Craigmillar Castle Edinburgh Prestonfield #OUTLANDER FILM LOCATION Craigmillar Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Scotland. It has a central tower house which is surrounded by a courtyard wall and has a chapel and a do’cot. Craigmillar Castle was built in the late 14th century by the Preston family, Land owners of Craigmillar. Craigmillar Castle is best known for its association with Mary Queen of Scots. She used the castle as a place to rest after illness and after the birth of her son the future James I of England. Mary arrived at Craigmillar Castle on the 20th November 1566 and left on 7 December 1566. In November Bothwell met with nobles at Craigmillar Castle to discuss Lord Darnley. They came up with two options, divorce or assassination. They then consulted with Mary, she ruled out divorce, because it would make her son illegitimate. As for 'other means', she said that she wanted 'nothing against her honour'. The nobles saw this as her agreement to kill her husband and on leaving the nobles signed an agreement to murder Darnley. A pact known as the "Craigmillar Bond" was made, to be rid of her husband Lord Darnley. The garden pond shaped as the initial "P" can still be seen. It was Simon Prestons’ town House in Edinburgh that Mary Queen of Scots spent her last night before she was taken to Leven then on to England to spend the next 19 years in imprisonment before her execution. It was Elizabeth I the cousin of Mary Queen of Scots that had her executed. Prestonfield Edinburgh The area of Craigmillar in the east was purchased and added to the Barony of Priestfield owned by Sir James Dick. The first house was named Priestfield, as the monks had previously been the landowners. Priestfield House was burned to the ground in 1680 by anti-Catholic student protesters (the Dick's being Catholic) and as a consequence the Edinburgh council closed the University of Edinburgh until they could see improvement in the student’s behaviour. The reason for the targeting of Priestfield and Sir James Dick was he held the position of Provost of the University of Edinburgh. The Dick family lived in Prestonfield House for over 250 years. A new house was built by Sir William Bruce, king’s architect. At that time the house was renamed Prestonfield House. In the years to follow Prestonfield house greeted many famous guests that included Bonnie Prince Charlie, Samuel Jonson and James Boswell. Benjamín Franklin was entertained by the president of the Royal College of Physicians, Sir Alexander Dick, at his home, Prestonfield in 1759. The House still stands with many renovations and modernisation over the centuries it still stands, now a hotel and has been a popular venue for the celebrities for the last 50 years with guest such as Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, Sean Connery, Elton John, Catherine Zeta Jones, Oliver Reed and many more. EDINBURGH CASTLE E SPLANADE Edinburgh Castle Esplanade has many memorial plaques and a statues looking at Edinburgh Castle from the Esplanade to the left is the Royal Palace where the flag pole with flag ar situated.and above the main entrance at the drawbridge id the Half Moon Battery to the right is the Forewell Battery and Mills Mount. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade Garrison Shield and Motto Edinburgh Castle Esplanade is the area for four weeks of the year the world famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo his held. During the months of July and August is the main showcase of Edinburgh. This is when The Fringe Festival and Edinburgh International Festival takes place and tourists from around the world can be seen in their 100s of thousands. Looking around the Esplanade you can see memorials, statues and plaques to the regiments and heroes of the past battles. There is one obelisk, one statue, 3 plaques, 3 crosses, a wall fountain and the Ewart grave. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade Castle Drawbridge The drawbridge at the entrance to Edinburgh Castle spanning the moat which helped protect the Castle from intruders. On guard on either side of the drawbridge are statues, on the right is William Wallace and the left is Robert the Bruce when facing the castle. Above the gateway, can be seen the coat of arms and motto of the Regiment of Scotland, who were based at Edinburgh Castle until the amalgamation of the Scottish regiments in 2006. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade Robert the Bruce Statue King Robert the Bruce. On the left side facing the Edinburgh Castle drawbridge stands Robert I, known as Robert the Bruce, became King of Scots on 25 March 1306. At the Battle of Bannockburn in June 1314, he led a Scottish army and defeated the English army lead by Edward II. To confirm an independent Scottish monarchy in 1320 a letter was sent to Pope John XXII declaring that Robert the Bruce was their rightful monarch. This letter was the 'Declaration of Arbroath' and it asserted the antiquity of the Scottish people and their monarchy. In 1324 Robert the Bruce received papal recognition as king of an independent Scotland. Robert died on 7 June 1329. He was buried in Dunfermline Abbey and his heart is buried in Melrose Abbey. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade William Wallace Statue Sir William Wallace (Braveheart). On the right side facing the Edinburgh Castle drawbridge stands two mighty warriors. William Wallace was born circa 1270. At Stirling Bridge 1297 he defeated the English army. Around 1298 he was knighted and appointed 'guardian of the kingdom'. On the 22 July 1298, the Scottish army lead by Wallace battled the English arms of Edward I near Falkirk, the Scots were heavily defeated but Wallace escaped. Edward hated Wallace and put a price on his head. Wallace was finally captured on the 3 August 1305 in Robroyston, north of Glasgow and transported to London. He was charged and tried with treason, which he denied, saying he had never sworn allegiance to the English king. His execution was held on 23 August 1305, where he was hung, drawn and quartered. His head was placed on London Bridge, and his limbs displayed in Newcastle, Berwick, Stirling and Perth. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade Sir William Alexander Plaque First Baron of Nova Scotia In 1621, King James granted Sir William Alexander the land in North America between New England and Newfoundland, as Nova Scotia ("New Scotland"). To promote the settlement of Nova Scotia, the Baronetage of Nova Scotia was created in 1624. Scots Law, baronets had to "take sasine" by symbolically receiving the earth and stone of the land of which they were baronet. To make this possible, as Nova Scotia was so far away, the King declared that sasine could be taken either in Nova Scotia or, "at the Castle of Edinburgh as the most eminent and principal place of Scotland". Edinburgh Castle Esplanade The King’s Own Scottish Borderers Memorial On the 19th March 1689 David Leslie Earl of Leven gathered a regiment of soldiers within two hours to defend the City of Edinburgh. For Leven’s regiment’s gallantry in defending Edinburgh and later at the Battle of Killiecrankie with a resounding victory for the Jacobite’s lead by James VII of Scotland and II of England, the magistrates of Edinburgh gave the unique right of recruiting by the beat of the drum, marching through the Edinburgh streets with drums beating and flags flying and bayonets fixed. The regiment was later named The King’s Own Scottish Borderers. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade Field Marshal His Royal Highness Frederick Duke of York The Duke of York (1763-1827) was appointed Commander in Chief of the British Army in 1795. His parents King George III and his mother Queen Charlotte were instrumental in shaping Edinburgh’s New Town with streets named by and after them. King George III was the first King of Great Britain and Ireland. King George III King George III (George William Frederick) was born 4 June 1738 in London. He became king in October 1760 at 22. His wife was Charlotte and they had 16 children, 10 sons and 6 daughters and were married for 57 years. He died in January 1820 at 81. During his reign he had Edinburgh’s new town built and purchased Buckingham House in London in 1762 which later became Buckingham Palace. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade Scottish Horse Memorial Cross This is a memorial to the Scottish Horse Regiment who were killed during the South African War of 1901-2. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade The Runic Cross The Runic Cross was erected in 1862 for the memory of the officers, non-commissioned officers and private soldiers of the 78 highland regiment who died at the suppression of the First Relief of Lucknow in 1857 during the Indian Mutiny (1857-59). Eight men of the 78th Highland Regiment were awarded the Victoria Cross and the regiment also received the Victoria Cross during the campaign. The troubles started due to the bullets being covered with pig fat which they had to bite. Putting pork of any kind in their mouths is against the religious beliefs of Hindus and Muslims. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade 72nd Highlanders The Obelisk was erected in memory of the officers, Non-commissioned officers and men of the Duke of Albany's 72nd highlanders who died in the Afghan campaigns of 1878, 1879 and 1880. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade Ensign Ewart Memorial and Grave SERGEANT CHARLES EWART Battle of Waterloo 18th June 1815. In 1938 the actual remains of Ensign Ewart were re-interred on Edinburgh Castle’s Esplanade. (Pictured) battle date, the eagle standard of the French Army and memorial stone. Fountain Princess Louise Her Royal Highness, Marchioness of Lorne, 9th Duchess of Argyll and Queen Victoria’s daughter. She had many honours bestowed upon her. The 91st Argyllshire Regiment name changed in her honour to 91st (Princess Louise's Argyllshire Highlanders) Regiment of Foot. She had a strong connection with Canada and a province (Alberta), a mountain (Alberta) and villages of Caroline and Alberta named after her. The inscription on the memorial Drinking Fountain above the trough reads; THE PRINCESS LOUISE’S ARGYLLSHIRE HIGHLANDERS. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade Gordon Highlanders This memorial is to the officers and men of the Gordon Highlanders who lost their lives in the South African war from 1899 to 1902 in Natal, Transvaal, Cape Colony and The Orange Free State. The Gordon Highlanders was an army infantry regiment from 1881 until 1994. The regiment took its name from the Clan Gordon and recruited principally from Aberdeen and the North-East of Scotland. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade 78th Highlanders Memorial Celtic Cross The Celtic Cross was erected in memory of Colonel Kenneth Douglas Mackenzie a member of the 92nd Highlanders for forty-two years. Portobello Edinburgh The name Portobello comes from Portobello Hut, which was a hut built by a sailor called George Hamilton in 1742. He named it after a battle he fought in Panama in 1739, the Battle of Puerto Bello. PORTOBELLO BEACH Portobello was created as a burgh by Act of Parliament in 1833, and became a part of Edinburgh in 1896. It is a beach resort located three miles (5 km) to the east of the city centre of Edinburgh, with a promenade that stretches from Seafield on the outskirts of Leith to Joppa just outside Musselburgh. Portobello was at its peak as a resort in the late 19th century. Now Portobello Sailing and Rowing Club use the area for sailing kayaking and surfing. On the good summer days the beach is crowded with sun lovers and people out for a stroll along the promenade. Portobello grew from a small coastal village called Figgate (The estuary to the Figgate Burn still flows into the Forth) where smugglers and highwaymen would hideout. The name Portobello has been recorded in manuscripts as far back as 1739. PORTOBELLO POTTERIES A pottery factory has stood near the Figgate Burn in Portobello since 1770. These are the only surviving kilns of their kind in Scotland from a once thriving industry that goes back over 200 years. The pottery closed in 1972 and moved to a new factory in Crieff Perthshire. Hugh Miller Portobello High Street Edinburgh Hugh Miller born in 1802 became a stone mason but known as a geologist and palaeontologist and writer (The Old Red Sandstone and My Schools and Schoolmasters two of his publications) spent his last years in his house in Tower Street Portobello where he shot himself in 1856. His funeral was one of the largest Edinburgh had witnessed. He was the editor of a religious newspaper and a leading figure which led to the founding of the Free Church of Scotland. A great man and a true Scot. Plaque in High Street Royal Mile Edinburgh and Portobello High Street. There is a bust of Hugh Miller in the Hall of Heroes in the Wallace Monument, Stirling. SIR HARRY LAUDER Harry Lauder was born in the cottage 3 Bridge Street Portobello in 1870. Sir Harry Lauder was a world wide musical entertainer and three of his most famous songs were Roamin in the Gloamin, I Love a Lassie and Keep right on to the end of the road. Sir Harry Lauder was the highest paid entertainer of his time and the first UK artist to sell one million records. COADE PILLARS The pillars were originally in the garden of Argyle House Hope Lane Portobello. They are constructed from moulded blocks of Coade stone named after Eleanor Coade the inventor of the artificial stone which she called Litho di pyra (which is an ancient Greek word for stone twice fired). Her work can be seen all over the world and is on some of the most prominent buildings in the UK including Buckingham Palace. She died at the age of 98. Coade Stone is no longer used as Portland Cement was invented and the factory ceased trading in 1833. The Pillars can be seen in a garden of Portobello Promenade at the foot of John Street. WILLIAM (NED) BARNIE ENGLISH CHANNEL SWIMMER William Barnie known as Ned was the first Scotsman to swim the English Channel. At the age of 54 Ned was also the oldest person to swim the English Channel a record he held for 28 years. He was also the first to swim the English Channel in both directions (on the 28 July 1951 from England to France and on the 16 August 1951 from France to England) within the same year. The house where he lived has a plaque in his honour and can be found in Straiton Place, Portobello. SCIENCE TEACHER 1898 - 1983 ROCK COTTAGE Joppa was a major supplier of salt from the 1600s to 1953 when the last salter closed for business. Salt was extracted from the sea by evaporation on large metal pans heating the salt water which evaporated to leave the salt. The oldest House in the area Rock Cottage which was used by the salt workers. It was originally a lodge owned by a wealth landowner in the 1500s. THE TOWER The Tower at Portobello was built in 1785 by Mr James Cunningham from stones window sills and lintels from properties that were knocked down to allow the South Bridge in Edinburgh to be built. Sir William Russell Flint | Portobello Edinburgh Sir William Russell Flint died in December 1969, aged 89. He was born in Edinburgh on 4th April 1880 and went to school at Daniel Stewart’s College Edinburgh. He lived in Portobello with his parents for 14 years and became a worldwide known name and highly rated watercolourist. He also was the president of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours and was Knighted in 1947. Dr Hugh Dewar Memorial Fountain Abercorn Park Portobello Edinburgh Dr Hugh Dewar’s patient Jane Anderson, died the day after Dr Hugh Dewar made a house call to deliver Jane’s first child in February 1914. Dr Dewar while trying to remove the placenta and umbilical cord noticed a ‘cord’ which he proceeded to pull. It was found that he had in fact removed the mucous membrane lining of the large intestine. No one can understand how a medically qualified person could make such a mistake but he did and Jane Anderson died in agony aged 25 the next day. Dr Dewar was arrested but on the day before his trial for culpable homicide, he took his own life. The inscription on the fountain reads; “This fountain has been erected in remembrance of Dr Hugh Dewar, Portobello, by his grateful patients and numerous friends, who deplore the loss in the prime of manhood of a kind friend and skilful and beloved physician. His quiet charity was known to the needy. 1866-1914” John Gibson Lockhart Bellfield Street Portobello John Gibson Lockhart (1794 – 1854) Son in Law of Sir Walter Scott and author of Sir Walter Scott’s Biography. John Lockhart was a writer and editor. He lived in the house at 37 Bellfield Street Portobello in 1827 for a short time and was regularly visited by Sir Walter Scott. Helen Hopekirk Portobello Edinburgh Helen Hopekirk was born on 20 May 1856, Portobello High Street. Helen Hopekirk attended the Edinburgh Institution for the Education of Young Ladies at 23 Charlotte Square. Helen Hopekirk was best known as a pianist and teacher during her lifetime. Old Town Hall Portobello Edinburgh Portobello was a separate burgh from Edinburgh until in 1896 it was incorporated into Edinburgh by Act of Parliament. The first town hall was built in 1863, and is presently a Baptist Church 187 Portobello High Street, The second town hall opened in 1878 on Portobello High Street, which is now the Police Station. A new town hall opened in 1914 which is still in use. FIGGATE BURN POND AND PICNIC PARK The Figgate Burn is where the original name of the area now known as Portobello was named. The history books show a place called Figgate Muir a moor land with a beach front, with a burn (The Figgate Burn) running from the Duddingston Loch. Figgate was first mentioned in 1296 William Wallace met with troops on the Figgate Whins. The Figgate Burn Figgate Pond and Park Figgate Pond and Picnic Park The Figgate park has a pond with a walkway over part of it and it is a great way to see the wild life that is in the park. The mills were for beating and cleaning of the wool before making into textiles. Galashiels Town Crest The Galashiels town crest depicts a fox trying to reach the ripe fruits on a plum tree. The motto Sour Plums refers to a Border raid (of which there were many!) which happened in 1337. At that time a party of English soldiers were taken by surprise whilst gathering plums ‘Soor Plums’ is also a well-known hard sweet. Border Reiver Soldier Statue The bronze statue of a 17th century Borders Reiver on horseback outside the Burgh Chamber and War Memorial. The Border Reiver term was used to describe the outlaws who raided along the Anglo-Scottish Border. They would raid homes, cattle rustle and many other criminal acts of violence. At their height during the period of the early 1300's and late 1400's They were against how their lands were given to the lords by the English aristocrats Robert Coltart Statue Galashiels was also home to the author of the famous Scottish song, "Coulters Candy". Robert Coltart was a weaver in the town, he also made confectionery in nearby Melrose. The song was created as an advertisement, BBC renamed it as "Sugar Candy" when played by the BBC. The song is possibly better known by the first line of its chorus "Ally, bally, ally bally bee". Coltart died in 1890. Sir Walter Scott Way There is a long distance walk way named "Sir Walter Scott Way" , which joins Moffat to Cockburnspath that passes through Galashiels. Simpson was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1863. On 4th November, 1847 Simpson first used chloroform. It was first used as an anaesthetic to help ease the pain during childbirth. Queen Victoria used chloroform during the delivery of Prince Leopold in 1853. Simpson was the first man to be knighted by the Scottish Court of the Lord Lyon for services to medicine. "Victo Dolore" (pain conquered) is the inscription on Simpson’s coat of arms. Simpson died at his home in Edinburgh at the age of fifty-eight. A burial spot in Westminster Abbey was offered to his family, but they declined and instead buried Simpson closer to home in Warriston Cemetery, Edinburgh. On the day of Simpson's funeral, a Scottish holiday was declared, including the banks and stock markets, with over 100,000 citizens lining the funeral cortege on its way to the cemetery, while over 1,700 colleagues and business leaders took part in the procession itself. Mary Erskine School Plaque Mary Erskine donated a sum of money from her husbands estate to the Company of Merchants of Edinburgh, to have a school built to educate the poor children of Edinburgh Merchant families. The School (Hospital as they were called) named Merchant Maiden Hospital first opened in the Cowgate in 1694. It then moved to new premises on the corner of Bristo Street (now Bristo Place) and Lothian Street in 1706. As it grew it moved again to new premises in 1818 at the Lauriston area at the foot of Archibald Place. In 1870 moving once more to larger premises in the New town and changing its name to Edinburgh Educational Institution for Young Ladies. It was renamed in 1889 to The Edinburgh Ladies’ College. George Watson’s moved to Archibald Place where the previously the Merchant Maiden (Hospital) school had been, they vacated in 1870 to move to Queen Street. George Watson's Boys College remained at Archibald Place from 1870 to 1932, before moving to Colinton Road where they remain. The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh moved to a new purpose built Hospital at Little France in 2003. Formally Lauriston Church Tollcross Edinburgh Lauriston United Presbyterian Church is Gothic style building from circa 1860. The church is now in the hands of The Muslim Welfare House which is a charitable organization for serving the needs of overseas students in Britain. Old Fire Station Tollcross Edinburgh The Central Fire Station opened in 1900 and served Edinburgh for circa 100 years before becoming a museum, but now it has been closed due to funding. This plaque was unveiled by councillor K Harrold, convener of the Lothian and Borders Fire Board, on the 11 September 2002, the first anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in New York where 343 firefighters gave their lives Old Fire Engine A fire engine from the past stands outside the museum in Lauriston Place that could have been used in the great fire in the High Street in the 1814 Heriots (Hospital) School Tollcross Edinburgh Heriot’s Gates in Lauriston Place Edinburgh was originally the back entrance to the School with the Front facing Edinburgh Castle The present front Gates of Heriot’s Hospital (School). The wealthy of Edinburgh would leave provision in their wills to have a Hospital Built, in 1650 George Heriot bequeathed a sum of money for a hospital to be built for the poor fatherless children of Edinburgh. George Heriot was the first others that followed were, George Watson who built a Hospital directly across from Heriot’s 1741. William Fettes had a (Hospital) school built on his land at Comely Bank in 1870, The Merchant Maiden Hospital (Mary Erskine’s) started in the cowgate in 1659, John Watson built a hospital at Ravelston 1762. Hospital was the name for a boarding School where poor children were educated in all social skills and academic learning. Telfer Wall The Telfer Wall at Lauriston Place Edinburgh The Telfer wall was built around Heriot’s (Hospital) School for its protection against invaders as it stood outside Edinburgh City Wall (Flodden Wall). The wall was built as an extension to the Flodden Wall specifically to protect Heriots Hospital. Link Edinburgh City Wall Cameo Picture House Tollcross Edinburgh The Cameo picture house opened in 1914 as the Kings Cinema The picture house was the first in Scotland to have a mirrored screen. With over 600 seats and an orchestral as there were only silent movies until 1930 the picture house was fitted with sound. By 1949 the picture house was requiring modernising and after refurbishment it change its name to what it is today The Cameo. In 1985 it became a multiplex with 3 screens and the main screen was restored to its original decor. Kings Theatre Tollcross Edinburgh The King's Theatre Edinburgh opened on the 8th December 1906 known as “The Grand Old Lady of Leven Street” Andrew Carnegie then one of the wealthiest men in the world (born in Dunfermline Fife living in America) laid the foundation stone which can still be seen today. Harry Lauder a Portobello entertainer and to become the highest paid performer in his time performed on stage at the Kings Theatre on many occasions and a memorial plaque to him is in the theatre. Another name that worked here as a young man, was a local lad Sean Connery who went on to become known around the world as James Bond and the rest is history. Sadly he died at the age of 90 in 2020. The King's Theatre is a place in Edinburgh for the Pantomime at Christmas and many productions throughout the year. Barclay Church Tollcross Edinburgh In 1858 a Miss Mary Barclay of 7 Carlton Terrace died, leaving over £10,000 for the erection of a Free Church. The Church was built circa 1863 and named after Miss Barclay and the streets around the church also took their names from Miss Barclay. The first service took place in the new Barclay Church in December of 1864. The First minister of the new Barclay Church was James Hood Wilson who remained until his death in 1906. In the church there is a bible in a glass case and its history is; The Bible is known as the ‘Vinegar Bible’ because of the misprint referring to the Parable of the Vineyard as the Parable of the Vinegar. There is evidence that the Castle was first built circa 1230. The Ramsay family have been linked to many famous times, at the Battle of Bannockburn 1314, the signing of the declaration of Arbroath 1320, the siege of Dunbar in 1338, the Battle of Flodden Field 1513 and the Gowrie conspiracy of 1600, Dalhousie Castle was sold by the Ramsay’s in 1972 and has been a Hotel since. Many of the original parts to the Castle still remain and is a unique place to stay or have a wedding. Vogrie Segway Adventure Trail BORTHWICK CASTLE Borthwick Castle, is one of the best preserved Tower Houses in Scotland. Built circa 1430 by Sir William de Borthwick. It was built on the previous the Mote of Locherwart. Built in the 13th century by the Locherwart. Melville Castle Melville Castle named after the first owner Galfrid De Melville Circa 1150. Melville Castle was also said to have been for a time owned by David Rizzio and Mary Queen of Scots often visited. Other Royals that have visited the castle are George IV in 1828 and in 1842 Queen Victoria visited Melville Castle when she was on her tour of Scotland. It is said that a ghost has been seen on many occasions and it is thought to be Queen Mary looking for David Rizzio. Melville Castle can be found at the very east end of Gilmerton Road at Melville Gate on the road to Dalkeith. At that time a Tower House stood on the lands. The mansion House that can be seen today was designed by William Adam. The only part of the old tower that remains is the Oak Room. The Mansion took almost 10 years to complete circa 1730 and is said to be “one of the most important Georgian country houses in Scotland”. James Dundas was born in 1570 and was educated at St. Andrew's University. He died in 1628 and is buried within the vestry Borthwick Church. His son Sir James Dundas became 1st Lord of Arniston 1620 - 1679 his son Robert Dundas 2nd Lord Arniston 1650 – 1726, Robert Dundas 3rd Lord Arniston, 1685 – 1783, Henry Dundas born 1742 1st Viscount Melville 18th child of 19 to Robert Dundas 3rd Lord Arniston step brother to Robert Dundas 4th Lord Arniston. Henry Dundas was to become the most powerful person in Britain. He died in his bed in Melville Castle 29 May 1811 and was buried in Lasswade Parish church. Robert Dundas 4th Lord Arniston, 1713 – 1787, Robert Dundas 5th Lord Arniston (6th June 1758 died 17 June 1819). The title continued as Baronet from 1898 until the death of the last male heir, Thomas Calderwood Dundas who died in 1970 when the title died out. The present owner Althea Dundas-Bekker. NEWBATTLE ABBEY and GARDENS Newbattle Abbey a Cistercian Monastery was founded in 1140 by King David I. Newbattle Abbey was also where a council of Nobles met in 1320 and drafted a parchment (letter) to Pope John XXII asking him to recognise Scotland’s independence as a country and acknowledge Robert the Bruce as the lawful king. (The letter was, The Declaration of Arbroath). Mark Kerr made the old Abbey into a family home after taking it from the Monk in 1560. The Kerr Family were an important and influential family in Scotland becoming the Earls of Lothian and in 1701 the Marquis of Lothian. It was in the Kerr family until the 1930s when Newbattle Abbey was changed to an adult residential college. In 1937it was gifted to the people of Scotland. ST NICHOLAS CHURCH and VAULT The original section of the church was built in the early 15th century Sir James Douglas (The Black Douglas), 1st Earl of Morton, and his wife Princess Joanna, daughter of James I are the effigies on the tomb next to the door to the Buccleuch Burial Vault. Look up at the gargoyles on the church walls. DALKEITH PALACE DALKEITH Original owners were the Grahams Lord William de Graham, of Abercorn and Dalkeith was first of the Graham family mentioned living in Dalkeith where he died in 1139. The Castle was destroyed in 1547 by an English Army. It then became the Douglas family stronghold. It was finally sold to the Buccleuch family in circa 1640. James Douglas 4th Earl of Morton who became the Regents of Scotland in 1572 ruled Scotland on behalf of James VI infant son of Mary Queen of Scots. There has been many occupiers of what was Dalkeith Castle renamed circa 1700. No less than in 1650, Oliver Cromwell's Commander, General Monk, Cromwell's Governor in Scotland made Dalkeith Palace his headquarters. The Earl of Morton was executed 1581 in Edinburgh on the Maiden a guillotine which stood at the foot of the Canongate which was said he had brought up from England. (can be seen in National Museum of Scotland) The Duke of Buccleuch is still the owner of the estate. Dalkeith Palace Orangery The Orangery at Dalkeith Palace was built circa 1830 at the time it was the state of the art Orangery with under-floor heating and it provided fresh fruit for the Palace. DALKEITH CORN EXCHANGE / MUSEUM The Dalkeith Corn Exchange was built in 1854 and was the largest corn market in Scotland’s. The Corn Exchange was also where both Gladstone and Churchhill both made speeches, it later became a ballroom where up to 800 could dance the night away. It now houses the museum for Dalkeith, managed by the Dalkeith History Society. The public entrance to the museum is in St Andrew Street which is at the back of the building. DALKEITH TOLBOOTH The last Man Hung in Dalkeith was William Thomson on March 1, 1827. Sentenced to hang for highway robbery a large crowd gathered in front of the Tolbooth see the hanging which lasted circa 45 minutes. Leaving William Thomson Hanging for around 30 minutes to ensure he was dead. The last hanging in Scotland took place in Aberdeen in 1963 a Henry John Burnett. WATER TOWER HOUSE The Water Tower was constructed for the Edinburgh Water Company in 1879. It is an octagonal polychrome brick water tower it was no longer required and was left empty form around 1946. Gerry Goldwyre and his wife purchased the Water Tower and converted it into a home. In 1994 Gerry won MasterChef. ROBERT BURNS FOUNTAIN The Burns Memorial Drinking Fountain was commissioned in 1896 by the Dalkeith Burns Club to mark the centenary of the death of Robert Burns and was paid for by the residents of Dalkeith. It was erected in Dalkeith’s High Street in 1899 and moved locations on several occasions but has now been returned to the High Street. The structure has four columns with a domed canopy. Known locally as the “Burns Monument”, it was not in fact installed until 1899 and, for many years after, was one of the main focal points in Dalkeith High Street. SINCLAIR’S of ROSLIN Henry Sinclair was born in Roslin Castle in 1345 and it is claimed that he travelled to lands west of the large ocean in 1398 making him the first to discover the Americas, Henry Sinclair was Lord of Shetland, 1st Earl of Orkney, Baron of Roslin and Grand Master Knights Templar. The Sinclair family were world travellers and fought in battles worldwide. When Henry Sinclair and his men were in the Americas one of the party Sir James Gunn died and a grave stone was carved and placed in his memory. This stone still remains now known as Prospect Hill, located in Westford, Massachusetts. This is known as the Westford Knight. ROSLIN CASTLE Roslin Castle is only 200 yards from Rosslyn Chapel the castle has been forgotten about but is worth a visit now a partial ruin it was originally built circa 1300 and has had a very turbulent history. There are stories of ghosts on horseback and a hound that prowls the woods around the castle. ROSSLYN CHAPEL The Earl and Countess of Rosslyn are the present owners of Rosslyn Chapel which was founded by their descendants in 1446. It has been brought to the attention of the world by the book and film The Da Vinci Code. Visit the chapel and grounds and take the tour which will tell you all about Rosslyn Chapel. Old Rosslyn Inn Next to Rosslyn Chapel was a resting place for travellers There has been many notable travellers stayed the night including Edward VII, Robert Burns, Walter Scott, William Wordsworth and his wife, Alexander Naysmith and Dr Johnson and James Boswell COUSLAND SMIDDY The Cousland Smiddy (Blacksmiths) on this site since circa 1700 attached a butt ‘n’ ben circa 1735 a small place to live. A later Blacksmiths cottage circa 1820 and a new workshop circa 1940. NATIONAL MINING MUSEUM SCOTLAND The National Coal Mining Museum opened in 1984. The Lady Victoria Colliery, was first mined in 1895. It closed its production in 1981. The Lady Victoria Colliery is the best preserved Victorian collier in Europe a place to see what people had to endure to bring coal to people's homes. BOY ON A PIT PONY The sculpture of a horse with a small boy on its back and a miner leading the Pit Pony in memory of all the miners that worked in the pits from childhood. DRYDEN TOWER Stands on the summit of a hill which gives views as far as the Forth Estuary. Dryden Tower built circa 1850 by the owners of Dryden House (Demolished) was for viewing their lands and shipping moving up and down the Firth of Forth. OXENFOORD CASTLE The original Tower House was inherited by Lady Dalrymple in 1799. Robert Adam, design a larger mansion house incorporating the Tower House at that time. The tower house built in the 12th century. The property was owned by the Dalrymple’s of Stair in 1760. It was used as a girls’ private boarding school for over 50 years and closed in 1984. It is now a private residence of the Dalrymple family. The castle can be booked for Private & Corporate Events and Weddings. BILSTON GLEN MINERS MEMORIAL Bilston Glen was a monster of coal mining, which began in the area circa 1685. At its height of production there was circa 2000 workers with up to a million tons of coal per year. The memorial in the centre of Loanhead is to the miners who died in the production of coal. MIDLOTHIAN ARTIFICIAL SKI SLOPS All year round Skiing and Snow Boarding The Ski slop is situated on the Pentland Hills On the outskirts of Edinburgh and is open to all. Opened in the 1960's it has been used for the training of the Olympic ski and boarders since 2010 There is a ski lift and floodlighting for evening use. COUSLAND CASTLE (Tower House) Records show that there has been a structure on the site circa 1200. The Castle was burned in 1529. Following the Battle of Pinkie in 1547, the castle was partially destroyed by Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset. It was rebuilt and has passed through many families and was still in use in the 18th century Pathhead War Memorial CANTER by Andy Scott Unveiled by HRH Princess Royal in 2018 at the new veterinary building on the University of Edinburgh's Bush Estate TEMPLE VILLAGE MIDLOTHIAN The historic village of Temple, headquarters in Scotland of the Knights Templar from 1153 to circa 1310. The old Kirk is built prior to 1153. The village was originally known as Balantrodoch before 1570. It is known that King David I of Scotland, granted the manor and chapel of Balantrodoch to the Order of the Knights Templar in 1153. Old gravestones showing carved symbols of skull and crossbones, associated with death and the Knights Templar. Others gravestone carvings, the trowel and egg timer, and the symbol of the compass and set square are associate with the Freemasons PENICUIK HOUSE The Grounds of Penicuik House were in the same family for over 300 years. The Barony of Penicuik was acquired by John Clerk in 1654. The first house being Newbigging House which was demolished in 1761 and the present house Penicuik House was built. The house was extended with two large wings in 1857. Sadly a fire left the house as a ruin on the 16 June 1899. The only option was to convert the Stables to a new house in 1900. Penicuik House Preservation Trust (PHPT) has now restored the original Penicuik House that was burnt down in 1899 to its external magnificence. THE NEWBATTLE VIADUCT LOTHIANBRIDGE The Lothian Bridge has 23 arches which spans the River Esk. The Lothian Bridge Viaduct was built to join collieries in 1847 and carried the rail line from Edinburgh to Carlisle before closing in 1972. It is now being used for the Border railway linking Edinburgh with the Scottish Borders. HAWTHORNDEN CASTLE Hawthorndean Castle dates from the 15th century, The land owned by The Douglas's a powerful family with Royal connections. The poet Sir William Drummond of Hawthorndean , was born here. Visitors in 1618 by English poet Ben Jonson . In the following century Dr Johnson visited Hawthornden. This house has been much altered, including a major modernisation of the mid-19th century. The arms of the Abernethy family were installed above a door in 1795, by Dr William Abernethy Drummond , Bishop of Edinburgh . The bishop also added a memorial in honour of his ancestors Sir William Drummond and Sir Lawrence Abernethy of Hawthornden. Hawthornden Castle was owned by the Drummonds until the early 1970s. It was left to the butler when the last Drummond died, then sold to Douglas Adamson, a well known and respected fine art and antiques dealer from Edinburgh, and his family, who turned it back into a home. The house was also open to the public. The Adamson family lived there until the mid-1980s when Douglas Adamson died. The Castle was then sold to Drue Heinz , the widow of H. J. Heinz II . making it into a sanctuary for writers to peacefully live and work, called the Hawthorndean Literary Retreat There are a number of man-made caves in the cliffs beneath the castle. One cave serves as a doocot , with 370 compartments. There is a tradition that King Robert the Bruce and Sir Alexander Ramsay of Dalhousie once found shelter in the caves underneath it.
