Pencaitland Attractions East Lothian Pencaitland East Lothian Pencaitland became a burgh of barony in 1695. There are two parts to Pencaitland Western and Eastern Pencaitland separated by the River Tyne. The Western side has the older houses and the main part of the old village where the eastern side has predominantly newer housing The old school house built i 1820. There are wood walks and many things to see in Pencaitland with its local hostelry three nearby Castles and Glenkinchie Distillery you can spend a great day out here. Pencaitland Mercat Cross East Lothian Pencaitland Mercat Cross was erected circa 1695 when by act of parliament the burgh can have a cross and a marketplace. Pencaitland has been said to be where body snatchers (resurrectionists) were caught and put in jougs (manacles) before receiving punishment from the crowd of villagers. Pencaitland Belfry Cottage and Old Schoolhouse East Lothian The first school and schoolhouse circa 1820, Pencaitland stands on the corner across from the Pencaitland mercat cross. On the Stone above the front porch a boy sites reading a book on the stone an inscription reads: “Given by John McEwan | To Robert Focco teacher | Wm’s Son Gave It to Mrs Trevelyan”. Pencaitland Bridges East Lothian The River Tyne flows under two bridges the old bridge between western and eastern Pencaitland was built circa 1500 to connect the two parts of the village seen below left. The other bridge is to the east on the way out of Pencaitland. On the south side are the arms of the Sinclair family and the date 1510 Pencaitland Temperance Hall East Lothian The Trevelyan Hall (Temperance Hall) in Wester Pencaitland was erected in 1883 by Mrs. Trevelyan in memory of her husband, Arthur Trevelyan, a well-known benefactor of Pencaitland who died in 1880. Arthur Trevelyan also had the Tyneholm Cottages and Trevelyan Cottage and Post Office built 1881. Pencaitland War Memorial East Lothian Pencaitland War Memorial was erected after the First World War in memorial to the fallen from the village. There is a plaque at the base of the monument to the memory of those who fell in the Second World War. Pencaitland Parish Church East Lothian Pencaitland Parish Church was consecrated in 1242 and was built prior to that but when is uncertain. There is a date on the lintel of the west door 1631 which is when the present church was erected. It is possible the church as most were extended and renovated at different periods but for certain a church stood here prior to 1242. In 1127 the Bishop of St. Andrews claimed jurisdiction over all the churches in the Lothians and prior to 1018 East Lothian was part of Northumbria Penkaet Castle Pencaitland East Lothian The Baronial home of Woodhead (or in old Celtic Penkaet) now known as Penkaet Castle built circa 1485. Sold to Adam de Crichton in 1506. The next owner was Alexander Cockburn who lived here till his death in 1579. Sir George Cockburn of Ormiston then purchased the barony before selling it to the Pringle family in 1636. The Castle was passed on in 1681 to John Lauder of Newington, Edinburgh. The Castle was empty for many years and became uninhabitable until in 1922 with a new owner an author and traveller, Professor John Bernard Holbourn renovated the property bringing it back to its former glory. Penkaet Castle Ghosts that Haunt the Castle With old Castles come the ghosts and murders and Penkaet is no different and boasts of three ghosts. Alexander Hamilton He was burned at the stake on Castlehill, Edinburgh for witchcraft, after putting a spell on Penkaet Castle, the Lady of the Castle and her daughter were found dead days later. It was later found that he had murdered them. It is said he roams the grounds at the gate where he put the spell on the Castle. John Cockburn He is said to have murdered his cousin and and due to his guilt has haunted the Castle he once owned. King Charles II After Charles II hd spent many different occasions at the castle in the same room it was known as King Charles bedchamber. Many people who have stayed at the castle have reported strange noises footsteps and moving furniture and no-one to be present. There has been many strange things happen and when in 1964 a paranormal research group visited the castle a glass dome disintegrated with no reason or anyone present. Professor Holbourn was gifted the bed and Death mask of Charles II and is said that the King on occasion rests in the bed. Penkaet Castle is strictly private and is only accessible by appointment. Penkaet Castle Plaques East Lothian The Plaques on the entrance posts to Penkaet Castle were sculpted by Maria Anna Angelika Kauffmann RA (30 October 1741 – 5 November 1807). Winton Castle East Lothian Winton Castle (Winton Tower House). In 1619 when the 3rd Earl of Winton built the stately home of Winton near Pencaitland. Where a Tower house (Castle) had previously stood before being burnt by English invasion. The House was purchased by Mrs Hamilton Nisbet’s of Pencaitland in 1779. It then became the property of Lady Ruthven in 1846. Constance Nisbet Hamilton became the owner in 1885 and married Henry Ogilvy of Inverquharity, Angus, in 1888. When Constance Nisbet Hamilton died in 1920 and then passed to Gilbert Ogilvy, then the property passed to Sir David Ogilvy 13th Bt. and on his death in 1992, Sir Francis Gilbert Arthur Ogilvy of Inverquharity, 14th Bt. is now owner. Earls of Winton East Lothian Robert Seton’s father died in 1585 and Robert succeeded as 6th Lord Seton. Robert Seton the 6th Lord Seton also became 1st Earl of Winton at Holyrood House, on 16 November 1600. The second Earl (1603) forfeited the Earldom after a short time due to a mental illness and his title passed to his brother George in 1607. In 1619 he built a stately home of Winton near Pencaitland. Where a Tower house had previously stood before being burnt by English invasion. George Seton 4th Earl of Winton became head of the family estates in 1650 from a young age. He was a military man and fought in many battles and commanded many troops till his death 1704. The 5th Earl was educated in Europe and did not return until circa 1710. George Seton, 5th Earl of Winton was convicted of high treason in 1716 after taking part in the Jacobite rising of 1715 supporting James Stuart. His titles were forfeit and he was condemned to death, but he managed to escape the Tower of London and returned to Europe where he later died in 1749. The Earldom returned in 1859 when Archibald William Montgomerie, 13th Earl of Eglinton and 1st Earl of Winton (1812–1861) was also created Earl of Winton in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. Market Street Edinburgh The Street is named because there was a vegetable market on the northside where the Waverley Station stands. Easy drop off and taxi pickup, Physic Garden Waverley Station, Edinburgh EH1 1BB From 1675 to 1763 the Edinburgh Physic Garden was near what is now platform 11 of Waverley Station. At the time it was close to the shores of a small lake, the Nor’ Loch. The site is now marked with a blue plaque. The garden had originally been established at Holyrood in 1670 by Sir Robert Sibbald and Sir Andrew Balfour, founder members of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. They were inspired to found it by similar gardens they had seen in France. It existed to provide medicinal plants and to teach botany to medical students. Two physicians, Robert Sibbald (1641-1722), seen below, and Andrew Balfour (1630-1694), altered the way in which medicine was practised in Edinburgh. They, with others, established the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, each was a founding Fellow and later became President. They had both travelled extensively in Europe during their studies of medicine. It is known that Sibbald met and stayed with the great Scottish gardener Morrison in Blois at the garden of the Duke of Orleans. Athelstaneford Attractions East Lothian Athelstaneford Birthplace of the Scottish Flag Athelstaneford is a small hamlet in East Lothian, with a church and a few houses and a big history. Known as Athelstoneford as on Adair’s map 1650 -1722. The Scottish flag (Saltire) a white cross on a blue background is thought to be the oldest national flag in Europe and the Commonwealth. It was during a battle in 834 AD, King Angus believes that when seeing a cloud formation of a white saltire in the sky (which was the diagonal cross that St Andrew had been crucified on) was a sign from the saints, he proclaimed if the saints help them defeat the enemy he would make St Andrew patron saint of Scotland. Scottish Flag Heritage Centre Athelstaneford East Lothian The doocot, in the Athelstaneford Church grounds houses a visitor centre, visitors can see a short audio-visual dramatization of the Battle in 834 AD prior to when the St Andrew’s Cross first appeared in the sky. The Doocot was original built 1583 by George Hepburn. A landowner of the area. Doocots were near to large house or Castles and are seen all over Scotland as they were means of getting fresh meat to the table only taking the young pigeons as they are the most tender. The Scottish Saltire Athelstaneford East Lothian The story of the Scottish Saltire starts in East Lothian with a white cross in the sky. When the St Andrew's Cross was written about circa 1380 the scots were going into battle against the English and were all to wear the white cross on a dark top. However, it was 1385 before we see any mention of the symbol to be committed to cloth. A Parliament decree that year, as Scots prepared to raid England stated that every man would bear St Andrew's cross but set against black cloth. Later in the century this symbol began to appear on coins. However blue was still not a feature. Indeed the Douglas standard carried into the Battle of Otterburn (1388) had a green background and also contained the lion as a predominant symbol. It might have been 1460 before the white Saltire against a blue background first appeared in the standard of the Edinburgh Incorporated Trades although the Saltire cross was not the predominant symbol and was vertical and on one side of the banner. Athelstaneford Parish Church Nigel Tranter Centre Athelstaneford East Lothian Athelstaneford Parish Church that can be seen today was built Circa 1885, but a church has been on this site since circa 1175. The first church was replaced in 1784. Nigel Tranter author and historian, a true Scotsman and nationalist. He was married in Athelstaneford Church in 2008. There is an Nigel Tranter Exhibition in the church. Educated at George Heriot’s School Edinburgh, he has had over 125 books published. He died at his home in Gullane East Lothian aged 90. Athelstaneford Village Hall Athelstaneford East Lothian The Village hall in Athelstaneford opened in 1929 on land donated by Sir David Alexander Kinloch, of Gilmerton. The purpose of the hall is for the benefit of the Athelstaneford Parish community as a centre for community activities. The monument in the garden in front of the village hall is a memorial to Robert Blair. Robert Blair was born at Edinburgh in 1699. He moved in 1731 to Athelstaneford where he lived until his death in February 1746. He was the minister of Athelstaneford and a poet with only one notable work, The Grave published in 1743. Athelstaneford Mains Athelstaneford East Lothian Athelstaneford Mains Farm was built by Mt Douglas circa 1850. He was well known for breeding shorthorn cattle. In the garden of the house are a number of ornaments, carved stone heads of cattle and a fountain with a scallop stone base and dolphins. A ancient Yew tree and topiary hedges. Athelstaneford Mains Barn Athelstaneford East Lothian Barnes Castle Athelstaneford Sir John Seton of Barnes Barnes Castle was being built by Sir John Seton of Garleton Castle as he had been honoured with the title of Sir John Seton of Barnes. Sir John Seton's important status to King James IV (a diplomat at Philip II of Spain’s court and later James VI’s Treasurer of the Household and a Lord of Session) and that he was to marry. He decided to build a more lavish home, a castle with courtyard and towers, that had gun loops that could defend against any potential invaders. Statue University of Edinburgh King's Buildings David Brewster was born in Jedburgh a town in the Scottish Borders in 1781 and died in Edinburgh in 1868. David Brewster was one of the most important inventors of our time inventing the kaleidoscope, lenticular stereoscope, binocular camera, polyzonal lens, lighthouse illuminator, polarimeter. He also was instrumental in the development of fibre optics and lasers. His statue can be found in the King’s Buildings, one of the University of Edinburgh campus. University of Edinburgh The original site Blackfriars' Abbey Britain is becoming the Egypt of the North. A car park in England reveals a King and another in Edinburgh reveals a Knight. This is one of the first photographs of the Knight found in High School Yards Edinburgh. The Blackfriars' (Dominican) Friary once stood on the land. King Alexander 2nd brother of King David 1st son of King Malcolm 3rd built a church on the land and bestowed a royal residence to the monks in 1130. This is also near to where the murdered body of Mary Queen of Scot's husband, Lord Darnley, was found in 1567. The monastery and church were destroyed in 1558. What is now Infirmary Street, bottom left (Lady Yester’s Church). Where the Friary stood was the Royal High School and on the right side of the street was the Royal Infirmary and finally the University moved in and has two buildings, one where the church had been and the other where the friary had stood. Skeleton in the car park The skeleton was found in 2013 during renovations at the front of the University of Edinburgh building in Infirmary Street. This was the site of the Balckfriars Abbey then the famous Edinburgh High School where many famous names in history attended. The picture taken below was the first sight of the remains since buried, possibly over 500 years ago. This would have been the site of the Blackfriars Abbey burial ground McEwan Hall University of Edinburgh Graduation Hall William McEwan (16 July 1827 – 12 May 1913) was a Scottish politician and brewer. He founded the Fountain Brewery in 1856 which became Scottish and Newcastle Breweries Ltd. William McEwan presented The McEwan Hall to the University of Edinburgh in 1897. The building is based on an ancient Greek theatre. The McEwan Hall is the Graduating Hall of the University of Edinburgh and can be found in the Central Area South Campus in Bristo Square. William McEwan MP was a benefactor of the Medical School and Graduation Hall of Edinburgh University. Above the main entrance of the McEwan Hall can be seen a semi-circle with a scene with nine figures, showing a graduation. The figures are all dressed in academic robes and the central figure is of the rector on a raised platform placing a book on a graduate’s head signify the students graduation. Mary Anderson and Emily Bovell Sophia Jex Blake Sophia Louisa Jex-Blake born 21 January 1840 became a doctor and teacher. She was the leader of a campaign to secure women access to a University education. Known as the Edinburgh Seven when she and six other women banded together and protested outside the medical school. Which gave recognition to the women wanting to study medicine and the University of Edinburgh granted them the rights to study for a degree in medicine in 1869. She was the first practising female doctor in Scotland (1878). Living in 4 Manor Place Edinburgh she erected a brass plate inscribed with Doctor Sophia Jex Blake. The little outpatient clinic in Grove Street became the Edinburgh Hospital and Dispensary for Women. This was Scotland’s first hospital for women staffed entirely by women. Sophia Jex-Blake opened Edinburgh Provident Dispensary for Women and Children at 73 Grove Street in 1878. This was the fore runner of Bruntsfield Hospital. Bruntsfield Hospital was previously Sophia Jex Blake’s home and she sold it to the Hospital committee in 1899. The renovated it and made it into the first general hospital for women. The Hospital finally closed in 1989 Elsie Inglis Graduated from Edinburgh University in 1899 after Sophia Jex-Blake who she had an ongoing rivalry with, as Sophia Jex Blake had been the leader of the Edinburgh 7 group who fought for the right of entry for women to the Edinburgh medical School. Louisa Stevenson campaigned specifically for women to be allowed medical training and to qualify as doctors. She joined with Sophia Jex Blake to found the women’s medical college. Louisa later became a member of the executive committee of the National Union of Women’s suffrage society. Charles Darwin University of Edinburgh Charles Darwin lived at 11 Lothian Street while attending the University of Edinburgh, Medical School in 1825 for a 2 year period. He was unable to pass the exams and returned home. He was born 1809 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England and died 1882 in Downe, Kent. His uncle, also Charles Darwin, died in Edinburgh at the age of 19 while attending the University in 1778. He achieved, and was given many accolades for his expertise in medical science. University of Edinburgh Famous Graduates Sir Robert Sibbald, Sir James Young Simpson, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Lord Henry Lister all graduated from the University of Edinburgh. Sir Robert Sibbald Professor of Medicine 1685 -1722 was founder of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. University of Edinburgh Polish School of Medicine The Polish School of Medicine was founded on 24 February 1941 In an agreement between the University of Edinburgh and the Polish Government-in-Exile in London. At this time it was the only Polish higher educational institution in the world. here were more than 300 Polish students attended the school, 227 achieved a medical diploma and a further 19 graduated with an MD. The Inscription on the plaque reads; In the dark days of 1941 when Polish universities were destroyed and Polish professors died in concentration camps, the University of Edinburgh established the Polish School of Medicine. Museum of Anatomy Reid Concert Hall University of Edinburgh The Reid Concert Hall named after General John Reid was born John Robertson and was educated at the University of Edinburgh. He change his name to his mother’s maiden name of Reid. On his death he left a sum of money to the University for a Chair of Music to be established and other purposes. The Chair of music was established in 1839. The Reid Concert Hall was founded in February of 1858 and is part of the Reid School of Music. The Concert Hall is named after General John Reid in his honour. The first veterinary College was in Clyde Street on the site of where the present bus station is now. The College moved to the site of Summerhall, William Dick the Veterinary Science department is now at the Bush Estate. He left 250, 19th century Greek books to the University Library which are still being used by students today. He was born in Aberdeen and studied in Germany and Italy. He was the inspiration behind the founding of the Celtic chair of the University of Edinburgh. The entrance to his house can be seen in Makars’ Court (Blackie House). Nobel Prize Winner Peter Ware Higgs University of Edinburgh Peter Ware Higgs and François Englert jointly won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013 for their discovery of the “theoretical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles”. In 2012 Peter Ware Higgs and François Englert carried out two experiments at the CERN laboratory Switzerland which confirmed the existence of the Higgs particle. About Peter Ware Higgs Professor Higgs PhD was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in May 1929 he graduated from King’s College London and continued his studies and graduated with a masters in Physics in 1952 two years later in 1954 he gained a PhD Peter Higgs was an affiliate of University of Edinburgh, at the time of his discovery. He has lived in Edinburgh since moving and is married with two sons. Peter Higgs has received many honours including a Knighthood which he rejected for personal reasons. Blue Plaque Women of Achievement Mary Crudelius Edinburgh Ladies’ Educational Association Mary Crudelius was a campaigner for women’s education and a supporter of women’s suffrage movement. She was born in 1839 to Scottish parents and was educated in Edinburgh She with another set up the Edinburgh Ladies’ Educational Association to help give equal educational opportunities for women. She died before her goal was achieved, for access to universities for women undergraduates which was achieved in 1892. Edith Mary Burnet was born in in 1888 and became Britain’s first qualified woman architect Mary Crudelius was her grandmother. Archbishop of Canterbury Archibald Campbell Tait Archibald Campbell Tait Archbishop of Canterbury from 1868 – 1882 was born in Edinburgh and this memorial is on the site of the house where he was born in December 1811. A student at Oxford University he later became a tutor at Balliol College in 1835. In 1842 he became headmaster of Rugby School. He became the Archbishop in 1868. The memorial can be found at the south end of the McEwan Hall. The inscription on the monument reads; To commemorate in his native country the piety the virtues and the wisdom of Archibald Campbell Tait Archbishop of Canterbury 1868 - 1882 Friends and admirers in Scotland have erected this monument on the site of the house which he was born. The naturalist David Attenborough called it the 12 wonder of the natural world. The Lighthouse was first used on the Bass Rock o the 1st November 1902. There are ruins of a Chapel dedicated to Saint Baldred, a monk said to have lived a life of solitude on the Bass Rock till his death in 606 A.D. The Chapel was built circa 1540 by the Lauder family who were the owners of the Bass Rock from 1316. In 1671, Charles I claimed the Bass as Royal Property and was leased out . The Bass Rock became a prison between 1672 and 1701. In 1691 four Jacobite prisoners escaped from their cells and occupied the Bass Rock for three years and fought of all the king's me who tried to reclaim the Rock. With help from the French Navy the 4 were able to raid the coastal areas of Fife and East Lothian. The occupation by the 4 finally ended in 1694 as food and fresh water had ran out. This was unknown to the King's men and the 4 negotiated to leave the Rock, only if they were given a pardon to walk free. This was agreed and they left as free men. The Bass Rock remained a State Prison until demolished in 1701 at that time . In 1706, the crown sold the Bass Rock to the Dalrymple family who are still the owners. FIDRA ISLAND This is a volcanic island created around 335 million years ago. John de Vaux a Norman nobleman built Castle Tarbet on the island of Fidrain the 12th Century. There is a lighthouse on it built in 1885 by Robert Louis Stevenson’s family as were most lighthouses around the British shores. Robert Louis Stevenson often visited the beaches at Dirleton the area known today as Yellowcraigs. Robert Louis Stevenson’s inspiration for his novel Treasure Island came from his days looking at the Island and dreaming of pirates on the high seas. LAMB ISLAND Lamb Island is a uninhabited island between the Bass Rock and Fidra Island. Baron Camilo Agasim-Pereira of Fulwood & Dirleton the previous owner sold the Lamb to Uri Geller in 2009. Uri Geller believes the layout of the 3 islands Fidra, Lamb and Craigleith match the three stars known as the 3 kings on Orion’s Belt which are linked to many ancient fables from Scottish and Egyptian history. This Island is found between the islands of Fidra and Craigleith. Uri Geller believes that Lamb hides Egyptian Treasure. CRAIGLEITH ISLAND This Island can be found close to North Berwick's harbour and its claim to fame was having the largest colony of Puffins in Britain numbering almost 30,000. It was also used in the breeding of rabbits for food. Craigleith is owned by the Dalrymple family. ISLE OF MAY The most easterly Island in the Forth and studies have revealed over 240 species of bird and 60 varieties of seaweed. This Isle was a black place when the Danes murdered ministers of the church who had tried to escape the plunder of the Danes in the mid to late 800 AD. The Oxcar Lighthouse The Oxcar Lighthouse was built by the Stevenson's and its light was seen for the first time in 1886. This was the first Northern Lighthouse to be automated in 1894. The Oxcar stands on a rock near to the Island of Inchmickery. In the background is the Pentland Hills and the largest artificial ski slop in Europe INCHMICKERY This uninhabited Island was used during both World War I and World War II the island was used as a gun emplacement and the structures still remain in place. CRAMOND ISLAND This island is the only island that can be accessed at low tide by foot. The causeway runs at the foot of a row of concrete pylons which were constructed as a submarine defence boom during the Second World War. INCHKEITH ISLAND L’Île de Dieu. (THIS ISLAND OF GOD) and L’Île des Chevaux (THIS ISLAND OF HORSES). As Inchgarvie, Inchkeith was used as a quarantine island in the 14th and 15th centuries. It was occupied by the English in the 16th century and Italian mercenaries fighting for the English in the 16th century. Mary of Guise renamed the island L’Île de Dieu. The soldiers also nicknamed it L’Île des Chevaux It is currently owned by Tom Farmer, founder of Kwik fit Garages. The Lighthouse that stands on the island was first used in 1804. INCHCOLM ISLAND. Inchcolm Island is just off the Fife coast near to the towns of Burntisland and Aberdour. This Island may have been occupied since the 6th century when St Columba is said to have visited the priory. A monesrery was built on the Inchcolm Island by David I, keeping a promise of his brother Alexander who had been saved on the island during a storm. There has been an Abbey on the island since 1235. Danes are said to have buried their dead on the island by payment in gold to King Macbeth of Scotland and a tombstone of the 10th century stands as a memorial to the Danish leader. The Abbey and island are looked after by a caretaker for Historic Scotland and is open to the public. INCHGARVIE ISLAND (The Island Fortress) Inchgarvie Island was a gift from James IV to the Dundas family which gave them the rights to build a fortification (Castle) on the Island to protect the sea ways from invaders. Inchgarvie island has been used for many things, in 1580 was an exile for the Edinburgh plague victims and the Castle was a prison from the early 1500 to the late 1600s. Inchgarvie Island supports the leg of the Forth Rail Bridge and it's history is said to go back to 832 A.D. when Angus / Oengus mac Fergus (II) King of the Picts killed Athelstan the Anglian King in a battle and to warn off intended invaders, he put Athelstan's' head on a spike on the Island for all to see. Edinburgh New Town Princes Street is one of three main streets in the original new town of Edinburgh. Princes Street has Shops on the north side and the southside is two gardens East and West Princes Street Garden. King George III, after consideration, rejected the name St. Giles Street as St Giles being the patron saint of lepers and also the name of a slum area on the edge of the City of London. It was renamed Princes Street after his sons, the Princes. Princes Street is approximately 2kms in length with shops on the north side and gardens on the south side of the street. First House in Princes Street The first house built in Princes Street was No 10 in 1769. This was Silk Mercer (haberdasher) owner Mr John Neale. Then Pooles Coffee House 1783, then Archibald Constable purchased the house in 1822. Nor’ Loch The Nor Loch stretched from under the North Bridge where the Waverley Station is now and in the west at the edge of St Cuthbert's Church, the Castle Rock and King's Stables Road. The draining of the Nor Loch was required due to the fact that it had been heavily polluted from centuries of sewage draining downhill from the Old Town. The draining of the Nor Loch began in 1759 by way of making a canal that emptied into Lochend at the back of Calton Hill. The Gardens were then laid. In the 1840s the railway was built in the valley, and Waverley Station opened in its present form in 1854. The first station was originally named Canal Street Station where Waverley Market now stands. Princes Street Gardens Princes Street Gardens is a public park in the centre of Edinburgh in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. Before the gardens were formed ( West Gardens Laid 1816-20 and East Gardens Laid 1830), a Loch (Lake) surrounded the Castle Rock, separating the two Gardens West and East is the Mound (building started 1781) which was formed from earth and rubble when the new town was under construction, it became a connection between Old and New Edinburgh. Royal Scottish Academy of Art Royal Scottish Academy of Art Mound Edinburgh The oldest and most prestigious academy of contemporary art in Scotland. The Academy is active in the promotion of young artists from Scotland’s Colleges of Art and Architecture and takes a lead role in promoting living artists in Scotland. The Celtic Cross in his memory can be seen at the east end of the church near the entrance to Princes Street Gardens Edinburgh. St John’s Scottish Episcopal Church, Daniel Sandford a 26-year-old parson from England opened a chapel in West Register Street in 1794. He was consecrated Bishop of Edinburgh in 1806. Open St John’s in 1818, designed by William Burn. He made Edward Ramsay curator in 1827 when he died in 1830 Ramsay took over. He was appointed Dean of Edinburgh in 1846. A well respected and loved man died in 1872 20,000 lined the streets for his funeral. Procession. Anne Rutherford (Mrs Walter Scott Esq) 1733 - 1819 Anne Rutherford was born in 1733 and died in 1819 her grave can be seen on the east side St John’s Church west end Edinburgh. Her father was John Rutherford and her mother Jean Swinton. The Swinton family being one of the oldest families in Scotland. Anne Rutherford was mother of Sir Walter Scott her ninth child, six of which died in infancy. Sir Walter Scott’s, grandmother was a Halliburton which gave the Scott family the hereditary right to be buried in Dryburgh Abbey. Where Walter Scott is buried with family members. Sir Henry Raeburn R.A. 1756 -1823 Sir Henry Raeburn R.A. was born in Edinburgh in 1756 and became Scotland’s foremost portrait painter. He lived in Stockbridge area north of Edinburgh. HIs studio Raeburn House where he worked is in York Place Edinburgh an extension of Queen Street which was an original part of Edinburgh’s new town. He was knighted in 1822 and was portrait painter to King George IV. His work can be seen in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and on the outside wall of the Gallery stands a statue of Sir Henry Raeburn amongst others. A memorial stone is in St John’s Church at the west end of Princes Street close to Sir Walter Scott’s mothers grave. George Burnett 1822 -1890 George Burnett Lyon King of Arms grave stone is in St John’s graveyard at the west end of Princes Street Edinburgh. George was born in 1822 son of John Burnett, Fifth Laird of Kemnay Inverurie. The family home Kemnay House would pass to Alexander the 6th Laird, George’s older brother. George became a lawyer in 1845 a member of the faculty of Advocates and was appointed Lord Lyon King of Arms in 1866. He remained in the position until his death in 1890. Lord Lyon King of Arms is the most junior of the Great Officers of State in Scotland and is the Scottish official with responsibility for regulating heraldry in that country. Lang Dykes - Princes Street From Multrees Hill on the east to Kirkbraehead (Rutland Square) on the west. This road was called the ' Lang gait,' or 'Lang dykes,' a country road walled on either side with farm lands on the north side. The main road from east to west now replaced by the New Town. The road now where Rose Street is now. Princes Street New Town Designed originally by James Craig and built between 1770 and 1823 mainly residential properties with a number of commercial properties Johnnie alker Visitor Centre 145 Princes Street originally built as residential townhouses 144-147 the last to be built in Princes Street. 1823. In 1873 the properties were transformed into a luxury Hotel (Osborne Hotel). Change of use when the Scottish Liberal Club took possession and later was changed to retail. The modernisation took place in 1935 when it became Binns Department, and now the Johnnie Walker Experience. Old Clock 1962 the Clock on the corner of Princes Street and Hope Street was erected in 1962 and twice each hour the miniature Pipers circled the base of the Clock playing the tune Scotland the Brave. This was originally a Binns department store built in 1935 for a company founded in Sunderland in 1811 by a draper called George Binns. 128 Princes Street Edinburgh Originally built in 1866. The design a grand Italian Palazzo style by Peddie and Kinnear Architects originally built as the University Club, a private gentlemen's club. With Corinthian columns and a bow window on the first floor. 123 Princes Street Originally built as a townhouse, in 1869 and in 1873 the exterior of the building was finished in a grand Victorian style 112 Princes Street The building at 112 Princes Street in Edinburgh was built between 1882 and 1884. It officially opened on 1 February 1884 as the purpose-built clubhouse for the Edinburgh Conservative Club. This building housed the Gladstone Memorial Library on the first floor. In 1978 112 -109 were joined inside to make one large store on the upper floors when completed Debenhams opened in 1981 in May 2021 Debenhams store closed. 100 Princes Street Originally built as a town house for Lady Mary Clerk of Penicuik in 1798 after her husband’s death. In 1877 it became Dejay's Hotel opened by a Frenchman Calixte Dejay in 1879 it was purchased by Albert Thiem of German heritage naming it the Windsor Hotel. It then was purchased by the over-seas League and opened as The Royal Over-Seas League Edinburgh’s first mixed-gender private members' club. 90 Prince Street Originally a town house built circa 1780 where wealthy families lived. In 1866 A jeweller purchased the retail unit on the ground floor and opened his newly founded business in Princes Street the Jeweller being James Hamilton and his nephew, Robert Inches (who was knighted in 1915). In 1887 with success more space was required and they purchase r premises at No 88. combining the stores. They then purchased 87 George Street and moved in 1952 and still remain. The upper residential floors of 90 was a Turkish Baths from 1861 until circa 1920. 61 -62 Prince Street Originally built in 1780 as a town house residence Romanes and Paterson moved here in 1884 after the building was redesigned in 1870 to what you see today. 109 - 110 Princes Street It was built between 1770 - 1800 as private residences. In 1869 it was replaced with a new building as the luxury The Grand Palace Hotel. It then became the Scottish Liberal Club in 1890 and housed the Gladstone Memorial Library including bust of William Gladstone ) on the first floor. In 2023 The Gladstone Memorial Library, was sold by the Debenhams an is now located in Church Lane, Hawarden, Flintshire, CH5 3DF (North Wales, roughly 6 miles from Chester). 97 - 98 Princes Street Built in 1786 designed by James Craig a three-story and attic stone building on the corner of Princes Street and Frederick street with a main entrance hall and reception areas to welcome their visitors. This was the first tenements (based on a large Town House) of the new town and one of the only that still remain. The ground floor area was converted into a retail unit circa 1840. 70 -71 Prince Street The original area was built as a town house by James Craig circa 1780. With its first resident Scottish legal writer and inventor John Clerk of Eldin who lived here with his family until his death in 1812. The future transformed town house into mixed use, with shops on the ground and basements this town house was demolished and rebuilt as you see it know as the Edinburgh Café built in 1887 in the North European Renaissance style. The Edinburgh Café was sold and changed into mixed use ground floor retail and upper residential. In 1922 D. S. Crawford redesigned the building into Crawford’s Tea Rooms (the place to be seen). 60 Princes Street John Dickson & Son Scottish Gun and Rifle maker opened in 1838 closed 1923. The Building was rebuilt in 1903 to what it is today, A Jacobean styled town house built for the owners Turnbull & Co retailers Opticians and Sporting Goods (fishing equipment). They moved in 1929 to 37 George Street. In 1930 J Woodhouse & Son A furniture and household goods store was here until 1960. The Upper floors were used as a Studio and occupied by a number of Photographers over many years John Menzies 61 Princes Street John Menzies moved from London to Edinburgh at the age of 25 and opened a book shop in 1833 at 61 Princes Street, Edinburgh. With in a few years it became what is now known as a newsagents, being the first to sell The Scotsman newspaper (another business still trading) over the counter. John Menzies is now Menzies Aviation and is still going strong. 48 Princes Street Jenner's Department Store (one of the world's first department stores) The original store opened in 1838 by 2 out of work drapers Charles Jenner and Charles Kennington at 47 Princes Street. The store grew with its popularity of fine goods and over time acquired 2 further premises in Princes Street and 8 in South St David Street to make it the largest department store in the United Kingdom. In early 1860s when Charles Kennington retired Charles Jenner became sole proprietor. The Store was burnt to the ground and rebuilt in 1893 by the same architect that designed the North British Railway Hotel (The Balmoral). The reopening of Jenner’s was in 1895 and was successful as an independent Department store until the House of Fraser group took over in 2005. Not surprisingly the Royal Warrant was awarded to the store in 1911 as the Royals at the time were frequent customers 43 (No.42 - 46) Prince Street As building from the 1770's this block were town houses until 1883 one of the only survivors. In 1800 it changed to commercial on the (ground floor) and offices above. In 1848 No. 43 was Scotland's first temperance Hotel. (Waverley Hotel) Owned by the Cranston family until 1953. It Became the Old Waverley Hotel in 1868 as the Cranston's' opened a further hotel the New Waverley Hotel. In 1883 No.42 - 46 were demolished to what you see today. 30 Princes Street The Forsyth Armillary Sphere Princes Street Edinburgh First steel framed Building in Scotland. An icon of the Edinburgh skyline for over one hundred years. This corner building was the first to be built with a full steel-frame in Scotland date 1906. The corner store features the Forsyth Armillary Sphere which has the signs of the zodiac around the centre with 3 Gilt cherub figures holding the sphere in place. 20 Prince Street No. 19 and No. 20 were rebuilt in 1837 Victorian Town Houses The Royal British Hotel was later Built on the site in 1899 North British Station Hotel (The Balmoral Hotel ) Edinburgh The North British Station Hotel (The Balmoral) opened for Business in 1902 and is positioned next to the Waverley Station Between Waverley Bridge and the North Bridge, which gives direct access to Edinburgh’s old town, The Royal Mile, The Castle and The Palace of Holyrood House (Holyrood Palace). Directly behind the hotel is Calton Hill. The Hotel is at the east end of Princes Street, one of the most famous and picturesque streets in the world. The clock has historically been set 5 minutes fast giving rail travellers the illusion that they are late for their train. The site it stands on is where the first ever hotel in Edinburgh stood. The first hotel being The Crown in 1811 and then changed to Royal Eagle and Prince Regent before being demolished to make way for modernisation and the building of the present hotel. Edinburgh’s Waverley Mall and Waverley Train Station The Waverley Train Station entrance in Princes Street is one of 4 entrances into the Waverley rail Station which is below street level. The Station was built in 1854 and is the main rail station in Edinburgh where you can travel in all direction with a direct line to London with a journey time of just over 4 hours. There are trains to Highlands, Glasgow, the Scottish Borders all points north and south. Original Canal Street Station Register House Multrees Hill The Street's name Multrees Walk is derived from the family Montrays who lived here in the reign James V. The hill taking its name from the family. The hill was on the highest point before Calton hill and was used for hangings and displaying the dead on poles as a deterant to others. Later the area of Multrees Hill, was developed into a small village of workshops prior to the new town and North Bridge being Built. Register House Princes Street Edinburgh Register House can be found at the foot of North Bridge Edinburgh built on what was at the time called Multrees Hill. It was opened in the 1790 and New Register House on the west side of the building in West Register Street was completed in the 1858. The buildings were built to store records of registry (births, deaths and marriages) and is also where the Tartan registry is now housed. Directly outside Register House can be found the Duke of Wellington’s statue which was erected in 1852 in memory of the Battle of Waterloo. Waterloo Place leading to the Calton Hill is also named in memory of the Battle of Waterloo which took place in 1815. George Wishart George Wishart age 33, died 1 March 1546, a Scottish Protestant Reformer and one of the early Protestant martyrs burned at the stake as a heretic. Walter Milne Walter Milne was the last Protestant martyr to be burned in Scotland before the Scottish Reformation changed the country from Catholic to Presbyterian. He was burned at the stake for heresy outside Deans Court, St Andrews, in April 1558 at the age of 82. This was the oldest known area of where there is evidence of human settlement in Scotland (8400 B.C.). Cramond was also the first area the residents were called commuters, as the new railway built in 1894 would take the residence of the area to Edinburgh City to work. A previous emperor Antoninus Pius also tried to conquer the Scots but gave up after 30 years about in 140 AD. The Romans failed in their attempts to conquer Scotland and all they left were ruins, walls, roads and bridges which can still be seen today. Cramond Heritage Cramond Heritage Museum The Maltings Cramond Heritage Trust, The Maltings 6 Riverside Cramond is run by local volunteers. The area is believed to be the oldest continuously occupied settlement in Scotland dating back to 8500 b.c. The Law family purchased from the Napier’s Circa 1660 John Law the son was said to be the first ever millionaire. William Reid became the owner of Lauriston Castle in 1902 and modernised it with plumbing and electricity. He died leaving Lauriston Castle to his wife and on her death she left the castle and land to Scotland with one stipulation, the house and contents were to remain unaltered. Lauriston Castle is still decorated and furnished as it would have been in 1926. With furnishings dating back to the first owners. There is in Lauriston Castle's a Courtyard Café.
