Edinburgh New town was built to a design of three main thoroughfares with a Garden square at each end and a number of streets crossing south to north. Queen Street being the end of the new town area. There is evidence that the Castle was first built circa 1230. The Ramsay family have been linked to many famous times, at the Battle of Bannockburn 1314, the signing of the declaration of Arbroath 1320, the siege of Dunbar in 1338, the Battle of Flodden Field 1513 and the Gowrie conspiracy of 1600, Dalhousie Castle was sold by the Ramsay’s in 1972 and has been a Hotel since. Many of the original parts to the Castle still remain and is a unique place to stay or have a wedding. VOGRIE HOUSE and COUNTRY PARK The original Vogrie house was built circa 1870 by James Dewar the whisky distiller and opened as a country park in 1980. Vogrie House like many old mansions and castle is said to be haunted. A property has been on the site since early 15th century when the Menzies family were owners. Vogrie Segway Adventure Trail BORTHWICK CASTLE Borthwick Castle, is one of the best preserved Tower Houses in Scotland. Built circa 1430 by Sir William de Borthwick. It was built on the previous the Mote of Locherwart. Built in the 13th century by the Locherwart. Melville Castle Melville Castle named after the first owner Galfrid De Melville Circa 1150. Melville Castle was also said to have been for a time owned by David Rizzio and Mary Queen of Scots often visited. Other Royals that have visited the castle are George IV in 1828 and in 1842 Queen Victoria visited Melville Castle when she was on her tour of Scotland. It is said that a ghost has been seen on many occasions and it is thought to be Queen Mary looking for David Rizzio. Melville Castle can be found at the very east end of Gilmerton Road at Melville Gate on the road to Dalkeith. At that time a Tower House stood on the lands. The mansion House that can be seen today was designed by William Adam. The only part of the old tower that remains is the Oak Room. The Mansion took almost 10 years to complete circa 1730 and is said to be “one of the most important Georgian country houses in Scotland”. James Dundas was born in 1570 and was educated at St. Andrew's University. He died in 1628 and is buried within the vestry Borthwick Church. His son Sir James Dundas became 1st Lord of Arniston 1620 - 1679 his son Robert Dundas 2nd Lord Arniston 1650 – 1726, Robert Dundas 3rd Lord Arniston, 1685 – 1783, Henry Dundas born 1742 1st Viscount Melville 18th child of 19 to Robert Dundas 3rd Lord Arniston step brother to Robert Dundas 4th Lord Arniston. Henry Dundas was to become the most powerful person in Britain. He died in his bed in Melville Castle 29 May 1811 and was buried in Lasswade Parish church. Robert Dundas 4th Lord Arniston, 1713 – 1787, Robert Dundas 5th Lord Arniston (6th June 1758 died 17 June 1819). The title continued as Baronet from 1898 until the death of the last male heir, Thomas Calderwood Dundas who died in 1970 when the title died out. The present owner Althea Dundas-Bekker. NEWBATTLE ABBEY and GARDENS Newbattle Abbey a Cistercian Monastery was founded in 1140 by King David I. Newbattle Abbey was also where a council of Nobles met in 1320 and drafted a parchment (letter) to Pope John XXII asking him to recognise Scotland’s independence as a country and acknowledge Robert the Bruce as the lawful king. (The letter was, The Declaration of Arbroath). Mark Kerr made the old Abbey into a family home after taking it from the Monk in 1560. The Kerr Family were an important and influential family in Scotland becoming the Earls of Lothian and in 1701 the Marquis of Lothian. It was in the Kerr family until the 1930s when Newbattle Abbey was changed to an adult residential college. In 1937it was gifted to the people of Scotland. ST NICHOLAS CHURCH and VAULT The original section of the church was built in the early 15th century Sir James Douglas (The Black Douglas), 1st Earl of Morton, and his wife Princess Joanna, daughter of James I are the effigies on the tomb next to the door to the Buccleuch Burial Vault. Look up at the gargoyles on the church walls. DALKEITH PALACE DALKEITH Original owners were the Grahams Lord William de Graham, of Abercorn and Dalkeith was first of the Graham family mentioned living in Dalkeith where he died in 1139. The Castle was destroyed in 1547 by an English Army. It then became the Douglas family stronghold. It was finally sold to the Buccleuch family in circa 1640. James Douglas 4th Earl of Morton who became the Regents of Scotland in 1572 ruled Scotland on behalf of James VI infant son of Mary Queen of Scots. There has been many occupiers of what was Dalkeith Castle renamed circa 1700. No less than in 1650, Oliver Cromwell's Commander, General Monk, Cromwell's Governor in Scotland made Dalkeith Palace his headquarters. The Earl of Morton was executed 1581 in Edinburgh on the Maiden a guillotine which stood at the foot of the Canongate which was said he had brought up from England. (can be seen in National Museum of Scotland) The Duke of Buccleuch is still the owner of the estate. Dalkeith Palace Orangery The Orangery at Dalkeith Palace was built circa 1830 at the time it was the state of the art Orangery with under-floor heating and it provided fresh fruit for the Palace. DALKEITH CORN EXCHANGE / MUSEUM The Dalkeith Corn Exchange was built in 1854 and was the largest corn market in Scotland’s. The Corn Exchange was also where both Gladstone and Churchhill both made speeches, it later became a ballroom where up to 800 could dance the night away. It now houses the museum for Dalkeith, managed by the Dalkeith History Society. The public entrance to the museum is in St Andrew Street which is at the back of the building. DALKEITH TOLBOOTH The last Man Hung in Dalkeith was William Thomson on March 1, 1827. Sentenced to hang for highway robbery a large crowd gathered in front of the Tolbooth see the hanging which lasted circa 45 minutes. Leaving William Thomson Hanging for around 30 minutes to ensure he was dead. The last hanging in Scotland took place in Aberdeen in 1963 a Henry John Burnett. WATER TOWER HOUSE The Water Tower was constructed for the Edinburgh Water Company in 1879. It is an octagonal polychrome brick water tower it was no longer required and was left empty form around 1946. Gerry Goldwyre and his wife purchased the Water Tower and converted it into a home. In 1994 Gerry won MasterChef. ROBERT BURNS FOUNTAIN The Burns Memorial Drinking Fountain was commissioned in 1896 by the Dalkeith Burns Club to mark the centenary of the death of Robert Burns and was paid for by the residents of Dalkeith. It was erected in Dalkeith’s High Street in 1899 and moved locations on several occasions but has now been returned to the High Street. The structure has four columns with a domed canopy. Known locally as the “Burns Monument”, it was not in fact installed until 1899 and, for many years after, was one of the main focal points in Dalkeith High Street. SINCLAIR’S of ROSLIN Henry Sinclair was born in Roslin Castle in 1345 and it is claimed that he travelled to lands west of the large ocean in 1398 making him the first to discover the Americas, Henry Sinclair was Lord of Shetland, 1st Earl of Orkney, Baron of Roslin and Grand Master Knights Templar. The Sinclair family were world travellers and fought in battles worldwide. When Henry Sinclair and his men were in the Americas one of the party Sir James Gunn died and a grave stone was carved and placed in his memory. This stone still remains now known as Prospect Hill, located in Westford, Massachusetts. This is known as the Westford Knight. ROSLIN CASTLE Roslin Castle is only 200 yards from Rosslyn Chapel the castle has been forgotten about but is worth a visit now a partial ruin it was originally built circa 1300 and has had a very turbulent history. There are stories of ghosts on horseback and a hound that prowls the woods around the castle. ROSSLYN CHAPEL The Earl and Countess of Rosslyn are the present owners of Rosslyn Chapel which was founded by their descendants in 1446. It has been brought to the attention of the world by the book and film The Da Vinci Code. Visit the chapel and grounds and take the tour which will tell you all about Rosslyn Chapel. Old Rosslyn Inn Next to Rosslyn Chapel was a resting place for travellers There has been many notable travellers stayed the night including Edward VII, Robert Burns, Walter Scott, William Wordsworth and his wife, Alexander Naysmith and Dr Johnson and James Boswell COUSLAND SMIDDY The Cousland Smiddy (Blacksmiths) on this site since circa 1700 attached a butt ‘n’ ben circa 1735 a small place to live. A later Blacksmiths cottage circa 1820 and a new workshop circa 1940. NATIONAL MINING MUSEUM SCOTLAND The National Coal Mining Museum opened in 1984. The Lady Victoria Colliery, was first mined in 1895. It closed its production in 1981. The Lady Victoria Colliery is the best preserved Victorian collier in Europe a place to see what people had to endure to bring coal to people's homes. BOY ON A PIT PONY The sculpture of a horse with a small boy on its back and a miner leading the Pit Pony in memory of all the miners that worked in the pits from childhood. DRYDEN TOWER Stands on the summit of a hill which gives views as far as the Forth Estuary. Dryden Tower built circa 1850 by the owners of Dryden House (Demolished) was for viewing their lands and shipping moving up and down the Firth of Forth. OXENFOORD CASTLE The original Tower House was inherited by Lady Dalrymple in 1799. Robert Adam, design a larger mansion house incorporating the Tower House at that time. The tower house built in the 12th century. The property was owned by the Dalrymple’s of Stair in 1760. It was used as a girls’ private boarding school for over 50 years and closed in 1984. It is now a private residence of the Dalrymple family. The castle can be booked for Private & Corporate Events and Weddings. BILSTON GLEN MINERS MEMORIAL Bilston Glen was a monster of coal mining, which began in the area circa 1685. At its height of production there was circa 2000 workers with up to a million tons of coal per year. The memorial in the centre of Loanhead is to the miners who died in the production of coal. MIDLOTHIAN ARTIFICIAL SKI SLOPS All year round Skiing and Snow Boarding The Ski slop is situated on the Pentland Hills On the outskirts of Edinburgh and is open to all. Opened in the 1960's it has been used for the training of the Olympic ski and boarders since 2010 There is a ski lift and floodlighting for evening use. COUSLAND CASTLE (Tower House) Records show that there has been a structure on the site circa 1200. The Castle was burned in 1529. Following the Battle of Pinkie in 1547, the castle was partially destroyed by Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset. It was rebuilt and has passed through many families and was still in use in the 18th century Pathhead War Memorial CANTER by Andy Scott Unveiled by HRH Princess Royal in 2018 at the new veterinary building on the University of Edinburgh's Bush Estate TEMPLE VILLAGE MIDLOTHIAN The historic village of Temple, headquarters in Scotland of the Knights Templar from 1153 to circa 1310. The old Kirk is built prior to 1153. The village was originally known as Balantrodoch before 1570. It is known that King David I of Scotland, granted the manor and chapel of Balantrodoch to the Order of the Knights Templar in 1153. Old gravestones showing carved symbols of skull and crossbones, associated with death and the Knights Templar. Others gravestone carvings, the trowel and egg timer, and the symbol of the compass and set square are associate with the Freemasons PENICUIK HOUSE The Grounds of Penicuik House were in the same family for over 300 years. The Barony of Penicuik was acquired by John Clerk in 1654. The first house being Newbigging House which was demolished in 1761 and the present house Penicuik House was built. The house was extended with two large wings in 1857. Sadly a fire left the house as a ruin on the 16 June 1899. The only option was to convert the Stables to a new house in 1900. Penicuik House Preservation Trust (PHPT) has now restored the original Penicuik House that was burnt down in 1899 to its external magnificence. THE NEWBATTLE VIADUCT LOTHIANBRIDGE The Lothian Bridge has 23 arches which spans the River Esk. The Lothian Bridge Viaduct was built to join collieries in 1847 and carried the rail line from Edinburgh to Carlisle before closing in 1972. It is now being used for the Border railway linking Edinburgh with the Scottish Borders. HAWTHORNDEN CASTLE Hawthorndean Castle dates from the 15th century, The land owned by The Douglas's a powerful family with Royal connections. The poet Sir William Drummond of Hawthorndean , was born here. Visitors in 1618 by English poet Ben Jonson . In the following century Dr Johnson visited Hawthornden. This house has been much altered, including a major modernisation of the mid-19th century. The arms of the Abernethy family were installed above a door in 1795, by Dr William Abernethy Drummond , Bishop of Edinburgh . The bishop also added a memorial in honour of his ancestors Sir William Drummond and Sir Lawrence Abernethy of Hawthornden. Hawthornden Castle was owned by the Drummonds until the early 1970s. It was left to the butler when the last Drummond died, then sold to Douglas Adamson, a well known and respected fine art and antiques dealer from Edinburgh, and his family, who turned it back into a home. The house was also open to the public. The Adamson family lived there until the mid-1980s when Douglas Adamson died. The Castle was then sold to Drue Heinz , the widow of H. J. Heinz II . making it into a sanctuary for writers to peacefully live and work, called the Hawthorndean Literary Retreat There are a number of man-made caves in the cliffs beneath the castle. One cave serves as a doocot , with 370 compartments. There is a tradition that King Robert the Bruce and Sir Alexander Ramsay of Dalhousie once found shelter in the caves underneath it. West Bow in Grassmarket Edinburgh has been nicknamed Diagon Alley because of simillarites with the street in Harry Potter Witches and demons. The West Bow conects the Grassmarket to the Royal Mile and the New Town at Victoria Street with George IV Bridge Edinburgh. West Bow Attractions Edinburgh The West Bow Edinburgh is a street with retail stores, pubs, night clubs and restaurants, starting from the east end of the Grassmarket and winding up to George IV Bridge. There are steps on the north side that connect to Castlehill and the Royal Mile. Victoria Street is a continuation of the West Bow which was created circa 1835 with demolition of many houses. The West Bow previously before George IV Bridge was built a Z shape narrow Wynd that connected the Grassmarket with Castlehill and the Lawnmarket. (More Harry Potter) Now the connection to Castlehill is steps that take you to the now named Upper Bow and Victoria Terrace a balcony walkway. The West Bow was extended by Victoria Street being a continuation of the West Bow to join George IV Bridge with the Grassmarket. West Bow Wellhead Grassmarket Edinburgh West Bow or Bowfoot Well was erected in 1674. The West Bow is a continuation of Victoria Street at the east end of the Grassmarket. This was the first well head built to supply water to the Grassmarket from the reservoir at Castle Hill. Until 1820 these square stone well heads were the only way in which the thousands of people of Edinburgh could access drinking water. The reservoir was filled by the springs from the Pentland hills. West Bow Wellhead Plate The inscription reads; The Bow Well stonework was restored in 2008 as part of the 12 monuments restoration project, a partnership between The City of Edinburgh Council and Edinburgh World Heritage. In 1674 Lord Provost Sir Andrew Ramsay instigated Edinburgh's firsts Piped Water supply. Robert Mylne, the king's master mason built the well, supervised by Sir William Bruce. The surveyor was George Sinclair and Peter Brauss a Dutch engineer, made the lead pipe work. The Old City Coat of Arms motto 'NISI DOMINUS FRUSTRA' means; Labour in vain without the lord'. On the other side 'VIRTUTE AQUISITUR HONOS' means, 'Honour is acquired by virtue'. West Bow Major Thomas Weir The West Bow had many well-known residents, one of which was a Major Thomas Weir born circa 1600 -1670 (Head of Edinburgh’s Town Guard) who everyone thought was a wizard and practices the Dark arts. He was burned at Greenside and many were convinced he haunted the West Bow. There were many claims of sightings which have been written about. His house was left vacant for many years and when an old soldier and his wife took up residence on the first night they awoke to the sight of a ghostly figure and left the property the next day, the house lay empty for circa 50 years before it was demolished. Major Weir’s Land were the houses on the east side of the West bow. West Bow Murder and Sorcery Lord Ruthven also was a resident of the West Bow, known as the man who was first to stab David Rizzio, Mary Queen of Scots secretary, before others joined in and Lord Darnley, Mary Queen of Scots husband dealt the final blow. This took place in the Palace of Holyrood House on the 9th of March 1566. More recently the West Bow has been linked with J K Rowling’s Harry Potter. With the old stories of the wizard the winding narrow road with high tenements the look of Daigon Alley with the Harry Potter shop and Witchery Tours. West Bow Old and New Map The West Bow was changed from a narrow winding road to a Street that connects the Old town of Edinburgh with the new Town street on the southside of the Royal Mile. From the Grassmarket the West Bow went up a steep hill turned right and then up and left ending at the foot of Castlehill. The New layout took the West Bow from the Grassmarket turning right and continuing up the new section which is Victoria Street and ends at George IV Bridge named in honour of King George IV when he visited Edinburgh and Scotland the first monarch since 1746 when the English defeated Bonny Prince Charlie and his army at Culloden. Edinburgh New Town Princes Street is one of three main streets in the original new town of Edinburgh. Princes Street has Shops on the north side and the southside is two gardens East and West Princes Street Garden. Princes Street Edinburgh Attractions and History Princes Street Shops Princes Street Edinburgh Attractions Edinburgh’s famous Street “Princes Street” originally named St. Giles Street after the city’s patron saint, Saint Giles. King George III, after consideration, rejected the name St. Giles Street as St Giles being the patron saint of lepers and also the name of a slum area on the edge of the City of London. It was renamed Princes Street after his sons, the Princes. Princes Street is approximately 2kms in length with shops on the north side and gardens on the south side of the street. First House in Princes Street The first house built in Princes Street was No 10 in 1769. This was Silk Mercer (haberdasher) owner Mr John Neale. Then Pooles Coffee House 1783, then Archibald Constable purchased the house in 1822. Nor’ Loch The Nor Loch stretched from under the North Bridge where the Waverley Station is now and in the west at the edge of St Cuthbert's Church, the Castle Rock and King's Stables Road. The draining of the Nor Loch was required due to the fact that it had been heavily polluted from centuries of sewage draining downhill from the Old Town. The draining of the Nor Loch began in 1759 by way of making a canal that emptied into Lochend at the back of Calton Hill. The Gardens were then laid. In the 1840s the railway was built in the valley, and Waverley Station opened in its present form in 1854. The first station was originally named Canal Street Station where Waverley Market now stands. Princes Street Gardens Princes Street Gardens is a public park in the centre of Edinburgh in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. Before the gardens were formed ( West Gardens Laid 1816-20 and East Gardens Laid 1830), a Loch (Lake) surrounded the Castle Rock, separating the two Gardens West and East is the Mound (building started 1781) which was formed from earth and rubble when the new town was under construction, it became a connection between Old and New Edinburgh. Royal Scottish Academy of Art Royal Scottish Academy of Art Mound Edinburgh The oldest and most prestigious academy of contemporary art in Scotland. The Academy is active in the promotion of young artists from Scotland’s Colleges of Art and Architecture and takes a lead role in promoting living artists in Scotland. The Celtic Cross in his memory can be seen at the east end of the church near the entrance to Princes Street Gardens Edinburgh. St John’s Scottish Episcopal Church, Daniel Sandford a 26-year-old parson from England opened a chapel in West Register Street in 1794. He was consecrated Bishop of Edinburgh in 1806. Open St John’s in 1818, designed by William Burn. He made Edward Ramsay curator in 1827 when he died in 1830 Ramsay took over. He was appointed Dean of Edinburgh in 1846. A well respected and loved man died in 1872 20,000 lined the streets for his funeral. Procession. Anne Rutherford (Mrs Walter Scott Esq) 1733 - 1819 Anne Rutherford was born in 1733 and died in 1819 her grave can be seen on the east side St John’s Church west end Edinburgh. Her father was John Rutherford and her mother Jean Swinton. The Swinton family being one of the oldest families in Scotland. Anne Rutherford was mother of Sir Walter Scott her ninth child, six of which died in infancy. Sir Walter Scott’s, grandmother was a Halliburton which gave the Scott family the hereditary right to be buried in Dryburgh Abbey. Where Walter Scott is buried with family members. Sir Henry Raeburn R.A. 1756 -1823 Sir Henry Raeburn R.A. was born in Edinburgh in 1756 and became Scotland’s foremost portrait painter. He lived in Stockbridge area north of Edinburgh. HIs studio Raeburn House where he worked is in York Place Edinburgh an extension of Queen Street which was an original part of Edinburgh’s new town. He was knighted in 1822 and was portrait painter to King George IV. His work can be seen in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and on the outside wall of the Gallery stands a statue of Sir Henry Raeburn amongst others. A memorial stone is in St John’s Church at the west end of Princes Street close to Sir Walter Scott’s mothers grave. George Burnett 1822 -1890 George Burnett Lyon King of Arms grave stone is in St John’s graveyard at the west end of Princes Street Edinburgh. George was born in 1822 son of John Burnett, Fifth Laird of Kemnay Inverurie. The family home Kemnay House would pass to Alexander the 6th Laird, George’s older brother. George became a lawyer in 1845 a member of the faculty of Advocates and was appointed Lord Lyon King of Arms in 1866. He remained in the position until his death in 1890. Lord Lyon King of Arms is the most junior of the Great Officers of State in Scotland and is the Scottish official with responsibility for regulating heraldry in that country. Lang Dykes - Princes Street From Multrees Hill on the east to Kirkbraehead (Rutland Square) on the west. This road was called the ' Lang gait,' or 'Lang dykes,' a country road walled on either side with farm lands on the north side. The main road from east to west now replaced by the New Town. The road now where Rose Street is now. Princes Street New Town Designed originally by James Craig and built between 1770 and 1823 mainly residential properties with a number of commercial properties Johnnie alker Visitor Centre 145 Princes Street originally built as residential townhouses 144-147 the last to be built in Princes Street. 1823. In 1873 the properties were transformed into a luxury Hotel (Osborne Hotel). Change of use when the Scottish Liberal Club took possession and later was changed to retail. The modernisation took place in 1935 when it became Binns Department, and now the Johnnie Walker Experience. Old Clock 1962 the Clock on the corner of Princes Street and Hope Street was erected in 1962 and twice each hour the miniature Pipers circled the base of the Clock playing the tune Scotland the Brave. This was originally a Binns department store built in 1935 for a company founded in Sunderland in 1811 by a draper called George Binns. 128 Princes Street Edinburgh Originally built in 1866. The design a grand Italian Palazzo style by Peddie and Kinnear Architects originally built as the University Club, a private gentlemen's club. With Corinthian columns and a bow window on the first floor. 123 Princes Street Originally built as a townhouse, in 1869 and in 1873 the exterior of the building was finished in a grand Victorian style 112 Princes Street The building at 112 Princes Street in Edinburgh was built between 1882 and 1884. It officially opened on 1 February 1884 as the purpose-built clubhouse for the Edinburgh Conservative Club. This building housed the Gladstone Memorial Library on the first floor. In 1978 112 -109 were joined inside to make one large store on the upper floors when completed Debenhams opened in 1981 in May 2021 Debenhams store closed. 100 Princes Street Originally built as a town house for Lady Mary Clerk of Penicuik in 1798 after her husband’s death. In 1877 it became Dejay's Hotel opened by a Frenchman Calixte Dejay in 1879 it was purchased by Albert Thiem of German heritage naming it the Windsor Hotel. It then was purchased by the over-seas League and opened as The Royal Over-Seas League Edinburgh’s first mixed-gender private members' club. 90 Prince Street Originally a town house built circa 1780 where wealthy families lived. In 1866 A jeweller purchased the retail unit on the ground floor and opened his newly founded business in Princes Street the Jeweller being James Hamilton and his nephew, Robert Inches (who was knighted in 1915). In 1887 with success more space was required and they purchase r premises at No 88. combining the stores. They then purchased 87 George Street and moved in 1952 and still remain. The upper residential floors of 90 was a Turkish Baths from 1861 until circa 1920. 61 -62 Prince Street Originally built in 1780 as a town house residence Romanes and Paterson moved here in 1884 after the building was redesigned in 1870 to what you see today. 109 - 110 Princes Street It was built between 1770 - 1800 as private residences. In 1869 it was replaced with a new building as the luxury The Grand Palace Hotel. It then became the Scottish Liberal Club in 1890 and housed the Gladstone Memorial Library including bust of William Gladstone ) on the first floor. In 2023 The Gladstone Memorial Library, was sold by the Debenhams an is now located in Church Lane, Hawarden, Flintshire, CH5 3DF (North Wales, roughly 6 miles from Chester). 97 - 98 Princes Street Built in 1786 designed by James Craig a three-story and attic stone building on the corner of Princes Street and Frederick street with a main entrance hall and reception areas to welcome their visitors. This was the first tenements (based on a large Town House) of the new town and one of the only that still remain. The ground floor area was converted into a retail unit circa 1840. 70 -71 Prince Street The original area was built as a town house by James Craig circa 1780. With its first resident Scottish legal writer and inventor John Clerk of Eldin who lived here with his family until his death in 1812. The future transformed town house into mixed use, with shops on the ground and basements this town house was demolished and rebuilt as you see it know as the Edinburgh Café built in 1887 in the North European Renaissance style. The Edinburgh Café was sold and changed into mixed use ground floor retail and upper residential. In 1922 D. S. Crawford redesigned the building into Crawford’s Tea Rooms (the place to be seen). 60 Princes Street John Dickson & Son Scottish Gun and Rifle maker opened in 1838 closed 1923. The Building was rebuilt in 1903 to what it is today, A Jacobean styled town house built for the owners Turnbull & Co retailers Opticians and Sporting Goods (fishing equipment). They moved in 1929 to 37 George Street. In 1930 J Woodhouse & Son A furniture and household goods store was here until 1960. The Upper floors were used as a Studio and occupied by a number of Photographers over many years John Menzies 61 Princes Street John Menzies moved from London to Edinburgh at the age of 25 and opened a book shop in 1833 at 61 Princes Street, Edinburgh. With in a few years it became what is now known as a newsagents, being the first to sell The Scotsman newspaper (another business still trading) over the counter. John Menzies is now Menzies Aviation and is still going strong. 48 Princes Street Jenner's Department Store (one of the world's first department stores) The original store opened in 1838 by 2 out of work drapers Charles Jenner and Charles Kennington at 47 Princes Street. The store grew with its popularity of fine goods and over time acquired 2 further premises in Princes Street and 8 in South St David Street to make it the largest department store in the United Kingdom. In early 1860s when Charles Kennington retired Charles Jenner became sole proprietor. The Store was burnt to the ground and rebuilt in 1893 by the same architect that designed the North British Railway Hotel (The Balmoral). The reopening of Jenner’s was in 1895 and was successful as an independent Department store until the House of Fraser group took over in 2005. Not surprisingly the Royal Warrant was awarded to the store in 1911 as the Royals at the time were frequent customers 43 (No.42 - 46) Prince Street As building from the 1770's this block were town houses until 1883 one of the only survivors. In 1800 it changed to commercial on the (ground floor) and offices above. In 1848 No. 43 was Scotland's first temperance Hotel. (Waverley Hotel) Owned by the Cranston family until 1953. It Became the Old Waverley Hotel in 1868 as the Cranston's' opened a further hotel the New Waverley Hotel. In 1883 No.42 - 46 were demolished to what you see today. 30 Princes Street The Forsyth Armillary Sphere Princes Street Edinburgh First steel framed Building in Scotland. An icon of the Edinburgh skyline for over one hundred years. This corner building was the first to be built with a full steel-frame in Scotland date 1906. The corner store features the Forsyth Armillary Sphere which has the signs of the zodiac around the centre with 3 Gilt cherub figures holding the sphere in place. 20 Prince Street No. 19 and No. 20 were rebuilt in 1837 Victorian Town Houses The Royal British Hotel was later Built on the site in 1899 North British Station Hotel (The Balmoral Hotel ) Edinburgh The North British Station Hotel (The Balmoral) opened for Business in 1902 and is positioned next to the Waverley Station Between Waverley Bridge and the North Bridge, which gives direct access to Edinburgh’s old town, The Royal Mile, The Castle and The Palace of Holyrood House (Holyrood Palace). Directly behind the hotel is Calton Hill. The Hotel is at the east end of Princes Street, one of the most famous and picturesque streets in the world. The clock has historically been set 5 minutes fast giving rail travellers the illusion that they are late for their train. The site it stands on is where the first ever hotel in Edinburgh stood. The first hotel being The Crown in 1811 and then changed to Royal Eagle and Prince Regent before being demolished to make way for modernisation and the building of the present hotel. Edinburgh’s Waverley Mall and Waverley Train Station The Waverley Train Station entrance in Princes Street is one of 4 entrances into the Waverley rail Station which is below street level. The Station was built in 1854 and is the main rail station in Edinburgh where you can travel in all direction with a direct line to London with a journey time of just over 4 hours. There are trains to Highlands, Glasgow, the Scottish Borders all points north and south. Original Canal Street Station Register House Multrees Hill The Street's name Multrees Walk is derived from the family Montrays who lived here in the reign James V. The hill taking its name from the family. The hill was on the highest point before Calton hill and was used for hangings and displaying the dead on poles as a deterant to others. Later the area of Multrees Hill, was developed into a small village of workshops prior to the new town and North Bridge being Built. Register House Princes Street Edinburgh Register House can be found at the foot of North Bridge Edinburgh built on what was at the time called Multrees Hill. It was opened in the 1790 and New Register House on the west side of the building in West Register Street was completed in the 1858. The buildings were built to store records of registry (births, deaths and marriages) and is also where the Tartan registry is now housed. Directly outside Register House can be found the Duke of Wellington’s statue which was erected in 1852 in memory of the Battle of Waterloo. Waterloo Place leading to the Calton Hill is also named in memory of the Battle of Waterloo which took place in 1815. Ritchie Clock Edinburgh Circle The clock that can be found on the west side of the Wellington Statue is a clock that was part of the “Edinburgh Circle” a number of electronic clocks placed around the city by Frederick James Ritchie to give the correct time to Edinburgh’s residents. Linlithgow Palace was home to the kings and queens of Scotland. Mary Queen of Scot's birthplace. On the north side a Loch and next to the only remaining building from the early 1400's in Linlithgow. Linlithgow Palace Charles I made an official visit to Linlithgow and stayed in the Palace in 1633. Oliver Cromwell defeated the Scots at Dunbar in 1650 and entered Linlithgow in October occupying Linlithgow Palace. Linlithgow Palace has had many residents Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed here in 1745. The government troops led by the Duke of Cumberland on leaving in pursuit of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite army set the Palace on fire in February of 1746. This was a common practice by the English as Cromwell’s troops set alight Holyrood Palace when leaving in 1650 on their way to Linlithgow. The palace you see today is much as it was left by Cumberland's troops in 1746. Linlithgow Palace Originally built on the site of a great manor house circa 1145 when David I was in residence.  It was King Edward I in 1301 that first built a wooden stronghold around the Manor House and St Michael’s Church. The The stronghold remained in English hands for over 13 years until the English were defeated at Bannockburn by King Robert I in 1314 and he reclaimed the Palace for Scotland. The future saw many English invasion of Scotland the Town and Stronghold were burnt to the ground with only St Michael’s church surviving. The rebuilding of the stronghold took place over a long period by a succession of Kings starting with James I in 1425 and continued by James III, James IV, James V and James VI. The remains of Linlithgow Palace that you can see today were there legacy. The completion of Linlithgow Palace took until circa 1620. James IV left Linlithgow Palace and was never to return to Linlithgow Palace as he led the battle at Flodden and became the last monarch to die in battle (1513). James IV son was born at Linlithgow Palace in April 1512 as was his daughter Mary a few days after James V died in December 1542. James Charles Stuart ; 19 June 1566 – 27 March 1625) was King of Scotland as James VI from 24 July 1567 and King of England and Ireland as James I 24 March 1603 Elizabeth Stuart (19 August 1596 – 13 February 1662) was Electress of the Palatinate and Queen of Bohemia as the wife of Frederick V of the Palatinate. Castlehill Royal Mile Edinburgh Witches Well Castlehill Royal Mile Edinburgh The site of the Witches Well is situated at the top of Castlehill on the west wall of The Tartan Weaving Mill where an iron wall fountain commemorates the place where over three hundred women were burned at the stake, accused of being witches in the 16th Century. There were more Witch burnings carried out at Castlehill than anywhere else in Europe. The wicked head and serene head signify that some used their exceptional knowledge for evil purposes while others were misunderstood and wished their kind nothing but good. The House at the top of Castle Wynd North is Cannonball House which has survived through 3 sieges of Edinburgh Castle in 1650 by Cromwell, in 1689 by William of Orange and by the rebel Jacobite Army in 1745, when General Preston shot Cannon from the Half moon battery at the rebels a cannonball lodge in the wall and remains there to this day. The story is that the cannon ball was carefully placed here by engineers to mark the height above sea-level of the fresh springs which provided Edinburgh with its first piped supply of fresh water, in about 1621. The cannon ball can be seen embedded in the wall above the first-floor window in Castle Wynd North. On the opposite side where the Tartan Weaving Mill is now, was the site of a reservoir that served the well heads in the old town of Edinburgh. In 1991 the reservoir was no longer required and is now conserved as the Edinburgh Tartan Weaving Mill. The Cannonball The cannonball embedded in the wall can be seen from the steps that go down to Johnstone Terrace from Castlehill. Legend has it that in 1745 the castle garrison fired the cannon ball at Bonnie Prince Charlie’s encampment at Dunsapie Loch but missed and hit the house. Scots Whisky Experience Skinner's Close Royal Mile Castlehill Edinburgh Skinner’s Close was the originally Built by the Incorporation of Skinner’s and Furriers and a William Brown Skinner had a house in the close. It was also the site of Fortunes tavern before moving Old Stamp Office Close then to Nicholson Square and finally to St Andrew’s Square. Fortune’s Tavern was a place for the well-heeled and gentlemen of Edinburgh. Named after Dr Boswell the owner circa 1690 and previously known as Lowthian’s Land , but it is said that the Earl of Boswell also resided here. What can be seen on a lintel over a door in the close is the inscription “O LORD IN THE IS AL MI TRAIST” Jollie's Close Royal Mile Castlehill Edinburgh Jollie’s Close named after the land and building in Castlehill owned by Patrick Jollie, and later by Alexander Jollie who was a writer in 1859. Castlehill Royal Mile Palace and Chapel Mary of Guise The first building you will walk past on the Castehill is the site where Mary of Guise had her Palace (pictured). Mary of Guise was the daughter of Antoinette of Bourbon and Claud Count of Guise. Mary of Guise married King James V in 1538. They had a daughter born in Linlithgow Palace in 1542 and at a week old became the Queen of Scotland on her father’s death. Her name was Mary. (Mary Queen of Scots).The building was also used as the Scottish Parliament in 1990s. Marie de Guise died in June 1560. The English and French, agreed the Treaty of Edinburgh. The military forces of both withdrew from Scotland which allowed the Scottish people to govern themselves. A Scottish Parliament was formed in Edinburgh on 10 July 1560, attended by 14 Earls, 6 Bishops, 19 Lords, 21 Abbots, 22 Burgh Commissioners, and over 100 Lairds. On the 24 August the Scottish parliament passed a series of Acts that entirely destroyed the Roman Church in Scotland. The celebration of mass was made illegal and was punishable by many things including death. Palace and Chapel Mary of Guise Castlehill Royal Mile Highland Kirk The Hub The International Festival HQ stands at the foot of Castlehill and at the top of the Lawnmarket. The Hub’s spire is the highest point in central Edinburgh. The building was constructed around 1845 as the Victoria Hall to house the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. In 1929 the Church of Scotland ceased to use the building and it became a temporary home for a variety of congregations. It was named the Highland Tolbooth and then St John’s Church in 1956 and finally closed in the early part of the 1980s. In 1999 the building was transformed into The Hub, offices and a performance space for the Edinburgh International Festival. Candlemaker's Row where the candles of Edinburgh were made to light the house of Edinburgh. Candlemaker Row Grassmarket Edinburgh Candlemaker Row Grassmarket History Candlemaker Row was once the main thoroughfare from the Grassmarket out of Edinburgh linking with Jamaica Street (now Chamber Street) which ended at Blackfriars Abbey (foot of Infirmary Street). Also continuation of Bristo Street. Candlemaker Row winds up from the Grassmarket at Cowgatehead to Greyfriars Place at George IV Bridge and Chamber Street where the Scottish National Museum Stands. At the top of Candlemaker Row is where the statue of Greyfriars Bobby can be found an icon of the City of Edinburgh. A small street of to the east halfway up Candlemaker Row (Merchant Street ) has restaurants, pubs and accommodation and the George IV Bridge can be sent stretching over the street. This street is a dead end. On the west side of Candlemaker Row stands Greyfriars Graveyard, where many famous Edinburgh people are buried and where Ghostly goings on with haunted graves and unexplained noises. Candlemakers' Hall The Ancient Corporation of Candlemakers' Hall stood close to the Greyfriars gates on the west side of Candlemaker Row. This is where the street name originated. The Candlemakers' Hall was built in 1722 and still can be seen today. The Row was where all the Candlemaker of Edinburgh would make candles and the smell was on occasion so strong that residents of Candlemaker Row tried to stop the trade. Greyfriars Bobby Statue Greyfriars Bobby was a Skye terrier who became known in 19th-century Edinburgh after spending 14 years guarding the grave of his owner, John Gray. Bobby himself died in 1872. A year later a statue was erected at the top of Candlemaker Row across from the Greyfriars Kirkyard. There is also a red granite headstone in Greyfriars kirkyard near the gate.
