Gosford House Pleasure Grounds & Policies East Lothian Coast Gosford House Earls of Wemyss and March Longniddry East Lothian Coast The most prominent house in Longniddry is Gosford House on the Gosford Estate owned by the (Charteris Family) Earls of Wemyss and March, who resides here on his 5,000 acre estate. The house was design by Robert Adam and was completed in 1808. The House is available for private or corporate functions and weddings. The are many things to see in the grounds of Gosford and the grounds can be access with a permit for the day from the Bothy Farm Shop. I found that access is easy from the Bothy across from Craigielaw golf course. (free car park). Francis Charteris of Amisfield 6th Earl of Wemyss designed the landscape of the grounds in 1779 the New House foundation stone was laid in 1791. Stables were built in 1790. The Old Gosford House was demolished in 1938 and was used as a holiday home of King James V circa 1505. Outlander the time travel TV series used the Gosford estate for the series. Built in the form of a replica of the Great Pyramid with one entrance. He is the only Weymss occupant to date. Place to Visit Myths Thomas the Rhymer Thomas was a poet and someone that could predict the future. His home was in Earlston in the Scottish Borders. The legend tells that Thomas fell asleep beneath a tree at the foot of the Eildon Hills. When he woke he saw the vision of a shining Lady on a Grey horse, this was the Queen of the Fairies and she entranced him and took him away to Fairyland. He remained there for what he thought had been three days, but was actually 7 years. When he left, the Queen gave him the gift of speaking the truth and told him many prophecies of great events in Scottish history. One of the events he prophesied that there would be a bridge over the River Tweed which would be visible from the Eildon Tree. The Fairy Queen also told Thomas that she would return one day, so if you feel weary rest under the tree and you never can tell what will happen next. Thomas was a real person and lived in the 1200s and his rhymes have been popular for hundreds of years. His rhymers are the earliest examples of Scottish Poetry. James Gregory's Meridian Line St Andrews James Gregory’s Meridian is now marked on South Street by a brass marker across the pavement outside the University of St Andrews’ King James Library together with a plaque on the wall. In 1673, almost 200 years prior to the international adoption of GMT, a Scottish astronomer named James Gregory laid down Europe’s first meridian on the floor of his laboratory at the University of St Andrews. He used this line in conjunction with a metal sight fixed outside one of the windows, which he lined up with a post on the horizon exactly due south, to make astronomical observations. Gregory's Scottish meridian runs almost twelve minutes behind Greenwich meridian time, as it is several degrees to the west which, explained Dr John Amson of St Andrews University, means the world could have been running on a different time scale: 'The world could today be running on STAMT (St Andrews Mean Time) and not GMT. Cairngorms Dark Sky Park Star Gazing - Cairngorms National Park Richmond Hall, Tomintoul The Great Glen Tobar Nan Cean Well of the Heads Near the shore of Loch Oich outside a local shop you can see the Well of the Seven Heads. A fascinating column at the pinnacle a hand holding a large dagger and around it seven stone carved heads. The story goes that on 25th September, 1663 the Chieftain of Clan MacDonald of Keppoch, Alexander MacDonald, and his brother Ranald, were murdered by rivals within their clan. Two years passed with no just handed out for their killers. At that time the Privy Council in Edinburgh, issued letters of “Fire and Sword” against the murderers. Ian Lom and the MacDonald’s of Sleat sought “ample and summary vengeance”. They caught the seven murderers and decapitated them. Ian Lom on his journey, taking the seven heads to Invergarry Castle, he stopped to wash the blood from the heads to make them more presentable to the clan chief of the MacDonald’s of Glengarry. The Heads were then taken to Edinburgh, where they were displayed on Pikes at the Gallows between Edinburgh and Leith. The story has been ratified, when the seven graves with headless bodies were exhumed. In 1812 the monument was erected by the clan chief of the MacDonnell (Clan MacDonnell of Glengarry is a Scottish clan and is a branch of the Clan Donald) to remember the crime and punishment handed out. Lochaber Commando Memorial Dedicated to the men of the original British Commando Forces raised during World War II. Situated around a mile from Spean Bridge, it overlooks the training areas of the Commando Training Depot established in 1942 at Achnacarry Castle. Unveiled in 1952 by the Queen Mother, it is one of Scotland’s best-known monuments, both as a war memorial and as a tourist attraction offering views of Ben Nevis and Aonach Mòr. The Brahan Seer Scottish Nostradamus The Brahan Seer was the Nostradamus of Scotland. He was gifted with the ability of seeing events in the fut ure. His prophecies are still quoted to this day. To have “Second Sight”, or two sights, is an ability to see both into two worlds at the same time. Always thought by the folks of Scotland as an affliction or curse. The Brahan Seer, Coinneach (a variant transcription of the name Kenneth) Mackenzie, was born at Baile-na-Cille on the Isle of Lewis, circa 1600 and lived at the shores of Loch Ussie near to Dingwall in the Scottish Highlands. Legend has it that it was his mother that passed the sight to his son (Coinneach) Kenneth. At a graveyard one night when ghosts were known to roam the earth, his mother encountered the ghost of a Danish Princess on her way back to her grave. In order to allow her to pass back into the grave, Kenneth’s mother demanded that the Princess should pay a tribute, and asked that her son should be given the second sight. The legend goes that later that day, Kenneth found a small stone with a hole in the middle, through which he would look and see visions. The prophetic visions that have come true in the years after his death The Battle of Culloden (1746) He spoke on the moors, and his words were recorded. “Oh! Drum Ossie, thy bleak moor shall, ere many generations have passed away, be stained with the best blood of the Highlands. Glad am I that I will not see the day, for it will be a fearful period; heads will be lopped off by the score, and no mercy shall be shown or quarter given on either side.” He predicted, The lochs in the Great Glen would become one . This became fact when the Caledonian Canal was constructed in 1822. He talked of great black bridle less horses belching fire and steam. This became fact in the 1860’s when railways with steam trains were built throughout the Highlands. The North Sea oil fields were foretold: When Kenneth said “A black rain will bring riches to Aberdeen.” He also spoke of; When Scotland would once again have its own Parliament. But it would only come to pass when men could walk dry shod (without wetting ones boots) from England to France . First men to travel from England and France under the sea. On 1 December 1990, Englishman Graham Fagg and Frenchman Phillippe Cozette The Scottish Parliament reconvened on 12 May 1999 after it was dissolved on the 28th April 1707. He spoke of how fire and water would run beneath the streets of Inverness and into every dwelling. Gas and water pipes were laid down in Inverness circa 1825. Kenneth made a prediction that was to cost him his life. The Earl of Seaforth’s wife Isabella, was said to be one of the ugliest women in Scotland asked Kenneth for news of her husband, who was visiting Paris. Kenneth confirmed that the Earl was in good health but refused to elaborate further. This enraged Isabella, who demanded that he tell her everything or she would have him killed. Kenneth told her that her husband was with another woman, fairer than herself, and he foretold the end of the Seaforth family line. Isabella was so incensed by this that she had (Coinneach) Kenneth seized and thrown head-first into a barrel of boiling tar. The Brahan Seer Stone Slab There is a stone slab near the light house at Chanonry Point on the Moray Firth, near Fortrose, that is said to mark the spot where he died. The inscription reads: “This stone commemorates the legend of Coinneach Odhar better known as the BRAHAN SEER – Many of his prophesies were fulfilled and tradition holds that his untimely death by burning in tar followed his final prophecy of the doom of the House of Seaforth.” The Brahan Seer Celtic Stone A Celtic stone stands at the bridge across the Black Water River at the Rogie Falls, Strathpeffer Ross-shire The Seer said that if the stone fell down three times, then Loch Ussie would flood the valley below so that ships could sail to Strathpeffer. The stone has fallen down twice: it is now set in concrete. Fonab Castle Pitlochry Scotland Once home to the Sandeman Family the leading Port and Sherry wine businesses in the world. In 1790 when George Sandeman (1765-1841), the 25-year-old son of a Scottish cabinetmaker asked his father for money to set up as a wine merchant in London. Fonab Castle beside Loch Faskally and Ben Vrackie, on the once Port-na-Craig Estate which was purchased by George Glas Sandeman in 1890 who built a magnificent Home. History of the name Fonab can be seen as early as the 12th century. Fonab Castle was completed in 1892. The house transferred through the family and in 1915 till the war end in 1918 the house was a British Red Cross hospital. From 1928-46 Colonel and Mrs Kinglake Tower were occupants until they sold Fonab Castle to North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board who renamed it 'Port-na-Craig House'. The House was left by the SHEB abandoned until in 2002, when the Clark family purchased the property and changed the name back to its origin name of Fonab Castle. After many years of conservation and rebuilding the Clark family opened Fonab Castle as a luxury hotel in 2013.

Lawnmarket Royal Mile Attractions Edinburgh The Lawnmarket in the Royal Mile Edinburgh is one of the historic parts of the Royal Mile that starts at the foot of Castlehill and Endsat the High Street. Lawnmarket Attractions Edinburgh (South Side) Johnston’s Close Lawnmarket Edinburgh Johnston’s Close Lawnmarket Edinburgh is the first tenement after the west Bow on the south side of the Lawnmarket in the Royal Mile before Riddle’s Land and has no visible name. However, the Land where a tenement was built was owned by Sir Patrick Johnston Lord provost and knight of the realm in 1700 and a member of parliament for the city in 1700 to 1710. A Close would be named after the owner. Also other names connected with the first Close of the Lawnmarket are Johnston Glover and Edward Johnston junior. The close is now a private residence used for short term lets. Riddle’s Close Riddle's Court Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh Riddle’s (Riddell) Close and Court was originally Built on land owned by George Riddell where the name originates from. The Fishers then sold it to Patrick Maule of the Panmure Family in turn sold it to George McMorran. Then Baillie John McMorran built a house on the land for himself in 1590. He was one of the wealthiest residents of Edinburgh at that time. Inside you can see the different interiors from the 16th – 19th centuries. The story of the building can be seen in the painted ceilings by Patrick Geddes. See where the banquet was held when King James the sixth stayed here with his Queen. It now is home to The Patrick Geddes Centre, Riddle’s Court, 322 Lawnmarket, Edinburgh EH1 2PG and the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust. An inscription above the arch reads: VIVENDO DISCIMUS (living we learn) Riddle's Court Scottish Central Library Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh Scottish Central Library 312-320 Lawnmarket founded by Carnegie UK Trust in 1921 and opened in 1953 after renovations. It was later merged with the National Library of Scotland in 1974. This was part of Fisher’s Land the building built for Thomas Fisher a merchant and first Chamberlain of Edinburgh in 1699. Fisher’s Close Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh Fisher’s Close named from Fisher’s Land owned by Thomas Fisher built a tenement on the land previously known as Hamilton’s Close which Cant’s Land was at the foot of the close Cant was the previous Land owner prior to Fisher. Brodie’s Close Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh William (Deacon) Brodie (28 September 1741 – 1 October 1788), more commonly known as Deacon Brodie lived in Brodie’s Close in the Lawnmarket Edinburgh, where he also had his workshop. William Brodie was a Scottish cabinet maker and Deacon of trades (This is where the name Deacon came from). By day, William Brodie was a respectable tradesman, a Deacon and a member of the Edinburgh Town Council. When evening came he used his skills as a burglar. The money from his crimes was used to maintain his second life, including five children, two mistresses and a gambling habit. He was also a member of the Edinburgh Cape Club founded in the 1700s. The main meeting place was the Isle of Man Arms in Craig’s Close in the Old Town of Edinburgh. A meeting place for the wealthy and nobility where all manner of frivolities would take place. When Deacon Brodie was eventually caught for trying to rob the Royal Mint, he was arrested and sentenced to hang. In 1788 he was taken to the Edinburgh Tolbooth (jail) and hanged by the neck. The Tolbooth is no longer there but is marked with brass cobbles and the Heart of Midlothian. Deacon Brodie’s life inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write the strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. William Brodie designed and erected the gallows in the High Street and was also the first to hang on them. The Gallows are marked with a plaque and cobbles at the corner of George IV Bridge across from David Hume’s Statue. Deacon Brodie’s Grave is in the Apse Church in Chapel Street. Buccleuch Parish Church The Church that stands in Chapel Street at the junction of the Cross Causeway was originally called the Chapel of Ease as St Cuthbert’s in Lothian Road had become too small for its congregation. The congregation\ of St Cuthbert’s had the Chapel of Ease built in 1754 and it opened its door in 1756. The most significant factor is the graveyard as there are a number of important people of the period buried in the graveyard here. Charles Darwin’s uncle of the same name, William Deacon Brodie, (master craftsman and robber), Dr Andrew Duncan (pioneer into mental health) and Dr Thomas Blacklock a minister of the church in a Borders Town was better known as “The Blind Poet”. Due to illness as a baby he lost his sight before he turned 1 year. He lived on the corner of Chapel Street and West Nicholson Street now a public house named (The Blind Poet) where on the walls can be seen many poems written by Dr Thomas Blacklock, The Blind Poet. Buchanan’s Close Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh Buchanan’s Close named from Buchanan’s Land, previously a tenement of the Abbot of Cambuskenneth which burned down in the fire of 1725. Also could have been Walter Willie’s Close. Now a restaurant entrance for the Hotel on George IV Bridge. Lawnmarket Gallows Last Public Execution Plaque and Cobbles The brass plaque on the Wall of the Lothian Chambers Building and brass cobbles at the side of the walkway show the place where the gallows stood and the site of the last man to hang in public in Edinburgh. The site of the gallows is marked by the three brass plates set at the edge of the pavement. The first public execution from the same gallows was on 1 October 1788, a William (Deacon) Brodie. The gallows William (Deacon) Brodie had designed and funded and built the year before. The inscription on the brass plaque reads; Site of the Last Public Execution in Edinburgh. The site of the gallows is marked by the three brass plates set at the edge of the pavement in front of this notice. George Bryce, the Ratho Murderer, was executed here on 21st June 1864, the Last public execution in Edinburgh. Burns Tavern by George Cattermole Burns Tavern previously Dowie’s Tavern in Libberton's Wynd ran from the Lawnmarket to the Cowgate on the eastern side of the George IV Bridge. Libberton’s Wynd was knocked down with the building of George IV Bridge in 1834. Johnnie Dowie was the owner of Dowie’s Tavern until his death in 1817. The new owner changed the name to Burns Tavern a favourite Howff of Robert Burns when he lived across the road in 1786. Also many other notable gents of the time frequented the Tavern. They included Henry Raeburn, Robert Fergusson and Thomas Campbell, David Hume, Christopher North, David Herd and Archibald Younger all now famous names of Edinburgh. Burns Tavern Lawnmarket Wellhead Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh The Lawnmarket Wellhead can be found up from St Giles Cathedral at the junction of the Lawnmarket and the High Street. This is where the residents of the Lawnmarket would collect their fresh drinking water every day. The water was piped from the reservoir at Castlehill to cisterns / wellheads to give the people fresh water. Lawnmarket Nothside Lawnmarket Attractions Edinburgh (North Side) Milne’s Court Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh Milne’s (Mylne’s) Court Was the first open court of its type in Edinburgh, it was built in 1692 by Robert Milne master mason to the King. The buildings were renovated in 1914. The plaque at the entry to Milne’s Court reads; One of the first open squares in old Edinburgh was designed and built by Robert Milne in the late 17th century. The old building which formed the west side of the court was demolished in 1883. The north and south blocks were restored and the east range rebuilt by the university of Edinburgh between 1966 – 1970. This was made possible by generous friends of the university. James's Court Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh James’s Court 493 -495 Lawnmarket Edinburgh Named after the builder James Brownhill. James’s Court was built around 1725. The philosopher David Hume and James Boswell the lawyer and author lived here. The court was destroyed by fire and re-built in 1857. There are three entry’s to the Court the West Entry where Sir John Lauder (Lord Fountainhall lived, The East Entry which was previously named Jardine’s Close after George Jardine who live here and Mid Entry the main entrance to the Court where John Dickson of Hartree lived. James Court is a large area and has a stain Glass window worth seeing and a sculpture of a pigeon in a basket. James Court is also connected to Makars’ Court and the Writers’ Museum. Inscription on Lintel above stain glass window reads Stain Glass Window James Court Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh NISI DOMINUS FRUSTRA (ONLY THE LORD IN VAIN), with date 1860 and initials FC PH which stands for Free Church Presbytery Hall. The images in the glass are of, centre, King James VI, with Sir David Lindsay of the Mount and George Buchanan to his right and left. This window is part of the College and Offices of the Free Church of Scotland in North Bank Street Edinburgh. Gladstone’s Land Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh Gladstone’s Land Lawnmarket Edinburgh is on the north side of the Lawnmarket section of the Royal Mile. Visit a building of the 16th century and experience what life was like in the Old Town by visiting Gladstone’s Land. Purchased in 1631 by a Thomas Gladstane and left to his son William Gladstane surgeon to Colonel Lauder’s regiment. This is a restored tenement building to show the conditions people lived in, in Edinburgh in the 17th Century. Gladstone's Land Robert Burns First Visit to Edinburgh Robert Burns lived in a boarding house of Dr Blacklock's on arrival in Edinburgh, the actual close Robert Burns Lived in was Baxter’s Close, but has not survived (knocked down when George IV Bridge was built. The Plaque above Lady Stair’s Close entrance reads; In a house on the east side of the close Robert Burns Lived during his first visit to Edinburgh 1786. 453 – 463 Lawnmarket Lawnmarket 453 – 463 was built in 1892 5 storeys to front with shops below and 6 to back was part of Geddes’s idea of restoration through modernisation of Lady Stairs and Wardrop’s Court. The 3 sculptured panels of heads with Crafts, (tradesmen's tools) Arts (artists and potters tools) and Academia, (books and sports equipment). Lady Stair's House Lawnmarket Edinburgh The Writers' Museum is housed in Lady Stair’s House which was built in 1662. This was originally called Lady Gray’s Close the widow of Lord William Gray who was the wealthiest merchant of the time. After his death the house was sold to the Earl of Stair and the house was renamed after his wife on his death Lady Stair’s House. The House was purchased in 1895 by the Earl of Roseberry and he had it restored in 1897. He later in 1907 gifted it to the City for use as a municipal museum. Writers' Museum Lady Stair's Close Lawnmarket Edinburgh The Writer’s Museum is dedicated to the lives and work of Scotland's great literary figures. Rare collections include early editions, manuscripts, portraits, photographs, and personal belongings of Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson. Makers Court Slabs The Makars' slabs Blackie House Wardrop’s Court Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh Blackie House Lawnmarket Wardrop’s Court Royal Mile Edinburgh was named after the resident James Stuart Blackie. The ornate window surrounds of his house can be seen in North bank Street on the second floor. Look up above the shops on North Bank Street to see the window with the memorial to James Blackie a University of Edinburgh Professor in Greek and German. He left 250, 19th century Greek books to the University Library which are still being used by students today. He was born in Aberdeen and studied in Germany and Italy. He was the inspiration behind the founding of the Celtic chair of the University of Edinburgh. Wardrop’s Court Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh Lawnmarket Wardrop’s Court Royal Mile Edinburgh is the last court before crossing Bank Street to the final building in the Lawnmarket, Edinburgh High Court. Wardrop Court was previously Middle Baxter’s Close and the John Wardrop built a tenement in the court and called it Wardrop’s Court with the entrance archway Wardrop’s Close. The entrance is noticeable by the Dragons on each corner. The Dragons were sculpted by J S Gibson circa 1890. Blue Dragons Wardrop’s Court Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh The plaque on the right hand side of the court entrance reads; The pair of dragons facing the Lawnmarket were carved by J S Gibson in the 1890s. The pair at the rear were carved in 1911 by Arthur Geddes when he was 16 under the supervision of Alec Miller, a craftsman closely associated with the arts and crafts movement. Arthur was the son of Patrick Geddes, the influential biologist and town Planner who dedicated much of this life to the regeneration of the Old Town. The dragons were restored in 2012 by the City of Edinburgh Council and Edinburgh World Heritage, with support from the Brownlee Old Town Trust and the Geddes family. David Hume Statue Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh David Hume was born on the 26 April 1711 in Edinburgh, he was a Scottish philosopher and historian. He was one of the most important figures in the history of Western philosophy and the Scottish Enlightenment. David Hume attended the University of Edinburgh. Hume achieved great literary fame as a historian when publishing, "The History of England". David Hume lived from 1771 until his death in 1776 at his home in St. Andrew Square in Edinburgh's New Town. The actual site of his home was 21 St David Street. There are two thoughts on how St David’s Street was named firstly after King David I son of Malcolm III and the other after David Hume. David Hume wrote many books including, A Treatise of Human Nature, The Life of David Hume and many more. The Braid Hills and Hermitage stretch from Morningside to Liberton with a golf course Braid Burn. With great Hill and country walks in Edinburgh City. Blackford Hills Hermitage of the Braids . The Blackford Hill is a nature reserve and can provide the whole family with many interesting things to do. There is a children’s play area and a pond that has many different birds (swans, geese and ducks and many more). Explore the hill and visit the Royal Observatory and see the stars in the sky. Follow the Braid Burn for some 2 miles or climb to the top of Blackford Hill (540 feet) for a great view of the city and coast. The main entrance is on Charterhall Road, you can also gain access from Observatory Road or Braid Road. Follow the Braid Burn through to the Hermitage at Morningside where it is a short walk to the Braid Hills, where the Braid Golf Course is situated. The Braid golf course is where the professional golfer Thomas Armour played as a boy before immigrating to America. HERMITAGE HOUSE BRAID HILLS EDINBURGH Old Hermitage House was built circa 1780. The House is now used as Headquarter of the City of Edinburgh Countryside Natural Heritage Service Visitor Centre. The first recorded owner of the area was the son of a Belgian knight called De Brad, in the 12th Century. The forest and hills were a popular place for hunting deer and Boar. The Braid Burn runs through the area. In 1937, the Hermitage was given to the people of Edinburgh city as a public park by the the owner John McDougal . The pillar in front of the house is a memorial to the gift given by him. The park opened to the public in 1938. The Do’cot was a place the occupants of the manor house could get fresh meat. As the pigeons were the source of fresh meat all year round. The walled garden would be stocked with vegetables, potatoes and herbs ENTRANCE BLACKFORD HILL NATURE RESERVE BLACKFORD POND Braid Hills Hotel Edinburgh Attraction The Braid Hills Hotel a historic building. was built in 1886 and has accommodated golfers for over a century. Originally a place for golfer to change (a locker room) with Boxes to rent. In 1894 two window were unveiled with stain glass figures of Ben Sayers and the brothers Hugh and Andrew Kirkaldy. Andrew in 1889 tied for first place in the Open losing to Willie Park Jr. in a playoff. He also was runner up in both 1879 and 1891. Hugh however won the open at St Andrews in 1891. There are also many other Paintings of famous people from Scotland's past in the hotel. Braid Hills Golf Course The Braid Hills golf course opened in 1889 and the first club to be part of the course was Harrison Golf Club founded in 1889 and remain at the course to this day. Western Golf Club founded in 1899 and are also based at the Braid Course was where Tommy Armour first joined a golf club in 1912 and his first competition win was in 1913 on the Braids golf course. Link to Thomas Armour Western Golf George Harrison Archway Braid Hills Edinburgh Sir George Harrison was born in 1812 Lord Provost of Edinburgh 1882-1885 and also founder of Harrisons of Edinburgh 1863 which are now in Exeter and Saville Row London. He died in 1885 and is buried in Warriston Cemetery. The Red sandstone arch next to the Craigmillar Park Golf Course at the foot of Observatory Road was erected in 1888 as the entrance to Blackford Hill, which George Harrison had been instrumental in purchasing as a public park for the city. The Blackford Hill opened as a public park 1884. The archway takes the form of three Roman arches. A large central archway over the road and at each side smaller arches to allow pedestrians. The Arch was built to commemorate Lord Provost George Harrison’s work for the people of the city of Edinburgh. On the centre of the structure at the top is a bronze medallion of George Harrison’s head. Below the medallion is an inscription that reads; IN COMMVNEM MVNICIPII REM DILIGENTIA IN SINGVLOS MVNICIPES BENIGNITAS IN OMNES HOMINES IVSTITIA ET FIDES On the left hand side tablet the inscription reads; BLACKFORD HILL | WAS AQUIRED & OPENED |TO THE PUBLIC BY THE | CITY OF EDINBURGH | 1884 | THE RT HON | SIR GEORGE HARRISON .LL.D | LORD PROVOST. LL.D | WHOSE LIFE WAS DEVOTED | TO THE PUBLIC GOOD | BORN 1812 DIED 1885 Royal Observatory Blackford Hills The first Observatory in Edinburgh was founded in 1776 on Calton Hill by Thomas Short and was demolished in 1850 and moved to Castle Hill, the building where the Camera Obscura is now. The Gothic Tower was used for several years as the site of a new observatory before the City Observatory was built in 1818. In 1822 it became the Royal Observatory and moved to Blackford Hill in 1896 where it still stands. It has been a world leader in astronomy from then to this day. Royal Observatory HILLEND ARTIFICIAL SKI SLOP PENTLAND HILLS The Pentland Hills are a range of hills circa 20 miles long (33Klms) in the south of Edinburgh. Hillend being the beginning or end of the Pentland Hills has had an artificial ski slop open to the public since the 1960s and is the largest dry ski slop in Europe. There are activities for all ages Skiing, Snowboarding and Tubing with floodlights on all slops for evening use and a chairlift and towlines to get you to the top. You can hire equipment and visit the lodge or take the lift to the top for a fantastic view. A great day out for the whole family especially on hot days. Golf Place the main roaad that ends at the Golf Museum, R & A clubhouse and the Old Course St Andrews, There are many attractions and historic places here. GOLF PLACE St Andrews Attractions Golf Place, has a junction with Pilmour Place and North Street and is the main road to The links and Old Course GOLF PLACE St Andrews Attractions Royal and Ancient Golf Club was founded in 1754. The Old Course was made up of 12 holes playing 10 hole twice giving a 22 hole course. In 1764, the R&A decided holes were too short and converted the first four holes into two holes. Which created the now standard 18-hole round of golf. GOLF PLACE St Andrews Attractions Baron Playfair Fountain Lyon Playfair (1818–1898), was born at Chunar, Bengal province, on the 21st of May 1818 - Died 1898 In 1868 he was elected to represent the universities of Edinburgh and St Andrews in parliament, and retained his seat till 1885, from that date until 1892 he sat as member for Leeds. In 1873 he was made postmaster-general, and in the following year, after the dissolution of parliament, was applied to by the incoming Tory government to preside over a commission to inquire into the working of the civil service. Its report established a completely new system, which has ever since been officially known as the “Playfair scheme.” The return of Mr Gladstone to power in 1880 afforded opportunity for Playfair to resume his interrupted parliamentary career, and from that time until 1883 he acted as chairman of committees during a period when the obstructive tactics of the Irish party were at their height. On his retirement from the post he was made K.C.B. in 1892 and was created Baron Playfair of St Andrews, and a little later was appointed lord-in-waiting to the queen. Golf Place and The Links Allan Robertson was born 11th Sept 1815 Died 1st Sept 1859. Allan was born 22 Golf Place corner of The Links St Andrews overlooking the Old Course. His father and Grandfather were both Old Course caddies, also famous golf ball makers. Allan quickly took to the game and is said never to have been beaten in a singles match. Allan was one of the World’s First, Professional golfers. He played many matches for money, against the well-known golfers of the new era Tom Morris, Willie Dunn Snr professional golfer of Musselburgh. Allan Robertson was the first golfer to score under 80 (79) on the Old Course and is said to be the first to use a lofted iron club for approach shots. He also redesigned the Old Course installing the first double greens. Allan is buried in St Andrews Cathedral cemetery. The Links St Andrews THE LINKS St Andrews Attractions The Links runs from Golf Place parallel with the 18th fairway of the Old Course The Links Swilcan Bridge The most famous bridge in golf on the 18th fairway of the Old Course at St Andrews. The Swilcan Bridge has been used to cross the Swilcan Burn since 1835. Previously called the Golfers Bridge This was for several hundred years the only way of crossing the burn. THE LINKS St Andrews Attractions New Golf Club, St Andrews Tom Morris Plaque The New Club was founded in 1902 as the only club at the time was for the members of the R & A who were the gentry. This was a club started by local 8 businessmen. Tom Morris was the first honorary member of the New Club. He unfortunately had a fall in the club which was fatal, on the 24th May 1908.
