wynd was widened it became Niddry Street. There were a number of important buildings which included St Cecilia’s Hall built in 1762 as a concert Hall and still exist to this day at the foot of Niddry Street as a Music Museum. Niddry Wynd was said to be named after a magistrate of Edinburgh in 1437 a Robert Niddry a member of the Niddry family of Wauchop. St Cecilia’s Music Museum Niddry Street Edinburgh St Cecilia’s Hall was built for the Musical Society of Edinburgh in 1762 by Robert Mylne (Milne) a Scottish architect and Stone mason from a famous Edinburgh family of builders and stonemasons. The Musical Society of Edinburgh previously occupied St Mary’s Chapel from 1728 – 1762 when they moved to St Cecilia’s Hall which was purpose built for them by Robert Milne in 1762. St Cecilia’s Hall had an auditorium that held 500 seated guests and concerts were held daily starting in the early evening and were always very well attended. Niddry Wynd was widened circa 1750 and was renamed as a Niddry Street. St Cecilia’s Hall is now part of the University of Edinburgh and has undergone a lengthy renovation. St Cecilia’s Hall is now a musical instrument museum and concert Hall which makes it one of the oldest remaining concert halls in Britain and oldest in Scotland still in use. Music Museum Dickson’s Close High Street Royal Mile Edinburgh Dickson’s Close in the High Street on the Royal Mile Edinburgh was demolished when Niddry street was widened. All that remains is the Street sign above the door of the Radisson Blu Hotel. One of the Close’s occupants was a David Allan who was dubbed the “Scottish Hogarth” his illustrations and etchings were of great quality. He died in Edinburgh and is gravestone can be seen in the Old Calton Graveyard. Cant’s Close High Street Royal Mile Edinburgh Cants Close was housing for the members of the Anglican Church. Cants Close Melrose Close Dickson’s Close and Niddry Wynd all were adjoining and were part of a very upmarket area for the nobility. The Cant family lived in the close for circa 100 years. Adam Cant 1403, Alexander Cant 1514 a wealthy family with land in many pars of Edinburgh. The Building was renovated in 1989 over a period of 15 months. Melrose Close High Street Royal Mile Edinburgh Melrose Close was were the Abbot of Melrose (Andrew Durie) had his residence circa 1530 and the close was named after him. It was also known as Rosehaugh Close after Sir George McKenzie of Rosehaugh King’s Advocate. Sir George McKenzie (George Bloody Mackenzie) is still known today due to his tomb in Greyfriars which is said to be haunted. Blackfriars Street (Wynd) Royal Mile Edinburgh Blackfriars Street originally known as the Preaching Friar’s Vennel and Blackfriars Wynd. The name given due to the Street leading to the Black Friary of the Dominican Monks founded by Alexander II in 1230. The Wynd widened and became a Street and it was where Regent Morton had a mansion and many wealth Gentlemen and Ladies lived. Other significant history about Black Friars Wynd “Cleanse the Causeway” when the Hamilton’s and Douglas’s battled and the Earl of Bothwell and Sir William Stewart who Bothwell killed in Black friars Wynd. The Catholic Chapel which moved from Black friars Wynd in 1813 is now St Mary’s Cathedral at Broughton Street. Blackfriars Wynd was the centre of Edinburgh Nobility with Lords, Earls, Dukes, Bishops, Lady’s and Royals all at one time residing in the Wynd. There was a Palace and the first printing press in Scotland which printed the first book in 1508. Blackfriars Wynd to the east was demolished (circa 1840) due to the improvement Act and rebuilt, where the west side was left and the buildings between Cants Close and Dickson’s were mostly demolished and new builds were erected. The United Industrial School opened in 1847 to give all children both boys and girls, protestant and catholic an instruction in Craft work tailoring, carpentry, Leather work etc. and Knitting and housework. United Presbyterian Church The church building was specifically built and opened in 1871 and used by the congregation at Mary's Chapel on the High Street since 1860. Regent Morton’s Mansion Blackfriar's Street Regent Morton’s Mansion house in Blackfriars Wynd (now Street) was the town house of Regent Morton, James Douglas 4th Earl of Morton who was born circa 1525. James Douglas was the last regent of Scotland. He was executed on the 2nd of June 1581. His execution took place at the foot of the Canongate outside the Palace of Holyrood House on the “maiden”. The guillotine brought from England by himself as he had been impressed when watching how it was so efficient. James Douglas took an active part the abdication of Mary Queen of Scots.in 1567. He was executed for being part of the killing of Lord Darnley Mary Queen of Scots Husband. New Skinner’s Close Cross House, was originally built in 1643 as the Skinner's Hall for the Incorporated Trade of Skinners in Edinburgh. The Skinner's trade body since 1451 and received its charter in 1474. Regulators of the ancient craft of tanning skins, and making gloves, parchment, and leather goods. The United Industrial School was started in Blackfriars Wynd, Edinburgh, in a seventeenth-century building known as Skinner's Hall Edinburgh Mint known as Coinyie House. The Coinyie House Mint was situated off South Gray's Close, near the Cowgate in Edinburgh's Old Town. Name Origin: "Coinyie" is an old Scots term for "coin," hence the name "Coinyie House" Scottish Mint from 1574 until the Union with England in 1707, The mint buildings were demolished 1877, and the site was redeveloped into the Coinyie House Close garden. Lodge of Journeymen Blackfriar's Street The Lodge of Journeymen Masons has worked as a legal lodge since 1715 but the Grand Lodge of Scotland states the true date of formation was 1707. The Lodge of Journeymen Masons is unique due to the fact it may be the only lodge in the world which is allowed to charge fees and confer degrees but does not have the required charter from a Grand Lodge. The Journeymen lodge moved to 63 Blackfriars Street, EH1 1NB on the 8th August 1871. Above the door can be seen a stone tablet with insignia and inscriptions. AND CONVENER OF THE TRADES Cardinal David Beaton Palace At the south west corner of Blackfriars Wynd and the boundary of the Cowgate stood the Archbishops Palace at the foot of Toddrick’s Wynd. Built in an L shape with a Porte-cochere giving access to a courtyard at the back. James (Bethune) Beaton lived here. The next resident was David Beaton nephew of James the Archbishop. The next to be resident was the High School of Edinburgh (Grammar Skule) prior to the new school building being completed where Blackfriars Monastery once stood. In February 1567 Mary Queen of Scots with her court went to the Cardinals Palace, where she had super before returning to Holyrood. This was the night Bothwell and accomplices made their way down Toddrick’s Wynd to Kirk o Field. The night Lord Darnley was murdered at Kirk o Field. The Palace and grounds were divided into lots and occupied by mostly poor Irish immigrants. Cardinal David Beaton Plaque David Beaton was born in 1494 and died in 1546. On 20 December 1539 David Beaton was made a Cardinal by Pope Paul III. Cardinal Beaton became a regent for Mary Queen of Scots and appointed himself the Chancellor of Scotland in 1543. He was disliked by most but was in favour with the royals of both France and Britain. He had many mistresses and 20 illegitimate children. He was arrested for fraud and the cause of the rough wooing, Henry the VIII invasion of Scotland. Calender House Calender House was the first block of dwelling houses 11, 13, 15 Blackfriars Street built by the Blackfriars Building Association to provide accommodation for the "industrial classes" following the City Improvement Act of 1867. Formerly known as Blackfriars Wynd, the E side was demolished in 1867 under the Improvement Act, the roadway widened and subsequently renamed Blackfriars Street. Blackfriars Building Association, composed of 84 Irish working men, in 1871. First Printing Press Blackfriar’s Street (Wynd) This plaque donates the place where the first printing of a book in Scotland was. The printers Walter Chepman and Andrew Myllar printed the first book in 1508 after being granted a licence by King (James IV) a year earlier. The printers stood in the Cowgate at the foot of Blackfriars Street near to Cardinal Beaton’s House. Toddrick’s Wynd High Street Royal Mile Edinburgh Toddrick’s (Todrig’s) Wynd once belonged to Archibald Todrig a Bailie of Edinburgh who was attacked in his home in the Wynd in 1500 by two men with swords. They were caught and taken to the Tolbooth and their hands were chopped off as a punishment. Toddrick’s Wynd was also where Bothwell and his cohorts ascended to Blackfriars Monastery on 9th Feb 1567 to blow up the provost’s house in Kirk O Fields. Thomas Aitchison lived here (the master of the mint). A grand Banquet was held in 1590 for the Ambassador and nobles of Denmark. The world’s first museum to be dedicated solely to the history of childhood was opened in 1955. The museum of Childhood contains five galleries with toys and games, both contemporary and antique, from around the world. Hyndford’s Close Royal Mile High Street Edinburgh Hyndford’s Close the entrance to the town residence of the Earls of Selkirk. The first Earl of Selkirk William Alexander colonised Nova Scotia in 1630. Hyndford’s Close was later to be occupied by Dr Daniel Rutherford a chemist and Botanist who discovered Nitrogen Gas in 1772. Dr Rutherford was Sir Walter Scott’s uncle, his sister being Walter’s mother. The close was named after the Carmichael’s of Hyndford. The New Palace Picture House The New Palace Picture House opened in 1929; and finally closed in September 1956. Tweeddale Court & Close High Street Royal Mile Edinburgh Tweeddale Court built in 1576 by the Earl of Lothian for his daughter Lady Yester and she passed it on to the 9th Earl of Yester her grandson the second Earl of Tweeddale who became the Marquis of Tweeddale Lord High Commissioner of Scotland which was bestowed upon him by William III. The Last Tweeddale to live here died in 1762 and the mansion house became the British Linen company. The British Linen Company occupied Tweeddale Court in 1791 till 1807. A grizzly murder also took place in Tweeddale Court in 1806, when William Begbie a porter of the British Linen Company was stabbed through the heart and robbed of thousands of bank notes he was carrying from a branch at the top of Leith. A major amount of notes were later recovered but the murderer was never caught. It is suspected that the murderer was later caught for another bank robbery of a similar description in Glasgow, but it was never proven. The thief was tried for the Glasgow robbery and found guilty, imprisoned and later died in Old Calton Jail in Regent Road. When the British Linen Company moved to St Andrew Square, Oliver and Boyd printers and publishers moved into the mansion house. A remaining section of the King's Wall, built by James II in the 1450s is visible on right side of the lane, also a shell fountain can be seen in a small courtyard. THE FEIR OF THE LORD PRESERVITH THE LYFE World’s End Close High Street Royal Mile Edinburgh World’s End Close previously Sir John Stanfield’s Close, Sir John Stanfield was supposedly murdered by his son who was then sentenced to hang at the market cross in Feb 1688 but due to the rope slipping he was finally chopped up and his head was displayed in Haddington his body in Leith and his tongue was cut out and hand chopped of for his crimes against his father. Known as World’s End Close as this was the last building inside the city wall which many people had never been past. St Mary (Wynd) Street Edinburgh St Mary’s Wynd demolished and No 2 St Mary Street was the first house to be built under the Improvement Act of 1867 and a wall tablet was placed above the door and unveiled by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh the right honourable William Chambers a publisher, politician and brother of Robert Chambers Author and publisher were both influential in Edinburgh’s History. With further renovation in 1985. St Mary’s Wynd was built on an old Roman road and was named after the Cistercian nuns of St Mary and a chapel and hospital dedicated to St Mary both built on the west side of the Wynd. The Mary’s Wynd was first mentioned circa 1340 when men of Edinburgh walked up Mary’s Wynd after returning from battle. This was the main route out of Edinburgh to the South. A Wynd changed its name to street when widened to allow carts to use it. St Mary's Port stood at the foot of the Pleasance part of the city defences and old city wall. Boyd’s Entry St Mary's Street Boyd’s Entry is where the first passenger coaches arrived from London. This is where the stables and buildings to house the coaches stood at the foot of Gullan’s Close next to the White Horse Inn (previously Boyd’s Inn), at the head of the Canongate. The Flodden wall once stood on the west side of the Street prior to the present housing. The wealthy of Edinburgh would leave provision in their wills to have a Hospital Built, in 1650 George Heriot bequeathed a sum of money for a hospital to be built for the poor fatherless children of Edinburgh. George Heriot was the first others that followed were, George Watson who built a Hospital directly across from Heriot’s 1741. William Fettes had a (Hospital) school built on his land at Comely Bank in 1870, The Merchant Maiden Hospital (Mary Erskine’s) started in the cowgate in 1659, John Watson built a hospital at Ravelston 1762. Link Edinburgh City Wall Cameo Picture House Tollcross Edinburgh The Cameo picture house opened in 1914 as the Kings Cinema The picture house was the first in Scotland to have a mirrored screen. With over 600 seats and an orchestral as there were only silent movies until 1930 the picture house was fitted with sound. By 1949 the picture house was requiring modernising and after refurbishment it change its name to what it is today The Cameo. In 1985 it became a multiplex with 3 screens and the main screen was restored to its original decor. Kings Theatre Tollcross Edinburgh The King's Theatre Edinburgh opened on the 8th December 1906 known as “The Grand Old Lady of Leven Street” Andrew Carnegie then one of the wealthiest men in the world (born in Dunfermline Fife living in America) laid the foundation stone which can still be seen today. Harry Lauder a Portobello entertainer and to become the highest paid performer in his time performed on stage at the Kings Theatre on many occasions and a memorial plaque to him is in the theatre. Another name that worked here as a young man, was a local lad Sean Connery who went on to become known around the world as James Bond and the rest is history. Sadly he died at the age of 90 in 2020. The King's Theatre is a place in Edinburgh for the Pantomime at Christmas and many productions throughout the year. Barclay Church Tollcross Edinburgh In 1858 a Miss Mary Barclay of 7 Carlton Terrace died, leaving over £10,000 for the erection of a Free Church. The Church was built circa 1863 and named after Miss Barclay and the streets around the church also took their names from Miss Barclay. The first service took place in the new Barclay Church in December of 1864. The First minister of the new Barclay Church was James Hood Wilson who remained until his death in 1906. In the church there is a bible in a glass case and its history is; The Bible is known as the ‘Vinegar Bible’ because of the misprint referring to the Parable of the Vineyard as the Parable of the Vinegar.
