Candlemaker Row Grassmarket Edinburgh Candlemaker Row Grassmarket History Candlemaker Row was once the main thoroughfare from the Grassmarket out of Edinburgh linking with Jamaica Street (now Chamber Street) which ended at Blackfriars Abbey (foot of Infirmary Street). Also continuation of Bristo Street. Candlemaker Row winds up from the Grassmarket at Cowgatehead to Greyfriars Place at George IV Bridge and Chamber Street where the Scottish National Museum Stands. At the top of Candlemaker Row is where the statue of Greyfriars Bobby can be found an icon of the City of Edinburgh. A small street of to the east halfway up Candlemaker Row (Merchant Street ) has restaurants, pubs and accommodation and the George IV Bridge can be sent stretching over the street. Greyfriars Bobby Statue Greyfriars Bobby was a Skye terrier who became known in 19th-century Edinburgh after spending 14 years guarding the grave of his owner, John Gray. Bobby himself died in 1872. A year later a statue was erected at the top of Candlemaker Row across from the Greyfriars Kirkyard. There is also a red granite headstone in Greyfriars kirkyard near the gate. The Tower at Portobello which still stands was built in 1785 by Mr James Cunningham from stones window sills and lintels from properties that were knocked down to allow the South Bridge to be built. The South Bridge is visible from the Cowgate where it passes over the street. Nicolson Square was built on Nicolson Park circa 1750 on land owned by Lady Elizabeth Nicolson at the same time as she built a new road which was later named Lady Nicolson Street and now shortened to Nicolson Street a continuation of the South Bridge linking the South with the Old Town of Edinburgh. There is a square of Nicholson Street with a garden. In the Garden is a Brass Pillar and Iron Fountain. Charles Darwin attended the Medical School for 2 years but did not complete the course due to its degree of difficulty. However, he went on to write “The Origin of Species” later in his life. If you walk past the bollards you will see on the wall a plaque to Charles Darwin that reads; Darwin | On this site | Charles Darwin (1809- 1882) | author of The Origin of Species | lodged at 11 Lothian Street | whilst studying medicine at the | University of Edinburgh | 1825-1827. West College Street Edinburgh West College Street which runs down to Chamber Street is where the Kirk O Field Port stood later to be called Potterrow Port. The image is an old map before the National Museum was built. William Topaz McGonagall South College Street Edinburgh William McGonagall was born in March 1825 and died in September 1902 he was a Scottish weaver, poet and actor and was regarded as the worst Poet in the English Language to put pen to paper. Writing over 200 poems of which the worst by far was “The Tay Bridge Disaster”. His turn of verse has been made known by the Goons, Monty Python, Spike Mulligan, and Peter Sellers. The name of the character Minerva McGonagall in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series was named after William McGonagall. Go down to the Poetry Library in the Canongate Edinburgh to read his works and judge for yourself. Inscription on the plaque above the door of 5 South College Street red; William McGonagall | Poet and Tragedian | Died Here | 29th September 1902. Now go back under the Potterrow Port and continue to see the sites. Agnes McLehose "CLARINDA" Agnes McLehose (1759-1841) was known as Nancy. Nancy first came to Edinburgh to live in Potterrow near the corner with Marshall Street after her husband left her to make his fortune in Jamaica. Robert Burns first meet with Nancy on the 4th December 1787 at afternoon tea and the assignation started. Mishap and misfortune stopped them from meeting for some time but they wrote to each other regularly. The love affair was to last until their death but their last meeting was in December of 1791 when Nancy left for Jamaica to be with her now wealthy husband. Read the famous letters written with code names Nancy being (Clarinda), Rabbie being (Sylvander) and not to forget the love song to Nancy `Ae Fond Kiss'. James Finlayson Nicolson Square Edinburgh James Finlayson born in Penicuik a few miles from Edinburgh in 1772. He became a textile mill engineer in 1820 he moved to Finland and seeing the opportunity in the fast flowing river of Tammerkoski, he open a company which manufactured machinery for the textile industry which became the largest industry in the Nordic countries in the late 19th and early 20th century. He was the person who made Tampere the second city of Finland. He also opened an orphanage for the children in Tampere. In 1838 he moved back to Scotland and moved to 8 Nicolson Square were he died at the age of 80. Brass Iron Founders’ Pillar Nicolson Square Garden Edinburgh The Brass Iron Founders’ Pillar features the biblical character, Tubal Cain the legendary founder of brass and iron making skills. The designer of The Brass Founders’ column was James Gowans the Lord Dean of Guild, commissioned by the Edinburgh and Leith Brass Founders for the 1886 International Exhibition of Science Art and Industry held in the Meadows where it won a gold medal. It was later shown at the Scottish National Exhibition in Saughton Park in 1908. It was then gifted to the City of Edinburgh. The pillar can be found in Nicolson Square Garden across from The Surgeons Hall Museum. Iron Fountain Nicolson Square Gardens The cast iron fountain was made at the Sun Foundry in Glasgow by George Smith & Co circa 1866 and was shown at the International Exhibition on the meadows in 1886. The granite plaque next to the fountain in Nicolson Square Garden gives a brief description of the pillar and fountain. King Fahd Mosque Islamic Centre of Edinburgh There is a community of over 12,000 Muslims in Edinburgh the first families arriving in the early 1950s. The Central Edinburgh Mosque has capabilities to hold over 1000 worshippers. The present Central Edinburgh Mosque is located on land that was purchased in the 1980s with a condition that the mansion house that is on the land would remain. The mansion house is still standing and is used for an exhibition and at Ramadan. The Mosque was opened in 1998 (1419) by the son of King Fahd of Saudi Arabia who donated 90% of the cost to build the centre. George Square George Square Gardens George Square in Edinburgh is in the centre of the University of Edinburgh Central Campus. In the centre of the square is a garden and around the square are buildings for learning. The Square and gardens were first laid in 1766. On a number of the walls are plaques of famous students. There are also a number of famous ex-residents who lived in the square. In the garden there are many benches to site and take time to contemplate the world and read a book. There are Standing Stones. One of which has been carved with a figure as if the stone had been split down the middle and the figure was revealed. George Square is also the centre of the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe every year in August. George Square + George Square Gardens Mrs Alison Cockburn Mrs Alison Cockburn was born in 1710 and died in 1794. She was a Scottish poet and socialite always in the company of the names of the Edinburgh enlightenment. Names she could call friends Robert Burns, Walter Scott and David Hume. The plaque reads; Mrs Cockburn 1710 -1794 Who wrote “The flowers O the forest ” lies buried near here. Buccleuch Parish Church (Chapel of Ease) The Church that stands in Chapel Street at the junction of the Cross Causeway was originally called the Chapel of Ease as St Cuthbert’s in Lothian Road had become too small for its congregation. The congregation of St Cuthbert’s Church had the Chapel of Ease built in 1754 and it opened its door in 1756. The most significant factor is the graveyard as there are a number of important people of the period buried in the graveyard here due to the over crowding of St Cuthbert's graveyard in Lothian Road Edinburgh. Dr Andrew Duncan (Pioneer of mental health) Dr Andrew Duncan a pioneer in mental Health was born in St Andrews on 17th October 1744. In May 1770 he was admitted a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians. In 1776 he founded the Edinburgh Dispensary. a great man of medicine who died in may 1832. For over 50 years he would climb to the top of Arthur Seat on the 1st of May to celebrate the Queen of the May which he did up to his death. Charles Darwin (1758–1778) Charles Darwin’s Uncle of the same name, (1758–1778), died at the age of 20 why studying at the University of Edinburgh Medical School. He is buried in the Duncan family vault in the Chapel of Ease. The Plaque to is nephew Charles Darwin Author (The Origin of Species) is on the wall in Lothian Street where he lived while at the University Medical School. Unlike his Uncle Charles Darwin was a brilliant student but his life was cut short. The words on his headstone read; Charles Darwin | was born at Lichfield | September 3rd 1758 | and died at Edinburgh | May 15th 1778 | Possessed of uncommon abilities and activity | He had acquired knowledge in every department | of medical and philosophical science much beyond | his years. Due to illness as a baby he lost his sight before he turned 1 year. He lived on the corner of Chapel Street and West Nicholson Street now a public house named (The Pear Tree) where on the walls can be seen many poems, written by Dr Thomas Blacklock, the blind poet. He was the person that invited Robert Burns to come to Edinburgh, where he introduced Burns to the high society of Edinburgh. Royal Company of Archers Buccleuch Street, Edinburgh The Royal Company of Archers has had its base in Edinburgh at Archers' Hall Buccleuch Street, Edinburgh since 1777. The Royal Company of Archers is a ceremonial unit that serves as the Sovereign's Bodyguard in Scotland, a role it has performed since 1822. The Archer’s would have tournaments in the Meadows where they would regularly practice. In 1424 by the act of the Scottish Parliament the game of football was prohibited for the more necessary science of archery. The restoration works were grant aided by funding from waste recycling group limited, distributed by WREN. The railings were cast at the Beaverbank foundry by Charles Laing & Sons Ltd. Robert Burns Meets Sir Walter Scott 1786 The one and only time Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott met was in the house of Professor Adam Ferguson in Sciennes House Place, also present were Adam Smith, Dugald Stewart and Joseph Black. This was a meeting place of the hierarchy of Edinburgh society. Inscription reads; This tablet commemorates | The meeting | of Robert Burns and | Sir Walter Scott | which took place here | In the winter of 1786-87. Edinburgh Synagogue Hebrew Community Centre The Synagogue in Edinburgh was opened in 1932 and 1500 people attended the first service. The Synagogue in Salisbury Road is the only Synagogue in Edinburgh and has been since 1932. The first Synagogue in Edinburgh was in North Richmond Street in 1817. There has been a large Jewish community in Edinburgh for nearly 200 years. The Salisbury Road building was the initiative of Dr Salis Daiches, who served for 27 years as the Rabbi. Piershill Cemetery is now the main Jewish Cemetery for Edinburgh. Royal Commonwealth Pool Dalkeith Road Edinburgh The Royal Commonwealth Pool opened in January 1970 for the Commonwealth Games which were being held in Edinburgh. The Royal Commonwealth Pool was also used for the 1986 Commonwealth Games which were also held in Edinburgh. It was also used in the 2012 Olympic Games and the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The pool is open daily to the public for swimming. The Innocent Railway The building of the Innocent railway was first started in 1826 to transport coal from the pits in Dalkeith Midlothian to Edinburgh. The carriages were horse-drawn and a great success. In 1831 further lines were added, connecting Leith and Musselburgh. This railway has the oldest rail tunnel inn Britain. The train became popular with passengers as it took them to the beaches at the coast. The route Starts at the tunnel under Holyrood Park Road. The Rail goods and coal yard were once situated where the houses in East Parkside stand now. The rail line is now a walkway and cycle path. The Innocent railway was purchased by the national rail in 1945. Waterloo Memorial Edinburgh This monument to the memory of the Battle at Waterloo 1815, in a square neglected, stands outside Hermits Termits House built by William Clifton 1734 and where the Scots Poet William Bell Scott was born in 1811. Hermits Termits House Hermits Termits House was built by William Clifton a solicitor of Excise, another resident of note was William Bell Scott (1811–90) was a Scottish poet, painter, art critic, was born in Hermits Termits St Leonard’s Edinburgh. The initials on the crest C under the crown for Clifton W for William and the M for Mary and 1734 was when the house was built. William Clifton was a descendent of Sir Gervase Clifton “the Gentle” who was at Pinkie Cleugh in 1547. Holyrood Distillery The Holyrood Distillery and Visitor Centre is based on the southside of Edinburgh beside Arthur Seat at St Leonard’s Hill. This is the first Edinburgh city centre distillery to produce in over 200 years when Edinburgh was a hive of distilleries and breweries. The Holyrood Distillery is house in the old railway building built circa 1830. “The Innocent Railway” Edinburgh’s first railway. This will be the first distillery to produce a single malt whisky in circa 100 years. The Holyrood Distillery has a high quality experienced team with decades of distilling behind them. Jeanie Deans Tryst Jeanie Deans is a fictional character in Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Heart of Midlothian. The Cottage is now gone but a plaque is on the wall near to the site of where the cottage once stood. The cottage overlooked Arthur Seat. The wall is what remains of the world's first Academy for the Deaf and Dumb . The academy was founded by Thomas Braidwood in 1760. He would teach sign language and lip reading. In 1783 he moved to the outskirts of London where he opened another school. His three daughters and grandson all became teachers of the deaf. The wall and plaque can be found on the path Infirmary Street Edinburgh Royal College of Surgeons Surgeon's Hall Museum Edinburgh Nicolson Street Edinburgh is where you will find The Royal College of Surgeons. The Incorporation of Surgeons and Barbers were founded in Edinburgh in 1505 and in 1722 the surgeons broke away from the barbers. The Surgeons first met in Dickson's Close Royal Mle, then moved to Drummond Street in 1697. Then in 1778 King George III granted a new charter giving the surgeons the title The Royal College of Surgeons of the City of Edinburgh. The present Royal College Building opened in 1832 and in 1851 Queen Victoria granted a charter giving its present title The Royal College of Surgeons. Royal College of Surgeons’ Museum Edinburgh The Surgeon’s Hall Museum collection grew from 1699. Royal Infirmary Edinburgh Original Royal Infirmary Gates The ornamental gates carved stone gateposts of the infirmary of High School Yards were saved and are now preserved at the entrance to the University Geography building in the adjacent Drummond Street. Drummond Street is also where a part of the Flodden Wall built in 1513 still stands. Royal Infirmary Edinburgh Charles Glover Barkla Born in Widnes, Lancashire, in 1877, Nobel Prize winner Physics in 1917, Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh in 1913 till his death in 1944 in Edinburgh Mungo Park Born 1771, near Selkirk in the Scottish Borders. He Studied at the University of Edinburgh both medicine and botany. A surgeon and explorer of Africa, also and author of a book, Travels into the Interior of Africa (1797). Symposium Hall Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh Symposium Hall was originally built in 1847 as the Roxburgh Free Church. It then was converted into St Michael's Episcopal Church in 1888 and in 1965 amalgamated with All Saints’ Church in Brougham Street Tollcross. After being empty for some years The Royal College of Surgeons acquired it. Receiving donations from two main benefactors the hall was opened as The King Khalid Bin Abdul Aziz Symposium Hall in 1982. Lady Glenorchy Parish Church The Lady Glenorchy Chapel opened 1774 and was at Leith Wynd which was demolished in 1845 to make way for the building of the Waverley rail station. Lady Glenorchy purchased an old Chapel in Roxburgh Place in 1856 which became the Lady Glenorchy Parish Church. The Chapel was demolished and rebuilt and opened in 1913 and became one of the most popular churches of it time in Edinburgh. It was sold in 1969 and has been used as various purposes. Edinburgh Festival Theatre Empire Ballroom The Edinburgh Festival Theatre has an audience capacity of almost 2000 and stages live shows of all kinds (Pantomime, ballet, opera, musicals, vaudeville and the Edinburgh International Festival). There has been a theatre on this site since 1830 staging acts from around the world including the Circus and The Great Lafayette. It was in 1892 it first opened as the Empire Palace Theatre. The first of several Moss Empires opened around Britain by Sir Edward Moss who purchase his first site in Edinburgh of Newsome’s Circus in Nicolson Street Edinburgh in 1891. Moss owned the Gaiety Variety Theatre which was in Chambers Street Edinburgh and it was so popular he required a bigger venue which he did. A fire in 1911 destroyed the stage area and a number of people were killed, The Great Lafayette one of the greatest illusionist of the time a comment made by Houdini himself. The Great Lafayette is buried in Edinburgh with his dog a gift from Houdini. After a major rebuild the theatre reopened in 1928 s the Empire Theatre and continues to entertain the public to this day. La Scala Theatre The La Scala Electric Theatre opened in 1912 for silent movies and live theatre acts. . The site had previously been used as a live theatre opening circa 1860 as the New Royal Alhambra and after a change of name closure came in 1886 as the Royal Princess Theatre. The La Scala later became a cinema changing its name in the early part of 1970’s. It finally close as cinema becoming a bingo hall and now a slot casino. Next - Bruntsfield Links & Meadows

Linlithgow Palace was home to the kings and queens of Scotland. Mary Queen of Scot's birthplace. On the north side a Loch and next to the only remaining building from the early 1400's in Linlithgow. Linlithgow Palace Charles I made an official visit to Linlithgow and stayed in the Palace in 1633. Oliver Cromwell defeated the Scots at Dunbar in 1650 and entered Linlithgow in October occupying Linlithgow Palace. Linlithgow Palace has had many residents Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed here in 1745. The government troops led by the Duke of Cumberland on leaving in pursuit of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite army set the Palace on fire in February of 1746. This was a common practice by the English as Cromwell’s troops set alight Holyrood Palace when leaving in 1650 on their way to Linlithgow. The palace you see today is much as it was left by Cumberland's troops in 1746. Linlithgow Palace Originally built on the site of a great manor house circa 1145 when David I was in residence.  It was King Edward I in 1301 that first built a wooden stronghold around the Manor House and St Michael’s Church. The The stronghold remained in English hands for over 13 years until the English were defeated at Bannockburn by King Robert I in 1314 and he reclaimed the Palace for Scotland. The future saw many English invasion of Scotland the Town and Stronghold were burnt to the ground with only St Michael’s church surviving. The rebuilding of the stronghold took place over a long period by a succession of Kings starting with James I in 1425 and continued by James III, James IV, James V and James VI. The remains of Linlithgow Palace that you can see today were there legacy. The completion of Linlithgow Palace took until circa 1620. James IV left Linlithgow Palace and was never to return to Linlithgow Palace as he led the battle at Flodden and became the last monarch to die in battle (1513). James IV son was born at Linlithgow Palace in April 1512 as was his daughter Mary a few days after James V died in December 1542. St Andrews South Street has the gates to the town (West Port) with St Andrews Coat of Arms carved in stone. South Street St Andrews South Street St Andrews South Street is where you will find St Mary's Quad and the Gregory meridian. The oldest part of the University and the (West Port) town gate. Madras College, Blackfriars Chapel ruins, the Town Hall and many other historic sites. The West Port South Street St Andrews Scotland The West Port was built circa 1580 and is the only remaining gate in its original position in Scotland. The gateway may have been part of a town wall that would have been closed at night, in case of invasion by the English or French. The gate was extensively refurbished in 1843. Above the centre of the arch is the St Andrews Coat of Arms. The original plaque in the St Andrews Museum (Kinburn House). Blackfriars Chapel Ruins Blackfriars Chapel was built in 1525. The Blackfriars were Dominican Friars, introduced to St Andrews by Bishop Wishart after 1274. The chapel was built on an older church building, and consisted of a nave and transepts. The friary was damaged by fire in 1547 and destroyed in 1559 by a Protestant raid, only the chapel remained. Re-building took place in 1514. Only the north transept of the chapel now survives. Madras College Madras College is a Scottish comprehensive secondary school founded by Dr Andrews Bell in 1833 providing education for children between 11-18 years of age. Plaques to Charles Lapworth and Rev. Dr Andrew Bell can be found to the right of the Chapel Ruins. Charles Lapworth Plaque South Street St Andrews Charles Lapworth was a teacher at Madras College 1875 – 1881. A self-taught Geologist was the founder of a new geological time (The Ordovician Period) He became a Professor of Geology in 1881 at Birmingham University. Plaque Reads: CHARLES LAPWORTH, LLD, FRS, 1842-1920 Between 1875 and 1881 Lapworth was a teacher of English at Madras College. In his spare time he studied the Rocks of extinct creatures called Graptolites to help unravel the complexities of these ancient rocks. As a result of his careful studies, he proposed anew division of geological time, The Ordovician Period that is now recognised and used internationally. He also correctly interpreted the Moine Thrust Fault Zone in the North West Highlands of Scotland as amass of older rocks pushed over younger ones, an idea which at the time conflicted with orthodoxy. He left St Andrews in 1881 to become Professor of Geology at the University of Birmingham. Dr Andrew Bell Plaque South Street St Andrews Dr Bell was born in South Street St Andrews in 1753 he died in 1832. Son of Bailie Bell, Andrew was Founder of the Madras College pioneered the Madras System of Education. Teaching system which went worldwide, where older children taught younger children. Plaque reads: The Reverend Dr Andrew Bell 1753 – 1832 An educational reformer and philanthropist. He was born in St Andrews. It was while serving in Madras in India that he developed a form of schooling where the older pupils taught the younger. When he returned he introduced his “Madras” or monitorial system as an economical form of mass education. The idea spread, Madras Schools appearing in Canada and Australia. Among the other local benefactions was the Bell fund for the benefit of St Andrews. He ended his career as Prebendary of Westminster Abbey. Where he is buried. Dr John Adamson (1809 –1870) Dr John Adamson lived at 127 South Street in St Andrews from 1848 to 1865. He studied medicine at the University of St Andrews and the University of Edinburgh. He qualified with a licentiate diploma (LRCS) from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1829. St Andrews played a major part in the early development of photography, Due to Adamson’s friendship with Sir David Brewster he became heavily involved with studying the calotype and played a leading role in its research. He was also responsible for the first calotype portrait in Scotland 1840-1842 (mid 1842), He taught his brother Robert Adamson about the calotype process. Robert, in collaboration with David Octavius Hill, (Rock Cottage Calton Hill Edinburgh) used this process later to produce more than 2500 photographs from 1843 to 1848. He also taught Thomas Rodger the technique and art of photography and inspired him to become a pioneering photographer. Brewster, Adamson and Rodger made St Andrews a world centre of Photography. Hamish McHamish Statue Logies Lane St Andrews (next to Holy Trinity Church) Hamish McHamish was a ginger cat, (aged 15 years) that lived in St Andrews Scotland. He became an international star when a book entitled Hamish McHamish of St Andrews: ‘Cool Cat about Town’ was published. Hamish a social media star with his own Facebook page and Twitter account @Hamish_McHamish. A nomadic cat that was looked after by many of the residents of St Andrews. Once owned by Marianne Baird. James Boswell and Samuel Johnson Plaque This is the site of the Glass Inn 29 South Street where James Boswell and Dr Johnson had supper on 18th August 1773. We had a dreary drive in a dusky night to St Andrews where we arrived late. We found a good supper at Glass's Inn. Closed circa 1830. James Gregory's Meridian Line South Street St Andrews South Street St Andrews Scotland James Gregory was first Regis professor of Mathematics. He and two others were the founders of calculus. He invented the Gregorian telescope. The Meridian Line was established in 1672. James Gregory mathematically established a meridian line, a line circling earth from pole to pole along which the time is the same this line passed through St Andrews. The Greenwich Meridian (GMT) is now how time is calculated around the world. St Andrews Meridian / Gregory's Meridian is 12 minutes behind GMT Stand with one foot on each side of the line and you will be standing in both the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. You also gave you an extra 12 minutes to get to where you are going. South Street King James Library The common library in St Andrews was founded by King James VI & I in 1612. With gifts from The Royal family, Archbishop of Canterbury and royal librarian. It was not until 1642 that the building on South Street which now houses the King James Library, St Mary’s College Library, opened as a library. The upper floor was used by Regius Professor James Gregory as his workplace from 1668-1674. The King James Library Building on the lower floor was a public hall where the Scottish Parliament sat in 1645-46 and where the meridian line was first laid in his workshop in 1748 the continuation can be seen in the pavement in South Street. Due to the Copyright Act of 1709, the University was entitled to claim a copy of any book registered at Stationer's Hall. This explains the depth and extent of our 18th century printed collections. The college libraries were officially integrated into the common library in 1783. Library extensions were built in 1889-1890 and in 1907-1908 as collections continued to grow. He was knighted for services to the town and University and received an honorary LLD in 1856 James David Forbes House and Plaque South Street St Andrews James David Forbes was born in Edinburgh 20 April 1809 at 86 George Street. He was educated at Edinburgh University in 1825. At 19, became a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and in 1832 he was elected to the Royal Society of London. In 1859 he was appointed successor to David Brewster as principal of the United College of St Andrews, which he held until his death in 1868. It could be said he was first to study the heating of the earth. Bailie Bell's House and Foundry South Street St Andrews In 1620 Edward Raban came to St Andrews and set up a printing press in a building on the corner of South Street and Church Street. This was later demolished by Bailie Bell in 1740 so he could build his house. This house is where his son was born in 1753 (Andrew). Andrew (Dr Andrew Bell) was to found Madras College and the "monitorial system" of education. Holy Trinity Church Christian Institute South Street St Andrews The building in South Street now the Christian Institute was originally built as a Main Post Office circa 1890 George Martine of Claremont 1635 -1712 He was a lawyer commissary clerk of St Andrews and author of the first history of the "Reliquiae Divi Andreae" (1683) He lived in 56 South Street St Andrews as did his son. George Martine (the younger) FRS 1700 - 1741 George went to the University of St Andrews when he was thirteen. Later, he went to study medicine at the University of Edinburgh in 1720 and the University of Leyden, where he graduated in 1725. He was a Physician, Surgeon and geologist, George was the first to make a careful study of heat and scales of temperature, making the first estimate -400F, of the absolute zero temperature. He made the first useful mercury in glass clinical thermometer. Leith Links Edinburgh Where the Rules of Golf Were First Written The beginning of golf to rules was when John Rattray wrote the 13 rules in a book and signed them. Not discovered until 1937 when a member of the Company of Gentlemen Golfers at Edinburgh, on looking through old minutes of previous club meetings found rules written at the back of a book. The book contained now to be known as the original rules of golf signed by John Rattray the club captain at that time 7th March 1744. Leith Links John Rattray Surgeon Sportsman & Jacobite John Rattray's Statue stands next to three stones with bronze plaques. The inscriptions on the plaques read; John Rattray (1707-1771) signed the original rules of golf drawn up in March 1744. Eleven golfers competed in this first “open’’ golf tournament played over Leith Links on 2nd April that year. Edinburgh Town Council enacted regulations dated 7th March, demanded written rules and commissioned 1 Silver Club as the prize. Rattray won and the Gentlemen Golfers 13 Rules Articles & Laws in Playing of Golf still form the basis of today’s global game. As winner Rattray became Captain of the golf for the year and first fixed a silver ball with his initials to the silver club. He won again in 1745. That Year however, Rattray’s life took a dramatic turn. As a surgeon and Jacobite he became surgeon general to Bonnie Prince Charlie was captured in Culloden and set to hang. Rescue came when his golfing companion Lord Duncan Forbes of Culloden gained his release. Rattray played and won in 1752. Leith is the birthplace of competitive golf, first home of the Gentlemen Golfers who wrote the original rules and witness to John Rattray’s inaugural silver club victory. The First Golf Competition to Written Rules The first competition was played over five holes at Leith Links: The first hole was Sawmill (Braehead) 414 yards (379 m), North Mid Hole 461 yards (422 m), East Hole 426 yards (390 m), South Mid Hole 495 yards (453 m) and the last hole Thorntree Hole 435 yards (398 m) The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers On 7th March 1744 The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers (the called The Gentlemen Golfers) officially came into being here at Leith Links, when the City of Edinburgh presented the golfer with a silver club for annual competition. On the 7th March 1994, the actual 250th anniversary of the club, was celebrated by the planning of a white hawthorn tree near the finish of the 5th (Thorntree) hole, by The Lord Provost of Edinburgh, The Right Honourable Norman Irons and the Captain of The Honourable Company, Mr Douglas Foulis. On Friday, 18th March 1994, in celebration a 6-a-side two-ball foursome challenge match was played here by the High Constables of the Port of Leith versus The Honourable Company. The matches were started off by the Lord Provost, the players were dressed as i the 18th century. They played with wooden clubs of the time and with 'feathery' golf balls filled with goose feathers. Three holes were played, the 1st (sawmill), the 2nd (North Mid Hole), and the 5th (Thorntree). The Honourable Company won two matches to one. The Honourable Company moved to Musselburgh Old Course in 1836 and then to Muirfield in 1891. East Saltoun Attractions East Lothian Saltoun Hall East Saltoun East Lothian Saltoun Hall the De Morville family became owners of the lands of Saltoun circa 1140 with the original Saltoun Tower which over the centuries has been added to and changed hands from De Morville family to Abernathy family (1260) to Fletcher family circa (1640). Saltoun Hall was divided into apartments circa 1970. When the Fletcher family converted the Stable Court for their own use as a house. Fletcher Fountain East Saltoun East Lothian The Fletcher family became owners of the lands and Barony of Saltoun in 1643. Andrew Fletcher (Lord Milton) was a commissioner in the last Scottish Parliament (1707), he was also commissioner of Haddingtonshire in 1678-1707. Andrew was born in Saltoun in 1655. Andrew was a writer and author a a number of books but was chiefly a politician. Fletcher Clan Crest: A bloodhound on a Helmet , with Griffins on each side and a shield in the center. Fletcher Clan Motto: Dieu Pour nous (God for us). The Drinking fountain is a memorial to John Fletcher of Saltoun (1827-1903) erected in 1804. Fletcher the Patriot Andrew Fletcher born in Saltoun, 1653 was The Patriot, statesman, political writer. He believed Scotland should be a truly independent nation with power vested in Parliament not in a monarchy in London. Andrew Fletcher should be remembered for his struggle to retain independence for his country. Whittingehame Attractions East Lothian Whittingehame House East Lothian Balfour Family Whittingehame Estate near Haddington East Lothian was purchased by James Balfour in 1817 when he had Whittingehame House built. He also had the village moved as it obstructed his view from his new house. James Balfour’s grandson Arthur Balfour, who was born in Whittingehame House served as Prime Minister from 1902 to 1905. As Foreign Secretary during the First World War he issued the “Balfour Declaration” which later led to the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Viscount Traprain (Earl of Balfour) change Whittingehame House into a school between 1939 and 1941 for Jewish refugee children. Circa 200 children attended the school over the period. It then returned to a family home and then in 1950 for circa 10 years it was used as a school once again before being renovated into separate apartments. Whittingehame Parish Church East Lothian Whittingehame is a small village between Haddington and Dunbar just south of East Linton. The first church in the area was established by St Cuthbert circa 660, near Luggate (no remains of the church can be seen). In 1225 a new church at Whittingehame was built dedicated by the Bishop of St Andrews on 7 May 1245. After time the church needed replaced and in 1722 a new church was built. In 1820 James Balfour rebuilt the church which can be seen today. Whittingehame most famous resident was Arthur Balfour (Prime Minister of Britain) who is buried in the family aisle in the church. Whittingehame Tower In 1372 George de Dunbar, 10th Earl of March, gave to James Douglas of Dalkeith, (2nd Earl of Douglas and Mar) the manor of Whittingehame. The Douglas family remained owners over the next 300 years as the property transferred on marriage. Elizabeth (1632–1668) daughter of Sir Arthur Douglas married Alexander Seton in 1652 and their daughter also Elizabeth married William Hay of Duns in 1695. They in turn sold the lands and property to James Balfour 1817. Whittingehame Arboretum Whittingehame arboretum has many different varieties of tree, The oldest is over 700 years old a Yew tree that radius is enormous. Other trees are the Blue Gum one of the earliest trees planted in 1846. There is a Monkey Puzzle tree, beech trees, Acer pseudoplatanus 'Variegatum' and Lebanese Cedar. Whittingehame Yew Tree The Whittingehame Yew tree over 700 years old and 60 foot (19 mtrs) high. One of a few Yew trees that can be seen in the Lothians others are in Colinton where Robert Louis Stevenson would play on a swing in the churchyard. Ormiston Yew probably the Whittingehame Walled Garden The walled garden was maintained by Miss Alice Balfour while living at Whittingehame here husband, Lord 1905 Lord Arthur James Balfour (1st Earl of Balfour) had a Temple built outside the garden wall in 1905.
