Cockburn Street Edinburgh New Town a winding street that joins Edinburgh's Royal Mile at the High Street to Waverley Bridge Edinburgh's main Rail Station. With shops, pubs, restaurants, cafes and accommodation. Cockburn Street Edinburgh (Lord Cockburn Street) Lord Cockburn Street was built as an access to the Waverley Bridge Road at Waverley Rail Station from the High Street near to the Tron Kirk. The Plans for Cockburn Street were submitted over a lengthy period circa 1850 and was finally completed in 1859. Lord Cockburn Street was named after Lord Cockburn who was one of the most respected Gentlemen of Edinburgh. He Died in 1854 and a Carved Stone of his Head and Shoulders are above No1-3 Cockburn Street now the Edinburgh Military Tattoo Offices. Lord Henry Cockburn The Edinburgh Military Tattoo Office was originally built as a hotel (The Cockburn hotel built circa 1862). The carving above door of a head is Lord Cockburn with gilt writing MacPherson on lintel. (Previous owner) Lord Cockburn was a conservationist and saved many important buildings in Edinburgh. The street is named after him. Lord Henry Cockburn died in 1854 at the age of 74. A conservationist the Cockburn Association which was established in 1875 was named after Lord Henry Cockburn. A statue of Lord Henry Cockburn stands in the north-east corner of Parliament Hall in the High Street Edinburgh. When Cockburn Street was built (circa 1859) it cut through many old closes, which evidence of can be seen in Old Fleshmarket Close where the smallest pub in Edinburgh can be found on the north side of the severed close. Craig’s Close Edinburgh The access to Craig’s Close from the High Street was closed when the Council offices were built in 1932. There were two parts to Craig’s Close, High Street – Cockburn Street (closed) and Cockburn Street – Market Street which is still open. Craig’s Close was the site of The Isle of Man Arms. The Edinburgh Cape Club’s main meeting place. The Close was named after John Craig, wright and Burgess of Edinburgh who was the 3rd husband of Ann Hamilton who owned the lands . A town Councillor. Scotsman Newspaper Building Cockburn Street Edinburgh The most prominent building in Lord Cockburn Street was and still is The Scotsman Building where the Scotsman newspaper was published and printed after moving from the High Street. The New Council Chamber was opened 19th January 1904 by the Right Honourable Sir Robert Cranston Lord Provost Steps to High Street Warriston’s Steps The Steps from Cockburn Street to Warriston’s Close in the High Street were built when the Municipal Building was built circa 1903. This gave a direct link to the High Street City Chambers. Near the top of the steps is Writers’ Court and a plaque where John Knox’s manse stood. Further up is the entrance to Real Mary King’s Close. Pencaitland Attractions East Lothian Pencaitland East Lothian Pencaitland became a burgh of barony in 1695. There are two parts to Pencaitland Western and Eastern Pencaitland separated by the River Tyne. The Western side has the older houses and the main part of the old village where the eastern side has predominantly newer housing The old school house built i 1820. There are wood walks and many things to see in Pencaitland with its local hostelry three nearby Castles and Glenkinchie Distillery you can spend a great day out here. Pencaitland Mercat Cross East Lothian Pencaitland Mercat Cross was erected circa 1695 when by act of parliament the burgh can have a cross and a marketplace. Pencaitland has been said to be where body snatchers (resurrectionists) were caught and put in jougs (manacles) before receiving punishment from the crowd of villagers. Pencaitland Belfry Cottage and Old Schoolhouse East Lothian The first school and schoolhouse circa 1820, Pencaitland stands on the corner across from the Pencaitland mercat cross. On the Stone above the front porch a boy sites reading a book on the stone an inscription reads: “Given by John McEwan | To Robert Focco teacher | Wm’s Son Gave It to Mrs Trevelyan”. Pencaitland Bridges East Lothian The River Tyne flows under two bridges the old bridge between western and eastern Pencaitland was built circa 1500 to connect the two parts of the village seen below left. The other bridge is to the east on the way out of Pencaitland. On the south side are the arms of the Sinclair family and the date 1510 Pencaitland Temperance Hall East Lothian The Trevelyan Hall (Temperance Hall) in Wester Pencaitland was erected in 1883 by Mrs. Trevelyan in memory of her husband, Arthur Trevelyan, a well-known benefactor of Pencaitland who died in 1880. Arthur Trevelyan also had the Tyneholm Cottages and Trevelyan Cottage and Post Office built 1881. Pencaitland War Memorial East Lothian Pencaitland War Memorial was erected after the First World War in memorial to the fallen from the village. There is a plaque at the base of the monument to the memory of those who fell in the Second World War. Pencaitland Parish Church East Lothian Pencaitland Parish Church was consecrated in 1242 and was built prior to that but when is uncertain. There is a date on the lintel of the west door 1631 which is when the present church was erected. It is possible the church as most were extended and renovated at different periods but for certain a church stood here prior to 1242. In 1127 the Bishop of St. Andrews claimed jurisdiction over all the churches in the Lothians and prior to 1018 East Lothian was part of Northumbria Penkaet Castle Pencaitland East Lothian The Baronial home of Woodhead (or in old Celtic Penkaet) now known as Penkaet Castle built circa 1485. Sold to Adam de Crichton in 1506. The next owner was Alexander Cockburn who lived here till his death in 1579. Sir George Cockburn of Ormiston then purchased the barony before selling it to the Pringle family in 1636. The Castle was passed on in 1681 to John Lauder of Newington, Edinburgh. The Castle was empty for many years and became uninhabitable until in 1922 with a new owner an author and traveller, Professor John Bernard Holbourn renovated the property bringing it back to its former glory. Penkaet Castle Ghosts that Haunt the Castle With old Castles come the ghosts and murders and Penkaet is no different and boasts of three ghosts. Alexander Hamilton He was burned at the stake on Castlehill, Edinburgh for witchcraft, after putting a spell on Penkaet Castle, the Lady of the Castle and her daughter were found dead days later. It was later found that he had murdered them. It is said he roams the grounds at the gate where he put the spell on the Castle. John Cockburn He is said to have murdered his cousin and and due to his guilt has haunted the Castle he once owned. King Charles II After Charles II hd spent many different occasions at the castle in the same room it was known as King Charles bedchamber. Many people who have stayed at the castle have reported strange noises footsteps and moving furniture and no-one to be present. There has been many strange things happen and when in 1964 a paranormal research group visited the castle a glass dome disintegrated with no reason or anyone present. Professor Holbourn was gifted the bed and Death mask of Charles II and is said that the King on occasion rests in the bed. Penkaet Castle is strictly private and is only accessible by appointment. Penkaet Castle Plaques East Lothian The Plaques on the entrance posts to Penkaet Castle were sculpted by Maria Anna Angelika Kauffmann RA (30 October 1741 – 5 November 1807). Winton Castle East Lothian Winton Castle (Winton Tower House). In 1619 when the 3rd Earl of Winton built the stately home of Winton near Pencaitland. Where a Tower house (Castle) had previously stood before being burnt by English invasion. The House was purchased by Mrs Hamilton Nisbet’s of Pencaitland in 1779. It then became the property of Lady Ruthven in 1846. Constance Nisbet Hamilton became the owner in 1885 and married Henry Ogilvy of Inverquharity, Angus, in 1888. When Constance Nisbet Hamilton died in 1920 and then passed to Gilbert Ogilvy, then the property passed to Sir David Ogilvy 13th Bt. and on his death in 1992, Sir Francis Gilbert Arthur Ogilvy of Inverquharity, 14th Bt. is now owner. Earls of Winton East Lothian Robert Seton’s father died in 1585 and Robert succeeded as 6th Lord Seton. Robert Seton the 6th Lord Seton also became 1st Earl of Winton at Holyrood House, on 16 November 1600. The second Earl (1603) forfeited the Earldom after a short time due to a mental illness and his title passed to his brother George in 1607. In 1619 he built a stately home of Winton near Pencaitland. Where a Tower house had previously stood before being burnt by English invasion. George Seton 4th Earl of Winton became head of the family estates in 1650 from a young age. He was a military man and fought in many battles and commanded many troops till his death 1704. The 5th Earl was educated in Europe and did not return until circa 1710. George Seton, 5th Earl of Winton was convicted of high treason in 1716 after taking part in the Jacobite rising of 1715 supporting James Stuart. His titles were forfeit and he was condemned to death, but he managed to escape the Tower of London and returned to Europe where he later died in 1749. The Earldom returned in 1859 when Archibald William Montgomerie, 13th Earl of Eglinton and 1st Earl of Winton (1812–1861) was also created Earl of Winton in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. The present is Hugh Archibald William Montgomerie, 19th Earl of Eglinton 7th Earl of Winton. Glenkinchie Distillery Visitor Centre Glenkinchie Distillery is owned by the drinks conglomerate Diageo. Place to Visit Myths Thomas the Rhymer Thomas was a poet and someone that could predict the future. His home was in Earlston in the Scottish Borders. The legend tells that Thomas fell asleep beneath a tree at the foot of the Eildon Hills. When he woke he saw the vision of a shining Lady on a Grey horse, this was the Queen of the Fairies and she entranced him and took him away to Fairyland. He remained there for what he thought had been three days, but was actually 7 years. When he left, the Queen gave him the gift of speaking the truth and told him many prophecies of great events in Scottish history. One of the events he prophesied that there would be a bridge over the River Tweed which would be visible from the Eildon Tree. The Fairy Queen also told Thomas that she would return one day, so if you feel weary rest under the tree and you never can tell what will happen next. Thomas was a real person and lived in the 1200s and his rhymes have been popular for hundreds of years. His rhymers are the earliest examples of Scottish Poetry. James Gregory's Meridian Line St Andrews James Gregory’s Meridian is now marked on South Street by a brass marker across the pavement outside the University of St Andrews’ King James Library together with a plaque on the wall. In 1673, almost 200 years prior to the international adoption of GMT, a Scottish astronomer named James Gregory laid down Europe’s first meridian on the floor of his laboratory at the University of St Andrews. He used this line in conjunction with a metal sight fixed outside one of the windows, which he lined up with a post on the horizon exactly due south, to make astronomical observations. Gregory's Scottish meridian runs almost twelve minutes behind Greenwich meridian time, as it is several degrees to the west which, explained Dr John Amson of St Andrews University, means the world could have been running on a different time scale: 'The world could today be running on STAMT (St Andrews Mean Time) and not GMT. Cairngorms Dark Sky Park Star Gazing - Cairngorms National Park Richmond Hall, Tomintoul The Great Glen Tobar Nan Cean Well of the Heads Near the shore of Loch Oich outside a local shop you can see the Well of the Seven Heads. A fascinating column at the pinnacle a hand holding a large dagger and around it seven stone carved heads. The story goes that on 25th September, 1663 the Chieftain of Clan MacDonald of Keppoch, Alexander MacDonald, and his brother Ranald, were murdered by rivals within their clan. Two years passed with no just handed out for their killers. At that time the Privy Council in Edinburgh, issued letters of “Fire and Sword” against the murderers. Ian Lom and the MacDonald’s of Sleat sought “ample and summary vengeance”. They caught the seven murderers and decapitated them. Ian Lom on his journey, taking the seven heads to Invergarry Castle, he stopped to wash the blood from the heads to make them more presentable to the clan chief of the MacDonald’s of Glengarry. The Heads were then taken to Edinburgh, where they were displayed on Pikes at the Gallows between Edinburgh and Leith. The story has been ratified, when the seven graves with headless bodies were exhumed. In 1812 the monument was erected by the clan chief of the MacDonnell (Clan MacDonnell of Glengarry is a Scottish clan and is a branch of the Clan Donald) to remember the crime and punishment handed out. Lochaber Commando Memorial Dedicated to the men of the original British Commando Forces raised during World War II. Situated around a mile from Spean Bridge, it overlooks the training areas of the Commando Training Depot established in 1942 at Achnacarry Castle. Unveiled in 1952 by the Queen Mother, it is one of Scotland’s best-known monuments, both as a war memorial and as a tourist attraction offering views of Ben Nevis and Aonach Mòr. Neptune's Staircase Banavie A staircase lock comprising eight locks on the Caledonian Canal. Built by Thomas Telford between 1803 and 1822, it is the longest staircase lock in Britain. Port Na Craig Inn Established in 1650, Located on the banks of the river Tummel at the Rob Roy Way, a famous walk from Drymen to Pitlochry. Port Na Craig ferry Established in the 12th Century by the monks of Coupar Angus, who were gifted the land of Fonab. There was a ferry crossing over the river to the village of Moulin. To ensure a safe crossing, from Moulin people would drop a coin in to St Brides Wishing Well (now closed). The ferry no longer runs, The Port-Na-Craig Bridge was built and the last ferry crossing was on Empire Day 1913 when the bridge was opened by the Duchess of Atholl. John O Groats Dunnet Head Caithness KW1 4YR John O Groats on the north east point of Scotland’s mainland follow the A9 from Stirling or Perth through Inverness to Latheron in Caithness which then joins the A99, then follow the A99 to the end of the road and mainland Scotland you are at John O Groats. The Brahan Seer Scottish Nostradamus The Brahan Seer was the Nostradamus of Scotland. He was gifted with the ability of seeing events in the fut ure. His prophecies are still quoted to this day. To have “Second Sight”, or two sights, is an ability to see both into two worlds at the same time. Always thought by the folks of Scotland as an affliction or curse. The Brahan Seer, Coinneach (a variant transcription of the name Kenneth) Mackenzie, was born at Baile-na-Cille on the Isle of Lewis, circa 1600 and lived at the shores of Loch Ussie near to Dingwall in the Scottish Highlands. Legend has it that it was his mother that passed the sight to his son (Coinneach) Kenneth. At a graveyard one night when ghosts were known to roam the earth, his mother encountered the ghost of a Danish Princess on her way back to her grave. In order to allow her to pass back into the grave, Kenneth’s mother demanded that the Princess should pay a tribute, and asked that her son should be given the second sight. The legend goes that later that day, Kenneth found a small stone with a hole in the middle, through which he would look and see visions. The prophetic visions that have come true in the years after his death The Battle of Culloden (1746) He spoke on the moors, and his words were recorded. “Oh! Drum Ossie, thy bleak moor shall, ere many generations have passed away, be stained with the best blood of the Highlands. Glad am I that I will not see the day, for it will be a fearful period; heads will be lopped off by the score, and no mercy shall be shown or quarter given on either side.” He predicted, The lochs in the Great Glen would become one . This became fact when the Caledonian Canal was constructed in 1822. He talked of great black bridle less horses belching fire and steam. This became fact in the 1860’s when railways with steam trains were built throughout the Highlands. The North Sea oil fields were foretold: When Kenneth said “A black rain will bring riches to Aberdeen.” He also spoke of; When Scotland would once again have its own Parliament. But it would only come to pass when men could walk dry shod (without wetting ones boots) from England to France . First men to travel from England and France under the sea. On 1 December 1990, Englishman Graham Fagg and Frenchman Phillippe Cozette The Scottish Parliament reconvened on 12 May 1999 after it was dissolved on the 28th April 1707. He spoke of how fire and water would run beneath the streets of Inverness and into every dwelling. Gas and water pipes were laid down in Inverness circa 1825. Kenneth made a prediction that was to cost him his life. The Earl of Seaforth’s wife Isabella, was said to be one of the ugliest women in Scotland asked Kenneth for news of her husband, who was visiting Paris. Kenneth confirmed that the Earl was in good health but refused to elaborate further. This enraged Isabella, who demanded that he tell her everything or she would have him killed. Kenneth told her that her husband was with another woman, fairer than herself, and he foretold the end of the Seaforth family line. Isabella was so incensed by this that she had (Coinneach) Kenneth seized and thrown head-first into a barrel of boiling tar. The Brahan Seer Stone Slab There is a stone slab near the light house at Chanonry Point on the Moray Firth, near Fortrose, that is said to mark the spot where he died. The inscription reads: “This stone commemorates the legend of Coinneach Odhar better known as the BRAHAN SEER – Many of his prophesies were fulfilled and tradition holds that his untimely death by burning in tar followed his final prophecy of the doom of the House of Seaforth.” The Brahan Seer Celtic Stone A Celtic stone stands at the bridge across the Black Water River at the Rogie Falls, Strathpeffer Ross-shire The Seer said that if the stone fell down three times, then Loch Ussie would flood the valley below so that ships could sail to Strathpeffer. The stone has fallen down twice: it is now set in concrete. Fonab Castle Pitlochry Scotland Once home to the Sandeman Family the leading Port and Sherry wine businesses in the world. In 1790 when George Sandeman (1765-1841), the 25-year-old son of a Scottish cabinetmaker asked his father for money to set up as a wine merchant in London. Fonab Castle beside Loch Faskally and Ben Vrackie, on the once Port-na-Craig Estate which was purchased by George Glas Sandeman in 1890 who built a magnificent Home. History of the name Fonab can be seen as early as the 12th century. Fonab Castle was completed in 1892. The house transferred through the family and in 1915 till the war end in 1918 the house was a British Red Cross hospital. From 1928-46 Colonel and Mrs Kinglake Tower were occupants until they sold Fonab Castle to North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board who renamed it 'Port-na-Craig House'. The House was left by the SHEB abandoned until in 2002, when the Clark family purchased the property and changed the name back to its origin name of Fonab Castle. After many years of conservation and rebuilding the Clark family opened Fonab Castle as a luxury hotel in 2013.

A stone bridge replaced the original wooden structure circa 1460. The Devorgilla Bridge named after Lady Devorgilla of Galloway niece of William the Lion. Her son was to become king (John Baliol) in 1292. She had many structures and buildings built, one of which is the Sweetheart Abbey circa 1274 the last Cistercian abbey to be founded in Scotland. Lady Devorgilla was one of the most influential women of her age in Britain born 1210 and died 1290. Buried in Sweetheart Abbey near Dumfries. Old Bridge House The House at the end of Devorgilla Bridge also known as "The House at Bridgend" was built in 1660 and is the oldest remaining house in Dumfries. The House has had many uses a meeting hall, house, tavern and now a museum with many interesting artefacts. Savings Bank Founder Dr Henry Duncan was the founder of the Savings Bank Movement in 1810. Born in 1774 he moved to Ruthwell in 1799 as the Parish minister. The first Savings bank was opened eleven years later in the present cottage were the museum is situated in Ruthwell, Dumfries, DG1 4NN today. The savings bank he opened was the forerunner for the TSB and all savings bank worldwide. Robert Burns Dumfries Robert Burns first moved to Dumfries when he came on the visit in 1787. Dumfries Town Council made him an honorary Burgess. In May 1793 the family moved to a better quality house in Mill Street now called Burns Street where he wrote songs which included “my love is like a red, red Rose” and “man’s a man for all that” His days in Dumfries were spent as an excise man usually dressed in a decent suit of dark clothes. He had a distinguished head with large dark brown eyes and a high forehead, his features were hard and he had a slight stoop. At nearly 5 foot 10 ins (1.8 m) in height he was well known around town. Robert Burns died in Dumfries in his house in Mill Street on the 21st July 1796. Robert Burns and family lived in Bank Street Dumfries. Jean Armour and Son Statue Robert Burns Statue Dumfries The Robert Burns statue erected to his memory in Dumfries was unveiled by Lord Roseberry on the 6th April 1882 and is sculptured from Sicilian Marble. Jean Armour was born in Mauchline Ayrshire on (25 February 1765 and died 26 March 1834). She married Robert Burns on 5 August 1788. She was known as the "Belle of Mauchline". They moved to Ellisland Farm where they stayed for 5 years until 1791 when they moved to Dumfries, where they stayed till their deaths. Greyfriars Church Dumfries On what was the site of Dumfries Castle which was destroyed circa 1320 the First Church was built in 1772. The present Greyfriars Church was built in 1868, which overlooks the site of the famous murder in the original Church of the Greyfriars, committed by Robert the Bruce over the crown of Scotland, John III Comyn Lord of Badenoch in 1306. This was the beginning of the war of Independence that finish at Bannockburn. The plaque on the site of where the murder took place is at the bus stop across from the Robert Burns Statue. On one side of the pedestal is a device representing a female figure leaning on an urn and on another side of the same is the following inscription Plaque inscription This Column Sacred to the memory of Charles Duke of Queensberry and Dover Was erected by The County of Dumfries. As a monument of their veneration for the character of that illustrious nobleman: Whose exalted virtues rendered him the ornament of society and whose numerous acts of public beneficence and private charity endeared him to his country Ob. 22nd Oct. 1778; Aet. 80". Midsteeple Dumfries The town-house or Midsteeple, which was built in 1705-8. There are two carved panels. One is of the royal arms of Scotland, with unicorn supporters. The lower panel shows the winged figure of St Michael, patron of the burgh. These carvings are circa 1650. There were a further 2 built into the wall in 1909 which were from the old prison circa 1580. One has the initials H R (Herbert Raining) and R MK (Robert MacKinnell) with a pair of shackles and a bow and arrow and the word BAILLIES, who held that office in the 1570s. The other shows a shield bearing a chevron between three fleurs-de-lys, with the town 's motto A LORJ BURNE. 1830, and a cast-iron distance-plate of 1827. Last Hanging in Scotland Buccleuch Street Dumfries The last man to be publicly hanged in Scotland, was Robert Smith on Buccleuch Street Dumfries 12 May 1868. His death mask is on public display in Dumfries Museum. Mary Timney (27-year-old) on the 29 April 1862, also at Buccleuch Street in Dumfries was the last woman to be publicly executed in Scotland. This is where Robert Burns was buried and now is where his Mausoleum can be seen. The monument inside the mausoleum is the statue of the Muse Coila (Coila was the muse of Robert Burns, who he created as a poetic device for his poem The Vision) She floats above Burns with his plough. Robert Burns and his to sons were reinterred (1817) under the floor of the new mausoleum. His wife Jean Armour is also buried in the mausoleum ( March 1834) , and his son Robert, (May 1857). Robert Burns Original Grave Camera Obscura and Museum The highest point in the town of Dumfries Corbelly Hill was once in a separate area known as Maxwelltown. Where a large windmill stood, built in 1798. A Camera Obscura was installed in 1836 and opened 2 years later. This is said to be the oldest working Camera Obscura in the world. The museum was built in 1862 using the windmill tower as the Camera Obscura. The museum was attached to the tower and houses many interesting exhibits including a bicycle made in 1839 by Kirkpatrick Macmillan the inventor of the rear-wheel driven bicycle. Also a cast of the original skull of Robert the Bruce from Dunfermline Abbey. Outside the museum is a cannon and a Open octagonal painted stone Tuscan temple to John Sinclair with statues of Old Mortality And His Pony. Dr John Sinclair On 25th October 1840, Dr. John Sinclair was thrown from a horse drawn gig between Southampton and Titchfield and died of his injuries. He was buried in the Portsmouth Garrison Chapel graveyard. The previous day he had won a raffle for a statue of Old Mortality and his Pony, based on the characters in the Sir Walter Scott novel of the same name. His parents erected the statue as a memorial, which can still be seen as part of Dumfries Museum in Scotland Russian cannon captured during the Crimean War circa 1855. Maxwelltown War Memorial The inscription on the front is, “Pro Patria in memory of the men of Maxwelltown and the Parish of Troqueer who fell in the Great War 1914-1919.” Private James Mackenzie V.C. 2ND BATTALION SCOTS GUARDS, KILLED IN ACTION AT ROUGES BANCS, FRANCE, 19TH DECEMBER, 1914, AGED 27, WHILE RESCUING A WOUNDED COMRADE UNDER HEAVY FIRE. FOR A SIMILAR ACT OF CONSPICUOUS BRAVERY ON THE SAME DAY HE WAS AWARDED THE VICTORIA CROSS. James Edward Tait VC MC James Edward Tait (1888-1918) was born on 27th May 1888 in Maxwelltown (Dumfries) James Tait received the Military Cross for his conduct on 9th April 1917, the day the Canadian Corps attacked and captured Vimy Ridge in France. Lieutenant James Tait earned the Victoria Cross posthumously for his actions while serving with the 78th Infantry Battalion, CEF during the first four days of the Battle of Amiens, 8th to 11th August 1918. He joined the Russian navy in 1788 and also attacked Leith at the head of a French Force flying the American flag . In 1777 sailing “ the Ranger “ his capture of the British vessel “Drake “ off the Irish Coast is America’s first recorded naval triumph . He was honoured by the US congress and Ennobled by the French before dying in Paris aged 45 and was later re-interred in Annapolis, Maryland , USA. Fife Attractions Robert Burns Centre Burgh Church Norway House Dumfries Academy Lochfoot Fountain John Paul Jones Birthplace Museum John Paul Jones was a Revolutionary War hero known as the father of the U.S. Navy. Born in Arbigland Kirkcudbright Scotland in 6th July 1747, John Paul joined the British Merchant Marine at the age of 13 at the age of 27 he fled to America as he murdered a sailor in self-defence on the island of Tobago. Arriving in America he added Jones to his name to hide his identity. He joined the Continental Navy and became the scourge of the British Navy, when the Continental Navy disbanded in 1787 he joined the Russian Navy. He ended his life in France and died in Paris in 1792. His remains were eventually found in a disused cemetery in Paris and return to America. He lies at rest in a tomb inside the chapel of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. There has been 5 US naval war ships named after John Paul Jones the last being the USS John Paul Jones (DDG-53) built in 1991.

Magdalen Chapel Cowgate Edinburgh was completed in 1542 by Janet Rynd after her husbands death in 1538. Michael Macquhane a burgess silk merchant and money lender was one of Edinburgh's leading citizens. The Hammermen took over the property in 1547. Magdalen Chapel Cowgate Edinburgh Attractions Magdalen Chapel Cowgate Edinburgh The Magdalen Chapel was built by Michael Macquhane and his wife Michael died in 1537 and his wife managed the completion of the chapel in 1542. The Magdalen Chapel was a chapel and Hospital for the poor. The Incorporation of Hammermen took over the running of the building in 1547. On the plaque above the door show their initials MM. JR. and the date of Janet Rynd's death 1553. The Chapel was a place of worship and also the guild Hall for the incorporation of Hammermen. The Hammermen were metal workers and tradesmen who became the trustees of the Chapel and attached building a hospital, which is now a hostel. Inside the Chapel is an amazing stain glass window which features the Royal Arms of Scotland and the Arms of Mary of Guise, the mother of Mary Queen of Scots. Also still in the Chapel is the Deacon of the Hammermen's Guild of Edinburgh chair which was made in 1708. There are many other artefacts from Scottish history on display in the Chapel please arrange a visit as there is much to see. Magdalen Chapel Doorway Lintel The Magdalen Chapel has a carved tablet above the entrance with initials and a date. there were also to carved figures which can be seen inside the chapel, One is of a bedeman (poor man) and the other is a Hammerman The two figures depict the poor man holding out his hand to the Hammerman for help. The inscription above the door reads; HE THAT HATH PITIE VPON THE POORE LENDETH UNTO THE LORD AND THE LORD WILL RECOMPENCE HIM THAT WHICH HE HETH GIUEN PRO: XIX. VERS XVII. Magdalen Chapel Hammermen Guild Chair. The Magdalen Chapel Incorporation of Hammermen's Guild Chair. This chair was where the Deacon would sit at meetings of the Hammermen. The Chair was made by Thomas Heron in 1708 at the cost of 33.13 Scots. It was restored in 2000. The Hammermen can trace the Deacons as far back as 1494. The coat of arms of the Hammermen can be seen on the back of the chair, a hammer with a crown above. Magdalen Chapel Chandelier The Chandelier that can be seen above the Deacon of Guild's Chair in the Magdalen Chapel was presented to the Magdalen Chapel in 1813 by the then Deacon William Armstrong. The Brods are inscribed panels which can be seen around the walls of the Magdalen Chapel and are records of gifts or legacies to the Chapel from the patrons. The first panel recorded in 1555. Magdalen Chapel Brods William Armstrong Magdalen Chapel Edinburgh Coat of Arms A painting hangs on the wall of the Magdalen Chapel of the Edinburgh Coat of Arms dated 1720. It was not until 1732 the coat of arms were formally granted to Edinburgh. The coat of arms were changed in 1975. The words on the scroll 'NISI DOMINUS FRUSTRA' have been associated with Edinburgh since 1647. The translation is 'Except the Lord in Vain'. A maiden stands to the right and a doe to the left of a Shield with Edinburgh Castle centre. The words on the plaque read; 'Insignia Civitatis Edinensis' translated means 'Excellent City Edinburgh'. Magdalen Chapel Scottish Reformation Society Protestant Institute There are two large portraits in the Magdalen Chapel, Rev. Dr James Begg and Rev James Aitken Wylie both ministers in the Free Church of Scotland. Rev Begg was the founder of the Scottish Reformation Society and the Protestant Institute. Rev. Wylie author of The History of Protestantism and a professor of the Protestant Institute. The Protestant religion is described by any group or religion that had its basis originally in the Catholic Church. Magdalen Chapel, Hammermen's Founders Panel . The panel high on the wall of the Magdalen Chapel main hall is a carved panel preserved displaying the crest of the founders surmounted by the crown and hammer. The Hammermen's insignia of their craft. The panel dates from 1624. Magdalen Chapel, Stain Glass Window Inside the Chapel is an amazing stain glass window which features The Lion Rampant, the Royal Arms of Scotland and the Arms of Mary of Guise, the mother of Mary Queen of Scots 1624. The coat of arms of Michael Macquhane founder of the Chapel and the arms of Michael and his wife Janet Rynd. This is the only pre-reformation stain glass in Scotland in tact. Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society moved into 39 Cowgate in 1858 which was then owned by the Scottish Reformation Society. The EMMS (Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society and Livingstone Institute) rebuilt in 1877 and operated a dispensary for the local people. The building occupied from the corner of Candlemakers' Row to the Magdalen Chapel. Above the entrance on the corner are 13 carved heads Livingstone Medical Missionary Memorial Plaque The Rev. Leith Links Edinburgh Where the Rules of Golf Were First Written The beginning of golf to rules was when John Rattray wrote the 13 rules in a book and signed them. Not discovered until 1937 when a member of the Company of Gentlemen Golfers at Edinburgh, on looking through old minutes of previous club meetings found rules written at the back of a book. The book contained now to be known as the original rules of golf signed by John Rattray the club captain at that time 7th March 1744. Leith Links John Rattray Surgeon Sportsman & Jacobite John Rattray's Statue stands next to three stones with bronze plaques. The inscriptions on the plaques read; John Rattray (1707-1771) signed the original rules of golf drawn up in March 1744. Eleven golfers competed in this first “open’’ golf tournament played over Leith Links on 2nd April that year. Edinburgh Town Council enacted regulations dated 7th March, demanded written rules and commissioned 1 Silver Club as the prize. Rattray won and the Gentlemen Golfers 13 Rules Articles & Laws in Playing of Golf still form the basis of today’s global game. As winner Rattray became Captain of the golf for the year and first fixed a silver ball with his initials to the silver club. He won again in 1745. That Year however, Rattray’s life took a dramatic turn. As a surgeon and Jacobite he became surgeon general to Bonnie Prince Charlie was captured in Culloden and set to hang. Rescue came when his golfing companion Lord Duncan Forbes of Culloden gained his release. Rattray played and won in 1752. Leith is the birthplace of competitive golf, first home of the Gentlemen Golfers who wrote the original rules and witness to John Rattray’s inaugural silver club victory. The silver club remains the oldest golf trophy in the world, still played for today. The Gentlemen Golfers are now known as The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. The competition was contested over Leith Links every year until 1828 when play moved to Musselburgh and in 1892, to Muirfield. Scotland's Golf Course Map Leith Links The Original Rules of Golf Articles & Laws in Playing of Golf 1 You must tee your Ball, within a Club’s length of the Hole. 2 Your tee must be upon the Ground. 3 You are not to change the Ball which you Strike off the tee. 4 You are not to remove, Stones, Banes or any Break Club, for the sake of playing your Ball, Except upon the fair Green and that only within a Club’s length of your Ball. 5 If your Ball comes amang Watter or any wattery filth, you are at liberty to take out your Ball and bringing it behind the hazard and teeing it, you may play it with any Club and allow your Adversary a Stroke for so getting out your Ball. 6 If your Balls be found anywhere touching one another, you are to lift the first Ball, till you play the last. 7 At Holling, you are to play your Ball honestly for the Hole, and not to play upon your Adversary a Ball, not lying in your way to the Hole. 8 If you should lose your Ball, by its being taken up, or any other way you are to go back to the Spot, where you struck last and drop another Ball, and allow your adversary a Stroke for the misfortune. 9 Na man at Holling his Ball, is to be allowed to mark his way to the Hole with his Club or anything else. 10 If a Ball be stopped by any person, Horse, Dog, or anything else, the Ball so stopped must be played where it lyes. 11 If you draw your Club, in order to Strike and proceed so far on the Stroke as to be bringing down your Club; If then, your Club shall break, in any way, it is to be Accounted a Stroke. 12 He whose Ball lies farthest from the Hole is obliged to play first. 13 Neither Trench, Ditch or Dyke, made for the preservation of the Links, nor the Scholars Hole or the Soldiers Lines, Shall be accounted a Hazard; But the Ball is to be taken out teed and played with any Iron Club. The First Golf Competition to Written Rules The first competition was played over five holes at Leith Links: The first hole was Sawmill (Braehead) 414 yards (379 m), North Mid Hole 461 yards (422 m), East Hole 426 yards (390 m), South Mid Hole 495 yards (453 m) and the last hole Thorntree Hole 435 yards (398 m) The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers On 7th March 1744 The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers (the called The Gentlemen Golfers) officially came into being here at Leith Links, when the City of Edinburgh presented the golfer with a silver club for annual competition. On the 7th March 1994, the actual 250th anniversary of the club, was celebrated by the planning of a white hawthorn tree near the finish of the 5th (Thorntree) hole, by The Lord Provost of Edinburgh, The Right Honourable Norman Irons and the Captain of The Honourable Company, Mr Douglas Foulis. On Friday, 18th March 1994, in celebration a 6-a-side two-ball foursome challenge match was played here by the High Constables of the Port of Leith versus The Honourable Company. The matches were started off by the Lord Provost, the players were dressed as i the 18th century. They played with wooden clubs of the time and with 'feathery' golf balls filled with goose feathers. Three holes were played, the 1st (sawmill), the 2nd (North Mid Hole), and the 5th (Thorntree). The Honourable Company won two matches to one. The Honourable Company moved to Musselburgh Old Course in 1836 and then to Muirfield in 1891. The game was played over a five hole course, each hole being over 400 yards long. In 1744 the first official rules were drawn up for a tournament on Leith Links and these rules, 13 in all, formed the basis for the modern game of golf. The Forgotten Great British Golfer Thomas Dickson Armour THOMAS (Tommy) ARMOUR 1896 – 1968 Scotland’s most successful golfer was born at 18 Balcarres Street in Morningside and first played golf at the Braid Hills, a member of the Edinburgh Western Golf Club and Bruntsfield Links. Emigrated to the U.S.A as a teenager and became one of the great unremembered golfers. Winner of the British Open, US Open, U.S.P.GA. Gorgie Dalry Edinburgh This is a look at the West of Edinburgh history and attractions. Gorgie Edinburgh Gorgie is a suburb of Edinburgh just 2 miles to the west of Haymarket Edinburgh. Circa 1850 Gorgie stood outside Edinburgh City limits. Saughton Hall Mansion The oldest building in the area is the old Saughton Hall Mansion (Stenhouse Mansion) Patrick Ellis merchant of Edinburgh extended the original house to the south in 1623. Sir Robert Baird purchased the lands of Saughton hall in 1650 his son James was born in Saughton hall in 1658. On lintel above door an old Edinburgh legend (gilded letters): BLISIT . B . GOD . FOR . Heart of Midlothian Football Club The Heart of Midlothian football club was founded in 1874 and played their football in the East Meadows. The East Meadows hosted the first Edinburgh Derby with Hibernian on Christmas day 1875. Tynecastle Park in the Gorgie area of Edinburgh is where the stadium has stood since the main stand opened in 1914. The Stadium has a Museum bar, café, shop and restaurant North British Distillery The North British Distillery was established in 1885 by Andrew Usher, William Sanderson and John Crabbie in competition with the Caledonian Distillery based at Haymarket Edinburgh. Whisky started to be produced in 1887 and within the first full year of production became the most popular distillery in Britain. In 1988 the North British distillery was the only grain distillery left in Edinburgh after the Caledonian Distillery closed. The original chimney of the Caledonian Brewery still stands The Magdalene Asylum Springwell House The Magdalene Asylum for fallen women was a refuge to help the women of Edinburgh, single mothers, released women prisoners and prostitutes. To educate and help them with social skills. As there were over 200 brothels in Edinburgh the problem was vast. The Asylum was first based in the Canongate in 1797 and moved by the Dr William Tait in 1842 to the edge of the City of Edinburgh near Tynecastle Toll. Masonic Lodge No 832 Lodge No 832 Heart of Midlothian was chartered in 1896 by the Grand Lodge of Scotland Lodge 832 held their meetings in 27 Murieston Crescent (see images below) from 1904 but have moved to the Caledonian Lodge at 5 Roseburn Gardens. Dalry House Dalry Manor House was home to the Chiesley family, built in 1661 by Walter Chiesley of Dalry Ayrshire, who was Lord Provost of Edinburgh on two occasions he had two sons Robert (also Lord Provost of Edinburgh twice) and John, Robert died in the Bedlam Asylum at Bristo Loosing all his money on the Darien Scheme and John was hanged for the murder of Sir George Lockhart in 1689 (John shot Lockhart when leaving St Giles Cathedral on Sunday 31st March and Hanged 3rd April at the Castlehill ). his ghost is believed to haunt the area around Dalry House. Caledonian Brewery George Lorimer Jnr & Robert Clark opened Lorimer & Clark’s Caledonian Brewery in 1869 on the site it still occupies and brews to this day. In the late 1800’s there were over 40 breweries in Edinburgh as there was an abundance of barley and good water. The Caledonian Brewery is the only survivor of all the breweries which include Scottish and Newcastle Tennent’s and Dryburgh’s. To keep ahead of the competition Caledonian Brewery, in 1990 brewed the world’s first organically brewed beer. Deuchers IPA another of the Caledonian beers was voted Scotland’s number one Beer. Ewan Williamson Fire-Fighter Edinburgh Ewan Williamson was a dedicated Fire-fighter and sadly lost his life while saving others on the 12 July 2009. A very well like gentleman and a good basketball player liked by all. There are two plaque on the building where he lost his life. The red plaque reads; Honouring the bravery and sacrifice of Ewan Williamson of Tollcross Fire station who gave his life in the line of duty on Dalry Road Edinburgh. 12 July 2009 The square plaque reads; This plaque is dedicated to the memory of Fire-fighter Ewan Williamson Who died in the line of duty Rescuing the lives of Dalry residents on 12 July 2009 Athletic Arms Bar (Diggers) One of the most well known pubs in Edinburgh is the Athletic Arm or known by everyone as Diggers. Leaderfoot Bridges Scottish Borders DRYGRANGE VIADUCT (LEADERFOOT VIADUCT) The magnificent structure that crosses the river Tweed is the Drygrange Viaduct a nineteen span, single track railway viaduct. Which was built in 1865 the 19 sandstone arches measures 40 feet (13m) span. The highest pillar is 114 feet tall above the water level. OLD DRYGRANGE BRIDGE Drygrange Bridge, at Leaderfoot was built circa 1778. A 4-span rubble bridge which was an engineering first when it was built. This was the original crossing for the main A68 road which takes you to England. This was thought to have been built where an old roman bridge stood and before that a ferry crossing. NEW DRYGRANGE BRIDGE The New Drygrange Bridge was opened in 1973 to carry the A68 highway over the River Tweed just up from the conflux with the Leader Water. River Tweed Scottish Borders The River Tweed, depicts the Border between Scotland and England. The River Tweed is 97 miles (156 km) long and flows west to east across the Scottish Borders into England. At one time there were hundreds of mills that used the rivers power to manufacture cloth. The most famous thing linked to the River Tweed is Salmon, generating vast income for the local region. It is one of the best Salmon fishing rivers in Scotland.
