John Walker founder of Johnnie Walker Whisky More on Glenkinchie and Johnnie Walker John Walker was born in 1805 on a Todrigg’s Farm in the west of Scotland. After his father’s death the farm was sold 1819, and John purchased his first shop the next year in Kilmarnock Scotland. From historic records he was selling Rum, Brandy, Gin and Islay whisky. 1837 John has a son Alexander, who was to take over the business on his father’s death in 1857. 1853 the mixing of different ages of whisky from the same distillery was allowed. This was called vatting. 1860 the spirits Act was passed allowing different whiskies to be blended together in bonded warehouses. 1865 Alexander creates a malt whisky which he registers in 1867 under copyright as Old Highland Whisky, later to become Johnnie Walker Black Label. The John Walker brand whisky was popular and in 1870 to save shipping costs they changed the shape of the bottle to a square, which allowed bottles to be packed more efficiently. The quicker they could make the whisky the more they could sell, until 1915 when a law was passed that whisky must spend two years in an oak barrel. He then has the traditional label of the Johnnie Walker Whisky designed, which he registers under trademark in 1877. A label at an angle of 24 degrees which is in use today. 1906 the Walker Whisky Company had three main products, Old Highland White Label 5 year old, Special Old Highland Red Label 9 year old and Extra Special Old Highland Black Label 12 year old. The company Logo ‘The Striding Man’ was first drawn by Tom Brown in 1908 and their famous one liner ‘Born 1820 -Still going strong’ was introduced. In 1909 rebranding to Johnnie Walker took place, which introduced the famous 10 year old Red and 12 year old Black Label whisky brand. On to 1970 after many awards and warrants from royalty, the first Johnnie Walker shop was opened where it first began in Kilmarnock. Edinburgh New Town Attractions The New Town in Edinburgh was the idea of King George III and the design he decided on was originally 3 main streets with 2 Squares one in the East and one in the west at each end of George Street. Edinburgh New Town Attractions The naming of “The New Town” In 1759 King George III had a new town built as an extension of Edinburgh City, as the over population of the old town streets had become unliveable. A bridge was built as an access to where the new town would be built (North Bridge). Where the area of the Nor Loch once covered, Waverley Rail Station and Princes Street Gardens are now. When the plans for the new town were agreed the King named the streets with the main street after himself (George Street). The other streets of the new town were named after as follows: Queen Street, after his wife the Queen: St. Giles Street after the city’s patron saint, St. Giles St. Andrews Square after the patron saint of Scotland and George Square after the patron saint of England. The smaller street between George Street and Queen Street is named Thistle Street after (Scotland’s national emblem) Street Between George Street and St. Giles Street is named Rose Street after (England’s national emblem). King George, after consideration, rejected the name St. Giles Street as St Giles being the patron saint of lepers and also the name of a slum area on the edge of the City of London. It was renamed Princes Street after his sons, the three Princes. The name of St. George Square was also changed to Charlotte Square after his wife Charlotte the Queen as there was already a George Square just outside the old town. Thistle Street was split into three separate street names, from the west end. It became Young Street then Hill Street after the architects who built the new town with the final part remaining Thistle Street now half the length of Rose Street. The three streets running across the main street completing the new town area, Castle Street named for the view of the castle, Frederick Street after the king’s father Frederick and Hanover Street was after the Royal house of Hanover. The main access to the new town was by the North Bridge. The Nor Loch was drained and the debris from the excavations of the new town were piled up in the middle of the now dry bed of the loch and formed the mound the only other access from the old town to the new town. The gardens were then formed on both sides of the mound in the dry bed where the loch had been at the foot of Edinburgh Castle, running the length of Princes Street. The first buildings in the New Town to be built were in Rose Court, at the east end of Thistle Street in 1767, now called Thistle Court, this building can still be seen today. Grassmarket attractions Guide has all the history and attractions in the Gassmarket. Murders, Hangings, Riots, famous people, pubs, restaurants, shops, hotels apartments and cafes. Also included is the West Port, West Bow and King's Stable Road. Grassmarket Attractions Edinburgh The Grassmarket Area was where people from all over brought their livestock to sell at market. Cattle, horses, sheep and goats. There were many market stalls which would sell homemade and Homegrown goods. The Grassmarket is the oldest market area recorded in British history and has been written about since circa 1370. It was James the 3rd who first gave charter to a weekly market in 1477. This Grassmarket area was first paved in 1543 from the West Port to the Upper Bow. Today there is a weekly Saturday Market with all kinds of goods. From early morning to late afternoon there is a hive of activity. The Grassmarket has one road that runs through for traffic and the rest of the area is pedestrianised with outside drinking and eating areas for all the family. The Grassmarket was built on what was part of the south loch which was drained in the early 14th century. It became a cattle market shortly after and was officially one on Edinburgh's main markets under the ordinance of James III in 1477. There were many taverns and Inns to satisfy the thirst of the cattle traders and farm hands who brought their animals to market. In 1560 the Corn Market was moved from the corner of Marlin’s Wynd to the east end of the Grassmarket. The Gallows stood at the foot of the West Bow from 1660, near to where the Corn Market was situated. This became the main gallows for executions in Edinburgh until the last hanging on the 4th February 1874. when the gallows moved back to the High Street. The animal market took place here up to 1911. Two of the taverns still remain The Last Drop where it was said the person to be hanged would get his last drink. The other is Maggie Dickson’s a famous story of how the law was changed from the sentence being ‘to be hanged’ to ‘to be hanged till dead’ As Maggie was hung and didn’t die. North Side of the Grassmarket 1830 -2019 Grassmarket 500th Anniversary Plaque This plaque was unveiled |on the 3rd of October 1977 by the | Rt. Hon. Kenneth Borthwick. | Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh | To commemorate the 500th anniversary | of a reorganisation of Edinburgh markets. | Authorised by King James III. | on the 3rd of October 1477. | The Cattle Market was situated at | the western end of the Grassmarket | and in King’s Stables Road | this are was then just outside the Burgh. The White Hart Inn Grassmarket Edinburgh The White Hart Inn Edinburgh was established in 1516, The White Hart Inn is one of the oldest and most historic pubs in Edinburgh. Past visitors have included the poets Robert Burns and William Wordsworth. The murderers Burke and Hare also were regulars in the pub in the late 1820s, as this is where they were to lure their victims back to their nearby lodgings, where they were murdered and their bodies sold to Dr Knox for medical research and study by students of the University medical school. During the First World War, on 2 April 1916, a German Zeppelin bombing raid was mounted over Edinburgh. During the bombing, a bomb exploded on the pavement outside a Public House, injuring four, one of whom died of shrapnel injuries. Zeppelin Airship Paving Slab Grassmarket Edinburgh This Stone marks the site of a bomb dropped from Zeppelin Airship L14 on the night of 2nd April 1916 on that night 2 Zeppelin Airships dropped bomb on Leith and Edinburgh. Some of the places they were dropped in Edinburgh were; 39 Lauriston Place, 183 Causewayside, Marchmont Crescent, Belford Place, Lothian Road, the Castle Rock near the king’s Bridge, 16 Marshall Street, Nicolson Street, 69 St Leonards Hill, Royal Infirmary at Lauriston and Coltbridge Gardens. There were a number of deaths and injured plus substantial damage to property. Grassmarket Mission Grassmarket Edinburgh The Grassmarket Mission was founded by James Fairbairn in 1886. In 1930, the Mission purchased the building next door (at 96 Grassmarket) and constructed a new Mission Hall Alexander Barrie, was appointed Superintendent in 1916, Mission became known colloquially as “The Barries”. The Mission was there to help the poor and needy of the Grassmarket in 1989 the decision was made to sell the Mission Halls. The Grassmarket Community Project was incorporated and funded by The Grassmarket Mission in 2010 and is still going strong. The Plaque reads; Grassmarket Mission | Undenominational | Erected in Memory of | James Fairbairn | Founder and First Superintendent | Of This Mission | Died 3rd ay 1894 | “His works Do Follow Him “. The Grassmarket Gallows Grassmarket Edinburgh The Grassmarket Edinburgh 1477 to 1911 was one of Edinburgh’s main markets for horse and cattle. The Grassmarket was also a setting for public executions. under Scots Law at that time, as she had served her punishment, she was free to go. Only later the words “until dead” were added to the sentence of hanging. You can find the pub named after her just a few yards from where she was hanged. The shadow of a gibbet is marked on the paving stones where the former gallows were. The inscription around the stone reads; On this Spot many Martyrs and Covenanters died for the Protestant Faith Margaret Dickson ‘Half hang it Maggie Dickson’ One famous execution in 1724 was of a Margaret Dickson of Inveresk a young women separated from her husband. (She was to be known as ‘Half hang it Maggie Dickson’). Her crime was concealment of pregnancy in the case of a dead child. (Not to be her husbands). She was said to have killed and disposed of the child’s body. Her execution was carried out by the hangman, after hanging for the prescribed time she was put into a coffin which the lid was nailed firmly closed. A fight broke out between the friends of Maggie and ae surgeon’s apprentices who wanted the body for investigation a regular thing in these times. Her friends were successful and took the coffin on a wheelbarrow but the uneven roads caused shaking and banging of the coffin and at Peffermill her friends herd banging on the coffin and found Maggie to be alive. By the time they arrived in Musselburgh she walked the final distance to her home at Inveresk. Maggie had served her sentence of hanging and lived a long life and had several children. When Maggie went out people would look at her and shout out to her “half hang it Maggie” when she walked past them in the street. Last Man Executed in Grassmarket Inscription on the pavement reads; The last person to be hanged from the Grassmarket gallows was James Andrews on the 4th February 1784. the names and dates of others hanged are on the steel boards. The Grassmarket Cross THIS CROSS (ORIGINALLY A CRUCIFIX) WAS AT ONE TIME IMPOSED UPON THE WALL OF THE HOUSE WHICH STOOD IMMEDIATELY OPPOSITE THE SITE OF THE GALLOWS IN THE GRASSMARKET USED FOR PUBLIC EXECUTIONS. IT WAS THE LAST OBJECT TO BE SEEN BY THE SUFFERERS BEFORE DEATH. AMONG OTHERS WHO WERE EXECUTED AT THE SPOT WERE MANY WHO SUFFERED FOR CONSCIENCE SAKE. NOT IMPROBABLY SOME MEMBERS OF THIS CONGREGATION. IT IS NOT UNTRUE THEREFORE TO DESCRIBE IT AS A MARTYR’S CROSS AND NOT UNFITTING THAT IT SHOULD FIND PLACE HERE. WHEN THE HOUSE WAS DEMOLISHED THE CROSS WAS GIVEN TO ROBERT FARQUHAR SHAW STEWART WHOSE FAMILY PRESENTED IT TO OLD SAINT PAUL’S. Grassmarket Cross Captain John Porteous Lynching Grassmarket Edinburgh Captain John Porteous Lynching in 1736 after 10 years being Captain of the City Guard John Porteous was lynched on 7 September 1736. Three smugglers/robbers were caught and imprisoned for carrying out a robbery. William Hall, George Robertson and Andrew Wilson. At their trial William Hall was sentenced to transportation to the colonies for life, but Andrew Wilson and George Robertson were sentenced to hang and were imprisoned in the Tolbooth in Edinburgh’s High Street awaiting execution. George Robertson escaped and made his way out of Britain. However, Andrew Wilson was publicly hanged in the Grassmarket in April of 1736. As events unfolded a riot started and the City guard was called out, led by Captain John Porteous. Due to the rioting Captain John Porteous instructed his men to fire above the heads of the crowd this made the riot even more heated, the shots had killed onlookers who were at their windows of their houses. With the crowd getting even more violent, Captain Porteous gave the order to shoot into the crowd and more were killed. Later that day Captain John Porteous was arrested and charged with murder. At his trial on 5 July 1736, he was convicted by a unanimous decision and found guilty of murder and sentenced to death. The execution took place in the Grassmarket on 8 Sept. 1736. Door Lintel Grassmarket Edinburgh 71 Grassmarket The Lintel above the door Inscription: 1889 VITAM (LIFE) DIRIGAT (DIRECT) Prior to this building there were housing for the Knights Templar. Old Grassmarket Dwelling This is one of the oldest inscriptions in the Grassmarket dated 1634. The tenement originally owned in 1634 and inscribed 'Blessed be God for all his Giftis' between initials IL and GK, standing for James Lightbodie and his wife Geillis Kniblo. A Scottish custom for the newlyweds to inscribe their initials above the door of their house and the date they married or moved in. The Beehive Inn Grassmarket Edinburgh Death Cell Door Calton Jail Edinburgh The actual door of the death cell that was in the Calton Jail in Regent Road can be found on the first floor of the Beehive Inn. The Flodden Wall Grassmarket Edinburgh From Granny Green Steps across to The Vennel in the west end of the Grassmarket is where the Flodden Wall stood as a protection against invading armies. The Flodden Wall is the name given to the defensive wall which was built to surround the City of Edinburgh in 1513. The pictures below show the Flodden Wall as it is today. The first part of the wall visible is in The Vennel and the final part still standing is in The Pleasance. It was in 1513 that the Scots waged a disastrous attack on the English at Flodden Field. James IV was killed in the action, along with 10,000 other Scots. The Flodden Wall was built to defend Edinburgh from English attacks. Many parts of the wall survive to this day. The wall starts at the Castle goes down Granny Green Steps to the Grassmarket across the Grassmarket to the Vennel Steps where you can find the ‘Flodden Tower’ where the Flodden wall joins the Telfer Wall. This extension was to protect the Heriot Hospital, now Heriot’s School. John Taillefer was the master mason who built and named the Telfer Wall (1628 – 1636). At the corner of Lauriston Place and Heriot Place turn left and follow Heriot’s School wall until you reach a further part of the Telfer Wall. Continue round into Forrest Road where there is a plaque on the wall. This is where the wall would have crossed to the Bristo Gate on your right. Continue on and you will come to Greyfriar’s Kirkyard where there are many interesting things to see including parts of the Telfer Wall and where it joins with The Flodden Wall. Click on title in blue to get the Flodden Wall Old Edinburgh Flodden Wall New Greyfriars Mission Buildings Grassmarket Edinburgh The Greyfriars Mission building was built in 1884 as a part of the Robertson Memorial Mission Buildings. The three buildings were a church a shop and housing. The wall tablet Inscription reads New Greyfriars Mission Buildings to the glory of God and in loving memory of the Rev. William Robertson DD, for nearly 40 years minister of this Parish. AD 1884. The Church building is now a bar restaurant and brewery. Castle Wynd South Castle Wynd South is a path and steps that gives access to Johnston Terrace from the Grassmarket. The Steps are named after Patrick Geddes (biologist, sociologist, geographer, and philanthropist) Best known as a town planner. A further set of steps Castle Wynd North gives access to Castlehill and the entrance to Edinburgh Castle. Heriot Bridge Grassmarket Edinburgh Heriot Bridge in the Grassmarket was an access road to Heriot Hospital (school) when it opened in 1628. The Heriot Bridge has long since been block by other school buildings. Heriot’s when built had its main entrance facing the Castle and then the Old Town of Edinburgh as Heriots School stood outside the city walls. Kelso Attractions Scottish Border Town Kelso Abbey In the early times, about AD 1100, the main settlement in the area was in what was then known as Marchmount. The site of a castle which stood on the mound between the Teviot and Tweed. In 1124 David I, renamed the Town and Castle as Roxburgh (Rokesburgh). Today Roxburgh Castle is a ruin. David I founded Kelso Abbey, in 1128, in Easter Kelso which expanded around the abbey. Kelso Abbey was inhabited by monks from Normandy (Tiron) in France which Alexander I brother to David I had first brought to Selkirk. In 1143 the Abbey was dedicated to The Blessed Virgin and Saint John. After the final destruction of the Abbey buildings in circa 1587. Most of the Abbey ruins were cleared in 1805 leaving what you can be seen today. Kelso War Memorial The War Memorial can be seen in gardens next to Kelso Abbey ruins. The garden was gifted by the Duke of Roxburghe in 1921. Kelso War Memorial commemorates the people of Kelso who were lost in World War I (92 names) and World War II (42 names). The memorial resembles a medieval Scottish Mercat Cross, with a sculpture of St George slaying the dragon, a symbol for the triumph of good over evil. There are bronze plaques with the names of the fallen. Waverley Lodge Kelso Sir Walter Scott Walter Scott lived with his aunt Janet in 1783 for 6 months and attended Kelso Grammar School. While at Kelso Grammar school he met James Ballantyne, who was later to become Walter's publisher and business partner. He live in Waverley Cottage which has a bust of Scott and a dog statue. Kelso Grammar School Bridge and River Tweed Floors Castle Gates Floors Castle is one of the most historic residences in Scotland with centuries of family history. The Castle has been home to the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe since 1730. Floors Castle was first constructed between 1721 and 1726 for the 5th Earl of Roxburgh, who became the 1st Duke of Roxburghe in 1707, moving from their main residence in Dunbar (Broxmouth Park) to their new residence at Floors C astle in 1730. Floors Castle stands in a 52000 acre estate which includes the Cheviot Hills, Tweed Valley and Lammermuir Hills. It Overlooks the River Tweed and the ruins of Roxburgh Castle. Melrose and Dryburgh Scottish Borders Attractions The town of Melrose is in the heart of the Scottish Borders. Melrose is where the Abbey where the Heart of Robert the Bruce is buried. It is also where at Newstead the Romans built first and main camp in the north. Trimontium was the Roman Camp built in 79 A.D. (the size of a town). This is as most Sottish Borders towns is a rugby town with the main exception that it is where the game of 7's rugby began. Melrose Rugby Club Melrose Rugby Football Club was founded in 1877 and is one of the world’s oldest Rugby Football Clubs. Melrose Rugby Club is where 7 a side rugby was thought up by Ned Haig and first played in 1883. The world comes to Melrose in April for the 7s Rugby Tournament. Melrose Abbey Melrose Abbey founded in 1136 by King David I. This was the first Cistercian monastery in Scotland. The stone plaque shows where Robert the Bruce’s Heart Grave Marker Look up to the top of the walls of Melrose Abbey to see a Pig playing Bagpipes Melrose Abbey Museum Thomas The Rhymer Thomas the Rhymer Thomas was a poet and someone that could predict the future. His home was in Earlston in the Scottish Borders. The legend tells that Thomas fell asleep beneath a tree at the foot of the Eildon Hills. When he woke he saw the vision of a shining Lady on a Grey horse, this was the Queen of the Fairies and she entranced him and took him away to Fairyland. He remained there for what he thought had been three days, but was actually 7 years. When he left, the Queen gave him the gift of speaking the truth and told him many prophecies of great events in Scottish history. Thomas the Rhymer Stone Thomas the Rhymer Stone Eildon Hills Bridge Over the Tweed One of the events he prophesied that there would be a bridge over the River Tweed which would be visible from the Eildon Tree. The Fairy Queen also told Thomas that she would return one day, so if you feel weary rest under the tree and you never can tell what will happen next. Thomas was a real person and lived in the 1200s and his rhymes have been popular for hundreds of years. His rhymers are the earliest examples of Scottish Poetry. Look in the Poetry Library of the Royal Mile for some examples. Stand by the stone and look for the Bridge or take a nap and see what happens. Dryburgh Attractions Scottish Borders Dryburgh Abbey In 1150 Hugo de Morville, owner of large area of southern Scotland granted by King David I, established the first community of White Canons of the Premonstratensian Order at Dryburgh. Edward II of England in 1322 and burnt the Abbey and Robert the Bruce had it rebuilt, it was again attacked in 1385 and has been attacked on other occasions, but parts still stand after 850 years. Dryburgh is a small hamlet with an Abbey of great significance. There are many things to see in and around the Abbey with Walter Scott's famous view of the Eildon Hills, and his family grave in the graveyard of the Abbey. A 30 foot statue of William (Braveheart) Wallace and the Temple of the Muse close to the River Tweed. Dryburgh Abbey has many attractions that include the grave of Earl Haig and an obelisk in memorial to King James I, king James II and Hugh de Moreville. Sir Walter Scott's Grave Sir Walter Scott died in 1832 and is buried in Dryburgh Abbey burial grounds. Also in the tomb are some of his family. His wife who died in 1816. His son also Walter, died 1847 and his wife. John Gibson Lockhart's Grave Walter Scott's son-in-law, who wrote Walter Scott’s biography died 1854. Interned next to Sir Walter Scott. Earl Douglas Haig of Bemersyde's Grave Field Marshal Douglas Haig was Commander in Chief of the British forces in the First World War. The Haig family have been part of the area since the building of the Abbey circa 1100. Memorial Obelisk Dryburgh Abbey The Obelisk at Dryburgh Abbey is engraved with figures of three great men. King James I, king James II and Hugh de Moreville who was born in Cumbria circa 1100 was Lord High Constable of Scotland and owned a large part of Scotland. Founder of Dryburgh Abbey circa 1150 and died circa 1160 in Dryburgh in the Scottish Borders. Cockenzie - Port Seton East Lothian Coast Cockenzie & Port Seton East Lothian Coast Cockenzie East Lothian has a long history with the burgh status created in 1591 by James VI of Scotland. There is a harbour and large mansion house that have been part of Cockenzie East Lothian for over 300 years. Cockenzie East Lothian is a small town on the east coast of Scotland just outside of Musselburgh close to the site of the historic Battle of Prestonpans where the Jacobite army led by Bonnie Prince Charlie defeated the English army led by Sir John Cope. Cockenzie and Port Seton have merged into one town. The memorial garden and war memorial are at the centre of the village of Cockenzie and down the coast is Port Seton Harbour, Seton Castle and Collegiate Church . Cockenzie House Cockenzie East Lothian Cockenzie House was originally built for David Seton by Robert Seton, 8th Lord Seton and 1st Earl of Winton, circa 1600, as an estate-residence from which to oversee the affairs of the harbour and of the local Seton estate. It then passed to the family Caddell (Cadell) of Cockenzie. The Cadell family were land owners of Cockenzie for over 200 years purchasing the land in 1779. The original lands of Cockenzie being owned by George Seton, 5th Earl of Winton who had the lands taken from him by the crown as he had been a supporter of the Jacobite army and the old pretender ( James Francis Edward Stuart). Cockenzie House Gardens Salt Pan, Shell Grotto and Statue The lands were then purchased by the York Buildings Company in 1719. The York buildings company interests were in the production and distribution of coal and salt and became the largest company in Scotland. Cockenzie House has many interesting objects in the gardens of which one is a Salt Pan which is how salt was originally made from the sea. Cockenzie Power Station The Power Station at Cockenzie East Lothian, opened in 1967 and used over 500.000 tons of coal which was crushed by the grinding ring and steel balls to generate electricity to power all the houses in Edinburgh for over 10 years. A further harbour at Port Seton was built around the same time and later rebuilt by the Stevenson brothers (father and uncle of Robert Louis Stevenson) in 1835 for the Cadell (Caddell) family who acquired the area in 1774. Cockenzie Port Seton in Bloom This is one of the areas the local people maintain around Cockenzie and Port Seton. Volunteers have regenerated disused and derelict areas into beautiful flower beds and shrub areas with centre piece as below. The group started in 1998 Creating, the Millenium Garden, the Memorial Garden and the Secret Garden at Cockenzie House. John Muir Way East Lothian The John Muir Way coastal route passes through many small villages and towns of East Lothian. This section of the John Muir Way is great for walking and cycling, Prestonpans, Cockenzie, Port Seton, Longniddry and Aberlady. Coast of East Lothian Port Seton Harbour (The Seton Family Port) Port Seton East Lothian The harbour port of Seton was built in 1635 and closed circa 1810. The estate was neglected for over 100 years from 1715 till 1789. The new estate owner the Earl of Wemyss contracted David and Thomas Stevenson to design and build the new harbour. The harbour was complete in 1880 and is still in use. The original harbour was used to ship coal and other goods all over Europe. The Stevenson brother s were famous engineers from Edinburgh part of the Stevenson family who built lighthouses around Britain and Thomas’s son was Robert Louis Stevenson (writer). Seton Collegiate Church Port Seton East Lothian Seton Collegiate Church Port Seton is the best example of a medieval collegiate churches in Scotland. Seton Collegiate Church built circa 1240. Dedicated to St Mary & Holy Cross and was consecrated by the Bishop of St Andrews in 1242. Lady St Clair on the death of her husband had chapel built to hold a private alter and the tomb of her husband Sir John Seton. George Seton, 1st Lord Seton, in 1470 started to the process of changing the church to serve as a Collegiate Church which was completed in 1492. The 2nd Lord Seton became the first Seton to be buried in the new choir in 1508. The Church has been damaged on several occasion circa 1540, 1650, and 1688 then finally in 1715 when the Lothian Militia defaced the interior, demolished tombs, the entrance, and original nave. Seton Castle | Palace Port Seton East Lothian Port Seton home to the Seton family, owners of Seton Palace for circa 500 years. (Circa 1120 – 1715) The house was damaged and burned out during the 1715 Jacobite Rising for the next 75 years it was left as a ruin and finally demolished by the owner Mr McKenzie after he purchased the lands in 1789 he demolished the remains of Seton Palace in 1790. In 1798 the lands were purchased by the Earl of Wemyss who built a Castle on the previous site of Seton Palace. Mary McMillan purchased the Castle which had fallen into a poor state in 2002. After renovation finally sold to a private owner Stephen Leach in 2007. The previous Seton Palace was a favourite of both Kings and Queens. With guest James IV visited in 1498, as well as Mary Queen of Scots in 1567 James V and his wife Mary of Guise, James VI in 1603 Charles I 1633 and Charles II in 1649. Cockenzie Waggonway Waggonway Museum Cockenzie East Lothian The Waggonway was probably the first rail line in Scotland, with carriages pulled along wooden tracks by horses from the coal pits in Tranent to the salt pans and Cockenzie Harbour. Where the salt and Coal were loaded onto ships to be transported to Europe. Cockenzie Waggonway was built by the York Buildings Company in 1722. The line was upgraded to iron rails in 1815 and connected to the new main rail line which went from Edinburgh to North Berwick in 1846. There is still traces of the waggonway which can be walked.
