Colinton Village an area in south west Edinburgh. The history here, Bonaly Tower and Spylaw House, Colinton Castle ruins and House. Colinton kirk where Robert Louis Stevenson attended as his grandfather was minister. The yew tree still stands where Robert would play on the swing and write poetry. Colinton Village Area Colinton originally Collington. The area first known in circa 1090 where Ethelred son of Malcolm III and Queen Margaret (Edinburgh Castle) built a church. He later became Abbot of Dunkeld. Colinton at one time had many mills producing snuff, textiles and paper. A railway was built circa 1850 which connected Edinburgh to the village a popular day trip destination. St Cuthbert's Parish Church Colinton Village Saint Cuthbert’s Parish Church dates from 1626 when it was moved to this site. The present Church was built in 1908. The area was used by many travellers including Royalty as this was a ford in the river easiest to cross, this was the shortest route from Dunfermline Palace to Melrose Abbey. Foulis Sundial To the left of the entrance to the church at about 3 m (10 foot) can be seen a sundial with the date 1630 and bears the coat of arms of the Foulis family. Oldest Gravestone Agnes (Heriot) Foulis The oldest gravestone is with a date of 1593, Agnes Heriot the wife of James Foulis of Colinton. Agnes Heriot was Heiress of Lumphey near Pembroke, Wales was born in 1556, and Agnes married James Foulis circa 1564, at age 8 and died 1593 at age 37. Iron Coffin “Mortsafe” You will see enclosed vaults and metal fenced cages called mort safes as a deterrent to grave robbers taking the bodies from their resting place to use in the medical school for autopsy and scientific experiments. The famous grave robbers of the time were (Burke and Hare). Circa 1826 there was a large problem of grave robbers The Body Snatchers as they were called would dig up the newly buried and sell the bodies, taking the bodies from their resting place to use in the Edinburgh medical school for autopsy and scientific experiments. There were deterrents put in place to stop the body snatchers, enclosed vaults and metal fenced cages with locks and iron coffins known as a ‘mortsafe’ could be hired out. The mortsafe would be put on the grave where the coffin had been buried and as the mortsafe were so heavy (1000 kilos) they could not be moved. There is a mortsafe close to the entrance to the church thought to be the only one left in existence. Robert Louis Stevenson Dr Lewis Balfour was the minister of St Cuthbert’s Parish Church in Colinton in 1838. His daughter being the mother of Robert Louis Stevenson, author and poet. As a boy Robert Louis Stevenson would played on a tree swing next to the manse and while sitting by the river would write poetry. Plaque on Statue Robert Louis Stevenson “All through my boyhood and youth I was known and pointed out for the pattern of an idler; and yet I was always busy on my own private end, which was to learn to write. I kept always two books in my pocket, one to read, one to write in.” “Memories and Portraits” Robert Louis Stevenson Rev Lewis Balfour Family Plot St Cuthbert's Graveyard Colinton Village Dr Lewis Balfour was born 1777 in Pilrig House Leith, Scotland and died at age 82 in 1860. Father to Margaret Isabella who married Thomas Stevenson and mother to Robert Louis Stevenson. Lewis Balfour became a minister in Ayrshire in 1806 and became the parish minister of Colinton Village in 1824 where he lived until his death in 1860. James Gillespie of Spylaw Tomb St Cuthbert's Graveyard Colinton Village Henry MacKenzie's Cottage Colinton Village Henry Mackenzie was born in 1745 on Liberton Wynd which was a road from the head of the Canongate (Cranston Street) to the foot of Calton Hill (Leith Street). His education was like most wealthy Edinburgh families, High School then University of Edinburgh. He was a lawyer but his main passion was writing. His first publication after being rejected on several occasions was finally in 1771 he published, "Man of Feeling" anonymously, it was a great success. He had further successful publications and was part of the Enlightenment and a lodge member of Canongate Kilwinning. HE was one of the first to help Robert Burns when he was invited to Edinburgh by his friend Dr Thomas Blacklock. Henry died in 1831. Redford Army Barracks Colinton Edinburgh Redford Barracks opened circa 1915 at the head of Colinton Village. This was the largest military in Scotland to be built since 1769 when Fort George Inverness opened. PHOEBE ANNA TRAQUAIR RAILING AND GATE These wrought-iron railings and gates were commissioned by the well-known Edinburgh printer Walter Bigger Blaikie for his house in Colinton. They were designed by Phoebe Anna Traquair, with the technical help from the architect Frank Mears and made in 1924 by Thomas Hadden, the leading wrought- iron worker in Scotland. Phoebe Anna Traquair lived in Colinton And was one of the most versatile contributors to the Late nineteenth century British Arts and Crafts movement. The ornamental railings are a unique example Of her work in wrought iron. They were restored by the Colinton Community Conservation Trust in 2007, Using Chris Topp & Co Ltd., Stone masons from Edinburgh. Spylaw House (James Gillespie) Spylaw House in Colinton was the home to James Gillespie a tobacco merchant with a shop in the North Foulis’ Close, High Street. James Gillespie an Edinburgh city merchant and founder of James Gillespie’s Hospital and School. The hospital opened in 1802 and could accommodate up to 66 Pensioners with preferential entry going to people with the name Gillespie. The school was originally sited at Gillespie Crescent near to the original hospital at Wright’s house. James Gillespie was born in Edinburgh on the 28 April 1726 and died at his home in Spylaw, Colinton a suburb of Edinburgh on 8 April 1797. His brothers, John and James were Tobacco and snuff merchants had their own factory at the back of their house at Spylaw. Due to the civil war in the Americas they were a main British supplier to the trade and controlled the prices at the time. James Gillespie is buried in Colinton Parish Church. Water of Leith Walkway Colinton Balerno, Currie, Juniper Green, Redhall, Craiglockhart, Slateford, Harperrig 10m, Leith 8m Colinton Castle Colinton Castle was the home of the Foulis family from 1531 was purchased by James de Foulis born 1490. James married a Catherine Brown. He held the office of Lord Clerk Register. He was also a Member of Parliament and in 1526 became a Judge and was a Lord of Session in 1532. He died in 1549. Alexander Foulis of Colinton born circa 1600 – died 1665 was made a baronet of Nova Scotia in 1634. His son James Foulis, 2nd Baronet of Colinton was knighted by Charles I on 14 November 1641, and represented Edinburgh in parliament, was Lord Justice Clerk and known as Lord Colinton, he died in 1688. Colinton Castle was abandoned by its new owner Sir William Forbes who purchased the estate from the Foulises in 1800, who then built Colinton House, however he died before finishing. His son completed the house and had a staircase included in his alterations in 1840 that were carried out by William Playfair. Colinton House Colinton House was the home to James Abercrombie, 1st Baron Dunfermline (1776–1858), who was Speaker of the House of Commons and died at Colinton in 1858. The house was occupied until 1925 and in 1929 it became part of Merchiston Castle School. Covenanters' 1666 Rullion Green The memorial is to remember the covenanters' who died at the Battle of Rullion Green. It was at Colinton where the covenanters' turned for home, on their way the Royalist Army lead by Sir Thomas Dalziel caught up with them, just outside Penicuik at Rullion Green and after a short and bloody battle and many deaths, the Government troops took the Covenanters that survived and imprisoned them in Greyfriars Covenanters prison where they died, were executed or deported. A few were lucky and escaped. The column was erected by Mr MacFie and the inscription around top of column; "Covenanters 1666" "Romans" "Cromwell 1650" "Charles 1745". George Square and George Square Gardens are in the centre of the University of Edinburgh's Campus on the southside of Edinburgh. Buccleuch Place which backs onto George Square has many medallions and plaques to famous people and the George Square Gardens are not to be missed. George Square Edinburgh George Square in Edinburgh is in the centre of the University of Edinburgh Central Campus. In the centre of the square is a garden and around the square are buildings for learning. The Square and gardens were first laid in 1766. On a number of the walls are plaques of famous students. There are also a number of famous ex-residents who lived in the square. In the garden there are many benches to site and take time to contemplate the world and read a book. There are Standing Stones. One of which has been carved with a figure as if the stone had been split down the middle and the figure was revealed. George Square is also the centre of the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe every year in August. George Square Garden Labyrinth “The labyrinth is an ancient archetypal pattern dating back more than 4000 years. The design of the Edinburgh Labyrinth is based on the 13th century labyrinth laid in the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France (Notre-Dame d’Chartres or the Cathedral of Notre-Dame). Jane Welsh was born in Haddington East Lothian 14 January 1801 – 21 April 1866, she is buried in Haddington She Married Thomas Carlyle the essayist. Peter Mark Roget Plaque George Square Edinburgh Peter Mark Roget was born in 1779, he studied at Edinburgh University Medical School and graduated in 1798. He was a brilliant doctor and published papers on tuberculosis and the effects of nitrous oxide as an anaesthetic. At the age of 34 in 1814 he invented the slide rule which was used by students in schools and Universities for many years. He is best known for ‘Roget’s Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases’, the thesaurus was published in 1852. Peter Roget died in 1869 aged 90. Eric Henry Liddell Plaque George Square Edinburgh Eric Henry Liddell was born in China in 1902 a son of a missionary. Eric Liddell was educated in a boarding school in Blackheath and spent his childhood there will his parents were in China. At the age of 18 he enrolled in Edinburgh University were his brother was already studying. Eric Liddell lived for a short time in Gillespie Crescent before moving to a house in Merchiston Place. While in Edinburgh he lived firstly in Gillespie Crescent before moving to Merchiston Crescent. He was a very good athlete and played Rugby and took part in track events for both the University and Scotland. He took part in the Paris Olympics and won a Gold in the 400 and a bronze in the 200. After graduating from Edinburgh University he returned to China and his last years he was interned in Weihsien prison camp which was a Japanese- internment camp created during World War II to hold civilians of Allied countries living in North China where he died. The Eric Liddell Centre at Holy Corner in Edinburgh is where Eric Liddell attended Church. Benjamin Rush Plaque George Square Edinburgh Benjamin Rush Graduate of Edinburgh University Medical School 1768 at 22 years old, signatory of the American Declaration of Independence, Leader of the American Enlightenment, founder of Dickinson College (private, residential liberal arts college in Carlisle, Pennsylvania) the first college to be founded after the formation of the United States of America. He was also at the age of 23 the first professor of chemistry in America. Benjamin Rush Benjamin Rush was born in 1746 in Pennsylvania U.S.A. Benjamin Rush lived with his uncle Reverend Dr. Samuel Finley ensured Benjamin Rush received an education. Benjamin Rush went to the College of New Jersey which is now called Princeton in 1759. In 1766 at the age of 20 Benjamin Rush moved to Edinburgh to study at the University of Edinburgh Medical School which was the most respected in the world. Benjamin Rush graduated with a degree in medicine in 1768. Benjamin Rush set up the Philadelphia Dispensary in 1786 to provide medical care for the poor which was the first institution of its kind in the United States. Benjamin Rush was not just a doctor but a person that wanted to change the world, to give justice and equality to all. The Declaration of Independence was adopted by the second continental congress on July 4th, 1776 Benjamin Rush signed the final document of the Declaration of Independence with other members on August 2 1776. Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Plaque George Square Edinburgh Mwalimu Julius Nyerere First President of the United Republic of Tanzania was known as Mwalimu’ or ‘Teacher’ in Swahili. He was President from the country’s founding in 1964, until his retirement in 1985. Mwalimu Julius Nyerere received a scholarship to the University of Edinburgh in 1949 and became the first Tanzanian to study at a British university and only the second to gain a university degree outside Africa. He died in 1999 at the age of 77 years. St Albert’s Catholic Chaplaincy The Dominican Priory opened in Edinburgh in 24 George Square in 1931 and were appointed as Catholic Chaplains to the students and staff at the University of Edinburgh and to the Catholic Professional Guilds of the City of Edinburgh. The plaque on the wall above the door is of Saint Albert. His name was Albertus Magnus born circa 1190. Swedish Runic Stone. “Swedish Runestone”, This ancient (11th Century Viking) Standing Stone has been a part of Edinburgh circa 1780 when Sir Alexander Seton of East Lothian donated it to the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland In 1785. The Stone would have been from their Castle estate in Sweden. Lilla Ramsjö, Vittinge, Uppland, Sweden The Seton family a very wealthy and powerful family of East Lothian purchased Ekolsund Castle in Enköping Sweden from Gustav III who had used it as a Royal Residence until he sold it to the Seton's in 1912. Portrait in Great Hall. Now read the story. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade Ensign Ewart EDINBURGH CASTLE ESPLANADE SERGEANT CHARLES EWART MEMORIAL AND GRAVE Battle of Waterloo 18th June 1815. In 1938 the actual remains of Ensign Ewart were re-interred on Edinburgh Castle’s Esplanade. Look behind the memorial stone and you can see his head stone . Grave Stone In Memory of Ensign Charles Ewart who died March 23rd 1846 aged 77 years Date of the Battle of Waterloo on end of Ensign Charles Ewart Memorial Stone Ensign Ewart Taking of the Flag at Waterloo As Ewart fought his way deep into the heart of the 45th French Infantry, he was caught in a fierce fight with a French officer. The French officer was saved from Ewart’s fatal strike by the arrival of his senior officer, Francis Kinchant. The French officer surrender to Kinchant saving his life. No sooner had Ewart turned away from the scene when he heard a gunshot just behind him. When he turned back, he saw senior officer Kinchant fall of his horse and the French Officer trying to hide his gun with which he had just killed Kinchant. Ewart, furious at what the French Officer had done, he lashed out with his sword ignoring the Frenchman’s pleas for mercy and took the Frenchmen’s head off with one stroke of his sword. (See the sword in Edinburgh Castle) Ewart was now near to the 45th French Infantry standard bearer. Rather than retreating, Ewart continued forward and battled through to take the flag back to his own lines and into history. In Ewart’s own words, what was to follow; “It was in the first charge I took the eagle from the enemy. I had a hard contest for it, he made a thrust at my groin, I parried it off and cut him down through the head. After this a lancer came at me; I threw the lance off by my right side and cut him through the chin and upward through the teeth. Next, a foot-soldier fired at me and charged me with his bayonet, which I also had the good luck to parry, and then I cut him down through the head; thus ended the contest. As I was about to follow my regiment, the general said, ’My brave fellow, take that to the rear; you have done enough till you get quit of it’, which I was obliged to do, but with great reluctance. I retired to a height, and stood there for upwards of an hour, which gave a general view of the field, but I cannot express the horrors I beheld. The bodies of my brave comrades were lying so thick upon the field that it was scarcely possible to pass, and horses innumerable. I took the eagle into Brussels amid the acclamation's of thousands of spectators who saw it. Stationed at the airfield were many types of aircraft as well as airships (balloons). The World War 1 fighting ended on 11 November 1918. When the surrendered German Fleet sailed into the Firth of Forth, aircraft stationed at East Fortune made historic photographs and filmed the German Fleet. In the 2nd World War the aerodrome was used as a training base for pilots who came from all the allied counties including Australia and New Zealand. East Fortune was also used in the 1960s as an airport while Edinburgh Turnhouse Airport was being renovated, over 90.000 passengers used East Fortune during that time. King's Stables Road where King James IV had stables and where Jousting tournaments took place between Knights of all countries. Access to Princes Street Gardens King’s Stables Road Grassmarket Edinburgh King’s Stables Road joins the Old town at the Grassmarket, with the New Town at Lothian Road, towering over King's Stables Road to the east is Edinburgh Castle and the Castle Rock. To the west is a car park where the Stables once stood and West Port Suburbs where Burke and Hare the murders once lived. The Kings Bridge which stretches over the King’s Stables Road is where the old town is joined to the New Town at Johnston Terrace and Castle Terrace. The street name originates from when the Stables of the King were on the west side of the street. You will also find the west gate entrance to West Princes Street Gardens in King’s Stables Road and the entrance to St Cuthbert’s Church. The Little family were land owners here from circa 1590 first owning Liberton Tower then building Liberton House. Liberton Tower has grand furnished period interior over three floors and also an outside walkway. Liberton House is a mansion House with a Do'cot. Liberton House is haunted and sightings of ghostly apparitions have been seen and also voices in the night. Liberton Tower & Liberton House The Little family owned Liberton Tower from circa 1590, built circa 1450. William Little (Litil) younger brother of Clement both with association to the founding of the University of Edinburgh. William Little (Litil) was a Burgess and Lord Provost of Edinburgh built Liberton House circa 1600. Liberton Tower had been abandoned by circa 1610. There are inscriptions of 1675 and 1683 on Liberton House which was when the house was extended by decedents. There is also a Do’cot which all large houses had to provide fresh meat from the birds occupying the do’cot. Gilmerton Cove (Caves) Edinburgh Attractions The mystery of the Gilmerton Cove a secret hideout for the Knights Templar or an illegal drinking den. It is believed the caves were dug in early 1720s by a local blacksmith as a house. Go down the caves and decide for yourself. They can be found at 16 Drum Street Gilmerton. A small village that stood south of Edinburgh. This cave was dug out of rock by one George Paterson, a smithy. Completed in 1724 after five years hard labour, as reads the inscription on one of the chimney-heads. There are several compartments and were lived in by Paterson and his wife for many years. Gilmerton Cove Liberton Kirk There has been a religious building on this site from as far back as the 8th century. There is evidence of a chapel here, as mention was made in the Great Charter of Holyrood, signed in 1143. Liberton Kirk was not the first church on this site. the foundation stone of this building was laid in 1815 the old church being knocked down the previous year. Rev James Grant Plaque and Memorial Stone James Grant became the parish minister in August 1789 and dies in June 1831 and is remains are interned in the tower of the church. Erected in memorial of the long serving minister of almost 42 years Living Stones Cairn On the bicentenary of Liberton Kirk a stone cairn was erected at the south west corner of the church Its stones are a symbol of the church's “living stones” the people who continue to be the church of Jesus Christ in this place even though buildings change. Dr Guthrie’s Ragged School What is Guthrie Court nursing home was originally opened in 1887 as a Ragged School which replaced the first ragged school on Castlehill. The plaque reads; Founded by Dr Guthrie in Edinburgh 1847 transferred to Liberton 1887. Liberton Inn Edinburgh "Reuben Butler's House" The block of buildings have been at the centre of the old Liberton Village for centuries. The building at one time housed Liberton School and the master's house (Reuben Butler) from circa 1780 to 1889 when a new school was built. Reuben Butler, the sweetheart of Jennie Deans, in Walter Scott's 'Heart of Midlothian'.
