The Duddingston Village Edinburgh History has the oldest pub Sheep Heid easy way up Arthur Seat, nature reserve, Duddingston Loch and Bonnie Prince Charlie DUDDINGSTON VILLAGE EDINBURGH HISTORY & ATTRACTIONS DUDDINGSTON LOCH at Dodin’s Village (Duddingston Village) dates back to the 1100s and replaced Treverlen the name of the land owners of the area. The name Duddingston is said to come from the Norman Knight Dodin de Dodinestun who settled in the area. An earlier Bronze Age settlement / lake village may lay buried beyond the car park next to the gate. Duddingston Loch is a nature reserve with swans, geese,ducks and otters. It was previously used for ice skating curling and boating. There is a famous painting by Sir Henry Raeburn of a minister ice skating on the Duddingston Loch. SHEEP HEID INN The Causway, Duddingston Village known originally as Dodin Village. It is said that a drinking house has been on the site since the 1300s and Bonnie Prince Charlie may have drank here before the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745. There is no definite proof of how old the pub is or how it got its name but Royalty played skittles in the back yard and a bowling alley was built in 1870. A club founded in 1882 still exists and plays once a week. A gift given to the landlord in 1580 by King James VI was a rams head snuff box, which is now in Dalmeny House and a copy is behind the bar. The village was known for the slaughter of sheep and the use of the heads for soup (powsowadie) a local broth. THE NIGHT BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF THE END Camped around Dunsapie Loch on Arthur Seat the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie awaited instructions from the war council being held in the house pictured below in Duddingston Village on the night of the 19 September 1745 before the Battle of Prestonpans took place. The Battle at Prestonpans was an monumental victory for the Jacobite army over the English army of red coats. The Jacobite army lead by Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward Stuart) went on to battle their way as far as Derby, before turning back with the might of the English army in chase. After 7 months of battles, the end came in just 20 minutes at the battle of Culloden where the English wiped out the Jacobite's and ended the Stuarts regaining the throne, Bonnie Prince Charlie fled to Skye and then into Europe. The Canongate was once seperate from Edinburgh. See all the attractions and history on the the northside of the Canongate. Where the Queen goes to church(Canongate Kirk) and where Golfersland stood. A Fudge Factory and Old White Horse Close. Canongate North Edinburgh Attractions Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh is named after the canons of Holyrood Abbey and the Scots word gait meaning “road”. The Canongate was a small district outside the Edinburgh City Walls. The lands and village of Herbegare, where the Abbey of Holyrood was built was given to the monks by King David I in 1128 and a road that extended from Herbegare, to the St John's Cross, this was known as Canon gait. Houses soon were built on both sides of the road and in time the name of Herbegare was lost and the name Canongate was taken in its place. The Canongate had walls around the town which was to define the town with gates that were closed at night (Watergate). This however was no protection against invaders and the Canongate area was burnt to the ground on several occasions first by Richard II circa 1380 then 1544, 1642, 1649, and finally by Cromwell and his army in 1651. Leith (Leytht) Wynd Cranston Street Edinburgh Leith Wynd or Leytht Wynd (1514) was a road that started on the North Side of the Nether Bow Gate at Cranston Street and continued to the back of the Canongate (Calton Road) near to the entrance of Waverley Station on Calton Road and was used by the coaches to London. I have included Leith Wynd in the Close’s of the Royal Mile as I felt that it gives an idea of how difficult it was to get into Edinburgh prior to the New Town and the draining of the Nor’ Loch. From the Head of the Canongate Leith Wynd traveled down to the foot of Caton Hll then west around the calton Hill to joint leith street. The Canongate Christian Institute The Canongate Christian Institute at 2 Cranston Street, Edinburgh, was a Christian mission opening circa 1878. This was a place of worship for the old town. It held gospel meetings and services until its closure in 1930. Mid Common Close Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh Mid Common Close is one of three closes at the head of the Canongate. The other two were west common close and east common close neither survive. This was previously named Vietch’s Close. West Common Close was High School Close and East Common Close was Logan’s Close each of the close’s gave common access to the High School. These closes were like small communities in very narrow streets with up to 100+ family homes each of the closes were previously known by other names as the owners would dictate the close name. Morocco Land Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh The sculpture of a Moor faces forward with arms down at his sides supporting a blank shield. The sculpture was moved from its original position on an adjoining building when the present building was being redeveloped. The story of how the land (building) was named is that a young man Andrew Grey, an Edinburgh resident, was sentenced to death for rioting. He fled to Morocco and after a number of years made his fortune and returned home and was involved in saving the life of the daughter of the Provost who was perilously ill with the plague (presumably for this his sentence was commuted). He ended up marrying her and they made their home in the building where the little statue was erected. This came to be known to the locals as “Morocco Land”. New Street Royal Mile Edinburgh New Street or Young Street as it was first named after Dr Thomas Young who owned the Land. The access at the Canongate was private with chains and locks to prevent unwanted visitors to the street. In 1786 it was deemed a public street but was still chained until 1819 when the chains were taken away and access was available to all from the Canongate to Back of the Canongate North or now Calton Road. At the foot of New Street is a Doorway (Jacob’s ladder) to steps that will take you to Regent Road close to the Burns Memorial and the Calton Hill. The east side of New Street was the New Street Gasworks which was established in 1818. One of the first Gas Works in Britain. New Street was previously called Young Street (circa 1760) after Dr Thomas Young Professor of Midwifery at University of Edinburgh who lived on the east side at the Canongate junction. New Street was where the wealthy lived in detached houses with gardens. Names such as Dr Young, Lord Kames, Sir David Dalrymple, Lord Hailes, Lady Betty Anstruther, Miss Ramsay, daughter of the poet Allan Ramsay. This was a private street which had security chains attached to post to stop traffic. It became a public right of way in 1819 giving access from Canongate back of Canongate (Calton Road). Sibbald Walk Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh Sibbald Walk was completed in 2017 with renovation to the housing and land which is now a Square with a Marketplace. Keeping with the tradition of the area. Named after Robert Sibbald who was the inspiration behind the Physic Garden (Royal Botanic Gardens) which lay at the foot of Leith Wynd and Calton Road not far from the foot of New Street Shoemakers’ Close Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh Shoemakers’ Close is an old house built in 1725, four stories high in which the shoemakers used to hold their meetings. Over the entrance door is the shoemakers’ coat of arms cut in stone, a crown and rounding knife. Inscribed on the tablet is; 1725 blessed is he | that wisely do | TH the poor man’s | case consider Bible Land (1677) Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh Bible Land is the name given to the land (building) on the Canongate which has the sculpture of an open book above the front door which contains part of Psalm 133 “Behold how good a thing it is and how becoming well together such as brethren are in unity to dwell”. There is also the following text “It is an honour for men to cease from strife. Bible Land was built for the Incorporation of Cordiner’s in 1677. The Cordiner’s were leather craftsman who were incorporated in 1544. Gladstone’s Court Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh Gladstone Court was previously Bowling Green Close as a Bowling Green was through the archway. Later Magdalene Asylum was built where the Bowling Green was. Magdalene Asylum was for fallen women of Edinburgh. Edinburgh Royal Magdalene Asylum was founded in the Canongate in 1797. This was in Magdalene’s Entry. Magdalene Asylum then moved to the west of Edinburgh in 1842. (Springwell House). Magdalene’s Entry was renamed in honour of the Prime Minister William E Gladstone who was the Prime Minister of Britain on four occasions. There is also a memorial statue in Coates Crescent Garden and a street on the south side near The Meadows (Gladstone Terrace). Look for the concrete stone with Old Well inscribed on it. This is where the people of the Court would get there water for drinking and washing. More on Gladstone Memorial Old Tolbooth Wynd Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh Old Tolbooth Wynd was named after the Tolbooth where tolls were paid for road use and other charges. First mention of the Tolbooth of the Canongate was in 1477. It was later extended in 1591 and was the municipal centre and Jail for the residents of the Canongate. The People’s Story museum opened in 1989 telling the history of the people and area. The inscription on the wall reads; S.L.B (Sir Lewis Bellenden) PATRIAE ET POSTERIS (Country and Posterity). The triangle above the Canongate coat of arms shield with date 1128 inscription reads; James VI | IVSTICIA ET PIETAS VALIDE SVNT PRINCIPIS ARCES ( Justice and Compassion are the Fortification of King) Tolbooth Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh The Tolbooth is a late 15th century building. It served only the Burgh of Canongate. A bronze wall tablet can be seen with the Canongate coat-of-arms and date 1128. The Tolbooth was the town’s jail and administrative centre. The western part of the Royal Mile the High Street was in Edinburgh and had its own Tolbooth which is no longer there. Its place is marked by the Heart of Midlothian. You can find a Tolbooth in most towns to this day but none are used as jails. The large bronze plaque is a memorial who died in the world wars. The People’s Story Museum Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh The Canongate Tolbooth is home to The People’s Story Museum, telling the story all about the people who have lived in Edinburgh from its beginning. People's Story Canongate Kirk Dunbar’s Close and Gardens Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh Dunbar’s Close was named after the owner of the tenement at that time, an Edinburgh lawyer David Dunbar. Take a walk through Dunbar’s Close for a look at a 17th century style garden with views of Calton hill, the Nelson Monument and Burns memorial in the background. On your right of the gates as you enter are Cadell House and Panmure House, the latter is where Adam Smith lived and died (1772-1790). Dunbar’s Close and Gardens Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh The Mushroom Trust Plaque reads; Dunbar Close Garden was laid out in the character of an Edinburgh 17th century garden in 1977 when it was donated by The Mushroom Trust of the City of old Edinburgh. Panmure Close Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh Panmure House, is where the Jacobite Earl of Panmure had his town house and later the Countess of Aberdeen occupied the house before Adam Smith lived and died here from 1772 till 1790. Adam Smith is buried in the Canongate Kirk Graveyard and his statue is in the High Street near to St Giles Cathedral. The poppies on the gates were to show that this was the access to the Lady Haig Poppy factory between 1931– 1965. Access to Panmure house is at 115 Canongate Little Lochend Close. Cadell House Panmure Close CanongateEdinburgh William Cadell was born in 1668 and died in 1728. He was an Edinburgh merchant and freeman of Edinburgh. William Cadell’s grandson was a founder of the Carron Company Iron Works of Falkirk. The largest iron works of its type in Europe for circa 100 years. Cadell house was restored and converted to apartments in 1954. Panmure House Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh Panmure House is now a museum, visitor attraction. The house was built circa 1685 for the Earls of Panmure as a town house with their main residence in Panbride Angus. Adam Smith purchased the property in 1776 after the death of his mother who he lived with in Kirkcaldy (this is where he wrote "The Wealth of Nation") from 1767. He lived in Panmure House till his death in 1790. Panmure House Lochend Close Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh Lochend Close has two entrances and at one time there was Little Lochend Close and Lochend Close Lochend comes from being at the end of Calton Crags and the Nor Loch which was at that time in the parish of Restalrig. This name was given by the owner of the house at the end of the close William Ferguson of Loch end Restalrig. Also entrance to Panmure House. Reid’s Court Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh Reid’s Court takes its name from Edinburgh brewer and magistrate Andrew Reid who lived here in the 1770s. The house was first the home to Lord Advocate Sir John Nisbet and was built in 1624. It is now the Manse where the minister of the Canongate Kirk lives. Campbell’s Close Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh Campbell’s Close previously Rae’s Close. Campbell’s Close was named after George Campbell Bailie of the Canongate. Known as Campbell’s Land there were many famous lived here Archbishop of St Andrews Arthur Ross and the 13th and 14th Earl of Morton. Brown’s Close Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh The name of the Close comes from a Joseph Brown who was a baker and had premises further up the Canongate. He purchase Paterson’s Land (Golfer’s Land) which was a tenement and land from John Paterson who built the tenement with proceeds from a Golf match. Golfer's Land (Brown's Close) Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh Brown’s Close or Golfer’s Land is a tenement building purchased with winnings from a 4 ball golf match between Baillie John Paterson and The Duke of York (King James VII) and two English noblemen. During the 1600s two English noblemen attached to the court of the Duke of York (to be King James VII) were challenged by the Duke to a golf match on Leith Links. The Duke’s partner was shoemaker John Paterson a descendent from a long line of golfers. The English noblemen were beaten and the Duke rewarded Paterson with the stakes that had been played for, which enabled Paterson to build a tenement building which he called Golfer’s Land. The building is no longer on the site as it was demolished in 1960. In 1664 Charles I (The Duke’s father) bestowed on the Duke of York the American provinces previously controlled by the Dutch now renamed in his honour, New York. The Duke succeeded to the crown in 1685, and died in 1701. In 1688, his wife Queen Mary gave birth to a son who was later to be father to Bonnie Prince Charlie. Golfer's Land Plaque On this site stood the tenement known as Golfer’s | Land. It was built in the 17th Century by the bailie John | Paterson. The golfer with, it is said, his share of | the stake from a Golf match when he partnered | The Duke of York (afterwards James VII) against two | English noblemen. The bronze coat of arms is a | copy of a stone carving which was built into | Golfers Land. Another panel with Latin inscription | by Dr Pitcairne, which may be seen in the courtyard | to the rear. Links the Paterson family with the | building and the name of golf. The Plaque with the coat of arms that shows a hand holding a golf club above a helmet and shield with three stars and three Swans the Paterson Coat of arms and an inscription that reads: (Top) Far and Sure (Foot) I HATE NO PERSON, an anagram of "John Patersone." Whitefoord House Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh Whitefoord House ids part of Galloway's Entry where the Earl of Winton’s’ town mansion, better known as Lord Seytoun’s lodging in the Canongate. In front of the mansion, in which Sir Walter Scott lays some of the scenes of the “Abbot”. There was a tavern built chiefly of lath and plaster, known as “Jenny Ha’s”. The landlady was famous for her claret. Gay, the poet, is said to have frequented the tavern during his short stay in Edinburgh. It was a custom for the merchants and distinguished gentlemen of Edinburgh to adjourn after dinner parties, to enjoy claret and merrymaking at Jenny Ha’s. Forsyth’s Close Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh Forsyth’s Close was a Coach Maker’s Yard owned by Alexander Forsyth who purchased the land in 1719 and passed on to his son also Alexander who was a coach maker in London. Forsyth’s Close now gives entry to Whitefoord House. Galloway’s Entry Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh John Galloway owned land and had a stable, Alexander Galloway also had Stables. The land of Forsyth’s Close and Galloway’s Entry with a now missing Ramsay’s Close all seem to have had stables on the land with two main Houses Callendar House to the west and Whitefoord House on the east both now veterans residence Whitefoord House being the site where the Earl of Winton had a mansion house which became known as Lord Seytoun’s Lodgings. The Plaque at the main entrance to the building reads; In memory of Charles M Pelham Burn First Chairman of this institution to whose personal influence and exertions is mainly due to the successful establishment of this residence for Veterans of the Navy and Army to whom its hospitality might be acceptable in the days of their old age and necessity. White Horse Close Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh The original owner of the land where White Horse Close stands was a Laurence Ord who built houses stables and a tavern (Ord’s Tavern) in a courtyard that was gated to the south and was named Laurence Ord’s Close. This was once where the Royal Mews was situated and Queen Mary kept her Horse which was a palomino (White Horse). The origin of the close being called White Horse Close. Laurence Ord sold the land and buildings to a John Mitchell in 1695 and he then sold it on to Nicol Graham in 1745 who in turn sold it on to John Davidson in 1752. On the walls in White Horse Close look for the plaques of William Dick founder of the Edinburgh veterinary college (The Royal Dick Vet) and Ord’s Tavern. The plaque can be found on the wall of the house at the back of the courtyard where the Inn was. This area was also said to have been used in 1745 by the officers of the Jacobite army prior to the battle of Prestonpans lead by Bonnie Prince Charlie. White Horse Close Ord's Inn (Tavern) The White Horse Inn at the back of White Horse Close (Ord’s Tavern) in the Canongate is where a plaque denotes that this was the first point when leaving by coach to London. This is not correct as records show that the coaches left from the Head of the Canongate, there is a White Horse Inn at the top of the Canongate which is connected to Boyd’s Entry and Boyd’s Close in St Mary Street or White Horse Close as it was often Called. There once was an entrance in the Canongate Boyd’s Close now Gullan’s Close and an entrance from Boyd’s Entry as there had to be stables for the horses and a place for the coaches. Boyd’s Entry is the original starting point for the coach and horses. There are a number of plaques that have been put up stating this, also when Boyd advertised the Inn for sale, it was advertised with stables for 100 horses and 20 coaches. The first coaches set of for London in 1712. William Dick (Plaque) White Horse Close Canongate Edinburgh The founder of the Edinburgh Veterinary College William Dick was born in 1793 in White Horse Close in the Canongate. William Dick was educated at Mr Kesson’s school in Shakespeare Square which was located at the east end of Edinburgh at the foot of the North Bridge. The square was demolished in 1860. The first veterinary College was in Clyde Street on the site of where the present bus station is now. The College moved to the site of Summerhall, William Dick the Veterinary Science department is now at the Bush Estate. In 1906, the College was named the Royal (Dick) Veterinary College and became part of the University of Edinburgh in 1951. The Girth Cross Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh The Girth Cross just like the Mercat Cross in the High Street, was a place for public proclamations, and executions. One of the most famous to take place here was that of the beautiful Jean Livingston (Lady Warriston), daughter to the Laird of Dunipace and wife of John Kincaid of Warriston. On the 2nd July 1600 she had Robert Weir, a servant of her father, batter her husband to death, an idea given to her by her nurse. Both the nurse and Lady Warriston were arrested and convicted of the murder of her husband, John Kincaid of Warriston. The nurse was burned on the Castlehill at 4 o’clock in the morning and at the same time Lady Warriston was beheaded by the “Maiden” (early type of guillotine) at the Girth Cross at the foot of the Canongate. This device, which can still be seen at the National Museum of Scotland in Chambers Street, Edinburgh, claimed over 150 victims during its period of use, including, Regent James Douglas 4th Earl of Morton, who originally introduced the “Maiden” from France. The servant Robert Weir was broken on the Breaking Wheel in 1603 for his crime (a brutal and agonising death). Russell House Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh Russell House was named after Sir Robert Russell for all the effort he took to have the building saved for posterity. This is an example of a 17th Century tenement that the local Edinburgh people of the time would have live in. The Canongate was founded in 1140. King David I gave permission to the Canons of Holyrood Abbey to create the Burgh and it became part of Edinburgh in 1856. Above the doorway on the lintel is inscribed WL MA 1697 this could be from another building as it was common for reuse of stone work. The initials would represent the name of the owner of the property and his intended wife and the date of their marriage). Russell House was built on what was the site of St Thomas’s Hospital built in 1541 by George Crichton. Watergate Canongate Royal Mile Edinburgh The Water Gate (Water Yett) was found at the foot of the Canongate on the north side near to White Horse Close. It was named the Watergate as a pond for watering horse dominated the area. Bruntsfield Links and the Meadows in Edinburgh. The history of the Burgh Loch and world's first Golf Course and club House. The fist established Golf Clubs and the oldest golf trophy. The first Derby between Hearts and Hibs football teams. Bruntsfield Links Edinburgh and The Meadows Bruntsfield Links Edinburgh Bruntsfield Links is where the first golf was played circa 1380. The Burghers were instituted in 1735 now known as Royal Burgess the Oldest Golf Cub in the world. The Rhind Stone pictured below is of two Burghers golfers with their caddies on the Bruntsfield Links. When overcrowding of the golf course became a problem the Burghers (Burgess) moved to Musselburgh in 1874 and then made a final move to their present home in Barnton where they had a golf course designed by Tom Morris which opened in May of 1895. It was 1929 when King George V by royal proclamation allowing the Burgess to change name to The Royal Burgess Golfing Society as it is today. Bruntsfield Links The World's Oldest Short Hole Golf Course Ye Old Golf Tavern First Golf Club House The first known Club House in the world was in Wright’s House a few yards up from the present Golf Tavern which was established in 1456 next to Bruntsfield Links. The Golf Tavern is still where golfers can rent clubs to play golf over the Links at Bruntsfield. The original golf house was where the first golf clubs met and arranged competitions circa 1380. Many famous people of the time played here including Kings and Queens. The Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh first incorporated in 1735 and became The Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh. The Meadows Edinburgh The area of the Meadows was originally the Boroughloch pre 1500. The draining of the Borough (Burgh) Loch started in 1657, which made way for the Meadows. The area was used for grazing sheep and cattle before the Loch was drained and laid out as it is today with grass and pathways. The Borough Loch had been one of the main water supplies for the City of Edinburgh. Once the Loch was drained, The Meadows were laid out as parkland, with narrow drainage canals, a summer house, Bandstand, tree-lined Walks and Avenues. On several occasions the area has been threatened with development but is still laid out in the design of circa 1800. The East Meadows was the site of the first Edinburgh football derby between the Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian football clubs on Christmas Day 1875 which became an annual event to the present day. In the distance you can see Arthur Seat and Salisbury Crags. East Meadow Edinburgh West Meadows Edinburgh Meadows Pillars Edinburgh There are six pillars two at the west entrance to the meadows stand at either of Melville Drive. Both have Unicorns on the top of the pillars. A further two are at the east end of Melville Drive the road that separates the meadows from Bruntsfield Links, however there is a lion on the top of one of the pillars and a unicorn on the other. The final two pillars are similar to the first two both have unicorns on the top. They stand at the entrance to Middle Meadow Walk on Teviot Place next to the Old Medical School. Nelson Pillars Edinburgh The two pillars that stand at the east end of Melville drive were donated to the city of Edinburgh in 1876 as a thank you from printing and publishing firm Thomas Nelson and Sons for the help received by the council when their printing works were destroyed by fire. The Lion and Unicorn are part of the Coat of Arms of Scotland. Whales Jawbones Meadows Edinburgh Jaw Bone Walk stretches from the foot of Meadow Place at Marchmont to the junction of the paths intersection of Middle Meadow Walk on the north edge of the Meadows. The Jaw Bones where the path gets it's name stood across the path at the entrance to the meadows at Meadow place. The whale’s jawbone came from Shetland for the Zetland and Fair Isle Knitting Stand and was presented to the people of Edinburgh at the International Exhibition of 1886. Helen Acquroff Memorial Drinking Fountain Meadows Edinburgh Helen Acquroff born on the southside of Edinburgh in October 1831 a talented teacher blind from the age of 11 years she excelled as a musician, pianist, singer and poet, she died at home 51 Clerk Street, Edinburgh in September 1887. The Fountain is memorial to her and life. She was an active member of the Temperance Movement. The inscription Reads: In Memorium Helen Acquroff Sister Cathedral 1889 Erected By Members of The IOGT And Other Friends. Prince Albert Sundial Meadows Edinburgh The great International Exhibition of Industry, Science and Art was held in the West Meadows during the summer of 1886. Edinburgh and its Meadows site were given worldwide recognition. In the West Meadows an important piece of sculpture commemorating the opening of the Exhibition is still present .The Prince Albert Sundial is an octagonal pillar with a bronze armillary sphere which acts as a sundial. Banning of Football The Royal Company of Archers has had its base in Edinburgh at Archers' Hall Buccleuch Street, Edinburgh since 1777. 100 yards from the East Meadows. The Royal Company of Archers is a ceremonial unit that serves as the Sovereign's Bodyguard in Scotland, a role it has performed since 1822. The Archer’s would have tournaments in the Meadows where they would regularly practice. The First Edinburgh Football Derby The first Edinburgh Football Derby between Edinburgh Hibernian and Heart of Midlothian F.C. took place on the East Meadows on Christmas Day 1875. Edinburgh Southside Direct access by the South Bridge opened in 1788. Lady Nicolson gave here lands, built a new road a continuation of the South Bridge. That opened up the south for building a bigger Edinburgh. Edinburgh's City Wall University of Edinburgh South Bridge The Southside of Edinburgh was only accessible after the South Bridge had been built. The foundation stone of the South Bridge was laid 1 August 1785 by Lord Haddo who was the Grand Master Mason of Scotland. The South Bridge opened in 1788 to pedestrians and traffic to give direct access to the south of Edinburgh. To make way for the South Bridge many houses and closes were demolished. The Tower at Portobello which still stands was built in 1785 by Mr James Cunningham from stones window sills and lintels from properties that were knocked down to allow the South Bridge to be built. The South Bridge is visible from the Cowgate where it passes over the street. Nicolson Square was built on Nicolson Park circa 1750 on land owned by Lady Elizabeth Nicolson at the same time as she built a new road which was later named Lady Nicolson Street and now shortened to Nicolson Street a continuation of the South Bridge linking the South with the Old Town of Edinburgh. There is a square of Nicholson Street with a garden. In the Garden is a Brass Pillar and Iron Fountain. Charles Darwin attended the Medical School for 2 years but did not complete the course due to its degree of difficulty. However, he went on to write “The Origin of Species” later in his life. If you walk past the bollards you will see on the wall a plaque to Charles Darwin that reads; Darwin | On this site | Charles Darwin (1809- 1882) | author of The Origin of Species | lodged at 11 Lothian Street | whilst studying medicine at the | University of Edinburgh | 1825-1827. West College Street Edinburgh West College Street which runs down to Chamber Street is where the Kirk O Field Port stood later to be called Potterrow Port. The image is an old map before the National Museum was built. William Topaz McGonagall South College Street Edinburgh William McGonagall was born in March 1825 and died in September 1902 he was a Scottish weaver, poet and actor and was regarded as the worst Poet in the English Language to put pen to paper. Writing over 200 poems of which the worst by far was “The Tay Bridge Disaster”. His turn of verse has been made known by the Goons, Monty Python, Spike Mulligan, and Peter Sellers. The name of the character Minerva McGonagall in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series was named after William McGonagall. Go down to the Poetry Library in the Canongate Edinburgh to read his works and judge for yourself. Inscription on the plaque above the door of 5 South College Street red; William McGonagall | Poet and Tragedian | Died Here | 29th September 1902. Now go back under the Potterrow Port and continue to see the sites. Agnes McLehose "CLARINDA" Agnes McLehose (1759-1841) was known as Nancy. Nancy first came to Edinburgh to live in Potterrow near the corner with Marshall Street after her husband left her to make his fortune in Jamaica. Robert Burns first meet with Nancy on the 4th December 1787 at afternoon tea and the assignation started. Mishap and misfortune stopped them from meeting for some time but they wrote to each other regularly. The love affair was to last until their death but their last meeting was in December of 1791 when Nancy left for Jamaica to be with her now wealthy husband. Read the famous letters written with code names Nancy being (Clarinda), Rabbie being (Sylvander) and not to forget the love song to Nancy `Ae Fond Kiss'. James Finlayson Nicolson Square Edinburgh James Finlayson born in Penicuik a few miles from Edinburgh in 1772. He became a textile mill engineer in 1820 he moved to Finland and seeing the opportunity in the fast flowing river of Tammerkoski, he open a company which manufactured machinery for the textile industry which became the largest industry in the Nordic countries in the late 19th and early 20th century. He was the person who made Tampere the second city of Finland. He also opened an orphanage for the children in Tampere. In 1838 he moved back to Scotland and moved to 8 Nicolson Square were he died at the age of 80. Brass Iron Founders’ Pillar Nicolson Square Garden Edinburgh The Brass Iron Founders’ Pillar features the biblical character, Tubal Cain the legendary founder of brass and iron making skills. The designer of The Brass Founders’ column was James Gowans the Lord Dean of Guild, commissioned by the Edinburgh and Leith Brass Founders for the 1886 International Exhibition of Science Art and Industry held in the Meadows where it won a gold medal. It was later shown at the Scottish National Exhibition in Saughton Park in 1908. It was then gifted to the City of Edinburgh. The pillar can be found in Nicolson Square Garden across from The Surgeons Hall Museum. Iron Fountain Nicolson Square Gardens The cast iron fountain was made at the Sun Foundry in Glasgow by George Smith & Co circa 1866 and was shown at the International Exhibition on the meadows in 1886. The granite plaque next to the fountain in Nicolson Square Garden gives a brief description of the pillar and fountain. King Fahd Mosque Islamic Centre of Edinburgh There is a community of over 12,000 Muslims in Edinburgh the first families arriving in the early 1950s. The Central Edinburgh Mosque has capabilities to hold over 1000 worshippers. The present Central Edinburgh Mosque is located on land that was purchased in the 1980s with a condition that the mansion house that is on the land would remain. The mansion house is still standing and is used for an exhibition and at Ramadan. The Mosque was opened in 1998 (1419) by the son of King Fahd of Saudi Arabia who donated 90% of the cost to build the centre. George Square George Square Gardens George Square in Edinburgh is in the centre of the University of Edinburgh Central Campus. In the centre of the square is a garden and around the square are buildings for learning. The Square and gardens were first laid in 1766. On a number of the walls are plaques of famous students. There are also a number of famous ex-residents who lived in the square. In the garden there are many benches to site and take time to contemplate the world and read a book. There are Standing Stones. One of which has been carved with a figure as if the stone had been split down the middle and the figure was revealed. George Square is also the centre of the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe every year in August. George Square + George Square Gardens Mrs Alison Cockburn Mrs Alison Cockburn was born in 1710 and died in 1794. She was a Scottish poet and socialite always in the company of the names of the Edinburgh enlightenment. Names she could call friends Robert Burns, Walter Scott and David Hume. The plaque reads; Mrs Cockburn 1710 -1794 Who wrote “The flowers O the forest ” lies buried near here. Buccleuch Parish Church (Chapel of Ease) The Church that stands in Chapel Street at the junction of the Cross Causeway was originally called the Chapel of Ease as St Cuthbert’s in Lothian Road had become too small for its congregation. The congregation of St Cuthbert’s Church had the Chapel of Ease built in 1754 and it opened its door in 1756. The most significant factor is the graveyard as there are a number of important people of the period buried in the graveyard here due to the over crowding of St Cuthbert's graveyard in Lothian Road Edinburgh. Dr Andrew Duncan (Pioneer of mental health) Dr Andrew Duncan a pioneer in mental Health was born in St Andrews on 17th October 1744. In May 1770 he was admitted a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians. In 1776 he founded the Edinburgh Dispensary. a great man of medicine who died in may 1832. He is buried in the Duncan family vault in the Chapel of Ease. The Plaque to is nephew Charles Darwin Author (The Origin of Species) is on the wall in Lothian Street where he lived while at the University Medical School. Unlike his Uncle Charles Darwin was a brilliant student but his life was cut short. He was the person that invited Robert Burns to come to Edinburgh, where he introduced Burns to the high society of Edinburgh. Royal Company of Archers Buccleuch Street, Edinburgh The Royal Company of Archers has had its base in Edinburgh at Archers' Hall Buccleuch Street, Edinburgh since 1777. The Royal Company of Archers is a ceremonial unit that serves as the Sovereign's Bodyguard in Scotland, a role it has performed since 1822. The Archer’s would have tournaments in the Meadows where they would regularly practice. In 1424 by the act of the Scottish Parliament the game of football was prohibited for the more necessary science of archery. Robert Burns Meets Sir Walter Scott 1786 The one and only time Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott met was in the house of Professor Adam Ferguson in Sciennes House Place, also present were Adam Smith, Dugald Stewart and Joseph Black. This was a meeting place of the hierarchy of Edinburgh society. Inscription reads; This tablet commemorates | The meeting | of Robert Burns and | Sir Walter Scott | which took place here | In the winter of 1786-87. Edinburgh Synagogue Hebrew Community Centre The Synagogue in Edinburgh was opened in 1932 and 1500 people attended the first service. The Synagogue in Salisbury Road is the only Synagogue in Edinburgh and has been since 1932. The first Synagogue in Edinburgh was in North Richmond Street in 1817. There has been a large Jewish community in Edinburgh for nearly 200 years. The Salisbury Road building was the initiative of Dr Salis Daiches, who served for 27 years as the Rabbi. Royal Commonwealth Pool Dalkeith Road Edinburgh The Royal Commonwealth Pool opened in January 1970 for the Commonwealth Games which were being held in Edinburgh. The Royal Commonwealth Pool was also used for the 1986 Commonwealth Games which were also held in Edinburgh. It was also used in the 2012 Olympic Games and the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The pool is open daily to the public for swimming. The Innocent Railway The building of the Innocent railway was first started in 1826 to transport coal from the pits in Dalkeith Midlothian to Edinburgh. The carriages were horse-drawn and a great success. In 1831 further lines were added, connecting Leith and Musselburgh. This railway has the oldest rail tunnel inn Britain. The train became popular with passengers as it took them to the beaches at the coast. The route Starts at the tunnel under Holyrood Park Road. The Rail goods and coal yard were once situated where the houses in East Parkside stand now. The rail line is now a walkway and cycle path. The Innocent railway was purchased by the national rail in 1945. Waterloo Memorial Edinburgh This monument to the memory of the Battle at Waterloo 1815, in a square neglected, stands outside Hermits Termits House built by William Clifton 1734 and where the Scots Poet William Bell Scott was born in 1811. Hermits Termits House Hermits Termits House was built by William Clifton a solicitor of Excise, another resident of note was William Bell Scott (1811–90) was a Scottish poet, painter, art critic, was born in Hermits Termits St Leonard’s Edinburgh. The initials on the crest C under the crown for Clifton W for William and the M for Mary and 1734 was when the house was built. William Clifton was a descendent of Sir Gervase Clifton “the Gentle” who was at Pinkie Cleugh in 1547. Holyrood Distillery The Holyrood Distillery and Visitor Centre is based on the southside of Edinburgh beside Arthur Seat at St Leonard’s Hill. This is the first Edinburgh city centre distillery to produce in over 200 years when Edinburgh was a hive of distilleries and breweries. The Holyrood Distillery is house in the old railway building built circa 1830. “The Innocent Railway” Edinburgh’s first railway. This will be the first distillery to produce a single malt whisky in circa 100 years. The Holyrood Distillery has a high quality experienced team with decades of distilling behind them. Jeanie Deans Tryst Jeanie Deans is a fictional character in Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Heart of Midlothian. The Cottage is now gone but a plaque is on the wall near to the site of where the cottage once stood. The cottage overlooked Arthur Seat. The wall is what remains of the world's first Academy for the Deaf and Dumb . The academy was founded by Thomas Braidwood in 1760. He would teach sign language and lip reading. In 1783 he moved to the outskirts of London where he opened another school. His three daughters and grandson all became teachers of the deaf. The wall and plaque can be found on the path Infirmary Street Edinburgh Royal College of Surgeons Surgeon's Hall Museum Edinburgh Nicolson Street Edinburgh is where you will find The Royal College of Surgeons. The Incorporation of Surgeons and Barbers were founded in Edinburgh in 1505 and in 1722 the surgeons broke away from the barbers. The Surgeons first met in Dickson's Close Royal Mle, then moved to Drummond Street in 1697. Then in 1778 King George III granted a new charter giving the surgeons the title The Royal College of Surgeons of the City of Edinburgh. The present Royal College Building opened in 1832 and in 1851 Queen Victoria granted a charter giving its present title The Royal College of Surgeons. Royal College of Surgeons’ Museum Edinburgh The Surgeon’s Hall Museum collection grew from 1699. In the 1800’s the Museum had expanded to include remarkable collections donated by famous people and inventors. There are three sections to the museum and many exhibitions held throughout the year. Royal Infirmary Edinburgh Original Royal Infirmary Gates The ornamental gates carved stone gateposts of the infirmary of High School Yards were saved and are now preserved at the entrance to the University Geography building in the adjacent Drummond Street. Drummond Street is also where a part of the Flodden Wall built in 1513 still stands. He Studied at the University of Edinburgh both medicine and botany. A surgeon and explorer of Africa, also and author of a book, Travels into the Interior of Africa (1797). Symposium Hall Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh Symposium Hall was originally built in 1847 as the Roxburgh Free Church. It then was converted into St Michael's Episcopal Church in 1888 and in 1965 amalgamated with All Saints’ Church in Brougham Street Tollcross. After being empty for some years The Royal College of Surgeons acquired it. Receiving donations from two main benefactors the hall was opened as The King Khalid Bin Abdul Aziz Symposium Hall in 1982. Lady Glenorchy Parish Church The Lady Glenorchy Chapel opened 1774 and was at Leith Wynd which was demolished in 1845 to make way for the building of the Waverley rail station. Lady Glenorchy purchased an old Chapel in Roxburgh Place in 1856 which became the Lady Glenorchy Parish Church. The Chapel was demolished and rebuilt and opened in 1913 and became one of the most popular churches of it time in Edinburgh. It was sold in 1969 and has been used as various purposes. Edinburgh Festival Theatre Empire Ballroom The Edinburgh Festival Theatre has an audience capacity of almost 2000 and stages live shows of all kinds (Pantomime, ballet, opera, musicals, vaudeville and the Edinburgh International Festival). There has been a theatre on this site since 1830 staging acts from around the world including the Circus and The Great Lafayette. It was in 1892 it first opened as the Empire Palace Theatre. The first of several Moss Empires opened around Britain by Sir Edward Moss who purchase his first site in Edinburgh of Newsome’s Circus in Nicolson Street Edinburgh in 1891. Moss owned the Gaiety Variety Theatre which was in Chambers Street Edinburgh and it was so popular he required a bigger venue which he did. A fire in 1911 destroyed the stage area and a number of people were killed, The Great Lafayette one of the greatest illusionist of the time a comment made by Houdini himself. The Great Lafayette is buried in Edinburgh with his dog a gift from Houdini. After a major rebuild the theatre reopened in 1928 s the Empire Theatre and continues to entertain the public to this day. La Scala Theatre The La Scala Electric Theatre opened in 1912 for silent movies and live theatre acts. . The site had previously been used as a live theatre opening circa 1860 as the New Royal Alhambra and after a change of name closure came in 1886 as the Royal Princess Theatre. The New town was quickly occupied by the wealthy from the old town and Canongate and an extension to the New Town was required by adding streets north of Queen Street. Edinburgh New Town North East Once the New town in Edinburgh was habitable it was quickly occupied by the merchants and well to do moving from the Canongate and Old Edinburgh. The New Tow was soon extended past Queen Street Gardens to the north. Heriot Row Edinburgh New Town North East Robert Louis Stevenson he went to school at Canonmills (now Baptist Church). The Stevenson family moved in 1857 to 17 Heriot Row Edinburgh Robert Louis Stevenson was born Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson at 8 Howard Place, Edinburgh, on 13 November 1850. He then moved with his parents to a new family home in Inverleith Row before moving to 17 Heriot Row where he lived from the age of 7 for the next 23 years the Stevenson family home. Then moving to Tusitala an island of Samoa, where he lived until he died in 1894 (aged 44). There is a bronze memorial to Robert Louis Stevenson in the Moray Aisle of St Giles Cathedral. Drummond Place Edinburgh New Town North East Drummond Place Sydney Goodsir Smith Sydney Goodsir Smith was born on 26 October 1915 in Wellington, New Zealand Scottish mother came to Edinburgh with his parents in 1928.A renowned Scottish poet, artist, dramatist and novelist. His home was 25 Drummond Place where he died young on the 15 January 1975 at the age of 59. There is a slab in Makars’ Court Lawnmarket to honour him and he is buried in the Dean Cemetery. William and Fanny McTaggart Sir William McTaggart (1903 – 1981) was a landscape artist and was married to Fanny Aavatsmark a Norwegian Journalist and Patriot. Born in Loanhead Midlothian he was a successful artist and teacher, he was given many honours including a knighthood in 1962. He lived with his wife Fanny Aavatsmark at Drummond Place Edinburgh till his death in 1981. Sir Compton McKenzie (writer) Compton McKenzie was born in 1893 in West Hartlepool His English father and American mother both actors. Compton Mackenzie moved to Scotland at the age of 35 and was a resident on Barra, having a house Suidheachan built in 1928. Moving to his new home in Edinburgh at 31-32 Drummond Place in 1946. Sir Compton Mackenzie died at his Edinburgh home in 1972 and was buried on the Isle of Barra where he wrote his novel Whisky Galore from true events. York Place North East New Town Edinburgh York Place Edinburgh New Town North East York Place was part of the northern extension of the new town a continuation of Queen Street and is unchanged since built circa 1820. There were many distinguished families who occupied the houses of this thoroughfare. Sir Henry Raeburn Henry Raeburn was a portrait painter and was born in Stockbridge Edinburgh in 1756 and died in Stockbridge Edinburgh 1823. He built a house in 32 York Place, this was where he painted, from 1795 – 1809. He was knighted in 1822 by King George IV and is recognised as Scotland’s most famous portrait painter. His best known work being “The Skating Minister” The Rev. Robert Walker of the Canongate Kirk skating on Duddingston Loch. The painting is in the National Gallery of Scotland. The main street in Stockbridge being Raeburn Place named after the painter near where he was born and also died. Alexander Nasmyth Artist Alexander Nasmyth born in 1758 in Edinburgh live at 47 York Place and was said to be the father of Scottish Landscape Painting. He Studied under Allan Ramsay and as a friend of Robert Burns was fortunate enough to be the only one to paint a portrait of Robert Burns that exists today. She was a principal in setting up St George’s training college which was the first Scottish institution for training women to teach in secondary education, Girls from St. George’s College were among the first female graduates of Edinburgh University. The tireless campaigning and endless work for women’s education led to an honorary LLD (Legum Doctor Latin: “teacher of the laws”) from Edinburgh University in 1920 and a DBE (Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in 1931. Sir J M Barrie Sir J M Barrie was famous for his his book Peter Pan. James Matthew Barrie graduated from Edinburgh University in 1882. He was the Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh for the last years of his life from 1930 – 1937. Jean Thomas Harris The Rotary Club Jean Thomson was born in Cumberland Street and lived there with her parents until 1892 moved to Comely Bank Avenue. She moved to America and lived in Chicago where she met her husband to be Paul Harris. Her Husband was a Chicago attorney and on 23 February 1905 formed what was to be a worldwide organisation (The Rotary Club), Jean was made an honorary member of the Inner Wheel Club of Edinburgh in 1946. Also included is the West Port, West Bow and King's Stable Road. Grassmarket Attractions Edinburgh The Grassmarket Area was where people from all over brought their livestock to sell at market. Cattle, horses, sheep and goats. There were many market stalls which would sell homemade and Homegrown goods. The Grassmarket is the oldest market area recorded in British history and has been written about since circa 1370. It was James the 3rd who first gave charter to a weekly market in 1477. This Grassmarket area was first paved in 1543 from the West Port to the Upper Bow. Today there is a weekly Saturday Market with all kinds of goods. From early morning to late afternoon there is a hive of activity. The Grassmarket has one road that runs through for traffic and the rest of the area is pedestrianised with outside drinking and eating areas for all the family. The Grassmarket was built on what was part of the south loch which was drained in the early 14th century. It became a cattle market shortly after and was officially one on Edinburgh's main markets under the ordinance of James III in 1477. There were many taverns and Inns to satisfy the thirst of the cattle traders and farm hands who brought their animals to market. In 1560 the Corn Market was moved from the corner of Marlin’s Wynd to the east end of the Grassmarket. The Gallows stood at the foot of the West Bow from 1660, near to where the Corn Market was situated. This became the main gallows for executions in Edinburgh until the last hanging on the 4th February 1874. when the gallows moved back to the High Street. The animal market took place here up to 1911. Two of the taverns still remain The Last Drop where it was said the person to be hanged would get his last drink. The other is Maggie Dickson’s a famous story of how the law was changed from the sentence being ‘to be hanged’ to ‘to be hanged till dead’ As Maggie was hung and didn’t die. North Side of the Grassmarket 1830 -2019 Grassmarket 500th Anniversary Plaque This plaque was unveiled |on the 3rd of October 1977 by the | Rt. Hon. Kenneth Borthwick. | Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh | To commemorate the 500th anniversary | of a reorganisation of Edinburgh markets. | Authorised by King James III. | on the 3rd of October 1477. | The Cattle Market was situated at | the western end of the Grassmarket | and in King’s Stables Road | this are was then just outside the Burgh. The White Hart Inn Grassmarket Edinburgh The White Hart Inn Edinburgh was established in 1516, The White Hart Inn is one of the oldest and most historic pubs in Edinburgh. Past visitors have included the poets Robert Burns and William Wordsworth. The murderers Burke and Hare also were regulars in the pub in the late 1820s, as this is where they were to lure their victims back to their nearby lodgings, where they were murdered and their bodies sold to Dr Knox for medical research and study by students of the University medical school. During the First World War, on 2 April 1916, a German Zeppelin bombing raid was mounted over Edinburgh. During the bombing, a bomb exploded on the pavement outside a Public House, injuring four, one of whom died of shrapnel injuries. Zeppelin Airship Paving Slab Grassmarket Edinburgh This Stone marks the site of a bomb dropped from Zeppelin Airship L14 on the night of 2nd April 1916 on that night 2 Zeppelin Airships dropped bomb on Leith and Edinburgh. Some of the places they were dropped in Edinburgh were; 39 Lauriston Place, 183 Causewayside, Marchmont Crescent, Belford Place, Lothian Road, the Castle Rock near the king’s Bridge, 16 Marshall Street, Nicolson Street, 69 St Leonards Hill, Royal Infirmary at Lauriston and Coltbridge Gardens. There were a number of deaths and injured plus substantial damage to property. Grassmarket Mission Grassmarket Edinburgh The Grassmarket Mission was founded by James Fairbairn in 1886. In 1930, the Mission purchased the building next door (at 96 Grassmarket) and constructed a new Mission Hall Alexander Barrie, was appointed Superintendent in 1916, Mission became known colloquially as “The Barries”. The Mission was there to help the poor and needy of the Grassmarket in 1989 the decision was made to sell the Mission Halls. The Grassmarket Community Project was incorporated and funded by The Grassmarket Mission in 2010 and is still going strong. The Plaque reads; Grassmarket Mission | Undenominational | Erected in Memory of | James Fairbairn | Founder and First Superintendent | Of This Mission | Died 3rd ay 1894 | “His works Do Follow Him “. The Grassmarket Gallows Grassmarket Edinburgh The Grassmarket Edinburgh 1477 to 1911 was one of Edinburgh’s main markets for horse and cattle. The Grassmarket was also a setting for public executions. under Scots Law at that time, as she had served her punishment, she was free to go. Only later the words “until dead” were added to the sentence of hanging. You can find the pub named after her just a few yards from where she was hanged. The shadow of a gibbet is marked on the paving stones where the former gallows were. The inscription around the stone reads; On this Spot many Martyrs and Covenanters died for the Protestant Faith Margaret Dickson ‘Half hang it Maggie Dickson’ One famous execution in 1724 was of a Margaret Dickson of Inveresk a young women separated from her husband. (She was to be known as ‘Half hang it Maggie Dickson’). Her crime was concealment of pregnancy in the case of a dead child. (Not to be her husbands). She was said to have killed and disposed of the child’s body. Her execution was carried out by the hangman, after hanging for the prescribed time she was put into a coffin which the lid was nailed firmly closed. A fight broke out between the friends of Maggie and ae surgeon’s apprentices who wanted the body for investigation a regular thing in these times. Her friends were successful and took the coffin on a wheelbarrow but the uneven roads caused shaking and banging of the coffin and at Peffermill her friends herd banging on the coffin and found Maggie to be alive. By the time they arrived in Musselburgh she walked the final distance to her home at Inveresk. Maggie had served her sentence of hanging and lived a long life and had several children. When Maggie went out people would look at her and shout out to her “half hang it Maggie” when she walked past them in the street. Last Man Executed in Grassmarket Inscription on the pavement reads; The last person to be hanged from the Grassmarket gallows was James Andrews on the 4th February 1784. the names and dates of others hanged are on the steel boards. The Grassmarket Cross THIS CROSS (ORIGINALLY A CRUCIFIX) WAS AT ONE TIME IMPOSED UPON THE WALL OF THE HOUSE WHICH STOOD IMMEDIATELY OPPOSITE THE SITE OF THE GALLOWS IN THE GRASSMARKET USED FOR PUBLIC EXECUTIONS. IT WAS THE LAST OBJECT TO BE SEEN BY THE SUFFERERS BEFORE DEATH. AMONG OTHERS WHO WERE EXECUTED AT THE SPOT WERE MANY WHO SUFFERED FOR CONSCIENCE SAKE. NOT IMPROBABLY SOME MEMBERS OF THIS CONGREGATION. IT IS NOT UNTRUE THEREFORE TO DESCRIBE IT AS A MARTYR’S CROSS AND NOT UNFITTING THAT IT SHOULD FIND PLACE HERE. WHEN THE HOUSE WAS DEMOLISHED THE CROSS WAS GIVEN TO ROBERT FARQUHAR SHAW STEWART WHOSE FAMILY PRESENTED IT TO OLD SAINT PAUL’S. Grassmarket Cross Captain John Porteous Lynching Grassmarket Edinburgh Captain John Porteous Lynching in 1736 after 10 years being Captain of the City Guard John Porteous was lynched on 7 September 1736. Three smugglers/robbers were caught and imprisoned for carrying out a robbery. William Hall, George Robertson and Andrew Wilson. At their trial William Hall was sentenced to transportation to the colonies for life, but Andrew Wilson and George Robertson were sentenced to hang and were imprisoned in the Tolbooth in Edinburgh’s High Street awaiting execution. George Robertson escaped and made his way out of Britain. However, Andrew Wilson was publicly hanged in the Grassmarket in April of 1736. As events unfolded a riot started and the City guard was called out, led by Captain John Porteous. Due to the rioting Captain John Porteous instructed his men to fire above the heads of the crowd this made the riot even more heated, the shots had killed onlookers who were at their windows of their houses. With the crowd getting even more violent, Captain Porteous gave the order to shoot into the crowd and more were killed. Later that day Captain John Porteous was arrested and charged with murder. At his trial on 5 July 1736, he was convicted by a unanimous decision and found guilty of murder and sentenced to death. The execution took place in the Grassmarket on 8 Sept. 1736. Door Lintel Grassmarket Edinburgh 71 Grassmarket The Lintel above the door Inscription: 1889 VITAM (LIFE) DIRIGAT (DIRECT) Prior to this building there were housing for the Knights Templar. Old Grassmarket Dwelling This is one of the oldest inscriptions in the Grassmarket dated 1634. The tenement originally owned in 1634 and inscribed 'Blessed be God for all his Giftis' between initials IL and GK, standing for James Lightbodie and his wife Geillis Kniblo. A Scottish custom for the newlyweds to inscribe their initials above the door of their house and the date they married or moved in. The Beehive Inn Grassmarket Edinburgh Death Cell Door Calton Jail Edinburgh The actual door of the death cell that was in the Calton Jail in Regent Road can be found on the first floor of the Beehive Inn. The Flodden Wall Grassmarket Edinburgh From Granny Green Steps across to The Vennel in the west end of the Grassmarket is where the Flodden Wall stood as a protection against invading armies. The Flodden Wall is the name given to the defensive wall which was built to surround the City of Edinburgh in 1513. The pictures below show the Flodden Wall as it is today. The first part of the wall visible is in The Vennel and the final part still standing is in The Pleasance. It was in 1513 that the Scots waged a disastrous attack on the English at Flodden Field. James IV was killed in the action, along with 10,000 other Scots. The Flodden Wall was built to defend Edinburgh from English attacks. Many parts of the wall survive to this day. The wall starts at the Castle goes down Granny Green Steps to the Grassmarket across the Grassmarket to the Vennel Steps where you can find the ‘Flodden Tower’ where the Flodden wall joins the Telfer Wall. This extension was to protect the Heriot Hospital, now Heriot’s School. John Taillefer was the master mason who built and named the Telfer Wall (1628 – 1636). At the corner of Lauriston Place and Heriot Place turn left and follow Heriot’s School wall until you reach a further part of the Telfer Wall. Continue round into Forrest Road where there is a plaque on the wall. This is where the wall would have crossed to the Bristo Gate on your right. Continue on and you will come to Greyfriar’s Kirkyard where there are many interesting things to see including parts of the Telfer Wall and where it joins with The Flodden Wall. The three buildings were a church a shop and housing. The wall tablet Inscription reads New Greyfriars Mission Buildings to the glory of God and in loving memory of the Rev. William Robertson DD, for nearly 40 years minister of this Parish. AD 1884. The Church building is now a bar restaurant and brewery. Castle Wynd South Castle Wynd South is a path and steps that gives access to Johnston Terrace from the Grassmarket. The Steps are named after Patrick Geddes (biologist, sociologist, geographer, and philanthropist) Best known as a town planner. A further set of steps Castle Wynd North gives access to Castlehill and the entrance to Edinburgh Castle. Heriot Bridge Grassmarket Edinburgh Heriot Bridge in the Grassmarket was an access road to Heriot Hospital (school) when it opened in 1628. The Heriot Bridge has long since been block by other school buildings. Heriot’s when built had its main entrance facing the Castle and then the Old Town of Edinburgh as Heriots School stood outside the city walls. Kelso Attractions Scottish Border Town Kelso Abbey In the early times, about AD 1100, the main settlement in the area was in what was then known as Marchmount. The site of a castle which stood on the mound between the Teviot and Tweed. In 1124 David I, renamed the Town and Castle as Roxburgh (Rokesburgh). Today Roxburgh Castle is a ruin. David I founded Kelso Abbey, in 1128, in Easter Kelso which expanded around the abbey. Kelso Abbey was inhabited by monks from Normandy (Tiron) in France which Alexander I brother to David I had first brought to Selkirk. In 1143 the Abbey was dedicated to The Blessed Virgin and Saint John. After the final destruction of the Abbey buildings in circa 1587. Most of the Abbey ruins were cleared in 1805 leaving what you can be seen today. Kelso War Memorial The War Memorial can be seen in gardens next to Kelso Abbey ruins. The garden was gifted by the Duke of Roxburghe in 1921. Kelso War Memorial commemorates the people of Kelso who were lost in World War I (92 names) and World War II (42 names). The memorial resembles a medieval Scottish Mercat Cross, with a sculpture of St George slaying the dragon, a symbol for the triumph of good over evil. There are bronze plaques with the names of the fallen. Waverley Lodge Kelso Sir Walter Scott Walter Scott lived with his aunt Janet in 1783 for 6 months and attended Kelso Grammar School. While at Kelso Grammar school he met James Ballantyne, who was later to become Walter's publisher and business partner. He live in Waverley Cottage which has a bust of Scott and a dog statue. Kelso Grammar School Bridge and River Tweed Floors Castle Gates Floors Castle is one of the most historic residences in Scotland with centuries of family history. The Castle has been home to the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe since 1730. Floors Castle was first constructed between 1721 and 1726 for the 5th Earl of Roxburgh, who became the 1st Duke of Roxburghe in 1707, moving from their main residence in Dunbar (Broxmouth Park) to their new residence at Floors C astle in 1730. Floors Castle stands in a 52000 acre estate which includes the Cheviot Hills, Tweed Valley and Lammermuir Hills. It Overlooks the River Tweed and the ruins of Roxburgh Castle. There is many things to see, and do, a great day out for all the family. Beirhope Alpacas Beirhope Farm Kelso is where you can go trekking with Alpacas. The Alpaca originates from South American are a camelid mamma. Like a small Llama. They have been present in Kelso since 2006 and there is a herd of over 25.

Melrose and Dryburgh Scottish Borders Attractions The town of Melrose is in the heart of the Scottish Borders. Melrose is where the Abbey where the Heart of Robert the Bruce is buried. It is also where at Newstead the Romans built first and main camp in the north. Trimontium was the Roman Camp built in 79 A.D. (the size of a town). This is as most Sottish Borders towns is a rugby town with the main exception that it is where the game of 7's rugby began. Melrose Rugby Club Melrose Rugby Football Club was founded in 1877 and is one of the world’s oldest Rugby Football Clubs. Melrose Rugby Club is where 7 a side rugby was thought up by Ned Haig and first played in 1883. The world comes to Melrose in April for the 7s Rugby Tournament. Melrose Abbey Melrose Abbey founded in 1136 by King David I. This was the first Cistercian monastery in Scotland. His home was in Earlston in the Scottish Borders. The legend tells that Thomas fell asleep beneath a tree at the foot of the Eildon Hills. When he woke he saw the vision of a shining Lady on a Grey horse, this was the Queen of the Fairies and she entranced him and took him away to Fairyland. He remained there for what he thought had been three days, but was actually 7 years. When he left, the Queen gave him the gift of speaking the truth and told him many prophecies of great events in Scottish history. Thomas the Rhymer Stone Thomas the Rhymer Stone Eildon Hills Bridge Over the Tweed One of the events he prophesied that there would be a bridge over the River Tweed which would be visible from the Eildon Tree. The Fairy Queen also told Thomas that she would return one day, so if you feel weary rest under the tree and you never can tell what will happen next. Thomas was a real person and lived in the 1200s and his rhymes have been popular for hundreds of years. His rhymers are the earliest examples of Scottish Poetry. Look in the Poetry Library of the Royal Mile for some examples. Stand by the stone and look for the Bridge or take a nap and see what happens. Dryburgh Attractions Scottish Borders Dryburgh Abbey In 1150 Hugo de Morville, owner of large area of southern Scotland granted by King David I, established the first community of White Canons of the Premonstratensian Order at Dryburgh. Edward II of England in 1322 and burnt the Abbey and Robert the Bruce had it rebuilt, it was again attacked in 1385 and has been attacked on other occasions, but parts still stand after 850 years. Dryburgh is a small hamlet with an Abbey of great significance. There are many things to see in and around the Abbey with Walter Scott's famous view of the Eildon Hills, and his family grave in the graveyard of the Abbey. A 30 foot statue of William (Braveheart) Wallace and the Temple of the Muse close to the River Tweed. Dryburgh Abbey has many attractions that include the grave of Earl Haig and an obelisk in memorial to King James I, king James II and Hugh de Moreville. Sir Walter Scott's Grave Sir Walter Scott died in 1832 and is buried in Dryburgh Abbey burial grounds. Also in the tomb are some of his family. His wife who died in 1816. His son also Walter, died 1847 and his wife. John Gibson Lockhart's Grave Walter Scott's son-in-law, who wrote Walter Scott’s biography died 1854. Interned next to Sir Walter Scott. Earl Douglas Haig of Bemersyde's Grave Field Marshal Douglas Haig was Commander in Chief of the British forces in the First World War. The Haig family have been part of the area since the building of the Abbey circa 1100. Memorial Obelisk Dryburgh Abbey The Obelisk at Dryburgh Abbey is engraved with figures of three great men. King James I, king James II and Hugh de Moreville who was born in Cumbria circa 1100 was Lord High Constable of Scotland and owned a large part of Scotland. Founder of Dryburgh Abbey circa 1150 and died circa 1160 in Dryburgh in the Scottish Borders.
