Lawnmarket Attractions Edinburgh (South Side) Johnston’s Close Lawnmarket Edinburgh Johnston’s Close Lawnmarket Edinburgh is the first tenement after the west Bow on the south side of the Lawnmarket in the Royal Mile before Riddle’s Land and has no visible name. However, the Land where a tenement was built was owned by Sir Patrick Johnston Lord provost and knight of the realm in 1700 and a member of parliament for the city in 1700 to 1710. A Close would be named after the owner. Also other names connected with the first Close of the Lawnmarket are Johnston Glover and Edward Johnston junior. The close is now a private residence used for short term lets. Riddle’s Close Riddle's Court Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh Riddle’s (Riddell) Close and Court was originally Built on land owned by George Riddell where the name originates from. The Fishers then sold it to Patrick Maule of the Panmure Family in turn sold it to George McMorran. Then Baillie John McMorran built a house on the land for himself in 1590. He was one of the wealthiest residents of Edinburgh at that time. Inside you can see the different interiors from the 16th – 19th centuries. The story of the building can be seen in the painted ceilings by Patrick Geddes. See where the banquet was held when King James the sixth stayed here with his Queen. It now is home to The Patrick Geddes Centre, Riddle’s Court, 322 Lawnmarket, Edinburgh EH1 2PG and the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust. It was later merged with the National Library of Scotland in 1974. This was part of Fisher’s Land the building built for Thomas Fisher a merchant and first Chamberlain of Edinburgh in 1699. Fisher’s Close Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh Fisher’s Close named from Fisher’s Land owned by Thomas Fisher built a tenement on the land previously known as Hamilton’s Close which Cant’s Land was at the foot of the close Cant was the previous Land owner prior to Fisher. Brodie’s Close Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh William (Deacon) Brodie (28 September 1741 – 1 October 1788), more commonly known as Deacon Brodie lived in Brodie’s Close in the Lawnmarket Edinburgh, where he also had his workshop. William Brodie was a Scottish cabinet maker and Deacon of trades (This is where the name Deacon came from). By day, William Brodie was a respectable tradesman, a Deacon and a member of the Edinburgh Town Council. When evening came he used his skills as a burglar. The money from his crimes was used to maintain his second life, including five children, two mistresses and a gambling habit. He was also a member of the Edinburgh Cape Club founded in the 1700s. The main meeting place was the Isle of Man Arms in Craig’s Close in the Old Town of Edinburgh. A meeting place for the wealthy and nobility where all manner of frivolities would take place. When Deacon Brodie was eventually caught for trying to rob the Royal Mint, he was arrested and sentenced to hang. In 1788 he was taken to the Edinburgh Tolbooth (jail) and hanged by the neck. The Tolbooth is no longer there but is marked with brass cobbles and the Heart of Midlothian. Deacon Brodie’s life inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write the strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. William Brodie designed and erected the gallows in the High Street and was also the first to hang on them. The Gallows are marked with a plaque and cobbles at the corner of George IV Bridge across from David Hume’s Statue. Deacon Brodie’s Grave is in the Apse Church in Chapel Street. Buccleuch Parish Church The Church that stands in Chapel Street at the junction of the Cross Causeway was originally called the Chapel of Ease as St Cuthbert’s in Lothian Road had become too small for its congregation. The congregation\ of St Cuthbert’s had the Chapel of Ease built in 1754 and it opened its door in 1756. The most significant factor is the graveyard as there are a number of important people of the period buried in the graveyard here. Charles Darwin’s uncle of the same name, William Deacon Brodie, (master craftsman and robber), Dr Andrew Duncan (pioneer into mental health) and Dr Thomas Blacklock a minister of the church in a Borders Town was better known as “The Blind Poet”. Due to illness as a baby he lost his sight before he turned 1 year. He lived on the corner of Chapel Street and West Nicholson Street now a public house named (The Blind Poet) where on the walls can be seen many poems written by Dr Thomas Blacklock, The Blind Poet. Buchanan’s Close Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh Buchanan’s Close named from Buchanan’s Land, previously a tenement of the Abbot of Cambuskenneth which burned down in the fire of 1725. Also could have been Walter Willie’s Close. Now a restaurant entrance for the Hotel on George IV Bridge. Lawnmarket Gallows Last Public Execution Plaque and Cobbles The brass plaque on the Wall of the Lothian Chambers Building and brass cobbles at the side of the walkway show the place where the gallows stood and the site of the last man to hang in public in Edinburgh. The site of the gallows is marked by the three brass plates set at the edge of the pavement. The first public execution from the same gallows was on 1 October 1788, a William (Deacon) Brodie. The gallows William (Deacon) Brodie had designed and funded and built the year before. The inscription on the brass plaque reads; Site of the Last Public Execution in Edinburgh. The site of the gallows is marked by the three brass plates set at the edge of the pavement in front of this notice. George Bryce, the Ratho Murderer, was executed here on 21st June 1864, the Last public execution in Edinburgh. Burns Tavern by George Cattermole Burns Tavern previously Dowie’s Tavern in Libberton's Wynd ran from the Lawnmarket to the Cowgate on the eastern side of the George IV Bridge. Libberton’s Wynd was knocked down with the building of George IV Bridge in 1834. Johnnie Dowie was the owner of Dowie’s Tavern until his death in 1817. The new owner changed the name to Burns Tavern a favourite Howff of Robert Burns when he lived across the road in 1786. Also many other notable gents of the time frequented the Tavern. They included Henry Raeburn, Robert Fergusson and Thomas Campbell, David Hume, Christopher North, David Herd and Archibald Younger all now famous names of Edinburgh. Burns Tavern Lawnmarket Wellhead Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh The Lawnmarket Wellhead can be found up from St Giles Cathedral at the junction of the Lawnmarket and the High Street. This is where the residents of the Lawnmarket would collect their fresh drinking water every day. The water was piped from the reservoir at Castlehill to cisterns / wellheads to give the people fresh water. Lawnmarket Nothside Lawnmarket Attractions Edinburgh (North Side) Milne’s Court Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh Milne’s (Mylne’s) Court Was the first open court of its type in Edinburgh, it was built in 1692 by Robert Milne master mason to the King. The buildings were renovated in 1914. The plaque at the entry to Milne’s Court reads; One of the first open squares in old Edinburgh was designed and built by Robert Milne in the late 17th century. The old building which formed the west side of the court was demolished in 1883. The north and south blocks were restored and the east range rebuilt by the university of Edinburgh between 1966 – 1970. This was made possible by generous friends of the university. James's Court Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh James’s Court 493 -495 Lawnmarket Edinburgh Named after the builder James Brownhill. James’s Court was built around 1725. The philosopher David Hume and James Boswell the lawyer and author lived here. The court was destroyed by fire and re-built in 1857. There are three entry’s to the Court the West Entry where Sir John Lauder (Lord Fountainhall lived, The East Entry which was previously named Jardine’s Close after George Jardine who live here and Mid Entry the main entrance to the Court where John Dickson of Hartree lived. James Court is a large area and has a stain Glass window worth seeing and a sculpture of a pigeon in a basket. James Court is also connected to Makars’ Court and the Writers’ Museum. Inscription on Lintel above stain glass window reads Stain Glass Window James Court Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh NISI DOMINUS FRUSTRA (ONLY THE LORD IN VAIN), with date 1860 and initials FC PH which stands for Free Church Presbytery Hall. The images in the glass are of, centre, King James VI, with Sir David Lindsay of the Mount and George Buchanan to his right and left. This window is part of the College and Offices of the Free Church of Scotland in North Bank Street Edinburgh. Gladstone’s Land Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh Gladstone’s Land Lawnmarket Edinburgh is on the north side of the Lawnmarket section of the Royal Mile. Purchased in 1631 by a Thomas Gladstane and left to his son William Gladstane surgeon to Colonel Lauder’s regiment. The Plaque above Lady Stair’s Close entrance reads; In a house on the east side of the close Robert Burns Lived during his first visit to Edinburgh 1786. 453 – 463 Lawnmarket Lawnmarket 453 – 463 was built in 1892 5 storeys to front with shops below and 6 to back was part of Geddes’s idea of restoration through modernisation of Lady Stairs and Wardrop’s Court. Lady Stair's House Lawnmarket Edinburgh The Writers' Museum is housed in Lady Stair’s House which was built in 1662. This was originally called Lady Gray’s Close the widow of Lord William Gray who was the wealthiest merchant of the time. After his death the house was sold to the Earl of Stair and the house was renamed after his wife on his death Lady Stair’s House. The House was purchased in 1895 by the Earl of Roseberry and he had it restored in 1897. He later in 1907 gifted it to the City for use as a municipal museum. Makers Court Slabs The Makars' slabs Blackie House Wardrop’s Court Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh Blackie House Lawnmarket Wardrop’s Court Royal Mile Edinburgh was named after the resident James Stuart Blackie. The ornate window surrounds of his house can be seen in North bank Street on the second floor. Look up above the shops on North Bank Street to see the window with the memorial to James Blackie a University of Edinburgh Professor in Greek and German. He left 250, 19th century Greek books to the University Library which are still being used by students today. He was born in Aberdeen and studied in Germany and Italy. He was the inspiration behind the founding of the Celtic chair of the University of Edinburgh. Wardrop’s Court Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh Lawnmarket Wardrop’s Court Royal Mile Edinburgh is the last court before crossing Bank Street to the final building in the Lawnmarket, Edinburgh High Court. Wardrop Court was previously Middle Baxter’s Close and the John Wardrop built a tenement in the court and called it Wardrop’s Court with the entrance archway Wardrop’s Close. The entrance is noticeable by the Dragons on each corner. The Dragons were sculpted by J S Gibson circa 1890. Blue Dragons Wardrop’s Court Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh The plaque on the right hand side of the court entrance reads; The pair of dragons facing the Lawnmarket were carved by J S Gibson in the 1890s. The pair at the rear were carved in 1911 by Arthur Geddes when he was 16 under the supervision of Alec Miller, a craftsman closely associated with the arts and crafts movement. Arthur was the son of Patrick Geddes, the influential biologist and town Planner who dedicated much of this life to the regeneration of the Old Town. The dragons were restored in 2012 by the City of Edinburgh Council and Edinburgh World Heritage, with support from the Brownlee Old Town Trust and the Geddes family. David Hume Statue Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh David Hume was born on the 26 April 1711 in Edinburgh, he was a Scottish philosopher and historian. He was one of the most important figures in the history of Western philosophy and the Scottish Enlightenment. David Hume attended the University of Edinburgh. Hume achieved great literary fame as a historian when publishing, "The History of England". David Hume lived from 1771 until his death in 1776 at his home in St. Andrew Square in Edinburgh's New Town. The actual site of his home was 21 St David Street. There are two thoughts on how St David’s Street was named firstly after King David I son of Malcolm III and the other after David Hume. David Hume wrote many books including, A Treatise of Human Nature, The Life of David Hume and many more. Barnton at one time was outside of Edinburgh and became a commuting village with Cramond. Now it is a area of mainly large detached houses. Not far from Cammo on the other side of the main route Barnton attractons, the oldest established Golf Club in the world. Barnton and Cammo Edinburgh Barnton Edinburgh The Royal Burgess Golfing Society (The Burghers) 1735 The Royal Burgess Golfing Society near Cramond the Oldest Golf Club in the world. There were six golf clubs that played their golf at Bruntsfield Links of which The Burghers were one, they were the first to be instituted in 1735 the club house the Old Golf Tavern was used by all clubs. circa 1780 the society became known as the Edinburgh Burgess Golfing Society and by Royal Edict dated 30 September 1929 His Majesty King George V commanded that the name be changed to The Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh. The Club moved to its present home at Barnton in 1895 designed by a Musselburgh Golfer Willie Park Jnr who won the open Championship in 1887 and 1889. His family were golfers, his father Willie Park Snr won the first Open in 1860 and also in 1863, 1866 and 1875 and his uncle Mungo Park won in 1874 The Royal Burgess Golfing Society Instituted in 1735. The Plaque shows golfers of the original Burghers at Bruntsfield Links where they first played for a silver putter. The Burghers now The Royal Burgess is the oldest golf club in the world. The first Golf Club House being Ye Old Golf Tavern. Barnton Quarry (The Secret Bunker) Presently under construction to be a visitor site The Secret Bunker can be found just off Clermiston Road North there is a small car park at the side of the road and it is a short walk to the Bunker. This was one of the largest underground military installations in the UK. The purpose of the bunker was to house a radar detection unit and Royal Air Force fighter response command protecting the UK from Russian long range nuclear threats. This facility was a national secret installation for many years. There were 3 other similar sites in the UK Kelvedon Hatch (London), Shipton (Yorkshire), Bawburgh (Norfolk) These 4 sites were the top of the Radar command. Cammo Cammo Edinburgh Cammo House Ruins Nature Reserve Edinburgh Cammo House was built in the early part of the 1690s by a John Menzies a wealthy businessman and was later sold to Sir John Clerk in 1710. Sir John Clerk with an interest in landscaping set out the gardens of Cammo house over the next several years. The house is now a ruin and the lands are now open to the public. Things to look for are the ruin of Cammo House, the said to be oldest and largest Ash tree in Edinburgh, the East Lodge, Cammo Tower, The Cammo Stane and if very lucky the Ghosts of Cammo House. Cammo Ancient Tree Planted 1854 Cammo Nature Reserve Cammo Stables Cammo Standing Stone Cammo Canal Cammo Water Tower Cammo water tower was built in the 1870’s and supplied Cammo house with water. The water was run by a pump by a windmill that was on top of the Tower which is no longer there. Cramond

Charlotte Square Edinburgh New Town Attractions Charlotte Square Edinburgh Charlotte Square was part of the designs of the new town of 1759, originally called George Square after King George III and renamed Charlotte Square after his wife, as there was a George Square already in existence in Edinburgh. Also in Charlotte Square is Bute House, the First Minister’s residence, the Georgian House at 16 South Charlotte Street where Alexander Graham Bell lived, West Register House and the memorial in Charlotte Square Garden is of Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria. Charlotte Square New Town Housing A typical terrace of houses built in the new town in the early 1800s on the north side of Charlotte Square. The row of terraced houses in Charlotte Square was the city’s most affluent area, with boot scrappers and torch snuffers at the doors the must haves before electric and door mats. Albert Prince Consort Charlotte Square Gardens Edinburgh Albert Francis Charles Augustus Emmanuel of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was born on 26 August 1819 in Bavaria. He married Queen Victoria in 1840. Albert and Victoria's were cousin. In 1857 he was given the title of Prince Consort. Albert was behind the great exibition of 1851. Albert and Victoria had 9 children and when Albert died in 1861 at the age of 42. His wife Queen Victoria went into morning on his death, which lasted until her death in 1901. The monument in the centre of Charlotte Square is a memorial to Albert Prince Consort. A bronze statue of Prince Albert on a horse. It was opened in 1876 by his late wife Queen Victoria. Earl Douglas Haig Charlotte Square Edinburgh Douglas Haig son of the Haig Whisky family and became a Field Marshal in the British Army in the First World War. He also served in India and in Africa in the Boer War. He led his forces in the Battle of the Somme and was nicknamed, The Butcher of the Somme due to his tactics. He died in London in 1928 and was buried in Dryburgh Abbey in the Borders. (No.24) Charlotte Square Edinburgh. Lord Joseph Listor Lord Lister lived with his father- in- law James Syme at No. 9 Charlotte Square for 7 years 1870-1877. Born in Upton Essex he introduced carbolic acid to sterilise surgical instruments. Carbolic Acid is now known as Phenol. Many famous people lived or were born in Charlotte Square. Sir William Fettes founder of Fettes College lived at No.14 and Field Marshal Earl Douglas Haig, World War I Officer, nicknamed, the butcher of the Somme was born at No.24. WEST REGISTER HOUSE CHARLOTTE SQUARE EDINBURGH West Register House West Register House was built as part of the new town plans, having a Square at each end of the plans with a church looking over a garden square. This did not go ahead in St Andrew Square as there was no land space available to build a Church to mirror the one in Charlotte Square. The church of St George was built in Charlotte Square between 1811 and finished in 1813 and opened in 1814 which was to hold up to 1500 worshipers with a dome said to replicate the dome of st Paul's in London. In 1964 St George's church united with St Andrew's Church in George Street and later that year the National registers took over the building and it became West Register House. Bute House The First Ministers Residence Charlotte Square Edinburgh No. 6 Charlotte Square has been the official residence of the First Minister of Scotland since 1999. The First Minister is the equivalent to the UK Prime Minister, if Scotland were to become independent. The house is similar to next door at No.7 and it is believed to be one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in Edinburgh. Georgian House Alexander Graham Bell Charlotte Square Edinburgh Alexander Graham Bell was a scientist, inventor, engineer and innovator. He was the inventor of the first practical telephone. He was born in Edinburgh on 3 March 1847 and his home was at 16 South Charlotte Street. The door is now 14 but above on the stone work 16 can still be seen. There is now a commemorative wall tablet beside the door marking where he was born. He was educated at University of Edinburgh and University College London. He died of diabetes on 2 August 1922 (aged 75) in Nova Scotia, Canada. Alexander Graham Bell was awarded the first US patent for the telephone in 1876. Bell considered his most famous invention an intrusion on his real work as a scientist and refused to have a telephone in his study. Lord Henry Cockburn Charlotte Square Edinburgh Lord Henry Cockburn Lived at 14 Charlotte Square Edinburgh from 1813 -1848 Henry Cockburn was a Scottish lawyer and a Judge. He also was a regular writer for the Edinburgh magazine the Edinburgh Review which was founded in 1802. Lord Henry Cockburn’s acquaintances were Lord Francis Jeffrey, Sir Walter Scott al members of the Speculative Society founded in 1764 and still meets at the Old College of Edinburgh University. Professor Sir Robert Philip Charlotte Square Edinburgh Professor Sir Robert Philip opened the world's first tuberculosis dispensary in Bank Street Edinburgh in 1887. Sir (Dr) (Professor) Robert Philip pioneered the management, prevention, detection and treatment of tuberculosis (TB). On the wall in Bank Street a blue Plaque reads “Near this place in 1887, Dr Robert Philip founded a tuberculosis dispensary, the first clinic in the world dedicated to fighting a disease of which he foretold Man’s eventual mastery. That vision has brought hope to many lands.” Tuberculosis (TB) was the biggest killer in the UK by the middle of the 19th century and due to Sir Robert Philip it has been almost eradicated. Sir Robert Philip died at home in 9 Palmerston Road, in the Grange area of Edinburgh, on the 25th January 1939. Catherine Sinclair Memorial Replica Scott Monument Catherine Sinclair was born in Edinburgh on 17 April 1800. Her father was Sir John Sinclair, a well known politician and the first organiser of the The Statistical Account of Scotland’. Catherine Sinclair was home educated and published her first book in 1832 (‘Charlie Seymour, or, The good aunt and the bad aunt’). Catherine Sinclair most popular book was for children and was sold worldwide Holiday House published in 1839. A stone bridge replaced the original wooden structure circa 1460. The Devorgilla Bridge named after Lady Devorgilla of Galloway niece of William the Lion. Her son was to become king (John Baliol) in 1292. She had many structures and buildings built, one of which is the Sweetheart Abbey circa 1274 the last Cistercian abbey to be founded in Scotland. Lady Devorgilla was one of the most influential women of her age in Britain born 1210 and died 1290. Buried in Sweetheart Abbey near Dumfries. Old Bridge House The House at the end of Devorgilla Bridge also known as "The House at Bridgend" was built in 1660 and is the oldest remaining house in Dumfries. The House has had many uses a meeting hall, house, tavern and now a museum with many interesting artefacts. Savings Bank Founder Dr Henry Duncan was the founder of the Savings Bank Movement in 1810. Born in 1774 he moved to Ruthwell in 1799 as the Parish minister. The first Savings bank was opened eleven years later in the present cottage were the museum is situated in Ruthwell, Dumfries, DG1 4NN today. The savings bank he opened was the forerunner for the TSB and all savings bank worldwide. Robert Burns Dumfries Robert Burns first moved to Dumfries when he came on the visit in 1787. Dumfries Town Council made him an honorary Burgess. In May 1793 the family moved to a better quality house in Mill Street now called Burns Street where he wrote songs which included “my love is like a red, red Rose” and “man’s a man for all that” His days in Dumfries were spent as an excise man usually dressed in a decent suit of dark clothes. He had a distinguished head with large dark brown eyes and a high forehead, his features were hard and he had a slight stoop. At nearly 5 foot 10 ins (1.8 m) in height he was well known around town. Robert Burns died in Dumfries in his house in Mill Street on the 21st July 1796. Robert Burns and family lived in Bank Street Dumfries. He was employed to collect taxes, The garden across from the house has The poem Red Red Rose on a stone plinth and there are 2 murals on the wall. Jean Armour and Son Statue Robert Burns Statue Dumfries The Robert Burns statue erected to his memory in Dumfries was unveiled by Lord Roseberry on the 6th April 1882 and is sculptured from Sicilian Marble. Jean Armour was born in Mauchline Ayrshire on (25 February 1765 and died 26 March 1834). She married Robert Burns on 5 August 1788. She was known as the "Belle of Mauchline". They moved to Ellisland Farm where they stayed for 5 years until 1791 when they moved to Dumfries, where they stayed till their deaths. Greyfriars Church Dumfries On what was the site of Dumfries Castle which was destroyed circa 1320 the First Church was built in 1772. The present Greyfriars Church was built in 1868, which overlooks the site of the famous murder in the original Church of the Greyfriars, committed by Robert the Bruce over the crown of Scotland, John III Comyn Lord of Badenoch in 1306. This was the beginning of the war of Independence that finish at Bannockburn. The plaque on the site of where the murder took place is at the bus stop across from the Robert Burns Statue. On one side of the pedestal is a device representing a female figure leaning on an urn and on another side of the same is the following inscription Plaque inscription This Column Sacred to the memory of Charles Duke of Queensberry and Dover Was erected by The County of Dumfries. As a monument of their veneration for the character of that illustrious nobleman: Whose exalted virtues rendered him the ornament of society and whose numerous acts of public beneficence and private charity endeared him to his country Ob. 22nd Oct. 1778; Aet. 80". Midsteeple Dumfries The town-house or Midsteeple, which was built in 1705-8. There are two carved panels. One is of the royal arms of Scotland, with unicorn supporters. The lower panel shows the winged figure of St Michael, patron of the burgh. These carvings are circa 1650. There were a further 2 built into the wall in 1909 which were from the old prison circa 1580. One has the initials H R (Herbert Raining) and R MK (Robert MacKinnell) with a pair of shackles and a bow and arrow and the word BAILLIES, who held that office in the 1570s. The other shows a shield bearing a chevron between three fleurs-de-lys, with the town 's motto A LORJ BURNE. 1830, and a cast-iron distance-plate of 1827. Last Hanging in Scotland Buccleuch Street Dumfries The last man to be publicly hanged in Scotland, was Robert Smith on Buccleuch Street Dumfries 12 May 1868. His death mask is on public display in Dumfries Museum. Mary Timney (27-year-old) on the 29 April 1862, also at Buccleuch Street in Dumfries was the last woman to be publicly executed in Scotland. June 2005 Robert Burns Rock Dumfries Robert Burns Rock was unveiled by HRH Princess Royal on 9th July 2013 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II Ca' the Yowes Robert Burns Memorial Stone ("Drive the ewes to the hills") is a Scottish folk song by Robert Burns from 1794 St Michael’s and South Parish Church St. Michaels Church in 1746. This is where Robert Burns was buried and now is where his Mausoleum can be seen. The monument inside the mausoleum is the statue of the Muse Coila (Coila was the muse of Robert Burns, who he created as a poetic device for his poem The Vision) She floats above Burns with his plough. Robert Burns and his to sons were reinterred (1817) under the floor of the new mausoleum. His wife Jean Armour is also buried in the mausoleum ( March 1834) , and his son Robert, (May 1857). Robert Burns Original Grave Camera Obscura and Museum The highest point in the town of Dumfries Corbelly Hill was once in a separate area known as Maxwelltown. Where a large windmill stood, built in 1798. A Camera Obscura was installed in 1836 and opened 2 years later. This is said to be the oldest working Camera Obscura in the world. The museum was built in 1862 using the windmill tower as the Camera Obscura. The museum was attached to the tower and houses many interesting exhibits including a bicycle made in 1839 by Kirkpatrick Macmillan the inventor of the rear-wheel driven bicycle. Also a cast of the original skull of Robert the Bruce from Dunfermline Abbey. Outside the museum is a cannon and a Open octagonal painted stone Tuscan temple to John Sinclair with statues of Old Mortality And His Pony. Dr John Sinclair On 25th October 1840, Dr. John Sinclair was thrown from a horse drawn gig between Southampton and Titchfield and died of his injuries. He was buried in the Portsmouth Garrison Chapel graveyard. The previous day he had won a raffle for a statue of Old Mortality and his Pony, based on the characters in the Sir Walter Scott novel of the same name. His parents erected the statue as a memorial, which can still be seen as part of Dumfries Museum in Scotland Russian cannon captured during the Crimean War circa 1855. James Edward Tait VC MC James Edward Tait (1888-1918) was born on 27th May 1888 in Maxwelltown (Dumfries) James Tait received the Military Cross for his conduct on 9th April 1917, the day the Canadian Corps attacked and captured Vimy Ridge in France. Lieutenant James Tait earned the Victoria Cross posthumously for his actions while serving with the 78th Infantry Battalion, CEF during the first four days of the Battle of Amiens, 8th to 11th August 1918. Robert Burns Ellisland Farm Robert Burns and family moved to the house in Dumfries in 1793 from the farm they leased after leaving Edinburgh 5 years before. He joined the Russian navy in 1788 and also attacked Leith at the head of a French Force flying the American flag . In 1777 sailing “ the Ranger “ his capture of the British vessel “Drake “ off the Irish Coast is America’s first recorded naval triumph . He was honoured by the US congress and Ennobled by the French before dying in Paris aged 45 and was later re-interred in Annapolis, Maryland , USA. Fife Attractions Robert Burns Centre Burgh Church Norway House Dumfries Academy Lochfoot Fountain John Paul Jones Birthplace Museum John Paul Jones was a Revolutionary War hero known as the father of the U.S. Navy. Born in Arbigland Kirkcudbright Scotland in 6th July 1747, John Paul joined the British Merchant Marine at the age of 13 at the age of 27 he fled to America as he murdered a sailor in self-defence on the island of Tobago. Arriving in America he added Jones to his name to hide his identity. He joined the Continental Navy and became the scourge of the British Navy, when the Continental Navy disbanded in 1787 he joined the Russian Navy. He ended his life in France and died in Paris in 1792. His remains were eventually found in a disused cemetery in Paris and return to America. He lies at rest in a tomb inside the chapel of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. There has been 5 US naval war ships named after John Paul Jones the last being the USS John Paul Jones (DDG-53) built in 1991.

Cockburn Street Edinburgh New Town a winding street that joins Edinburgh's Royal Mile at the High Street to Waverley Bridge Edinburgh's main Rail Station. With shops, pubs, restaurants, cafes and accommodation. Cockburn Street Edinburgh (Lord Cockburn Street) Lord Cockburn Street was built as an access to the Waverley Bridge Road at Waverley Rail Station from the High Street near to the Tron Kirk. The Plans for Cockburn Street were submitted over a lengthy period circa 1850 and was finally completed in 1859. Lord Cockburn Street was named after Lord Cockburn who was one of the most respected Gentlemen of Edinburgh. He Died in 1854 and a Carved Stone of his Head and Shoulders are above No1-3 Cockburn Street now the Edinburgh Military Tattoo Offices. Lord Henry Cockburn The Edinburgh Military Tattoo Office was originally built as a hotel (The Cockburn hotel built circa 1862). The carving above door of a head is Lord Cockburn with gilt writing MacPherson on lintel. (Previous owner) Lord Cockburn was a conservationist and saved many important buildings in Edinburgh. The street is named after him. Lord Henry Cockburn died in 1854 at the age of 74. A conservationist the Cockburn Association which was established in 1875 was named after Lord Henry Cockburn. A statue of Lord Henry Cockburn stands in the north-east corner of Parliament Hall in the High Street Edinburgh. When Cockburn Street was built (circa 1859) it cut through many old closes, which evidence of can be seen in Old Fleshmarket Close where the smallest pub in Edinburgh can be found on the north side of the severed close.
