The Mound Bank Street, North Bank Street Mound Place, St Giles Street Edinburgh The Mound Edinburgh The Mound in the centre of Edinburgh links the Old Town with the New Town. The Mound was originally the excavations from the building of the New town piled up in the middle of the area that had been Nor Loch. This eventually provided a further access to and from the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh. At the foot of the mound is access to West Princes Street Gardens and opposite can be found the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and slightly further up the mound is the National Gallery of Scotland. On the corner with Market Street stands a statue in memorial to the Black Watch. On mound Place is the New Library which was built in 1846. The Mound then joins North Bank Street and the Bank Street before Joining the Royal Mile. ROYAL SCOTTISH ACADEMY OF ART MOUND EDINBURGH The oldest and most prestigious academy of contemporary art in Scotland. The Royal Institution for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts in Scotland (RI) was founded in 1819. The Academy was founded in 1826 by eleven artists meeting in Edinburgh. Originally named the Scottish Academy, it became the Royal Scottish Academy on being granted a royal charter in 1838. The Royal Scottish Academy has been in the building on the corner of the Mound and Princes Street since 1911 The Academy is active in the promotion of young artists from Scotland's Colleges of Art and Architecture and takes a lead role in promoting living artists in Scotland. Royal Scottish Academy MOUND PRECINCT is a Large open air paved space at the foot of the Playfair steps which is used for street performers (jugglers, acrobats fire eaters etc.) during the summer. With its location in the centre of Princes Street it is an ideal place to arrange to meet before touring or visiting the galleries that surround the square. On the left of the picture is the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and at the back, the National Gallery of Scotland. National Gallery of Scotland Mound Edinburgh The National Gallery of Scotland was opened in 1859 on the Mound and is now home to Scotland's greatest collection of European paintings and sculpture from the Renaissance to Post-Impressionism. It also includes a comprehensive collection of the major names in Scottish art. National Gallery BLACK WATCH ON THE MOUND The 11-foot high bronze statue of a Black Watch soldier commemorates over 200 members of the Regiment who were killed or wounded in the South African War of 1900-02. The Black Watch, the oldest Highland Regiment, was formed by General Wade in 1739 to police the Highlands at a time when many of the clans harboured pro-Jacobite sympathies. THE ASSEMBLY HALL (NEW COLLEGE) MOUND PLACE EDINBURGH The Assembly Hall was built in 1846 as a Theological college, now the New College and a home for the Church of Scotland in 1929. The General Assembly is held here annually in May. This is also where in 1989 the majority of the Scottish members of parliament signed a document to claim the right for Scotland to have an independent parliament. The Assembly hall was used as a debating hall of the Scottish Parliament for 5 years between 1999 -2004. The Assembly Hall has also been used by the Edinburgh International Festival for many years. The Spire behind the Assembly Hall is The Hub on the Castlehill. In the main courtyard of the New College stands a statue of John Knox the leader of the protestant reformation and founder of the Presbyterian Church. Born in 1514 and died in 1572 his grave is in the car park of St Giles Cathedral. WRITERS' MUSEUM LADY STAIR'S PLACE MOUND ENTRANCE is in Lady Stair’s House which was built in 1662 in Lady Stair's Close, Lawnmarket, Royal Mile, Edinburgh, (named after Elizabeth Countess Dowager of Stair, a fashion icon of her time). Lady Stair’s House is dedicated to the lives and work of Scotland's great literary figures. Rare collections include early editions, manuscripts, portraits, photographs and personal belongings of Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Robert L Stevenson. On paving stones and steps up from the mound and down from the Lawnmarket you will find inscriptions and verses. JAMES STUART BLACKIE NORTH BANK STREET EDINBURGH Look up above the shops on North Bank Street to see the window with the memorial to James Blackie a University of Edinburgh Professor in Greek and German. He left 250, 19th century Greek books to the University Library which are still being used by students today. He was born in Aberdeen and studied in Germany and Italy. He was the inspiration behind the founding of the Celtic chair of the University of Edinburgh. THE BANK MUSEUM BANK STREET EDINBURGH Opened in 2006 telling the story of money. The Bank of Scotland is the second longest surviving bank in the United Kingdom and was established just 1 year after the Bank of England in 1695 by a Scotsman, William Paterson. The Bank of Scotland was founded by John Holland an Englishman. Bank Museum Dr Robert Philip Bank Street Edinburgh The worlds’ first tuberculosis dispensary was opened in Bank Street Edinburgh by Dr Robert Philip in 1887. Sir (Dr) (Professor) Robert Philip pioneered the management, prevention, detection and treatment of tuberculosis (TB). On the wall in Bank Street a blue Plaque reads "Near this place in 1887, Dr Robert Philip founded a tuberculosis dispensary, the first clinic in the world dedicated to fighting a disease of which he foretold Man's eventual mastery. That vision has brought hope to many lands." Tuberculosis (TB) was the biggest killer in the UK by the middle of the 19th century and due to Sir Robert Philip it has been almost eradicated. Sir Robert Philip died at home in 9 Palmerston Road, in the Grange area of Edinburgh, on the 25th January 1939. Simpson was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1863. On 4th November, 1847 Simpson first used chloroform. It was first used as an anaesthetic to help ease the pain during childbirth. Queen Victoria used chloroform during the delivery of Prince Leopold in 1853. Simpson was the first man to be knighted by the Scottish Court of the Lord Lyon for services to medicine. "Victo Dolore" (pain conquered) is the inscription on Simpson’s coat of arms. Simpson died at his home in Edinburgh at the age of fifty-eight. A burial spot in Westminster Abbey was offered to his family, but they declined and instead buried Simpson closer to home in Warriston Cemetery, Edinburgh. On the day of Simpson's funeral, a Scottish holiday was declared, including the banks and stock markets, with over 100,000 citizens lining the funeral cortege on its way to the cemetery, while over 1,700 colleagues and business leaders took part in the procession itself. Royal College of Physicians 8-9 Queen Street Edinburgh The Royal College of Physicians was given its Royal status in 1681 by Charles II and their first meeting hall was in Fountain Close in 1704. It moved to George Street before the present building No.9 foundation stone was laid in 1844 and No 8 was purchased in 1868 this building was one of the first to be built in Queen Street in 1774. The three statues are of Hygeia (daughter of Asclepius and Goddess of good health), Asclepius (Greek God of medicine and son of Apollo), and Hippocrates (ancient Greek physician). Hygeia (Daughter of Asclepius) (Goddess of good health) Hygiene Greek goddess of good health was a daughter and helper of the god of medicine Asclepius,and a friend to the goddess Aphrodite. Mary Erskine School Mary Erskine donated a sum of money from her husband’s estate to the Company of Merchants of Edinburgh, to have a school built to educate the poor children of Edinburgh Merchant families. The School (Hospital as they were called) named Merchant Maiden Hospital first opened in the Cowgate in 1694. It then moved to new premises on the corner of Bristo Street (now Bristo Place) and Lothian Street in 1706. As it grew it moved again to new premises in 1818 at the Lauriston area at the foot of Archibald Place. In 1871 moving once more to larger premises in the New town Queen Street and changing its name to Edinburgh Educational Institution for Young Ladies. It was renamed in 1889 to The Edinburgh Ladies’ College. New Town Edinburgh Thistle Street Edinburgh the first house was built in Edinburgh's New Towns at the north west edge of St Andrews Square named Rose Court, built in 1767. It is now Thistle Court and Still in use today. Thistle Street Edinburgh New Town Attractions Thistle Street was one of the streets in the design plans of the New Town of 1759. It was to run parallel with Princes Street, George Street, and Queen street. Between George Street and Queen Street named after the Scottish emblem the Thistle of Scotland. However, the two architects that completed the New Town requested streets to be named after them and it was decided to reduce the length of Thistle Street to enable Mr Hill and Mr Young a street each thereafter Thistle street becoming from the west end, Young Street, Hill Street, then the remainder remaining Thistle Street as it is today. Cockburn Street Edinburgh New Town a winding street that joins Edinburgh's Royal Mile at the High Street to Waverley Bridge Edinburgh's main Rail Station. With shops, pubs, restaurants, cafes and accommodation. Cockburn Street Edinburgh (Lord Cockburn Street) Lord Cockburn Street was built as an access to the Waverley Bridge Road at Waverley Rail Station from the High Street near to the Tron Kirk. The Plans for Cockburn Street were submitted over a lengthy period circa 1850 and was finally completed in 1859. Lord Cockburn Street was named after Lord Cockburn who was one of the most respected Gentlemen of Edinburgh. He Died in 1854 and a Carved Stone of his Head and Shoulders are above No1-3 Cockburn Street now the Edinburgh Military Tattoo Offices. Lord Henry Cockburn The Edinburgh Military Tattoo Office was originally built as a hotel (The Cockburn hotel built circa 1862). The carving above door of a head is Lord Cockburn with gilt writing MacPherson on lintel. (Previous owner) Lord Cockburn was a conservationist and saved many important buildings in Edinburgh. The street is named after him. Lord Henry Cockburn died in 1854 at the age of 74. A conservationist the Cockburn Association which was established in 1875 was named after Lord Henry Cockburn. A statue of Lord Henry Cockburn stands in the north-east corner of Parliament Hall in the High Street Edinburgh. When Cockburn Street was built (circa 1859) it cut through many old closes, which evidence of can be seen in Old Fleshmarket Close where the smallest pub in Edinburgh can be found on the north side of the severed close. Ramsay Garden named after Alan Ramsay is a historic building seen from castlehill on the Royal Mile and the castle esplanade. Ramsay Lane from Castlehill leads to Ramsay Garden. Barnton at one time was outside of Edinburgh and became a commuting village with Cramond. Now it is a area of mainly large detached houses. Not far from Cammo on the other side of the main route Barnton attractons, the oldest established Golf Club in the world. Barnton and Cammo Edinburgh Barnton Edinburgh The Royal Burgess Golfing Society (The Burghers) 1735 The Royal Burgess Golfing Society near Cramond the Oldest Golf Club in the world. There were six golf clubs that played their golf at Bruntsfield Links of which The Burghers were one, they were the first to be instituted in 1735 the club house the Old Golf Tavern was used by all clubs. circa 1780 the society became known as the Edinburgh Burgess Golfing Society and by Royal Edict dated 30 September 1929 His Majesty King George V commanded that the name be changed to The Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh. The Club moved to its present home at Barnton in 1895 designed by a Musselburgh Golfer Willie Park Jnr who won the open Championship in 1887 and 1889. His family were golfers, his father Willie Park Snr won the first Open in 1860 and also in 1863, 1866 and 1875 and his uncle Mungo Park won in 1874 The Royal Burgess Golfing Society Instituted in 1735. The Plaque shows golfers of the original Burghers at Bruntsfield Links where they first played for a silver putter. The Burghers now The Royal Burgess is the oldest golf club in the world. The first Golf Club House being Ye Old Golf Tavern. Barnton Quarry (The Secret Bunker) Presently under construction to be a visitor site The Secret Bunker can be found just off Clermiston Road North there is a small car park at the side of the road and it is a short walk to the Bunker. This was one of the largest underground military installations in the UK. The purpose of the bunker was to house a radar detection unit and Royal Air Force fighter response command protecting the UK from Russian long range nuclear threats. This facility was a national secret installation for many years. There were 3 other similar sites in the UK Kelvedon Hatch (London), Shipton (Yorkshire), Bawburgh (Norfolk) These 4 sites were the top of the Radar command. Cammo Cammo Edinburgh Cammo House Ruins Nature Reserve Edinburgh Cammo House was built in the early part of the 1690s by a John Menzies a wealthy businessman and was later sold to Sir John Clerk in 1710. Sir John Clerk with an interest in landscaping set out the gardens of Cammo house over the next several years. The house is now a ruin and the lands are now open to the public. Things to look for are the ruin of Cammo House, the said to be oldest and largest Ash tree in Edinburgh, the East Lodge, Cammo Tower, The Cammo Stane and if very lucky the Ghosts of Cammo House. Fenton Barns Attractions East Lothian Fenton Barns is a family working farm, with a retail village. There are many commercial outlets which include a farm shop and cafe. The shop has many locally produced goods, with the cafe providing great meals and snacks. There is also a mixture of small local businesses. There are rental units of all sizes available to rent for small businesses or workshops. Fenton Barns is surrounded in history. With castles, museums many other villages and towns all close by. If out for the day exploring by foot bike or car Fenton Barns is a great rest spot for food drink and retail therapy. Places close by include Gullane, Dirleton, Drem East Fortune and Athelstaneford. Fenton Tower Kingston East Lothian Fenton Tower derives its name from the lands it stands on lands of ‘Fentoun’. “During the reign of King David I of Scots (1124-1153).The present Fenton Tower was built circa 1575 by the Carmichael family who were the land owners at the time. Built with protect in mind as it is positioned to see in all directions. In 1591 King James VI of Scotland took refuge here. With the coming of Cromwell in 1650, Fenton Tower was attacked and left in ruins as many castles were. It remained unused until it was purchased in 1998 and the owners rebuilt the tower to its former glory to historic specifications. Next - Garvald

Garvald Attractions East Lothian Garvald Village Garvald village is in a valley beside the Papana Water. This picture postcard village built almost entirely from red sandstone dates back to the early 12th century. Walk around the village and take in the scenery. The church and grounds are worth the visit. The School and school house built circa 1840 can be still seen in the village (now private residence). Garvald and Barra Parish Church Gavald Kirk was built early 12th century and the north-west corner of the church is original. There is a sundial date 1633 and the north aisle is circa 1670. The Kirk was renovated and extended in 1829 adding Gothic windows and a Belfry Stoneypath Tower East Lothian Stoneypath Tower built circa 1350 by the Lyles family prior to moving to Duchal Castle, stands over the Paple water on the outskirts of Garvald and Whittingehame. George Lyle occupant of Stoneypath circa 1460. Stoneypath was the ancient seat of the Lyle family circa 1460. The Tower passed from the Lyle family to the Douglas family, the most powerful family in Scotland. It was attacked on several occasions and also changed hands through many of the most prominent families in Scotland including the Hamilton’s and Seton family. The Tower has stood in ruin for over 200 years and after many years has been restored to its former glory. The plaque tells more of the history. Next - Gifford Village

Selkirk Mercat Cross Walter Scott’s Court Room Court House Museum where Sir Walter Scott, was Sheriff for over thirty years. Visit the former court room, containing displays of Walter Scott’s long associations with the area. Other displays that can be seen are of the Explorer Mungo Park 1771 – 1806. West African exploration 1796. A statue erected in his honour 1859 can be seen in the main Street of Selkirk where he was born. Also James Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd a Scottish poet, novelist and essayist 1770-1835. Fletcher Monument Fletcher was the only one of circa 80 men from Selkirk who returned from the Battle of Flodden Field after joining the army of King James IV (The last monarch to die in battle). Selkirk Common Riding an annual event that marks the day in 1513 with the “Casting of the Colours”, when one Selkirk man returned home with an English banner after the worst defeat of a Scottish army in history The Fletcher Monument erected in 1913 stands in front of the Victoria Halls (built 1895). The brass plaque reads "This monument, embodying the spirit of the Selkirk tradition and erected to commemorate the Four Hundredth anniversary of the battle of Flodden Field, was unveiled by the Earl of Rosebury, KG, KT. Andrew Lusk Allan Provost,1913". Three Brethren A trio of large stone built cairns circa 10ft (3mtrs) high, dating back over 400 years, marking the boundaries of Yair, Philiphaugh and Selkirk which come together at the top of a broad hill in the Yair Hill Forest. Selkirk 'Silver Arrow' Each year, the Queen’s Body Guard for Scotland, The Royal Company of Archers, (in 1704 was granted a Royal Charter by Queen Anne) compete for the Selkirk Silver Arrow, a competition dating back to 1660. The Auld Kirk in Selkirk is where William Wallace, (Braveheart), was proclaimed ‘Guardian of Scotland’ in 1298 after he defeated the English at Stirling Bridge during the Scottish Wars of Independence the previous year. This is also the burial ground of President Roosevelt’s family. Lajos Kossuth 1802 -1894 This plaque is to commemorate the enthusiastic reception and hospitality given by the people of Selkirk to the above named former Governor of Hungary, who was officially invited to lecture to an assembled audience of townspeople on the 12th December 1856, from the balcony of this hotel and in other locations in the town. Commissioned by a Hungarian originated citizen of Selkirk and his family, on the centenary of his Excellency's death. Mungo Park "Explorer" Mungo Park, the pioneering African Explorer, was born in 1770 in the nearby Yarrow Valley was once apprenticed to a local doctor in Selkirk and went on to marry his daughter. The Battle of Philiphaugh The Battle of Philiphaugh part of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms between 1639 and 1653 in the Kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland rued by one king, Charles I. Philiphaugh was the site of a bloody battle between the Covenanters (supporters of a Scottish Presbyterian faith) and the Royalists (supporters of the Crown) “King Charles I” on the 13th September 1645. The Covenanters lead by General Sir David Leslie (who signed the National Covenant of Scotland in 1638) destroyed the army of the Royalist army lead by The Marquis of Montrose (previously a Covenanter commander in 1639 changing his allegiance to fight for the King). The Covenanters were 6000 strong and the Royalists 1500 made up of foot soldiers and cavalry. The Battle was the decisive battle of the Civil War in Scotland. Scott’s were ancestors to the Buccleuch family. The First Duke of Buccleuch came about when Anna Scott married King Charles II’s son James, who was given the title Duke of Monmouth and 1st Duke of Buccleuch in 1663. Robert Scott and Elspeth Murray were married in Aikwood in 1602 see the marriage stone on the tower. Sir Walter Scott has mentions of it in many of his novels.
